JAKARTA (ANTARA) — PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk or Harita Nickel consistently implements Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles through a mangrove rehabilitation program in South Halmahera, North Maluku.
Environmental Marine Compliance Manager of Harita Nickel Windy Prayogo said that the mangrove rehabilitation program is part of corporate social and environmental responsibility that has been consistently carried out by the company to date.
"The total land that has been planted with mangroves as of early 2023 is 23.73 hectares, with a total of 40 thousand mangrove seedlings that have been planted. This mangrove rehabilitation program is spread across four locations in South Halmahera Regency, including Soligi Village in Obi Subdistrict, Awango and Belang-Belang Villages in Bacan Subdistrict, and Guruapin Village in Kayoa Subdistrict," Windy said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The mangrove rehabilitation is carried out to preserve coastal ecosystems, so that it can provide benefits to both environment and surrounding communities.
For this program, Harita Nickel received appreciation from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs (Kemenko Marves), Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), and Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).
Coordinator of Forest Utilization and Preservation Control of Kemenko Marves Fatma Puspitasari said, these three ministries appreciate Harita Nickel as the mandate holder of the National Strategic Project (PSN) Obi Industrial Estate, for implementing a government partnership program to support compliance with the national target of 600,000 hectares of mangrove land by 2024.
In fact, similar activities have been carried out by Harita Nickel even before they signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Cooperation Agreement (PKS) for mangrove rehabilitation with the Coordinating Ministry of Marves on November 17, 2022.
Since 2021, this company has partnered with Khairun University of Ternate in conducting a series of mangrove planting and rehabilitation activities by empowering local communities.
According to her, mangrove rehabilitation and various environmental conservation programs that have been implemented are proof of Harita Nickel's commitment to sustainable business governance in accordance with ESG principles.
"Of course this is also an added value for PT Trimegah Bangun Persada as a public company," said Fatma.
Appreciation was also extended to all companies under Harita Nickel business unit that have implemented Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program to encourage economic self-sufficiency of the surrounding community.
As for evaluation, the team recommends that the company conduct further studies related to mangrove planting locations as outlined in their technical plan. This is important to optimize mangrove seedling growth, especially in coastal areas directly facing the sea.
Restoration Coordinator of the Directorate of Coastal and Small Island Utilization (P4K) at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Hery Gunawan Daulay explained that mangroves function as a buffer zone to protect coastal areas from damage. Therefore, planting these plants is considered important to protect coastal ecosystems.
"If we want to see fish and marine biota grow well, of course we need to maintain marine ecology by maintaining coastal ecosystems. The abundance of fish and marine life can be utilized economically by local communities, of course, without overdoing it," said Hery.
Furthermore, he encouraged Harita Nickel's mangrove rehabilitation program to continue, so that mangrove land area can continue to expand from year to year.
