Amidst the push for national nickel downstreaming, Harita Nickel emphasized that the success of the industry is not only measured by production capacity, but also the environmental responsibility and safety that goes beyond compliance. This message was the company's main emphasis when participating in Minerba Convex 2025, which was held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on October 15-16, 2025.
Through a panel discussion themed “Applying Sustainability Best Practices in Nickel Downstream Development: The HSE Perspective of Harita Nickel,” Harita Nickel’s HSE director, Tonny Gultom, conveyed the importance of implementing Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) practices that go beyond compliance. The implementation of safety and environmental standards must extend beyond mere compliance with national regulations, enabling management to be more integrated and aligned with the demands of the global market.

“Beyond compliance is not just a matter of following the rules. We cannot just stop at the limit of national regulations, as more than 62% of the world's nickel market originates from Indonesia. Environmental management must be carried out as a whole, from the construction of drainage systems for water regulation, the use of slag as a building material, to biodiversity studies around the operational area,” said Tonny Gultom.
According to him, Indonesia’s strategic position as the world’s leading nickel supplier requires more advanced mining and processing practices so that Indonesia’s downstream products can be accepted by international markets that are increasingly selective about sustainability aspects.
In his presentation, Tonny explained that Harita Nickel has a sustainability framework based on three main pillars: climate change, good governance, and human rights. This framework forms the basis for the implementation of an integrated HSE system across all of the company’s operations, from mining to smelters and refineries.
“Talking about the sustainability framework, to achieve sustainability, there are several standards that must be met before moving forward. At Harita Nickel, this is realized through an integrated system between HSE and operations, combining SMKP for mining, SMK3 for smelters and refineries, as well as international standards such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and global initiatives such as GRI, RMI, and IRMA,” He explained.
Through the implementation of an integrated system, Harita Nickel ensures that health, occupational safety, and environmental management aspects are in line with the production operations. These practices, which exceed compliance requirements, are not only an obligation but also a manifestation of the company’s responsibility to support the transformation of Indonesia’s nickel industry towards sustainable and world-class downstreaming.

Tonny then concluded his session by inviting all stakeholders in the mining industry to strengthen collaboration towards the implementation of more consistent global standards.
“The hope is that the regulations in Indonesia will increasingly align with international standards so that their implementations can be more integrated in the field. This is both a challenge and an opportunity for us to continuously improve mining industry management quality and strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global supply chain,” he concluded.

In mining activities, one of the most crucial environmental issues is water management. To ensure that water flowing from mining areas remains safe for the environment, Harita Nickel implements an integrated rainwater management system through the construction of sediment ponds. These facilities are located at several points across the mining area, including around Kawasi Village on Obi Island, North Maluku. 
These sediment ponds demonstrate Harita Nickel's firm commitment to maintaining water quality, protecting the surrounding environment, and providing a sense of security for the surrounding community, particularly in Kawasi Village, which is located near to the operational area.

<h2 dir="ltr">What is a Sediment Pond and Why is it Important?</h2>
A sediment pond, or settling pond, is a temporary holding pond that collects runoff from mining areas. In this pond, solid particles and sediments settle at the bottom, allowing the discharged water to become clearer and meet environmental quality standards.
The primary functions of a sediment pond include:
· &nbsp; Reduce Total Suspended Solids (TSS) levels to prevent water pollution.
· &nbsp; Maintain the quality of river and sea water, which are essential to daily life for local communities.
· &nbsp; Control runoff during the rainy season to prevent flooding or excessive turbidity in bodies of water.

Harita Nickel builds its sediment ponds with carefully planned designs, taking into account the catchment area where water naturally flows. One example is<a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/jaga-lingkungan-unit-bisnis-harita-nickel-berkolaborasi-kelola-air-2"> Tuguraci Pond 2</a>, which can accommodate water flows of up to 10,000–50,000 m³ per hour, which is especially important during periods of heavy rainfall.
Furthermore, Harita Nickel routinely adjusts the pond design and capacity to reflect the size of the catchment area being cleared. This means that each time new land is cleared, the pond system is expanded to accommodate the potential for rainwater runoff. This way, the risk of sediment overflow is minimized.

Sediment Ponds: Harita Nickel’s Commitment to Mine Water Management

Harita Nickel has successfully produced electrolytic cobalt since August 2024. This step reinforces the company's commitment to downstream nickel processing and confirms its important role in the global electric vehicle (EV) battery industry supply chain.&nbsp;
Electrolytic cobalt, along with nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate, are derived from the purification of limonite ore using High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology. These products serve as the main raw materials for producing EV battery precursors.&nbsp;
Electrolytic cobalt is a form of pure cobalt metal produced through an electrochemical process called electrowinning. This process uses an electric current to separate cobalt from an electrolyte solution. The output is a high-purity metal, reaching up to 99.98%, which is widely used in modern technologies such as rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, specialty steels such as superalloys for turbines and aircraft engines, magnets, also chemical catalysts in chemical industries.

Physically, electrolytic cobalt is a solid, grayish-silver metal with a metallic sheen. It is typically marketed in various forms such as cathodes, briquettes, thin sheets, flakes, or cut pieces, depending on industrial needs.&nbsp;
Harita Nickel’s electrolytic cobalt is produced in high-purity sheets measuring 70 cm x 70 cm, with a thickness of +/- 5mm, and weighing 35-40 kg. For ease of handling and export, the sheets are precision-cut into 4 cm × 4 cm pieces and securely packed in 250-kg drums, ready for delivery to global customers.&nbsp;

Rico Windy Albert, Head of Technical Support Department at Harita Nickel, stated that the goal of nickel downstreaming is to increase the value of nickel and cobalt ores into high-value products, especially key raw materials for EV batteries. Rico is optimistic that this downstreaming effort will boost economic growth, create jobs, and establish Indonesia as a global producer of battery raw materials.&nbsp;
A landmark achievement in Indonesia’s nickel downstream industry was recorded by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), a Harita Nickel subsidiary that pioneered the country’s first HPAL facility on Obi Island. PT HPL has already succeeded in producing Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), which is further refined into high-value products such as crystalline nickel sulfate (NiSO₄·6H₂O), cobalt sulfate (CoSO₄·6H₂O), and the latest innovation is electrolytic cobalt.
This significant achievement in nickel downstreaming was accomplished by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), a Harita Nickel business unit that operates the first HPAL facility at the Pulau Obi site, and the first of its kind in Indonesia. To date, PT HPL has successfully produced Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), which is then further processed into nickel sulfate (NiSO₄​), cobalt sulfate (CoSO₄), and most recently, electrolytic cobalt.&nbsp;
In addition to PT HPL, Harita Nickel also owns PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (ONC), its second HPAL facility with three production lines that have been operating at full capacity since August 2024.&nbsp;
“This is truly an extraordinary achievement for Harita Nickel, and we, as members of the Harita family, should be proud to be a key part of the downstreaming initiative championed by the Indonesian government,” he said.
Meanwhile, Roy Arman Arfandy, President Director of Harita Nickel, stated that the company is committed to sustainable practices to address global industry challenges. A key step the company has taken is to voluntarily undergo an audit by the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA).
“We understand that ESG is no longer just about compliance, but also about competitiveness,” he said.&nbsp;
Roy cited various initiatives—such as building sedimentation ponds, managing processing waste, and using waste cooking oil from employee canteens as an additional energy source—as evidence of the company’s dedication to environmental responsibility.&nbsp;
“Our ability to compete and grow depends on adapting our operations to ever-changing standards while maintaining efficiency and cost excellence,” he concluded.

Harita Nickel Strengthens Key Position in EV Battery Industry with Electrolytic Cobalt Production

The aroma of spices and freshly grilled fish filled the air at the commercial area of the new residential complex in Kawasi Village. In a spirit of togetherness, Harita Nickel held the Obi Food Festival 2025 under the theme “Torang Baku Sedap” (“Let’s Share the Flavor”), as part of its commitment to preserving traditional cuisine while strengthening the local economy. The event, held on October 28, 2025, provided a platform for the community to celebrate both their culinary heritage and regional identity.
The festival became a special moment for residents—especially the women of Kawasi Village—to showcase their creativity and pride in North Maluku cuisine. Five cooking teams competed by preparing dishes using local ingredients and traditional recipes, from fresh fish and local spices to various agricultural products. Each dish was judged for its taste, presentation, and authenticity, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The Kawasi Village Government welcomed the initiative positively. “Let us support Harita Nickel’s efforts to help strengthen the local economy,” said Frans Datang, Secretary of Kawasi Village, in his remarks.
From within the company, Harita Saruma—Harita Nickel’s content creator team—also contributed to the excitement by sharing coverage of the event through their personal social media accounts. Their posts encouraged fellow employees to appreciate local culinary culture and support community-made products sold in the commercial area, aligning with the company’s efforts to revitalize Kawasi’s local economy.

The festival also brought pride to its participants. Lusiana La Jame, leader of the winning team, expressed her joy over their achievement. “This competition motivates us, as mothers, to reintroduce our traditional dishes and turn them into small business opportunities that can improve our family income,” she said enthusiastically.
Beyond the cooking competition, the festival also featured a communal lunch where all dishes prepared by participants were enjoyed together by representatives from Harita Nickel management, village officials, employees, and local residents. The shared meal symbolized genuine collaboration between the company, government, and community.
More than just a culinary competition, the Obi Food Festival 2025 reflects Harita Nickel’s commitment to strengthening community independence and preserving cultural heritage. By involving both residents and employees, the company reinforces that sustainability is not only built through responsible industrial practices but also through the preservation of local values that nurture social life on Obi Island.

Harita Nickel Promotes Local Culinary Heritage Through Obi Food Festival 2025

In the midst of the bustling, magnificent nickel downstream industry in the Obi Industrial Zone, a historical legacy continues to be maintained with full commitment by Harita Nickel: Fort De Brill. This ancient fort is not just a monument; it's tangible proof of how history can be preserved amidst the wave of modernization.
According to the Atlas of Mutual Heritage, Fort De Brill—also known as Fort Den Brill—is a Dutch colonial relic built in 1674. Initially made of wood, the fort was fortified with stone in 1678. Its purpose was to protect the spice monopoly from other European traders, who at the time were under the rule of the Bacan Sultanate.
According to W. Ph Coolhas (1923), the fort's location on the west coast of Obi Island allowed the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to monitor every ship sailing towards the Banda Sea. From there, they could observe movements from the directions of Bacan, Sula, and the Banda Sea. At that time, spices like cloves and nutmeg were worth more than gold—commodities that were the primary reason European nations competed to control the Nusantara archipelago.
<h3 dir="ltr">From Neglected Ruin to Protected Heritage</h3>
The condition of Benteng De Brill when it was rediscovered in 2007 was concerning. According to the Jakarta Architectural Documentation Center (PDA), only a few sides of the fort remained intact. The rest were just stone ruins.
Tonny Gultom, Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at Harita Nickel, echoed this sentiment. He revealed that when the company first started mining activities on Obi Island in 2010, they stumbled upon the Benteng De Brill. They then sought information about the fort's history from local residents.
"When it was first found, it was covered in thick, overgrown trees, and the local residents were afraid to go there. But we cleared the area and maintained it by adding a protective fence," Tonny said.
After the discovery, Fort De Brill was then registered as a Cultural Heritage site under the management of the Cultural Preservation Agency (BPK) Region XXI of North Maluku Province.
"Fort De Brill has been recorded in our database as a preserved cultural heritage site since 2010. In its implementation, we collaborate with Harita Nickel as the area's manager," explained Irwansyah, a Cultural Attendant at BPK XXI.
<h3 dir="ltr">Preserving Heritage Amidst Future Projects</h3>
Today, Fort De Brill remains in its original location on the west coast of Obi Island. Its position is strategic, situated near the port that serves as the main entry point for Harita Nickel's employees and guests. The employees call it the South Coast (Pansel) Port, given its location on the south side of Kawasi beach, where Harita Nickel's site is located.
Instead of viewing the ancient fort as an obstacle, Harita Nickel saw it as an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to social and cultural responsibility. The company not only cleaned up the fort's area but also built a protective fence and installed information signs to educate both the public and its employees about the site's historical value.
Although only ruins remain, the fort is estimated to have dimensions of 6x6 square meters with a height of about 3 meters. Inside, a recess believed to have been a cannon emplacement is still visible. Benteng De Brill is one of over 40 forts scattered across North Maluku, but its preservation within an industrial zone makes it truly special.
"Preserving cultural heritage sites within this mining area is part of our commitment to conducting responsible and sustainable mining operations," Tonny asserted.
Harita Nickel’s actions show that economic development and the preservation of historical sites can go hand in hand. Amid Indonesia's great ambition to become a key player in the global nickel industry, the story of Benteng De Brill on Obi Island is a crucial reminder that future progress must stand on the foundations of the civilizations that have shaped the nation's identity.

Fort De Brill: A Cultural Heritage Preserved Amidst the Obi Industrial Zone

The Spirit of Indonesia’s Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda) came alive at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) employee complex, where hundreds of young Harita Nickel employees gathered for Youth Forum 2025. Carrying the theme “The Voice of Indonesian Youth: Echoing Through Creative Content,” the event became a platform for Harita’s young talents to learn, share, and ignite inspiration through digital creativity.
Unlike previous events, this Youth Forum offered a fresh and vibrant festival-style concept. In collaboration with Hero Creative, Harita Nickel’s internal creative team, the event combined inspirational talks, live music performances, and local culinary delights. Strings of colorful lights and lanterns illuminated the path to the main stage, setting a lively and youthful tone for the evening.
The event opened with acoustic performances and stand-up comedy, breaking the ice and drawing laughter from the crowd. Amid applause and conversation, employees from various Harita Nickel business units enjoyed an array of food stalls spread across the venue.

In his opening remarks, Roy Martua Sigiro, Deputy Head of Technical Support at PT Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS), emphasized that the Youth Forum serves as a platform to spark enthusiasm and unlock the potential of Harita Nickel’s young generation.
“Through this Youth Forum, we want to show that the voices of Harita Nickel’s youth don’t stop within the Obi site—they resonate outward, reaching families, friends, and the wider community. The spirit of collaboration and idea-sharing is the key to building a strong and highly competitive team,” he said.
The inspiration-sharing session, led by Yoan Isey Jeaniti, Digital &amp; Social Media Manager of Harita Nickel, featured three creative content creators: Marischka Prudence (Prue), Febrian, and Kadek Arini. They shared best practices on crafting compelling hooks, structuring stories, maintaining stylistic consistency, and building community trust authentically.
Prue underscored the power of storytelling in delivering impactful messages, citing the Koin untuk Prita movement as an example of digital solidarity creating real social change.&nbsp;

Febrian, known for his environmental and social narratives, shared practical tips for crafting compelling stories. “Start with the most engaging part as your hook—make your audience curious enough to follow until the end,” he advised.
Meanwhile, Kadek Arini emphasized the importance of building value-based digital communities rooted in trust. “Trust is the foundation of a community. When you hold onto your values and integrity, your audience will believe in you and move together to create positive change,” she said.
During their visit to Obi, the speakers also toured the mining and processing facilities, explored Obi’s natural beauty, and met beneficiaries of Harita Nickel’s Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) programs.
Their messages echoed the spirit of Youth Pledge Day, inspiring Harita Nickel’s young generation to take initiative, speak up, and keep learning. “Don’t be afraid to start—small actions can make a big impact,” said Febrian.

For many participants, Youth Forum was an inspiring and memorable experience. Wigit Yan Sukmawan, Community Development Supervisor at Harita Nickel, said he was thrilled to meet creators he had long followed online.
Meanwhile, Christoforus Nanda Rahardian, Employee Relations Specialist at Harita Nickel, described the event as both entertaining and educational. “Youth Forum successfully delivered an engaging event for the younger generation—entertaining yet full of meaningful insights,” he noted.

South Halmahera, October 22, 2025 — Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development by supporting the agricultural sector on Obi Island, South Halmahera Regency. Through the SENTANI program (Obi Food Security Center), the company continues to promote food resilience and improve the economic welfare of communities within its operational area.
To support this initiative, Harita Nickel collaborated with the Obi Subdistrict Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimcam), the Obi Agricultural Extension Center (BPP), Brimob Company 3 Battalion C, and the Buton Village Government to carry out a joint rice planting activity across 10.5 hectares of farmland in Buton Village, Obi District. The activity, which involved two farmer groups under the company’s guidance, symbolizes the synergy between the private sector, government, and local communities in strengthening regional food security.
Harita Nickel’s Community Affairs General Manager, Dindin Makinudin, explained that SENTANI is part of the company’s Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM), designed as a center for sustainable agricultural development. The program provides cultivation guidance, infrastructure and facility support, as well as market access for local farmers.

The SENTANI program currently involves 30 active members, consisting of farmer groups, the village-owned enterprise (BUMDes), and the Buton Village Government. Previously, Harita Nickel’s assisted farmers received the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainable Village Development (PDB) Awards 2024 from the Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration (Kemendes PDT) and the Indonesian Social Sustainability Forum (ISSF) for their contribution to strengthening village development through BUMDes-based initiatives.
In addition to SENTANI, Harita Nickel has implemented several other agricultural empowerment programs, including Salam Kawasi as an integrated agricultural learning center in Kawasi Village, Kabar Mapan in Baru Village, Impresif in Jikatamo Village, and Obi Sehati in South Obi District.

One of them is Christian Mamuaya, Medical Supervisor at Harita Nickel Obi Clinic (KHNO), who instills compassion and humanity in every aspect of healthcare delivery.<o:p></o:p>
Since joining the company in 2020, the Manado-born professional has worked to provide healthcare services that are not only swift and responsive but also empathetic toward every individual he cares for.<o:p></o:p>
When Christian first arrived at Site&nbsp;Obi, the company clinic was modest, consisting of only five rooms and a handful of medical staff. Today, KHNO has grown into a much more comprehensive health facility with more than 80 medical personnel, multiple treatment rooms, and various supporting amenities.<o:p></o:p>

However, for Christian, progress is not measured merely by physical expansion but by the quality of relationships between medical staff and patients.&nbsp;“What matters most isn’t just the facilities—it’s how we treat those who come to us for help,” he said.<o:p></o:p>
Christian firmly believes that empathy lies at the heart of healthcare. He vividly recalls one experience that reshaped his perspective as a medical professional—when he treated a foreign worker struggling with depression during the pandemic. The patient had withdrawn completely, refusing to interact or even eat.<o:p></o:p>
“The solution wasn’t medication—it was empathy. I brought him some red sticky rice porridge and simply talked with him. From there, he started to open up and accept help,” he recalled.<o:p></o:p>
For Christian, moments like these affirm that empathy can be the most fundamental form of healing.&nbsp;“Sometimes, people don’t need a complex diagnosis—they just need to be heard. And that alone can make them feel better,” he added.<o:p></o:p>
This belief is what Christian continuously imparts to his team at KHNO: that every medical action must be accompanied by genuine care. Over time, he has strengthened this culture of empathetic service through regular training and daily practice, ensuring that every medical professional understands the importance of compassionate communication—especially when dealing with patients under physical or emotional stress.<o:p></o:p>

Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to decarbonization and sustainable energy transition through its participation in the International Bangkok Climate Action Week (BKKCAW) 2025, held on September 28–29 in Bangkok. This international forum, themed “Renewable Energy and Mining Synergies in Indonesia,” brings together industry players, academics, and stakeholders to discuss the application of renewable energy and the challenges of decarbonization in the mining world.
Zahedi Zakaria, Harita Nickel's ESG Transformation Manager, presented Harita Nickel's concrete steps in its decarbonization efforts within its operational areas and the challenges involved.
"We operate on Obi Island, South Halmahera, about 200 km from the national power source, far from the energy hub, but we remain committed to consistently applying decarbonization principles. The challenges are great, but that's where innovation and collaboration come in," he said.
Various decarbonization efforts have been implemented by Harita Nickel, ranging from the construction of coal dome facilities to reduce dust, the installation of solar panels in office areas and worker dormitories, to the use of used cooking oil as an alternative fuel.
"Harita Nickel continues to develop decarbonization potential. Working with researchers and the government to support decarbonization targets, both at the operational level and at the national level," Zahedi added.
In addition to representatives from Harita Nickel, this discussion panel also featured Dr. Adji Kawigraha from BRIN, Fahmi Islami from Mandala Consulting, Dr. Muyi Yang from Ember Energy, and Dr. Rachel Zhou from Reach Advisory. The experts shared their insights on the application of renewable energy and the synergy among the mining sector in Indonesia.

Harita Nickel Emphasizes Decarbonization and Renewable Energy in Bangkok Climate Action Week 2025

A recent field visit by Perkumpulan Telapak, a non-governmental organization focused on environmental and social governance, together with a team of academics from Khairun University (Unkhair) Ternate, has confirmed that the marine ecosystem surrounding Harita Nickel’s operational area on Obi Island remains well-preserved and in good condition.
The joint team conducted observations at several points, including one located approximately 500 meters from the shoreline and another about five kilometers offshore. The results revealed clear seawater conditions, with artificial reefs developed from processed nickel slag showing natural coral growth.
According to Dickson Aritonang, Vice Chairman of Perkumpulan Telapak, the clarity of the surrounding waters reflects Harita Nickel’s strong environmental management performance.
“The water clarity is remarkable. Even at a depth of four to five meters, we could clearly see the artificial reefs developed by Harita Nickel already covered with naturally grown corals,” said Dickson, adding that the nickel slag-based reefs showed no signs of disrupting the surrounding marine ecosystem.
Dickson also observed the wastewater management infrastructure on land. He mentioned two main sediment ponds he observed, namely the Bunaken and Tuguraci ponds, covering approximately 20 and 40 hectares, respectively. Both are equipped with a Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) and SPARING, a water quality monitoring tool directly connected to the Ministry of Environment.
"If the water quality isn't up to standard, the device will immediately send data to the Ministry. There's no grey area there," he explained. He assessed that the drainage and sedimentation system for mine runoff and wastewater at Harita Nickel demonstrates a solid oversight structure.
While acknowledging that mining activities have an impact, he emphasized the importance of appreciating the recovery measures. "Harita Nickel must remain open to independent evaluation. Because sustainability is not just about business performance, but also about social and environmental responsibility."
The findings of Dickson and the Telapak team align with the observations of the Unkhair academic team led directly by Prof. Dr. M. Janib Achmad, S.Pi., M.Sc. He also observed that Harita Nickel's operational activities are carried out with socially, economically, and environmentally responsible principles. "Observation results show that all the physical parameters of seawater we monitored meet quality standards. This indicates that the ecological pattern in the waters is maintained," he said.
Prof. Janib stressed the importance of using technology and implementing approaches oriented towards sustainable development. "These principles must continue to be upheld, so that the benefits truly reach the wider community, not just the industrial sector," he asserted.
Despite coming from different backgrounds, both Dickson Aritonang and Prof. Janib voiced the same common thread: environmental protection must be carried out with firmness, transparency, and oversight. And if this consistency is maintained, it is not impossible that what Harita Nickel is building on Obi Island today will become an important reference for more sustainable mining governance in the future.
