In a whitewashed room, folding beds were neatly lined up. In the corner, there were boxes of medical equipment and oxygen cylinders. People sat outside in an orderly fashion, holding slips of paper. They waited for the officer's signal to enter the room and finish their work for the day. The Harita Nickel blood donation event in honor of National K3 Month was set on Tuesday (8/2).
The donors entered the room one by one. The names that are called are immediately directed to the examination table, where the screening process takes place to select participants who are truly deserving of donors. If certain conditions, such as blood pressure and hemoglobin levels, are not met, the donor process will be postponed. This is critical for the safety of future donors and potential donors.
Participants who have passed the screening can immediately lie down on the provided bed. Medics began to play a role. They treat donors like volunteers fighting for humanity, with courtesy and respect. The blood bag gradually began to fill. The 350 cc blood bag took about 30 minutes to fill.
Even though they had to wait in line, HARITA residents continued to attend the blood donation event held at the Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) Main Office. Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP), Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS), Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), Halmahera Jaya Ferronickel (HJF), and contractor partners from Harita arrived one after the other, according to the time set by the committee. In the spirit of humanitarian action, the participants in different colored uniforms became one.
The blood donation activity under the slogan "Share 2care" was made possible with the support of HARITA Nickel management and the Blood Transfusion Unit (UTD) of Labuha Hospital, South Halmahera. Younsel Evand Roos, Site Manager, hopes that this activity will be repeated every year during National K3 Month. "In the future, it may be called not only Occupational Safety and Health Month (K3), but also K3B Month." On the first day of the activity, Younsel stated, "The letter B stands for Sharing."
He added that if this activity is repeated regularly, Harita Nickel could become a donor bank. "Our workforce is currently quite large and will continue to grow." "If this blood donation is done regularly, more people will benefit," Younsel said. He also stated that through blood donation, all employees could participate in sharing activities, not just Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) colleagues in the field.
Rico W. Albert, HPL's Person in Charge of Engineering and the Environment (PTL), praised this activity involving all HARITA Nickel business units. He determined that this activity was carried out successfully while adhering to strict health protocols to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus at the Obi Site. "We would like to thank the members of the committee as well as the UTD RSUD Labuha for their willingness to come and assist. This activity should be beneficial to both donors and recipients "He stated.
Begin with Empathy
HARITA Nickel has previously held a blood donation event in February 2020. At the time, more than 100 people attended the event. However, since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the company has not held blood donations because of the risks that may arise. The same thing happened in several locations. Because of this condition, many hospitals' blood supplies are depleted.
Not long ago, a Harita Nickel employee's family was involved in an accident. Transfusions should be performed as soon as possible. However, some hospitals' blood banks are depleted. The employee continued to search various locations, ask everyone questions, and post announcements on his social media status. Even though the victim was ultimately saved, efforts to find a blood supply had to be made even harder than they should have been. That is why HARITA Nickel is re-organizing blood donation activities during National K3 Month.
The incline of the Covid-19 case, as well as the high rate of employee vaccinations at the Obi Site, gave the organizing committee confidence in holding donor activities. The committee is also dominated by the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team, which knows how to create a safe event. Dr. Arum Citra Pitaloka, Chairman of the Committee, expressed gratitude that this event could take place with the help of various parties. "Hopefully, the outcomes of this event will be beneficial to our brothers and sisters in need," the MSP clinic doctor said.
172 bags of blood were collected throughout the two-day activity. Although more participants registered, not all of them passed the screening to donate blood. According to Nita Rachmawati, Head of the UTD Room at Labuha Hospital, the number of bags of blood collected can keep the Labuha Hospital's stock of needs for the next month.
Nita also stated that ideally, bloodstock should be available in an area at 2% of the total population. This is done to prepare for a shortage of bloodstock when it is most needed by the patient. "I checked, and the blood stocks for groups A and B were both empty. However, this event provides us with new inventory. We greatly appreciate HARITA Nickel's commitment to humanitarian action, one of which is this blood donation activity "Nita, representing the UTD team at Labuha Hospital, stated.
Many benefits can be obtained by donor recipients and donors themselves through blood donation, according to Nita. The blood will relieve the donor recipient's pain and extend his or her life expectancy. Meanwhile, donors will benefit from a variety of advantages, including improved heart health, reduced cancer risk, stroke prevention, and increased blood cell production. "By donating blood, we help others while also helping ourselves," he explained.
