Harita Nickel’s operation requires large amounts of electricity to support all its activities. This electricity is supplied via electrical installations and equipment located across various work areas. However, as electrical current is invisible, the dangers it poses are often not realised until contact occurs. That is why the proper management of electrical systems is a key component of the Critical Safety Compliance Protocol (<a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/cscp-cara-harita-jaga-keselamatan-di-area-berisiko-tinggi">CSCP</a>) framework.
Safety risks may arise from substandard installations, unsuitable equipment or work carried out by incompetent personnel. To manage these risks, every Harita employee must pay attention to the six safety aspects set out in the CSCP.
Before work commences, ensure that electrical installations and equipment are managed by competent personnel. Electricians, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) specialists in the electrical field, and electrical engineering staff must have the required training and certification.
Ensure the relevant documentation is in order. Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the installation, inspection and maintenance of equipment, as well as its use, must be available and communicated. Inspection records, lists of installations and equipment, and lists of qualified electricians must also be properly managed. Electrical installations in use must hold a Commissioning Certification (SLO) in accordance with the applicable regulations.
To manage work hazards and risks, electrical installations must comply with the General Requirements for Electrical Installations (PUIL) or other relevant industry standards. Any alterations, modifications or repairs to the installation must only be carried out by electrical engineers who possess the requisite competence in accordance with the regulations.
The condition of the electrical equipment and installations used must also comply with standards. Domestic electrical equipment’s use in the workplace is only permitted with the written authorisation of an officer or technician. An earthing system for the building and supporting installations must also be in place and inspected regularly to help protect workers and equipment from electrical faults.
Control measures must also be implemented on electrical panels. Isolation and locking systems, such as Lock-out/Tag-out (LOTO), must be used to prevent unauthorised access and protect workers during maintenance or repairs. Connections between cables or components must also use standard connectors to prevent short circuits or overheating.
Critical aspects relating to electrical installations must also be taken into account. Access to the company’s installation areas and electrical facilities must be monitored and restricted to prevent unauthorized entry. Work on installations in areas other than production must also be carried out by authorised personnel and comply with the relevant standards.
Furthermore, when carrying out repairs and maintenance on electrical installations, workers must ensure that no other facilities or activities are affected. This check must also be supported by communicating with all parties in the vicinity of the facilities and electrical installations who may be affected.
Once the work and inspections have been carried out, safety practices must still be reviewed through a management review. This review covers risk control in high-voltage areas, the maintenance and inspection of installations, and the competence of relevant staff and experts. Audits and assessments are also carried out at least once a year.
“For those of us who work with electricity on a large scale, electrical safety is not the responsibility of just one person. Recognising potential hazards, using equipment in accordance with regulations, and not carrying out work beyond one’s remit are all part of our collective efforts to protect people’s safety and maintain the reliability of equipment in the workplace,” concluded Endar Setiadi, PT Obi Sinar Timur’s (OST) Power Grid &amp; Photovoltaic Supervisor.
Understand the risks. Manage the hazards. Stop work if it is unsafe.

CSCP Series #4: Managing Electrical Installations and Equipment the Harita Way

Kawasi Village on Obi Island looked different from its usual days. Colorful costumes, lively music, dance performances, and the enthusiasm of participants filled the atmosphere. Amid their daily work routines, Insan Harita had the opportunity to perform, express their creativity, and enjoy a shared moment together through the 2026 Carnival Festival.
Carrying the theme “From Kawasi, We Embrace the World,” the Carnival Festival conveyed a message about the spirit of globalization growing from Obi. The theme also reflects how ideas, creativity, and potential emerging from Obi Island can reach beyond the island and make an impact on a wider stage.
The spirit was reflected in around 700 participants who joined 17 teams from various departments and mining contractors across Harita Nickel. With diverse backgrounds, each team brought its own concept to life through costumes, music, dance, and performances.
For the participants, the carnival became #CaranyaHarita a way to showcase interests and talents that may not always be visible in their daily routines. From developing concepts and preparing costumes to practicing together, every step became part of an experience that brought together different ideas and personalities.

<figcaption>The excitement of the 2026 Carnival Festival in Obi Industrial Estate.</figcaption>
</figure>
PIC of the 2026 Carnival Festival, Ryan Monginsidi, said the event is an annual program that consistently provides employees with a space to showcase their ideas.
“The carnival is an annual event organized by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada and one of the most unique platforms, where employees can showcase their creative ideas through costumes, dance, and music,” Ryan said.
One of the standout concepts came from the Human Resource and General Affairs (HRGA) team through its theme, “The Civilization of the World.” The concept took the audience on a journey through human civilization, from traditional life in the past to modernization and the age of technology. Human Resource and General Affairs Foreman at Harita Nickel, Arthur Siwi, said the concept was inspired by the development of human civilization from the past to the modern era.
“Through this concept, the story we wanted to convey is that Obi Island is part of the journey of world civilization. Through the downstream processing of nickel ore, Obi is now connected to the world and has become part of the development of the global industry,” Arthur added.
The idea was brought to life through costumes, music, movement, and visual elements. The combination earned the HRGA team a place among the top three winners of the 2026 Carnival Festival.
Behind the achievement was a process that was equally meaningful. Team members exchanged ideas, shared responsibilities, and practiced together to build a strong sense of teamwork. These moments made the carnival more than just a performance; they became part of the shared experience of Insan Harita.
<figure class="image align-center"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/Sosial/13092026_HN_Carnaval%20Festival%20TBP%202026_245.jpg" alt="The excitement of the 2026 Carnival Festival at Site Obi." width="720" height="480">
<figcaption>The excitement of the 2026 Carnival Festival in Obi Industrial Estate.</figcaption>
</figure>
Harita Nickel Operations Director, Younsel Evand Roos, hopes that the spirit behind the Carnival Festival will continue to grow.
“I hope the Carnival Festival will not only serve as a place for Insan Harita to express their creativity and ideas, but also as a space to strengthen the bonds of togetherness among employees,” Younsel said.
With 17 teams taking part, the 2026 Carnival Festival became a celebration that brought different stories together on one stage. Through every concept and performance, Insan Harita showed how interests, talents, and a spirit of togetherness can come together in one meaningful moment.
From Kawasi, we embrace the world. Not only through the creativity showcased on stage, but also through the spirit of Insan Harita to keep creating, collaborating, and supporting one another. Let the spirit of the Carnival Festival continue in our daily lives, as we keep creating, keep collaborating, and together build positive energy in the spirit of “One Harita, Looking Out for One Another.”

One Stage, Many Stories: The Spirit of Insan Harita at the 2026 Carnival Festival

Amid a prolonged dry season and unpredictable weather, the Millennial Farmers’ Group in Buton Village, Obi District, has achieved a rice yield of at least 6.5 tonnes per hectare, exceeding the national target of 5.7 tonnes per hectare.
The harvest covered 12.5 hectares of farmland and was part of the “Synergy to Build the Nation” Rice Harvest Festival held on Monday (7 September). The event brought together South Halmahera Agriculture Agency Head Suryatmi Aldjokja, representatives of the Obi Agricultural Extension Centre (BPP), the sub-district leadership coordination forum (Forkopincam), and village government representatives.
Based on crop-cutting sample results conducted by the field support team, yields reached at least 6.5 tonnes per hectare across several varieties, including Inpari, upland rice and Mentik Wangi. The harvest marked the first for the Millennial Farmers’ Group, which was established earlier this year.
Group Head Ruslan Kasman said the achievement came despite challenging weather conditions. The group’s initial planting was lost after heavy rainfall, while replanting was followed by a prolonged dry season.
“We almost gave up. We are grateful for the continued support from the government and the company, including assistance with irrigation, which has helped ensure a steady water supply,” Ruslan said.
Suryatmi said the first harvest demonstrated the group’s rapid progress while contributing to food security efforts in South Halmahera. She said agricultural development is aligned with the South Halmahera Government’s Agromaritime concept, which integrates the region’s agricultural, marine and fisheries potential in a coordinated and sustainable manner.
“Support and collaboration from various stakeholders, including the private sector, are essential. We are committed to improving farmers’ welfare,” Suryatmi said, while expressing her appreciation for Harita Nickel’s continued support for local food security initiatives.
The support is provided through the Obi Food Security Centre (SENTANI). The initiative has grown from two initial farmers’ groups to three: Milenial, Akemoriri and Batu Putih. Together, they have 42 members cultivating 30 hectares of farmland.
<figure class="image align-center"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/Lingkungan/07092026_HN_Panen%20Raya%20Desa%20Buton_104.jpg" alt="The Head of the South Halmahera Agriculture Agency, Suryatmi Aldjokja, performed a symbolic rice-cutting ceremony while attending the grand rice harvest in Buton Village, Obi District." width="720" height="480">
<figcaption>The Head of the South Halmahera Agriculture Agency, Suryatmi Aldjokja, performed a symbolic rice-cutting ceremony while attending the grand rice harvest in Buton Village, Obi District.</figcaption>
</figure>
This harvest season, the three groups are expected to harvest around 25 hectares. In addition to the Millennial group, Akemoriri and Batu Putih are also scheduled to harvest, with crop-cutting results from some plots exceeding 8 tonnes per hectare.
Harita Nickel Community Development Manager Broto Suwarso said the harvest amid abnormal weather conditions highlighted the importance of climate-resilient agriculture supported by local knowledge.
“Obi’s farmers have valuable local knowledge for reading weather patterns, understanding land conditions and managing water availability. This knowledge needs to be further developed to make agriculture more climate-resilient and strengthen food security,” Broto said.
Adaptation measures include selecting varieties suited to local conditions, managing irrigation on a rotational basis and using dryland areas for secondary crops. Interest in farming is also growing, with around 15 residents planning to establish a new farmers’ group.
Darwan Aduhasan, Chairman of the Pelangi Community (Pioneers of Obi Food Sovereignty) and a pioneer of agriculture in Buton Village, said this growing interest needs to be supported by an ecosystem that gives farmers greater confidence to invest in and expand their agricultural activities.
“For us, agriculture is the future, not the past. We want to build modern farmers and an agricultural sector that brings greater prosperity to the community,” he said.
The Millennial Farmers’ Group’s first harvest offers an early indication of Obi’s agricultural potential. With cross-sector collaboration, local knowledge and sustained support, agriculture can become an increasingly important contributor to food security and new economic opportunities for communities in Obi.

Obi’s Millenial Farmers Exceed National Rice Yield Target

Lifting equipment is used to support a range of tasks at Harita Nickel, from lifting to moving materials. As these tasks involve heavy loads, lifting operations carry risks that need to be controlled. Consequently, the management and operation of lifting equipment form a key part of the Critical Safety Compliance Protocol (CSCP) framework.
Incidents such as overloading, substandard equipment, and miscommunication can give rise to safety risks. To manage these risks, every Harita employee involved in lifting operations must pay attention to the six CSCP safety aspects, ranging from pre-work preparations to post-work assessments.
Before work commences, ensure that the work is carried out by competent personnel. Lifting equipment operators must hold the relevant certification and an Operating Licence (SIO). Lifting operations must also involve personnel with the appropriate qualifications, such as riggers and rigging inspectors.
It is also essential to ensure that all necessary documentation is in place. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for operations and the inspection and maintenance of equipment must be available and communicated to all parties. Every task must also be accompanied by a Work Permit, a Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and a Lifting Plan to serve as a basis to ensure the work is carried out safely.
Whilst work is in progress, hazard and risk management is crucial. The load must always be calculated, taking into account the equipment’s lifting capacity, the lifting configuration, the personnel involved, and on-site conditions such as the safety radius, obstacles such as power cables, and the conditions at the lifting site. Communication between the operator and the lifting team must also utilise appropriate methods, such as radio communication or standardised hand signals.
Another point to bear in mind is the load-bearing capacity of lifting equipment. Every piece of equipment and component, such as slings and shackles, has a safe working load (SWL) which sets the safe limit for its use. During the lifting process, the work area must also be controlled and access restricted to unauthorised persons.
Equipment’s condition must always be verified through checks, inspections, testing and certification in accordance with the relevant regulations. Lifting aids such as slings and shackles must also be checked before use. Equipment that is damaged or unfit for use must be marked ‘Out of Service’ and must not be used until it has been declared safe by authorised personnel.
Safety during lifting operations is not solely the responsibility of the team on site. Critical aspects such as conditions in the vicinity of the work area must also be considered. This includes ensuring that hazardous areas are clearly marked and that information regarding the hazards is communicated to those who may be affected.
For certain types of work, such as the removal of hazardous waste or work carried out near the boundaries of the operational area, consent from the affected parties must also be secured before the work commences.
Once the work has been completed, safety practices must be evaluated through regular management reviews. This includes the competence and operators’ operating licenses, as well as the results of equipment inspections and tests. Compliance with lifting equipment management regulations is also audited and assessed periodically to ensure that safety standards continue to be upheld.
Safety when working with lifting equipment depends on many factors. Good planning, competent personnel, suitable equipment, clear communication, and adherence to procedures are crucial to ensuring safety at work.
By implementing every aspect of safety, we can help ensure that work proceeds smoothly and safely, so that every Harita employee can return home safely.&nbsp;
Understand the risks. Control the hazards. Stop work if it is unsafe.

CSCP Series #3: How Harita Nickel Operates Lifting Equipment in Accordance with Safety Principles

The aroma of grilled fish, roasted kenari nuts, and yellow fish broth fills the settlement areas of Kawasi and Soligi villages on Obi Island. In simple kitchens, local women turn seafood and Obi's signature staples into flavorful dishes. Each dish also carries a story about regional identity.
That atmosphere came alive at the Cooking Festival 2026, themed "Women Create, Cuisine Goes Global: Creations of Signature Obi Dishes and Snacks (Kue)." Six women's groups from Kawasi and 10 from Soligi competed with creativity to present regional specialties. The menu ranged from papeda (sago porridge), ikan kuah kuning (fish in yellow broth), and kasbi santan (cassava in coconut milk) to gohu ikan (a raw fish dish). Snacks (kue) made from sago and kenari nuts were also on the table.

More than a competition, the event gave women a space to develop their creativity. It also helped them see the potential in what is close to their daily lives. Fish, sago, cassava, spices, and kenari nuts are not only part of culinary tradition. They can also be developed into products with economic value.
Deputy Department Head of Technical Support Amirudin of Harita Nickel, who also served as a judge, said community development needs to go hand in hand with the company's growth. According to Amirudin, local culinary riches can be one gateway to encouraging community self-reliance.
"The company's growth must go hand in hand with the community. Local wisdom, such as Obi's culinary riches and spices, can be developed into potential that brings benefits and encourages community self-reliance," said Amirudin.
Bambang Bakir, Head of the Community Welfare Section of the Kawasi Village Government, shared a similar view. Bambang hopes activities like this will not stop at being a competition. Instead, they can grow into a space to introduce the potential and local wisdom of Kawasi and Soligi villages.
"Don't let this stop at being just a contest. We hope activities like this continue to grow so that Kawasi's local potential and wisdom become better known," said Bambang.
Participants also felt the benefits directly. Tina, one of the participants who won first place, said the event helped strengthen bonds among residents.
"Before, we were just at home. Now we have an activity and can get together. The women who were not close before now know each other," said Tina.
Through local food, Obi women have found a space to create and to open up business opportunities. Obi cuisine is now more than dishes on the dining table. It is a regional treasure ready to be introduced to a wider audience.

When Kitchen Becomes a Creative Space for Obi Women

Among Harita Nickel's diverse employees, dance has become a language that brings people together. Through traditional movement, they learn about different cultures, share stories, and build a stronger sense of togetherness.
In a workplace that brings together people from across Indonesia, Sanggar (dance studio) Masigaro offers a space to explore the nation's rich cultural heritage through dance. It is not devoted to the culture of a single region. Instead, it embraces the many art forms that its members bring and share.
The dance studio was founded on 29 November 2025. The name Masigaro comes from a local language of Ternate, North Maluku, and means "to invite." That meaning reflects the group's spirit of inviting employees to learn about, study, and preserve Indonesian culture together.
The idea came from Saddam Hi Kasim, an Industrial Relations staff member at PT Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS), a Harita Nickel business unit. Saddam noticed that, amid busy work schedules, some employees had an interest in and experience with dance but no place to pursue it.
"I know that our colleagues here enjoy more than just basketball and singing. Some love to dance as well. So there is nothing wrong with the company providing a space for them to pursue their passion for traditional dance," said Saddam.
The invitation received a positive response. Today, about 20 employees have joined Sanggar Masigaro. They come not only from North Maluku but also from other parts of Indonesia, each with a different background and cultural experience.
<figure class="image align-center"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/sorotan/image1_6.jpg" alt="The Katreji dance, a blend of local culture and European influence that is part of Maluku's history." width="720" height="480">
<figcaption>The Katreji dance, a blend of local culture and European influence that is part of Maluku's history.</figcaption>
</figure>
For Syahril Abd Rauf, one of the members, this diversity is a big part of the appeal. The dance studio has connected Syahril with colleagues who share the same interest. It has also opened the door to learning about art forms from other regions.
"I am happy to meet people who share my interest in dance. Here, I can also learn about and get to know dances from other regions that I did not know before," said Syahril.
Learning takes place in two classes, one for professionals and one for beginners. Those with experience share their knowledge, while beginners have room to learn and grow together.
That togetherness was then brought to the stage. At Herophoria #6, held to celebrate the 81st anniversary of Indonesian Independence, Sanggar Masigaro performed the Katreji dance. This art form from Maluku blends local culture with European influences.
In its latest performance, the group presented the Dendang Ba Lala dance, also known as Ba Dendang Cobo Lala. This art form belongs to the Malay cultural family and has been part of life for centuries in the territory of the Bacan Sultanate. It is a traditional cultural expression typical of South Halmahera and has been protected as communal intellectual property.
The company supports the group's growth, including by providing a rehearsal space and opportunities to perform at various company events.
<figure class="image align-center"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/sorotan/image3_8.jpg" alt="The Dendang Balala dance of South Halmahera, performed at the Harita Nickel Appreciation Dinner." width="720" height="481">
<figcaption>The Dendang Balala dance of South Halmahera, performed at the Harita Nickel Appreciation Dinner.</figcaption>
</figure>
Looking ahead, Saddam hopes Sanggar Masigaro can grow into a broader platform. He envisions employees from Harita's various business units sharing their knowledge and love for regional arts.
More than a way to pursue a hobby, the dance studio has become a place where people meet. For its members, dance can be a way to learn about other cultures, strengthen fellowship, and ease the longing for their hometowns.
At Sanggar Masigaro, differences in regional origin do not remain mere differences. Through dance, employees get to know one another, share their cultures, and nurture their love for the heritage of the archipelago. That spirit also strengthens fellowship and brings to life the value of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity) and the spirit of One Harita, Looking Out for Each Other.<script src="https://cdn.n1ed.com/widgets.js?apiKey=FLMNFLMN" data-ts="1790045612802"></script>

Sanggar Masigaro: When Dance Becomes a Language That Unites

Water flows 24 hours a day as part of daily life for residents of Kawasi Village's New Settlement. From basic needs like bathing and washing to cooking, a clean water supply is available whenever it is needed.
"Water is always there for bathing, washing, and cooking. Even if I want to bathe five times a day, there is still enough," said Yunince, a resident of Kawasi Village's New Settlement.
For Tina Nomor, a small business owner in the settlement, stable access to water and electricity supports her daily activities and her business. Even though both are available around the clock, she understands the importance of using them wisely.
"Reliable water and electricity help our business a lot. Everything is provided, so it eases our daily needs. Even so, we still use only what we need," she said.
Behind this supply is a series of steps that ensure water from the Akelamo River is treated before it reaches residents' homes. Raw water is pumped through a water intake facility to the Water Purification Plant (WPP), which is operated by Harita Nickel.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/sorotan/image2_7.jpg" alt="UGM Community Service (KKN) students and a media group observed the water treatment process firsthand at the Water Purification Plant (WPP), which supplies clean water to residents of the Kawasi Village New Settlement." width="720" height="480">
<figcaption>UGM students and media observed the water treatment process firsthand at the Water Purification Plant (WPP), which supplies clean water to residents of the Kawasi Village New Settlement.</figcaption>
</figure>
At the WPP, water first goes through a clarification process in a Rectangular Clarifier. Coagulants and flocculants help settle particles out of the water. The clarified water is then held in a Reservoir Pond before undergoing disinfection with Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) to control microorganisms.
Amiruddin, Head of Technical Support at PT Obi Sinar Timur, explained that each stage is part of the water treatment process before distribution to the community and the industrial area.
"Raw water first goes through treatment and clarification before it is distributed. Its quality is also monitored regularly," he explained.
Quality is monitored from the water source, through the treatment process, to the point of distribution. Testing is carried out by an internal team and verified periodically through an accredited external laboratory.
To meet the needs of residents in Kawasi Village's New Settlement, the WPP supplies about 42,000 cubic meters of clean water each month. The same facility also supports the industrial area's water needs, with average use of about 1.75 million cubic meters per month.
Water management does not stop at treatment and distribution. Resource efficiency is also part of the system, through the reuse of process water in operational activities.
<figure class="image align-center"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/sorotan/image3_9.jpg" alt="Clean water processed from the Akelamo River flows 24 hours a day to residents' homes in the Kawasi Village New Settlement." width="720" height="421">
<figcaption>Clean water processed from the Akelamo River flows 24 hours a day to residents' homes in the Kawasi Village New Settlement.</figcaption>
</figure>
Clean water service is also provided to residents who still live in Kawasi Village's Old Settlement. Water quality in that distribution network is monitored regularly through internal testing and verified periodically by an accredited external laboratory.
For residents, the benefit feels simple: water is available when needed. Behind that flow, however, is a treatment and monitoring process that runs every day. From the Akelamo River, water passes through a series of stages before it finally flows into the homes of Kawasi residents.
This effort is part of Harita Nickel's support for expanding community access to adequate drinking water and sanitation. It also encourages the efficient and sustainable management of water resources on Obi Island.

From the Akelamo River, Clean Water Flows for Kawasi Residents

Successful post-mining land reclamation depends on more than the planting process. It begins with selecting the right plant species, matched to the characteristics of the land.
This was among the key messages from Dr. Ir. Irdika Mansur, a researcher and expert in post-mining land reclamation at Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). He shared it during a sharing session with Harita Nickel's reclamation team at the Harita Nickel Head Office in Jakarta on Friday, 28 August. The team in Jakarta attended in person, while the team at the Obi site joined online.
In his presentation, Irdika explained that demands on reclamation continue to grow. One example is the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Decree No. 344 of 2025, which sets technical guidelines for reclamation. It includes raising the canopy cover standard to 90% from the previous 80%.
According to Irdika, reaching this target must be planned from the start. Companies need to choose plant species based on post-mining land conditions. This allows vegetation to grow and canopy cover to form optimally.
"Choosing the right tree species is important. Select species that suit the land and the needs of post-mining nickel areas," Irdika explained.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/Lingkungan/photo_2026-09-21%2010.55.22_1.jpeg" alt="In his presentation, Dr Irdika Mansur explained the considerations behind the choice of plant species." width="720" height="480">
<figcaption>In his presentation, Dr Irdika Mansur explained the considerations behind the choice of plant species.</figcaption>
</figure>
Fast-growing species such as jabon merah (Neolamarckia macrophylla), binuang (Octomeles sumatrana), cemara (Casuarina spp.), and leda (Eucalyptus deglupta) are good options. Local species such as nyamplung (Calophyllum inophyllum), biti (Vitex cofassus), sungkai (Peronema canescens), kenari (Canarium spp.), and gosale (Syzygium malaccense) can also be developed, depending on land conditions.
Irdika also encouraged the use of Multi-Purpose Tree Species (MPTS). These species support reclamation and also bring economic benefits to local communities. Examples to consider include nutmeg, jackfruit, cempedak, and candlenut.
To find the most suitable species, evaluating the reclamation area is an important step. The evaluation helps the company identify which trees grow well. It also shows which trees have canopy characteristics that support ground cover.
The results can then guide which plants to prioritize in seedling production. They can also inform updates to the reclamation technical guidelines or SOPs. These adjustments are made regularly so that reclamation practices stay relevant to field evaluation results and new knowledge.
During the session, Irdika also commended several reclamation initiatives that Harita Nickel has carried out. One is the use of sediment ponds to support reclamation activities.
"Generally, sediment ponds are built solely to control sedimentation. At Harita, the pond is designed so that its sediment can be harvested and reused as topsoil. In my opinion, this is very smart," said Irdika.
The knowledge-sharing session continued with a discussion and Q&amp;A, with participants joining from Jakarta and the Obi site. Topics included plant choices such as coconut and bamboo, the use of compost, and the management of growing media in reclamation areas.
Through this activity, Harita Nickel continues to strengthen reclamation practices grounded in knowledge and field evaluation. Collaboration with experts and academics is part of the company's effort to ensure that its reclamation strategy evolves in line with science and applicable regulations.

Reclamation Success Starts with the Right Plant Choice

The work Harita Nickel employees do on Obi Island reaches beyond our operational areas. When connected to the needs of local communities and regional development, that work can create value well beyond the workplace.
That connection was at the heart of the Harita Nickel–North Maluku Provincial Government Synergy Meeting held in Sofifi on Thursday, 27 August 2026. The meeting strengthened collaboration across a range of areas, including infrastructure, economic empowerment, education, environmental initiatives, fisheries, and skills development for young people.
North Maluku Governor Sherly Tjoanda welcomed the partnership between Harita Nickel and the provincial government, which has been built since 2010, including the company’s contribution to creating employment opportunities and delivering benefits for local communities.
“Harita Nickel is a strategic partner for North Maluku Province. We appreciate the strong cooperation that has created many employment opportunities in North Maluku. Today, we also marked the inauguration of several projects and received various CSR contributions that will provide significant benefits,” said Sherly.
The Governor’s appreciation reflects how collaboration becomes meaningful when it translates into tangible benefits for communities.

<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">Opening Doors, Creating Opportunities</h2>
One example was the symbolic inauguration of four bridges built in collaboration with local communities: the Dodoku Horikiwo Suspension Bridge in Bobo Village, along with the Rijang Bridge, Dial Bridge, and Merah Putih Sungai Doko Bridge in Gambaru Village. These infrastructure projects are expected to improve connectivity and support community activities.
In coastal communities, the Soligi fishermen’s group received a 10 GT fish carrier, built with the involvement of local fishermen and workers.
“All Soligi fishermen have an equal right to use the vessel to help increase their family incomes,” said Ibrahim, a representative of the Soligi fishermen’s group.
Collaboration is also creating opportunities for young people to build their skills and pursue new opportunities. Through the PELITA Programme, participants from Batches IV and V graduated after completing their training. Among them was Sri Ayuni Zakaria, a young woman from Soligi who completed Mandarin language training and is now undertaking an internship at Harita Nickel.
“I hope the PELITA Programme will continue and create even more opportunities for young people in Obi to grow and develop,” said Sri.
For Harita Nickel, investing in people is an important part of community empowerment. Harita Nickel President Director Roy Arman Arfandy said the company aims to create more opportunities for young people in communities around its operations to build their capabilities and play a role in the region’s future.

The collaboration also includes the opening of Harita Nickel-supported MSME outlets at the North Maluku Governor’s Office, the handover of two waste collection trucks for Ternate and South Halmahera, and a partnership with Khairun University covering education, social development, community engagement, and environmental initiatives.
These initiatives demonstrate that meaningful impact does not come from one party alone. It grows when companies, governments, communities, educational institutions, and other stakeholders work together.
Behind every collaboration are Insan Harita, each playing their respective roles. Ultimately, our contribution to North Maluku also begins with doing our work well, every day.
From Obi, our work connects to something bigger: opening opportunities, creating value, and helping shape a better future for North Maluku.

From Obi to North Maluku: Collaboration That Creates Impact

Amid the busyness of working on Obi Island, Independence is celebrated in many ways. Beyond the flag-raising ceremonies, it comes alive through laughter, creativity, and shared moments that bring Harita employees closer together.
The celebrations for the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia began even before August, with a variety of competitions across our business units. More than simply adding to the festivities, these activities allowed Harita employees to express their creativity, connect with colleagues, and take a break from their daily routines.
The celebrations continued with flag-raising ceremonies held across each business unit. In a solemn atmosphere, Harita employees were reminded that today’s field of contribution is the workplace: from mines and processing plants to ports, workshops, and offices.
We honour Independence through meaningful work and our best efforts. From Obi, every role contributes to a larger endeavour to create value and support Indonesia’s progress. This spirit is reflected in #CaranyaHarita: putting safety first, caring for the environment, and looking out for one another as Satu Harita.

<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">When Togetherness Becomes Our Strength</h2>
On the evening of 17 August, the grounds of the PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) office became a gathering place for a gala dinner themed “Together, Building Synergy for a Stronger Harita”. Employees came together with management and colleagues from other business units, sharing a variety of dishes and conversations in a relaxed setting.
“Independence celebrations are a meaningful opportunity to strengthen our sense of togetherness. We come from different backgrounds and have different roles, but we are all part of one Harita family,” said Younsel Evand Roos, Harita Nickel Operations Director.
For Agung Aribowo, Deputy Head of Technical Support at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), this sense of family is also reflected in everyday life.
“We come from different parts of the country, but here in Obi, we are a family. As part of that family, every Insan Harita cares for one another and is ready to help when a colleague needs support,” he said.
Mustafa Ghafur, GA Transport at PT HJF, who has worked in Obi for more than five years, has experienced this sense of togetherness first-hand.
“It is great to meet colleagues from different ethnic and regional backgrounds. At first, we did not know each other. Over time, we worked together and became like one family,” said Mustafa.
The spirit of self-expression was also evident at Herophoria at PT HJF, which provided a stage for Harita employees to showcase their talents, from traditional dance performances by Sanggar Masigaro to music and DJ performances.
Meanwhile, Sunset Merdeka at the PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) Living Quarter offered a more relaxed setting, with local food, traditional games, and a laid-back atmosphere reminiscent of home.
The celebrations were closed with a showcase of Indonesia’s cultural diversity. At HPL, Nusantara Fest featured a fashion show highlighting traditional attire from across the country. At TBP, Karnaval Budaya returned for its fifth edition.

<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">Celebrating independence from Obi Island to Jakarta</h2>
The spirit of togetherness in celebrating the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s independence was not felt only on Obi Island. A series of celebrations was also held at Harita Nickel’s Head Office (HO) in Jakarta, featuring various competitions and a closing ceremony involving Harita staff across all business units and departments.
In Jakarta, the 81st Independence Day activities began with competitions running from early July through the end of August 2026. There were various competitions, from sports tournaments such as badminton, tennis, chess, and a fun run, to writing and content-creation competitions, fun games, and a Mobile Legends tournament. The series of activities concluded with a closing event on Friday, August 21, 2026, featuring the announcement of winners and the awarding of prizes.
This Independence Day festival is one way for Harita staff to strengthen their sense of togetherness outside of their daily work routines. The participants’ enthusiasm was evident in every match, which not only served as a platform for competition but also fostered sportsmanship, teamwork and camaraderie amongst employees, reinforcing the spirit of “One Harita, Looking Out for One Another”.
"I was really glad to take part in this year's Independence Day celebration. Besides being fun, we can take part in the competitions, the atmosphere was lively and full of togetherness. Getting to meet and gather with friends from other departments and business units was also a pleasure," shared Rendy Sipahutar, Harita Nickel Logistics Manager, who took part in the 81st Independence Day celebration at HO Jakarta.

Together, these activities show that Independence celebrations are about more than festivities. Amid their daily responsibilities, Insan Harita have a space to express their creativity.
Ultimately, togetherness grows through simple things: greeting one another, sharing stories, and offering help when needed. In a place that brings together people from diverse backgrounds, this spirit of care can make life far from home feel a little closer.
“Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga” comes to life when our differences become a source of strength and everyone feels part of the same family. This is one of the ways we honour Independence: by doing our work well, taking pride in what we create, and making sure no colleague has to walk alone.
