Harita Nickel organized its Ramadan Safari 1447 H in Obi Island, South Halmahera, reaching hundreds of residents through iftar meal distribution, support for orphans, and Eid gift packages.
Held from March 9–14, 2026, the initiative covered villages in the company’s surrounding operational areas as part of efforts to expand social impact while strengthening engagement with local communities.
Harita Nickel’s Community Relations Manager, Riyadi Supriyadi, said the Ramadan Safari serves as a platform for the company to connect more closely with the community. “Through this Ramadan Safari, we aim to share and strengthen our bond with the community, especially orphans and those in need,” he said.

The program began with Ramadan on the Road on March 9–10, 2026, in collaboration with youth groups across five villages in Obi District: Jikotamo, Buton, Laiwui, Akegula, and Baru. Iftar meals were distributed at key community activity points, creating a sense of togetherness while supporting residents on their way home before breaking their fast.
The activities continued with communal iftar gatherings and support for orphans in several villages. At Al-Ikhlas Mosque in Akegula Village, 260 orphans received assistance in the presence of local government representatives, community leaders, and company representatives. In Soligi Village, a similar event was held at Al Baqi Mosque, where 158 orphans received support.
Soligi Village Secretary Wahyudin Hamani expressed appreciation for the initiative. “This support motivates the children to keep learning and pursuing their aspirations,” he said.
Overall, this year’s Ramadan Safari reached three main villages: Akegula, Soligi, and Kawasi, with a total of 463 orphans receiving assistance. In addition, more than 1,100 Eid gift packages were distributed to communities around the operational areas.

Harita Nickel Strengthens Community Ties in Mining Areas through Ramadan Safari

Workplace safety management remains a key priority in the mining industry. The complexity of operational activities requires companies to establish strong risk control systems and ensure they are implemented consistently in the field. For this reason, experiences in developing safety systems are often shared among industry players as part of collective learning.
This topic was among those discussed during a capacity-building event organized by the North Maluku chapter of the Indonesian Mining Professionals Association (PERHAPI) on February 12, 2026, in Ternate. The forum, themed “Implementation of Good Mining Practice (GMP) in Occupational Health and Safety and Operational Safety,” was attended by representatives from the regional Office of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) as well as several mining companies operating in North Maluku.
At the event, Supriyanto Suwarno, Vice President of OHS &amp; Management System at Harita Nickel, presented how the company develops and implements its Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) system. According to him, safety management at Harita Nickel is built on an integrated, risk-based approach, ensuring that a clear risk control framework supports every operational activity.
“The OHS approach at Harita Nickel is developed progressively. It begins with a strong management system foundation and is then reinforced through operational implementation. The ultimate goal is to foster a sustainable safety culture across all levels of the organization,” Supriyanto explained.
The foundation begins with strengthening the OHS management system as the basis for risk control. At Harita Nickel, this framework is integrated into the Harita Nickel Integrated Management System, which brings together corporate management standards, internal guidelines, and compliance with applicable regulations.
Once the management system is established, the next focus is ensuring its implementation at the operational level. The company translates safety principles into daily work practices through consistent enforcement of safety rules, continuous development of workforce competencies, and active involvement of all parties engaged in operational activities.
Safety enforcement is carried out through measurable safety performance indicators and a reward-and-consequence mechanism designed to maintain work discipline. At the same time, the company strengthens workforce capability by developing the OHS function within the organization, including the management of safety aspects among contractor partners.
The participation of all stakeholders is also essential in maintaining consistent safety practices. Through various engagement programs, individuals are encouraged to recognize their role in creating a safe working environment for themselves and for their colleagues.
According to Supriyanto, the success of OHS implementation ultimately depends on collective awareness in the workplace.
“When safety awareness becomes part of daily work habits, people become more attentive to potential risks and are more likely to take preventive action at an early stage,” he said.
Through this forum, Harita Nickel shared its experience in managing the company’s safety system. Such exchanges of practices are expected to broaden the perspective of mining industry players in North Maluku and support stronger OHS implementation across their respective workplaces.

Harita Nickel Shares Occupational Safety System Practices at PERHAPI North Maluku Forum

Participants of the Youth Skills and Competency Development Program (PELITA) Batch IV undertook both theoretical and practical examinations for the Overhead Crane Operator License (SIO) certification on March 11, 2026. This stage ensures that participants’ technical competencies and understanding of occupational safety meet the operational standards of the high-risk nickel industry.
A total of 40 youths from various villages in South Halmahera Regency, particularly Obi Island, took part in the evaluation after completing an intensive three-month training program. The examinations were supervised by the South Halmahera Regency Manpower Office to ensure that the certification process was conducted in accordance with prevailing regulations.
The Head of the South Halmahera Regency Manpower and Transmigration Office (Disnakertrans), Daud Djubedi, representing the regional government, expressed appreciation and support for the consistent implementation of this vocational program.
“We see this program as providing real access for local youth to gain hands-on experience and technical skills that are relevant to industry needs,” he stated.
During the practical examination, participants were assessed on their ability to operate an overhead crane, including hoisting techniques, cross and long travel movements, as well as risk identification. Ahmad S. Adam, a participant from Bacan, stated that the training had broadened his understanding of safety standards and operational procedures for heavy equipment.
“This training has made us more prepared and confident to work professionally as operators,” he said.
Prior to joining the program, Ahmad worked as a crew member in the furnace area at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel, one of Harita Nickel’s business units. He hopes that the skills gained from the training will open up better job opportunities in the future as an overhead crane operator within the company.
Agung Aribowo, Deputy Department Head of Technical Support at Harita Nickel, emphasized that developing local workforce competencies is a key element in supporting the increasingly complex nickel downstream industry.
“The nickel downstream industry upholds high technical and safety standards. Therefore, competency development must be carried out systematically and measurably. Programs like PELITA ensure that we are not only building industrial facilities, but also strengthening human capacity,” said Agung.
He added that downstreaming is not merely about increasing the added value of minerals, but also about transforming the industrial ecosystem, which requires a skilled workforce with strong safety discipline.
Since its launch in 2023, PELITA has been designed based on operational needs to ensure that participants possess technical readiness aligned with production processes in the nickel industrial area. Through this SIO certification, participants are expected to contribute as competent workers while strengthening the role of local human resources within the downstream industry value chain.

Harita Nickel Assesses Local Operator Competency, Prepares Skilled Workforce for the Downstream Industry

As the time for iftar approached, a warm atmosphere could be felt across Harita Nickel’s various workplaces. Employees gathered together, some still wearing their work uniforms after completing field activities. Amid the meaningful spirit of Ramadan, the moment of togetherness became part of Ramadan Safari 2026, a series of gatherings between management and employees held across Harita Nickel’s business units at the Obi site as well as its representative offices in Labuha and Ternate.
More than simply a communal iftar, the Ramadan Safari serves as a platform for dialogue between management and employees. This year’s event carries the theme “One Harita, Looking Out for Each Other: Strengthening Teamwork, Facing Challenges.” The theme reflects the spirit of unity among Harita employees as they navigate the evolving dynamics of the industry.
<img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Safari%20Ramadaan%202026_HJF.jpg" alt="Safari Ramadhan Obi Site" width="1000" height="666">
In his remarks, Topan Prasetyo, business controller of Harita Nickel, began by expressing appreciation for the contributions of all Harita employees throughout 2025. Representing the company’s board of directors, he thanked employees for their dedication in helping the company overcome various challenges.
“Through our collective efforts, we have not only managed to endure, but also achieved several strategic milestones,” he said.
Among the company’s key achievements, he noted the optimization of a 40-megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power plant, progress toward obtaining certification under the Responsible Minerals Initiative–Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMI RMAP), improvements in operational efficiency and the expansion of social programs benefiting communities surrounding the mining area.
However, Topan emphasized that the challenges ahead remain significant. The global nickel industry continues to evolve rapidly, influenced by fluctuations in commodity prices, advances in electric vehicle (EV) battery technology and rising demands for higher compliance standards.
<img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Safari%20Ramadan%202026_KPT.jpg" alt="Ramadhan Safari Ternate Representative Office" width="1000" height="667">
“We cannot afford to be complacent. We must continue working harder to maintain the company’s competitiveness,” he said.
In response to these developments, management has designated 2026 as a year of collaboration, aimed at strengthening teamwork to address the challenges ahead. All Harita employees are expected to enhance operational resilience while improving efficiency. Topan also reminded employees of the importance of the company’s core values of Teamwork and Accountability as the foundation for every work process across all business units.
For employees, the Ramadan Safari provides an opportunity to hear directly from management while strengthening a sense of solidarity. Hardiana, an employee of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), a Harita Nickel business unit specializing in ferronickel smelting, said she was pleased to take part in the event.
“Through this event, we can better understand the company’s conditions and challenges firsthand. The atmosphere also feels more personal because it takes place during Ramadan,” she said.
A similar sentiment was expressed by Rifaldi Duwila of Harita Nickel’s Labuha representative office. Known by his nickname Atta, he said the Ramadan Safari serves as a bridge for employees at representative offices to stay connected with operational developments at the site.
“Through the Ramadan Safari, we receive direct updates on operational developments. It makes us feel closer to colleagues working at the site,” he said.
<img class="n1ed--selected" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Safari%20Ramadaan%202026_KPL_1.jpg" alt="Photo Together Iftar Together" width="1000" height="667">
As the call to the Maghrib prayer echoed, management and employees broke their fast together. The warm conversations that followed reflected the spirit of togetherness that forms an important part of Harita Nickel’s workplace culture.
Amid the increasingly dynamic challenges facing the industry, the Ramadan Safari serves as a reminder that the company’s greatest strength lies in the collaboration and unity of its people. The spirit of One Harita continues to drive everyone forward in facing challenges with a shared purpose.

Ramadan Safari 2026: Strengthening Teamwork to Face Future Challenges

OBI ISLAND, South Halmahera – For decades, crossing the Akelamo River has been a challenge for residents of Kawasi and Soligi villages in South Halmahera Regency, especially during strong currents or adverse weather. Today, that land isolation has officially ended with the operation of the Akelamo River Bridge, which has been open since early 2025.
As the largest and longest river on Obi Island, and the only outlet for water from Lake Karo, the Akelamo River plays a central yet challenging role in the region. In the past, the distribution of agricultural produce between Kawasi and Soligi relied on a manually operated pontoon bridge (a simple floating dock) with limited capacity.
The 105-meter-long and 20-meter-wide bridge was built with support from Harita Nickel. This infrastructure not only shortens travel time but is also expected to become a new economic lifeline for communities along the western and southern coasts of Obi Island.
Soligi Village Head, Madaisi La Siriali, recalled how difficult mobility used to be before the bridge existed, particularly for farmers and traders transporting agricultural products. “In the past, residents had to adjust to river currents and weather conditions when crossing. Now the access is safer, faster, and more efficient. It also makes it much easier for residents to reach healthcare and education services,” said Madaisi.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/mceu_4976865031772955165766.jpg" alt="Akelamo River" width="1080">
<figcaption>

A similar positive impact has been felt by residents of Kawasi Village. Kawasi Village Head, Arifin Saroa, emphasized the importance of the bridge in strengthening economic collaboration between the two villages. “Let’s organize things well so we can sell together. Women traders from Soligi and Kawasi can now work together because land access is finally open,” he said.
The significant infrastructure improvement has also received positive recognition from Telapak Association. Mohammad Djufryhard, Social Assessor of Telapak Association, validated the substantial benefits of the infrastructure built by Harita Nickel.
He shared his experience visiting Obi in 2023, when he still had to cross the river using a pontoon bridge. However, when he returned in 2025, he witnessed firsthand how the new bridge had improved inter-village connectivity and greatly supported the distribution of agricultural and fisheries products.
“For us, this is an added value provided by the company, particularly in infrastructure development that continues to improve each year,” said Djufryhard.

Opening Access Between Soligi and Kawasi, Akelamo Bridge Becomes New Economic Lifeline for Obi’s Coastal Communities

Swift and precise emergency responses are never a coincidence; they are the result of rigorously tested systems. To strengthen the reliability of its emergency preparedness, Harita Nickel, through its business units PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) and PT Dharma Cipta Mulia (DCM), recently rolled out comprehensive integrated rescue and medical simulations.
Conducted separately by the two units, these drills served as a crucial stress test for cross-departmental collaboration when facing real-world crises on the ground.
Testing the Integrated Medical System in a Mass Poisoning Scenario
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/mceu_24590042011772953097118.jpg" width="1080" height="720">
<figcaption>Medical personnel examine a worker during a food poisoning response simulation at the company’s healthcare facility.</figcaption>
</figure>
At PT HJF, the drill centered on a medical emergency scenario involving mass food poisoning at the employee mess hall. Initial reports to the Command Center indicated that several employees were experiencing severe nausea, dizziness, and stomach cramps just one hour after lunch.
To test the system’s capacity on a large scale, the simulation involved 15 "victims." Ten were categorized with mild to moderate symptoms (green and yellow triage), while five were in severe condition (red triage). The severe cases were simulated to have experienced repeated vomiting and diarrhea up to ten times—a critical condition that, in reality, threatens to cause severe dehydration and rapid electrolyte imbalance.
Strict triage implementation was key to the crisis response. Red-category patients were immediately evacuated to the Emergency Room (ER) for intensive care, while the others received outpatient treatment.
PT HJF Medical &amp; Paramedic Supervisor, Sugianto, explained that the food poisoning drill aimed to comprehensively evaluate system readiness and identify operational bottlenecks when handling large-scale cases that demand cross-departmental teamwork.
Echoing the urgency, Harita Nickel Site Medical Doctor, dr. Randy Palittin Tonapa, emphasized the fatal risks of massive bodily fluid loss. "Symptoms of vomiting more than three times accompanied by severe stomach cramps must be treated immediately to prevent drops in blood pressure and even loss of consciousness," dr. Randy warned.
Adhering to the principle that "time saving is life saving," he urged employees not to panic during an emergency. Instead, they are advised to contact the Command Center immediately so the integrated medical team can be dispatched to the scene without delay.
Evaluating Operational Rescue Procedures
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/mceu_66035276821772953114904.jpg" width="1080" height="720">
<figcaption>Harita Nickel’s emergency response team conducts a first-aid simulation for a worker during an emergency response drill in the operational area.</figcaption>
</figure>
Emergency response capabilities were also put to the test at PT DCM through an occupational accident drill in the stone crusher area. The team's agility was measured in a scenario where an employee was trapped in a belt conveyor after the machine suddenly turned on during maintenance.
Upon receiving the emergency report, the Command Center immediately orchestrated the deployment of a joint response team—consisting of Fire and Emergency Services (FES), Clinic, Security, and Safety personnel—to conduct rapid extraction operations and administer first aid.
PT DCM OHS Superintendent, Priyo Adi Pamungkas, explained that the simulation serves as both an educational and evaluative tool to refine evacuation procedures, triage protocols, and identify operational gaps. "The primary goal is to evaluate collaboration among our response teams before we face actual emergencies in the field," he emphasized.
The successful execution of these two drills demonstrates that Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) at Harita Nickel is a dynamic, constantly evolving system. Through continuous procedure evaluations and integrated training, the company ensures that all emergency response elements remain perpetually on standby to protect its most valuable asset: its employees.

Bolstering Emergency Readiness: Harita Nickel Conducts Integrated Rescue and Medical Drills

The holy month of Ramadan does not diminish Harita Nickel’s steadfast commitment to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) across its operations. The spirit of worship aligns seamlessly with the principles of working safely and productively. However, changes in sleep patterns and dietary habits require heightened vigilance against fatigue, a primary trigger for safety incidents.
Embodying the spirit of "One Harita, Looking Out for Each Other" (Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga), safety is an absolute, shared responsibility. Harita Nickel has proactively implemented an integrated mitigation strategy to ensure every worker remains fit and safe while observing their fast.
&nbsp;
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/Lingkungan/Cegah%20Fatigue%201.jpg" alt="Health Check Employee" width="898" height="600">
<figcaption>The OHS team conducted focus checks and worker condition assessments as part of the 'Fit to Work' procedure before commencing operational activities.</figcaption>
</figure>
&nbsp;
Beware of the Hidden Danger of Microsleep
Harita Nickel’s Health Management Lead Doctor, Dr. Van Satrio Wibowo, explained that changes to the body's circadian rhythm during the fasting month must be managed with strict discipline.
"A decline in the quality and quantity of sleep carries a high risk of triggering microsleep—a brief, involuntary episode of sleep that can be fatal, particularly for heavy equipment operators. The body actually sends warning signs when fatigue sets in, such as severe drowsiness, burning eyes, frequent yawning, loss of focus, and delayed reaction times," Dr. Van elaborated.
To prevent this, Dr. Van recommends three core pillars for workers:
<ul>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Sleep Management: Ensure 6–8 hours of sleep. Avoid staying up late, and for night shift workers, maximize daytime sleep before reporting for duty.
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Proper Nutrition: Consume complex carbohydrates (brown rice or whole wheat bread), protein, vegetables, and fruits during sahur (pre-dawn meal). Avoid greasy foods and limit caffeine intake at night to maintain sleep quality.
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
The 2-4-2 Hydration Pattern: Prevent dehydration by following the rule of drinking 2 glasses of water at iftar (breaking the fast), 4 glasses at night, and 2 glasses during sahur.
</li>
</ul>
"If a worker experiences symptoms of fatigue while on duty, our OHS procedures are crystal clear: immediately stop the unit in a safe location, rest, and report to the supervisor," he stressed.
&nbsp;
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/Lingkungan/Cegah%20Fatigue%202.jpg" alt="Vital Sign Check" width="898" height="600">
<figcaption>The medical team is conducting vital sign checks and complete blood tests on employees.</figcaption>
</figure>
&nbsp;
Strict Adherence to 'Fit to Work' Protocols
These medical recommendations are translated into a solid line of defense in the field. OHS Superintendent at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, Syarif Hadi Fatullah, emphasized that fatigue mitigation is a mandatory procedure before operational activities commence.
"There is no compromise when it comes to safety standards. As a proactive mitigation measure, we routinely conduct fatigue checks in the field to verify the Fit to Work status of every individual," Syarif stated.
Before starting a shift, every worker is required to complete a self-assessment, which evaluates whether they have had enough sleep, checks their physical condition (ensuring they are free from dizziness or weakness), and assesses their mental readiness to focus on the job.
"A single second of negligence can have a massive impact on lives and operational continuity. If you don't feel fit, never force yourself; report immediately to your supervisor or the medical team. The fast continues, and operations remain safe. Let's protect ourselves and our team so everyone makes it home safely," he urged.
The strict implementation of these safety systems during Ramadan proves that operations and worker protection can go hand-in-hand. For Harita Nickel, safety is a fundamental value, ensuring that every worker is protected and can return home safely to their families.

Harita Nickel’s Multi-Layered Approach to Prevent Worker Fatigue During Ramadan

The commemoration of the 2026 National OHS (K3) Month at PT Megah Surya Pertiwi was marked by order and discipline. Every stage of the event demonstrated that safety governance is not merely about policies and procedures, but a reality present in daily practice.
Amidst the ceremonial ranks, one moment captured the evolving dynamic of the organization. For the first time, the ceremony commander for the OHS Month commemoration at PT MSP was a woman. Ummu Iqrima Alqibtia led the proceedings with calm precision, bringing operational discipline into the organization’s most visible arena.
Ummu’s presence underscores a vital point: inclusivity plays a tangible role in responsible operations. In functions demanding high precision, regulatory compliance, and uncompromising consistency, such as Hazardous and Toxic Waste (LB3) management, diverse perspectives sharpen the organization’s ability to read risks and maintain vigilance.
In her daily life, Ummu serves as a Hazardous Waste Foreman. Her role exists in a territory rarely seen but absolutely critical. Every procedure executed correctly means risks are contained, impacts are minimized, and safety is preserved, a silent responsibility that supports the entire system.
Ummu’s appointment as the ceremony commander stemmed from a simple and open internal process. When the position opened, she stepped forward, earning the trust of her team.
"It was on her own initiative, and the team agreed," noted Rivai Zamzam, Environmental Supervisor.
For Ummu, leading the ceremony was not just about ceremonial symbolism. She views leadership as the awareness that every detail carries consequences for collective safety—much like the small, critical decisions she safeguards every day in her work area.
This attitude was forged through a long journey. Her education at the Forestry Vocational School in Makassar instilled field discipline and decisiveness in execution. This experience was further fortified by her Forestry studies at Khairun University, Ternate, and the Independent Student Exchange program at ITS Surabaya, focusing on Environmental Engineering.
"Environmental management is an interconnected system. If one part is loose, it affects everything," she explained.
This principle is the foundation of Ummu’s work ethic. Her greatest challenge isn't just ensuring procedural compliance, but building the awareness that hazardous waste management is a collective responsibility that determines long-term operational resilience. Through a hands-on approach, including oil spill drill simulations, she emphasizes shared readiness for when risks become reality.
At this intersection, Ummu’s role in the hazardous waste warehouse and on the ceremonial podium converge. Both speak to the same values: responsibility, vigilance, and the consistency to uphold standards. True leadership is shaped not only by the spotlight but by the willingness to shoulder the silent responsibilities that keep the system running, day after day.

From Hazardous Waste Management to the Ceremonial Podium: The Leadership Journey of Ummu Iqrima Alqibtia

Nickel is one of the most important minerals used across various industries, ranging from stainless steel production to electric vehicle (EV) battery components. Before it can be widely utilized, nickel must undergo complex processing to extract this high-value metal from its ore.
In this article, we will explore how nickel is processed using two main technologies: RKEF (Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace) and HPAL (High Pressure Acid Leaching). Each method has a different approach, produces different end products, and operates in different processing facilities, namely smelters and refineries.
<h2 dir="ltr">Understanding Processing Facilities: Smelter vs. Refinery</h2>
Before discussing the technologies, there are two key terms in nickel processing that must be understood:
<h3 dir="ltr">1. Smelter</h3>
A smelter is a mineral processing facility that uses a pyrometallurgical approach, meaning it relies on high-temperature heating and melting processes. Its main objective is to produce molten metal products such as Nickel Pig Iron (NPI) or Ferronickel (FeNi).
Key characteristics of a smelter:
<ul>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Uses extremely high temperatures (up to &gt;1,300°C)
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Produces alloyed metals (ferroalloys)
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Commonly serves the stainless steel industry
</li>
</ul>
<h3 dir="ltr">2. Refinery</h3>
A refinery is a mineral processing facility that uses a hydrometallurgical approach, meaning it utilizes water-based solutions as the primary medium to extract and purify metals. The final products are typically high-purity nickel chemical compounds such as Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) or Nickel Sulfate (NiSO₄).
Key characteristics of a refinery:
<ul>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Uses acid, pressure, and controlled temperatures
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Does not produce molten metal
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Commonly serves the battery and chemical industries
</li>
</ul>
<h2 dir="ltr">RKEF Technology: Processing Nickel Ore in a Smelter</h2>
<h3 dir="ltr">What is RKEF?</h3>
RKEF (Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace) is one of the primary methods used in smelters to process laterite nickel ore, particularly saprolite ore, which contains relatively high nickel content. This method falls under pyrometallurgy, meaning it heavily depends on intense heat to transform raw ore into metal products.
<h3 dir="ltr">Main Stages of the RKEF Process</h3>
The processing stages inside a smelter include:
<ol>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Ore Separation
</li>
</ol>
Nickel ore larger than 2 cm is separated at the initial stage.
<ol>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Drying
</li>
</ol>
The ore is dried in a rotary dryer at temperatures between 200–300°C. This reduces its moisture content from around 40% to approximately 20%.
<ol start="3">
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Calcination
</li>
</ol>
The ore is further heated in a rotary kiln at temperatures of 700–750°C to remove unwanted elements.
<ol start="4">
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Smelting
</li>
</ol>
The heated ore is then melted in an electric furnace at around 1,600°C to separate ferronickel from impurities.
<ol start="5">
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Molding
</li>
</ol>
The molten ferronickel is cast into ingots, ready to be shipped to the steel industry.
&nbsp;
The final products of this process are typically ferroalloys such as Ferronickel (FeNi) or Nickel Pig Iron (NPI), which are used as raw materials in metallurgical industries, particularly stainless steel production.
Smelters using RKEF technology generally operate multiple large production lines continuously to achieve stable and high annual output. Several large-scale RKEF facilities in Indonesia produce thousands of tons of FeNi annually.

<h2 dir="ltr">HPAL Technology: Processing Nickel Ore in a Refinery</h2>
<h3 dir="ltr">What is HPAL?</h3>
Unlike RKEF, HPAL (High Pressure Acid Leaching) uses an entirely different approach and operates in a refinery. HPAL is a hydrometallurgical method designed to process limonite-type laterite nickel ore, which typically has lower nickel content but contains valuable elements such as cobalt.
<h3 dir="ltr">Main Stages of the HPAL Process</h3>
Processing in a refinery involves the following stages:
<ol>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Ore Washing
</li>
</ol>
Limonite nickel ore is washed and separated from rocks and impurities, forming a slurry.
<ol start="2">
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Thickening Process
</li>
</ol>
The slurry is thickened until its solid content reaches approximately 45%.
<ol start="3">
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Leaching
</li>
</ol>
The slurry is pumped through pipelines into high-pressure vessels called autoclaves. Inside the autoclave, it is treated with concentrated sulfuric acid at temperatures up to 250°C and pressures of around 50 bar—comparable to the pressure found at a depth of 500 meters underwater. Agitators inside the autoclave continuously mix the material, allowing nickel to dissolve into the acid while other materials settle as residue.
<ol start="4">
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Separation
</li>
</ol>
The nickel-rich solution is separated from the slurry residue through seven Counter Current Decantation (CCD) tanks.
<ol start="5">
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Purification
</li>
</ol>
The nickel solution is further processed to produce a mixture of nickel and cobalt known as Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), after removing aluminum and iron (FeAl removal process).
MHP can be further refined into nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate. Most recently, Harita Nickel has also produced <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/tonggak-baru-hilirisasi-harita-nickel-produksi-kobalt-elektrolitik">electrolytic cobalt </a>using Electro Winning technology. These products have various applications, including raw materials for battery manufacturing, electronics, and specialty materials requiring high-purity cobalt.
HPAL technology is known for its higher operational complexity compared to RKEF, as it requires precise control of pressure, temperature, and chemical conditions. However, it enables greater value extraction from lower-grade limonite ore and supports the processing of more complex materials.
<h2 dir="ltr">Meeting Global Demand from Obi Island</h2>
RKEF and HPAL are two distinct nickel ore processing technologies in terms of process, facilities, and final products. RKEF processes saprolite ore in smelters to produce ferroalloys such as FeNi or NPI, while HPAL processes limonite ore in refineries to extract high-purity nickel chemical compounds such as MHP or NiSO₄.
A clear understanding of how these technologies work explains how similar-looking nickel ores at the mine site can result in very different products at processing facilities.
The downstream industrial model on Obi Island demonstrates how RKEF and HPAL can operate side by side within a single industrial ecosystem. Harita Nickel utilizes RKEF to process saprolite ore into ferronickel for the stainless steel industry, and HPAL to process limonite ore into MHP, nickel sulfate, cobalt sulfate, and electrolytic cobalt as raw materials for EV batteries.
This integrated approach addresses two global demands simultaneously: stainless steel demand (through RKEF) and EV battery material demand (through HPAL).
In other words, Harita Nickel does not merely extract nickel it connects Indonesia to the global supply chain of strategic industries, creating broader added value for the national economy.
