Harita Nickel Makes History as the First Nickel Company to Win the Green Innovation Award at ACES Awards

Harita Nickel, through PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), once again conducted a water pollution control drill to enhance the team's preparedness in responding to environmental emergencies. Through this annual exercise, the company reaffirms its commitment to maintaining water quality and complying with environmental management standards in its operational areas.

This drill focused on handling conditions when the water resulting from the treatment process showed parameters outside the quality standards. The activities carried out at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) facility involved the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team of PT HJF as the party responsible for managing domestic wastewater. This training was also part of fulfilling the ISO 14001 standard related to preparedness and emergency response systems.

The drill began with a scenario in which water quality test results showed that dissolved oxygen (DO) levels did not meet quality standards. The team then carried out a series of emergency response procedures to restore water quality parameters to normal.

Environment Superintendent of HJF, Bobby Loys Lengga, explained the steps taken by the team when the condition was discovered. "We verified our initial findings through testing at the outlet, and the results still showed DO outside the standard. After that, we contacted the wastewater treatment plant operator to immediately install a pump to help the air flow into the water (venturi pump) and repair the blower system," he said.

After corrective action was taken, the team conducted another test. The results showed that the DO value was back above the quality standard. Giovanni emphasized the importance of periodic exercises like this. "Preventive measures such as this ensure that the water discharged from the WWTP always meets quality standards before flowing into water bodies. In addition to preventing potential negative environmental impacts, this activity also educates the team on the importance of maintaining water quality," he added.

This water pollution control drill is one of three annual environmental drills conducted by the environment team, covering water, air, and hazardous waste management. All of the drills are designed to ensure preparedness and consistency in the implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) in the event of a potential emergency.

Through this training, Harita Nickel ensures that environmental monitoring and management in the company's operational areas continue to be conducted in accordance with established standards. This step also demonstrates the company's commitment to implementing responsible mining practices.

Harita Nickel Conducts Water Quality Emergency Drill To Reinforce Pollution Control

Harita Nickel operates nickel downstream facilities on Obi Island with the support of more than 23,000 workers. These massive operational activities and daily consumption generated high volumes of organic waste. If not managed properly, the waste can cause odors, produce methane gas, and has the potential to contaminate the soil and water around the operational area.

In response to this challenge, Harita Nickel developed KUSO (Kelola Ulang Sampah Organik or Organic Waste Management), an initiative by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, aimed at transforming food waste into organic fertilizer as part of the implementation of circular economy principles on Obi Island.

Interestingly, the name ‘KUSO’ not only reflects the process of managing organic waste, but is also inspired by the endemic animal of Obi Island, the Obi cuscus (Phalanger rothschildi), which is known locally as kuso. This nocturnal marsupial symbolizes the harmony and the unique biodiversity of Obi, while also serving as a reminder that every environmental management effort is inherently linked to the preservation of life on the island.

“Our KUSO program began in March 2024 with the processing of organic waste from the employee canteen. Now, this program is having a real impact, with a total of around 7.4 tonnes of organic waste that have been processed as of November 2025,” explained Imam Agus Faisyal, Junior Environment Compliance Engineer at PT TBP. He added that sorting waste at source is key to the success of composting at the CAKRA Composting House.

The CAKRA Compost House is a facility that processes food waste into compost through an organic process at the Harita Nickel site. The facility itself was chosen in line with the theme of the puppet (wayang) show, where "Cakra" symbolizes protection and balance. This philosophy is translated into a mission to restore the natural cycle by turning food waste into a new and useful resource.

Upon arrival at the CAKRA Compost House, organic waste is chopped and mixed with wood chips or dry leaves to maintain a balanced carbon-nitrogen ratio. The mixture is then placed in a closed composter and treated with Miko Local Organism (MOL) as a bioactivator. This process is marked by rising temperatures inside the composter, reflecting active microbial decomposition.

“The composting process is carried out aerobically and requires regular turning to maintain oxygen flow and moisture,” said Imam.

As of November 2025, the CAKRA compost house has collected 7.4 tons of organic waste. Approximately 60% has been turned into around 4.4 tons of solid compost, while the liquid fertilizer produced ranges from 370 to 741 liters. All of these organic products are used for the maintenance of green spaces, nurseries, and reclamation in the company's operating areas.

PT TBP’s Senior Environment Compliance Engineer, M. Saifullah Nijar, emphasised that KUSO is the first step towards implementing more extensive organic waste management. “We hope that this program can be replicated independently in other business units, so that its benefits can be even greater,” he said.

KUSO complements Harita Nickel's other circular economy initiatives, including the use of used bottles as biofilters in Wastewater Treatment Plants, the conversion of plastic waste into alternative fuel, and the use of used cooking oil as a substitute for coal in smelter facilities. This series of efforts underscores the company's commitment to reducing processing waste, strengthening resource efficiency, and maintaining environmental sustainability on Obi Island.

KUSO: Harita Nickel's Solution to Transform Food Waste into Organic Fertiliser

Amid the growing momentum of Indonesia’s nickel downstream industry, Harita Nickel on Obi Island, South Halmahera, demonstrates that industrial progress can go hand in hand with environmental care. For Dr. Tri Edhi Budhi Soesilo, M.Sc., Academician of the School of Environmental Science at Universitas Indonesia—who has visited Harita Nickel’s operations several times—this commitment is not mere rhetoric but a reality observed in the field.

“I see harmony between the upstream and downstream sectors, integrated seamlessly. From water to air management, everything is designed comprehensively and interconnected,” he said.

During his visit, Dr. Budhi highlighted four environmental innovations that, in his view, deserve to be models for the mining industry in Indonesia:

1. DSTF: A Tailings Management Innovation Worth Patenting

One of Harita Nickel’s major breakthroughs is the Dry Stack Tailing Facility (DSTF), a technology that manages Nickel Ore Processing Residue (SHP) by reducing its water content until it becomes solid. This method minimizes the risk of water contamination and enables wider reuse of materials for land reclamation.

“DSTF deserves to be patented. It’s not only technically sound but also demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability,” said Dr. Budhi.

2. Research-Based Reclamation: Turning Slag into Fertile Planting Media

Harita Nickel has made significant strides in post-mining land rehabilitation. Going beyond administrative requirements, the company’s environmental team conducts experiments to find the most effective planting media composition.

Trials involve mixing overburden soil with nickel slag in various ratios to enhance the fertility of reclaimed land.

“This approach shows a willingness to learn and innovate. It’s not just a formal reclamation effort but an ongoing scientific process,” Dr. Budhi noted.

3. Protecting Kawasi Springs and Lake Karo: A Rapid Response System for Sustaining Life

Water is a central focus in Harita Nickel’s environmental management. Every drop from mining areas undergoes treatment before being discharged back into the environment.

Monitoring at community water sources such as Kawasi Springs and Lake Karo consistently shows good and well-maintained water quality.

“I witnessed a very effective quick-response mechanism. Once a potential issue arises, all departments immediately coordinate to ensure the community isn’t affected. This is real accountability,” he emphasized.

4. 24-Hour Clean Air: Real-Time Emission Monitoring

Beyond water and soil, air quality is also strictly monitored. Harita Nickel uses Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) and Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems to reduce emissions from plant operations.

All air quality parameters are monitored in real time, 24 hours a day, with an automatic alarm system that activates if thresholds are exceeded.

“Emission control of this level is rarely seen in industrial operations. It reflects genuine corporate responsibility toward the environment and society,” said Dr. Budhi.

For Dr. Budhi, sustainability is not just about outcomes but about consistency in process. Routine documentation, cross-departmental collaboration, and a readiness to continually improve form the foundation of a responsible industry.

He concluded with a thoughtful reflection: “Nothing is ever perfect, but what I see here is sincerity. And from sincerity comes sustainable innovation.”

The harmony between industrial downstream development and environmental preservation, as reflected in Harita Nickel’s operations on Obi Island, stands as proof that the future of Indonesia’s nickel industry can—and should—be built upon the foundation of ecological responsibility and continuous innovation.

Four Green Innovations by Harita Nickel Set an Example for the National Mining Industry

The long-awaited aspiration of residents of the New Kawasi Village Settlement to obtain legal certainty over land ownership was realized in mid-November 2025, following the issuance of five land certificates earlier in February. On that occasion, the Government of South Halmahera Regency handed over 23 land ownership certificates to residents. The certificates were officially presented by the Head of the Housing and Settlement Areas Agency (Perkim) of South Halmahera, Iqbal Hi Mustafa.

With the receipt of these land ownership certificates, residents of the New Kawasi Settlement expressed a greater sense of security, as they now possess clear legal certainty over the land they occupy.

One resident, Vera Baholo, conveyed her gratitude for the housing security they now enjoy. “Praise be to God, today we have received our land certificates. We are truly grateful to be able to live with such good facilities. I hope that residents who are still living in the old settlement will soon be able to move here as well, so they can enjoy the same rights,” she said.

A similar sentiment was shared by Heles, who described the certificate as a long-awaited legal foundation since first moving into the new settlement. She expressed hope that more residents would soon experience the same level of legal certainty.

Meanwhile, Saidi Jouronga also shared his happiness. “Alhamdulillah, this certificate is very meaningful. It provides clear legal certainty from the government, ensuring that our land rights are officially recognized and protected. I am truly delighted,” he remarked.

The Head of the South Halmahera Perkim Agency, Iqbal Hi Mustafa, emphasized that the asset legalization process for residents will continue to be accelerated. “Out of a total of 259 houses, 28 certificates have been completed. The remaining 231 certificates remain our priority. The government is making every effort to ensure that all Kawasi residents have housing that is not only adequate in terms of infrastructure, but also secure from a legal standpoint,” he stated during the certificate handover in November.

The New Kawasi Village Settlement program has demonstrably improved the quality of life for residents. They now benefit from significantly improved basic facilities, including 24-hour electricity and clean water, within an area developed by the Government of South Halmahera Regency with the support of Harita Nickel.

Harita Nickel supports the government’s efforts through cross-sector collaboration, ranging from the provision of infrastructure in the New Kawasi Village Settlement to process facilitation, ensuring that residents not only obtain decent housing but also legal certainty over their assets.

Realizing Legal Certainty, South Halmahera Regency Government Hands Over Land Certificates to Residents of Kawasi New Settlement

The quiet city of Belém, situated on the banks of the Amazon River, became the center of global attention during the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30). Amidst global discussions on the future of clean energy, Harita Nickel, an integrated and responsible nickel mining and processing company, shared a story from Obi Island about how operational and technological integration can provide real solutions for environmental protection.

COP30 is the annual climate conference of the United Nations (UN), where countries gather to negotiate and review global commitments to tackle climate change. This year, Brazil serves as a crucial forum for dialogue, bringing together different perspectives on energy transition and the future of sustainability.

During a dialogue session at the Indonesia Pavilion, Harita Nickel shared its operational approach that addresses emission challenges while maximizing the potential of Indonesia's strategic minerals. The integration of processes from mining and processing to refining on Obi Island has attracted the attention of many participants as it helps reduce the carbon footprint of logistics and optimizes ore utilization. This technology-based approach aligns with Indonesia's narrative of more responsible and efficient downstreaming.

One topic that sparked much discussion was the use of nickel slag, a type of processing byproduct, as a value-added construction material. From infrastructure development and soil remediation to environmental rehabilitation applications, this circular economy initiative demonstrates how processing byproducts can be transformed into new opportunities for sustainability.

"We want to show that processing byproducts is not the end of the process, but the beginning of new opportunities. With the right research, slag can become a safe and useful construction material. This is not just a concept, but something we are already implementing in the field," explained Aladin Sianipar, Vice President of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at Harita Nickel.

Harita Nickel's presence in Belém also opened up broader discussions with various stakeholders at the Indonesian Pavilion. The interactions that took place during the conference emphasize the idea that innovation, efficiency, and environmental responsibility can coexist in Indonesia's nickel industry.

This visit was not merely an appearance at an international forum, but an opportunity to showcase a more efficient, transparent, and innovation-based approach to industry. Through new insights, strategic collaboration, and encouragement to continually improve sustainability practices, companies see a significant opportunity for Indonesia to strengthen its position as a key player in the global energy transition.

Harita Nickel believes that industrialization and environmental awareness are not mutually exclusive, but rather can reinforce each other. COP30 is an important stepping stone towards that future.

From Obi to Belém, Harita Nickel's Innovation Footprint in a World Climate Forum

PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (Harita Nickel) has once again strengthened its position as a responsible mining industry player by receiving the 2025 Business and Human Rights (BHAM) Award. Presented by the SETARA Institute, this recognition validates the company’s consistency in integrating Business and Human Rights principles, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), and sustainability into its operational strategy.

Based on the Responsible Business Conduct (RBC) Benchmark, Harita Nickel achieved a score of 65 (Rating B), positioning the company as a BHR Early Adopting Company that meets human rights protection standards. This achievement places Harita Nickel among the 18 leading mining companies assessed for compliance with human rights standards.

Harita Nickel’s Director of Sustainability, Lim Sian Choo, emphasized that this achievement is more than an acknowledgment—it is a mandate for continuous improvement.

“This award reinforces Harita Nickel’s commitment to embedding human rights principles from policy to field operations. It is proof that the company is on the right track, while also serving as motivation to pursue continuous improvement in collaboration with all stakeholders,”
said Lim Sian Choo.

High Standards and Rigorous Due Diligence

The RBC Benchmark research, initiated by the SETARA Institute in collaboration with SIGI Research and Consulting, applies strict assessment criteria aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). The evaluation focuses on the extent to which companies embed human rights principles consistent with national regulations, including Presidential Regulation No. 60 of 2023 on the National Strategy for Business and Human Rights.

For Harita Nickel, this recognition reflects significant policy transformation in recent years. The company has issued a Human Rights Policy that is binding across all group entities and business partners, referencing global standards such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and ILO conventions.

This commitment is further strengthened through the implementation of Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) conducted with the involvement of an independent party, the Foundation for International Human Rights Reporting Standards (FIHRRST). The findings from this due diligence process form the basis for ongoing improvements in labor practices, community relations, and an effective and transparent grievance mechanism.

Tangible Impact for Communities

Harita Nickel’s application of human rights principles goes beyond policy statements, manifesting in real improvements to community welfare around its operations on Obi Island, North Maluku. The 2024 Sustainability Report recorded a Community Satisfaction Index of 89 points and a Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 2.62.

The economic impact of respecting the rights of local residents is evident in the success of community development programs. One of the supported business units managed by 16 local residents generated revenues of up to Rp2.9 billion in 2024—demonstrating that mining operations can coexist with the fulfillment of economic rights within surrounding communities.

Moving forward, Harita Nickel is committed to using this recognition as a foundation for raising its operational standards. The company will continue strengthening stakeholder engagement to ensure that downstreaming and the energy transition progress in alignment with respect for human dignity and environmental stewardship.

Business and Human Rights Integration: Harita Nickel Receives the 2025 SETARA Institute Award

Harita Nickel's commitment to empowering communities surrounding the mining area has once again been proven through the graduation of 22 participants of the third batch of the PELITA (Youth Skills Improvement) Vocational Program. This time, the program was focused on mastering the Mandarin language to meet the strategic needs of the nickel downstream industry.

In the graduation ceremony that was held on Thursday (27/11) in Harita Nickel’s site on Obi Island, the graduates officially obtained HSK 3 (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi level 3) equivalent competency after undergoing six months of intensive training, covering 112 sessions or the equivalent of 192 hours of learning.

Harita Nickel’s Deputy Head of Technical Support, Agung Aribowo, affirms that this program was designed for the local communities to become more than just spectators amid the rapid growth of the nickel industry, but to become active participants.

"We understand that the success of downstreaming depends on strong human resources. These Mandarin vocational graduates are prepared to become vital communication bridges in a work environment that is integrated with international partners. This is a strategic added value for local people to enter the competitive global job market," said Agung.

The impact of this program was felt directly by Kasman La Jaani (18), a young man from Soligi Village. Facing economic challenges and difficult terrain to arrive at the language school, Kasman almost gave up halfway through. However, intensive assistance from the Community Development team of Harita Nickel managed to revive his spirit to study again, enabling him to become the second-best graduate.

“At the beginning, it was difficult because of the distance and weather; I felt like giving up. But the support from my mentors at Harita Nickel helped me get back on my feet. I believe that Mandarin language skills are the key to a brighter future for us, the children of Obi,” said Kasman optimistically.

The Head of the North Maluku Provincial Education Office for South Halmahera, Saimah Kasuba, expressed her deep appreciation for the program. She called it a significant breakthrough in regional vocational education.

“Ladies and gentlemen, you should take pride in the fact that the PELITA Mandarin vocational program at Harita Nickel is the first of its kind in South Halmahera. It is precisely this kind of collaboration that is needed to produce competent and competitive local human resources,” Saimah affirmed.

PELITA is part of Harita Nickel's Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program, which aims to improve local human resources through vocational education.

Prior to this third batch, the program has successfully transformed unskilled workers into certified skilled workers. A total of 14 graduates from the first batch are now working as wheel loader operators, while 28 graduates from the second batch are operating overhead cranes at a smelter owned by one of Harita Nickel's subsidiaries.

Harita Nickel's commitment to education does not stop at vocational training. In addition to PELITA, the company is also providing scholarships for 100 university students from Obi this year, building school infrastructure, and providing incentives for assistant teachers. All of this is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in creating quality education.

This educational ecosystem is built with the aim of producing local human resources who are not only technically competent but also highly competitive in responding to the increasingly competitive challenges of the global nickel downstream industry.

Harita Nickel Prepares Mandarin-Speaking Obi Youths for Global Industry Competition

Residents of Kawasi Village who have moved into the new settlement say that it has significantly improved their quality of life. The settlement, built by the South Halmahera Regency Government with support from Harita Nickel, now provides much better basic facilities, including electricity and clean water available 24 hours a day.

Yunince, one of the first residents to be relocated, said that the new settlement provides a cleaner and more comfortable environment than her previous home. "When it rains, it doesn't get muddy, and when it's hot, it doesn't get dusty. Here, we have electricity and water 24 hours a day. In my old house, I didn't use air conditioning, but here I have three air conditioners installed," she said.

The smiles of Yunince and her daughter reflect the new comfort they have found since moving into the more livable and well-organized Kawasi settlement.

Nur Eneng Rahmat (33) expressed similar sentiments, noting a significant improvement in comfort and tranquility. "My old house was very noisy because it was close to the main road. After trying to move back there, I realized that my new place is much more comfortable. So I ended up coming back here," she said.

In addition to physical comfort, Kawasi village's new settlement also opens up wider economic opportunities for its residents. Nur Eneng now runs a grocery and vegetable business with a daily turnover of Rp1–2 million. "The village here is more organized. I see my neighbors more often, and religious activities are also active," she added.

The head of the Kawasi Village Consultative Body (BPD), Reinhard Siar, said that the new settlement was designed to provide decent, safe housing equipped with adequate public facilities.

“Electricity and water supply are stable, the environment is more organized, and public facilities are available. The hope is that residents can make good use of these facilities and the local economy will grow," he explained.

The community economic area in Kawasi was developed with more organized and representative facilities as part of efforts to support local business growth and strengthen economic activities for residents.

The local government's support for the sustainability of this settlement program was also emphasized by the Head of the South Halmahera Public Housing and Settlement Area Agency (Perkim), Ikbal Hi. Mustafa. He ensured that the government would guarantee residents' land rights and prepare various additional programs until 2028.

“Land ownership rights are an important part of improving government services. Together with Harita Nickel, we are committed to providing the best for the residents of Kawasi,” he said.

Ikbal made this statement during the handover of land certificates to Kawasi residents who had moved into the new settlement, which was held jointly with the National Land Agency (BPN) in Kawasi on November 19, 2025.

Various initiatives that were held affirm Harita Nickel's commitment to supporting community welfare and health, which is one of the important aspects of the company's community service and empowerment program (PPM). Harita Nickel also scored 89 on the 2024 Community Satisfaction Index (IKM), with an average Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 2.62.
