Kawasi, December 21, 2025 – The New Settlement of Kawasi Village on Obi Island became the site for the dedication and inauguration of three facilities of the Maluku Protestant Church (GPM) on Sunday, 21 December 2025. The facilities include the Imanuel Church building, the pastor’s house, and a multipurpose hall. The event reflected strong collaboration between the church, Harita Nickel, the local government, and the community to strengthen congregational life and promote diversity in South Halmahera.
The Immanuel Church Building covers an area of 822 square meters. More than a place of worship, the church is expected to serve as a center for community development and social interaction, providing long-term benefits for the congregation and the people of Kawasi Village.

Vice Regent of South Halmahera, Helmi Umar Muchsin, expressed his appreciation to church leaders, the congregation, and Harita Nickel for their collaboration in developing the facilities. He emphasized that places of worship hold deeper meaning beyond physical structures.
“With the inauguration of Immanuel Church in Kawasi, we reaffirm that South Halmahera is a regency that upholds the values of tolerance and inclusivity. From places of worship like this, values of peace, mutual respect, and harmonious coexistence continue to grow and be maintained,” said Helmi.
He also expressed hope that Immanuel Church would function not only as a place of worship, but also as a space for social interaction and character building that positively impacts the surrounding community.
“On behalf of the Government of South Halmahera Regency, I congratulate the congregation on the inauguration of Immanuel Church. May the pastors, church leaders, and all members of the congregation continue to strengthen their faith and work together to build a harmonious South Halmahera,” he added.
Meanwhile, Vice General Secretary of the GPM Synod, Rev. M. Takaria, stated that the dedication and inauguration serve as an important moment for the congregation to continue growing amid today’s challenges. He highlighted the importance of unity, solidarity, and fellowship among church members, as well as the role of the church in supporting gospel ministry and community development, especially for the younger generation.
“This moment strengthens partnerships that support the congregation and promotes harmony across religious and ethnic groups as a foundation for peaceful social life on Obi Island,” said Rev. M. Takaria.
External Relations Manager of Harita Nickel, Apolinavis Mbata, explained that the inauguration of these facilities reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“This inauguration is part of our commitment to supporting the SDGs and reflects harmonious collaboration among multiple stakeholders on Obi Island. We hope these three facilities will be used optimally to support religious activities, social programs, and community development,” said Apolinavis.
He added that the development of the church complex aligns with Harita Nickel’s Community Development Program (PPM) and the company’s sustainability vision to grow and progress together with communities around its operational areas.
