In commemoration of the 2025 National Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Month, Harita Nickel conducted a community service initiative in Soligi Village, one of the surrounding villages of the company’s operations on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. This initiative underscores the company’s commitment to fostering a strong safety culture and enhancing the overall health and well-being of the local community.
Haryadi Ilyas, Chairman of the 2025 National OHS Month Committee Harita Nickel and Lygend Resources emphasized that this year’s OHS Month activities extend beyond the company’s internal operations to actively engage with the surrounding community.
“Last year, a similar initiative was conducted in Kawasi Village. This year, we are reaching out to Soligi Village to further promote awareness of the critical role that health and safety play in everyday life,” he stated.
As part of this program, Harita Nickel facilitated free health screenings for the community, with a particular focus on elderly residents. The screenings covered blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol checks, along with medical consultations aimed at early detection and prevention of potential health conditions.
Rizky Albizar, Harita Nickel’s Site Doctor, stated that the health screenings revealed a high prevalence of degenerative diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. “Many residents have yet to properly manage their blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Therefore, in addition to the screenings, we also provided education on the importance of a healthy diet and adequate rest as preventive measures,” he explained.
He further emphasized that education serves as a fundamental step in raising community awareness about health. “We must start with the basics—health promotion and disease prevention. Looking ahead, we hope to establish platforms or resources that enable the community to exchange insights on common health concerns in their environment,” he added.
Other activities included vision screenings for high school students, a fire extinguisher (APAR) usage workshop to enhance community preparedness, the Gemilang Nutrisi Program on healthy eating habits, and dental and oral health education for elementary school students.
The initiative received a positive response from the local community. Rukaya Hadiliah, a resident of Soligi Village, expressed her appreciation for Harita Nickel’s efforts. “This program has been extremely beneficial for us. Previously, we often relied on traditional remedies, but now we are more aware of the importance of seeking medical treatment at healthcare facilities,” she shared. She also expressed hope that similar initiatives would continue in the future.
Through this series of activities, Harita Nickel reaffirms its role as a strategic partner to the community in fostering a healthier and safer environment. The company remains committed to implementing programs aligned with the principles of sustainable mining, aimed at enhancing the well-being of communities within its operational areas.
