Harita Nickel Explores Nickel Sulfate Export Options to Korea and Japan

29 June 2023

TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA - PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (stock code: NCKL) is considering the possibility of exporting nickel sulfate to Korea and Japan. The company, also known as Harita Nickel, has already exported this commodity to China.

The President Director of Trimegah Bangun Persada, Roy A Arfandy, stated that the world's largest electric vehicle battery manufacturers are located in China. Therefore, the majority of Harita Nickel's products are exported to China.

"But we are open up the possibility of exporting to other countries, such as electric vehicle battery manufacturers in Korea or Japan. We will certainly seize the opportunity to sell or export to those markets," said Roy during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

The company has not yet considered the domestic market for nickel sulfate. This is because there are no cathode and precursor plant in Indonesia.

"Unfortunately our nickel sulfate, since there are no domestic buyers, we have to export it," he explained.

Previously, Harita Nickel, through its affiliated entity, PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), officially conducted its inaugural export of 5,584 tons of nickel sulfate to China on Friday, June 18, 2023.

The nickel sulfate was packaged in 290 containers and shipped to China via a vessel. Roy targets a total shipment of 240,000 tons of nickel sulfate per year, in line with the factory's production capacity.

"In the future, the company will strive to send approximately four vessels to meet the demand for nickel sulfate production," said Roy, as quoted by Antara, on Saturday, June 18, 2023.

He explained that the export marked a new milestone for Harita Nickel in the nickel downstream business.

The nickel sulfate is a result of refining in Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku Province, and will be used in the production of lithium batteries with high nickel content.

In the future, the use of lithium batteries is predicted to continue increasing, particularly in the electric vehicle industry.
