Reinforcing Commitment to Responsible Mining Practices, Harita Nickel Undergoes IRMA Audit

08 April 2025

Demonstrating its commitment to responsible mining practices, Harita Nickel is undergoing its first audit under the globally recognized standard from the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA).

IRMA is a voluntary mining standard describing best practices to protect people and the environment; an assurance process to independently measure mines against that standard; and an organization equally governed by representatives from six affected stakeholder sectors—local communities, organized labor, NGOs, finance institutions, purchasers, and mining companies—overseeing the standard and assurance process. IRMA is globally unique in that its governance structure provides communities equal power to mining companies, and non-commercial interests the same power as commercial interests.

Conducted by SCS Global Services, the comprehensive IRMA audit evaluates over 400 rigorous indicators. After an extensive document review that began in November 2024, the on-site verification is scheduled from April 15–23, 2025.

According to IRMA’s official website, Harita Nickel is the first company in Indonesia to officially commit to undergoing this audit. Roy Arman Arfandy, President Director of Harita Nickel, emphasized that the IRMA audit is crucial for reinforcing the company’s commitment to responsible mining. Additionally, the audit seeks to assure global consumers that Harita Nickel products meet internationally recognized sustainability standards.

President Director of Harita Nickel, Roy Arman Arfandy, said that the audit against IRMA standards is important to emphasize the company's commitment to responsible mining practices, which covers environmental, social, and occupational health and safety aspects. No less important, this audit is to assure consumers that Harita Nickel products have met internationally recognized sustainability standards.

“Through this IRMA audit, we aim to address and change the ‘Dirty Nickel’ stigma frequently associated with Indonesian nickel. Harita Nickel is fully committed to aligning our operations with global best practices, continually identifying areas for improvement, and actively engaging all stakeholders,” Roy asserted.

Even before the IRMA audit, Harita Nickel had already achieved significant sustainability milestones. By 2024, the company reclaimed over 231 hectares of former mining land, successfully restoring local ecosystems, and secured a Blue rating in the Ministry of Environment’s 2024 PROPER assessment.

Harita Nickel follows strict safety, health, and environmental standards. It applies the SMK3 system for processing and refining, and the SMKP system for mining. These efforts are recognized with international certifications: ISO 45001:2018 for safety and ISO 14001:2015 for the environment.

“We extend our highest appreciation to all Harita employees for their dedication and collaboration. We are optimistic that the IRMA audit results will positively impact not only Harita Nickel but also set new benchmarks for the broader Indonesian mining industry,” Roy concluded
