TBP’s main products are laterite nickel ore, which consists of limonite and saprolite ore. Limonite ore typically contains 1% - 2% nickel, and is deposited closer to the earth's surface. TBP through its subsidiary, PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, operates the first high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) facility in Indonesia that processes limonite ore into mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), and further refine it into nickel sulphate and cobalt sulphate. These are the cathode materials for nickel-based lithium-ion batteries.
Saprolite ore is deposited beneath the limonite zone. Compared to limonite ore, saprolite ore typically has higher nickel content. PT Megah Surya Pertiwi and PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel, both subsidiaries of TBP, operate nickel smelters in Obi Island that process saprolite ore to produce ferronickel, which can be further processed into stainless steel.
