Working in the mining industry requires strong physical and mental resilience, as well as the willingness to take responsibility. This is reflected in the professional journey of Fadli Wahda, widely known as Akha. A graduate of Mining Engineering from Muhammadiyah University of Ternate, Akha demonstrates that sustainable career growth is built through consistency, dedication, and hands-on experience in the field.
Akha began his career in 2018 in Buli, East Halmahera, where he served as a safety officer. In this role, he developed discipline and adaptability while working within the demanding and dynamic environment of mining operations.
He carried this experience with him when he crossed over to Obi Island to join Harita Nickel in October 2019. At the time, the site was far from as established as it is today. As a Field Safety officer, Akha was directly involved in the early stages of construction, a phase filled with challenges.
During this period, large-scale construction activities were underway, heavy equipment operated continuously, and personnel from multiple contractors worked simultaneously. Akha’s responsibilities extended beyond administrative safety checks; he was tasked with ensuring that all personnel could perform their duties safely and return home without incident.
“The challenges at that time were substantial. We were not only implementing procedures, but also establishing a safety culture. Communicating safety requirements effectively, without causing friction, was a skill I developed through daily practice,” Akha recalled.
His performance and collaborative approach led to his promotion to Foreman in 2021. This transition marked a critical phase in his professional development, as he shifted from being a peer to assuming a leadership role. Managing former colleagues and providing direction required strong interpersonal and leadership capabilities.
“The primary challenge was mental adjustment. Previously, we worked side by side in the field; suddenly, I was responsible for giving direction. I chose an inclusive leadership approach rather than a directive one,” he explained. As a Foreman, Akha was also responsible for resolving on-site issues and ensuring effective coordination with management.
In his new role, Akha led a team of more than a dozen personnel. He maintained an active presence in the field and prioritized open communication to ensure operations ran efficiently without creating unnecessary hierarchical barriers.
This balanced leadership style, approachable yet firm, was positively recognized by management. In September 2025, Akha was appointed as OHS Monitoring Supervisor, a role with broader and more strategic responsibilities. Despite this advancement, his operational focus and field-oriented mindset remain central to his work.
Akha’s promotion received direct acknowledgment from Harita Nickel’s Safety Superintendent, Tomy Bongga. According to Tomy, Akha exemplifies leadership developed through operational experience.
“Akha demonstrates a strong capacity for adaptation. His key strength lies in translating company policies into practical guidance that is easily understood and applied by field personnel. This promotion reflects recognition of his initiative and leadership effectiveness,” Tomy stated.
For Akha, Harita Nickel represents more than a professional workplace, it is an environment that supports long-term growth. His contributions at the Obi site have resulted in tangible outcomes, including improved stability for his family in Ternate and a more structured outlook for the future. Harita Nickel has served as a platform for realizing his professional aspirations.
Despite his current supervisory position, Akha remains committed to continuous improvement. “As long as opportunities exist, there is always room to grow. The key is to keep learning, uphold integrity, and remain humble in all professional interactions,” he concluded.

Fadli Wahda: Forged by Field Challenges, Refined in Leadership

With the rapid growth of the nickel industry and the increasing global demand for green energy, responsible practices are key to ensuring that Indonesia's nickel industry can compete with global standards. Responsible mining activities not only cover exploration and mineral extraction, but also include processing and post-mining rehabilitation.
Harita Nickel's commitment to responsible practices was reaffirmed at the 2025 Career Week event organized by the Geological Engineering Student Association (HMTG) and the Indonesian Economic Geology Society (MGEI) at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).
In a panel discussion themed “Strategic Pathways of Nickel Exploration Processing in Supporting Downstream Industry and the Green Energy Transition,” Harita Nickel’s Hydrology and Geotechnical Superintendent, Ichsan Alfan, outlined the company’s responsible mining journey, which covers the entire process.
“The mining journey begins with systematic exploration. We map the geology, conduct core drilling, ensure data quality, and then build an accurate resource model. This stage is then followed by mine planning and phased mining, where ore is extracted according to technical design,” said Ichsan.
He continued that for Harita Nickel, the mining process does not stop at production. After the ore is processed, the management of processing byproducts and post-mining land rehabilitation to restore the ecosystem is also an important part of the mining cycle.
“For us, responsibility does not stop at production. After the ore is extracted, we are responsible for managing all processing byproducts and land reclamation in the post-mining area. Rehabilitation and revegetation are part of the mining cycle that has been planned since the beginning of operations to restore the natural ecosystem,” added Ichsan.
The company's responsible practices also extend to the management of processing byproducts. From the nickel ore processing carried out by the company, there are two types of processing byproducts: tailings from the processing using High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology, and nickel slag, byproducts from using Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology.
To manage tailings, Harita Nickel implements the Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF) method, which involves drying and storing them in a controlled facility to minimize potential environmental impacts. Meanwhile, slag is managed by reusing it as a construction material and soil conditioner to support post-mining land revegetation activities. The utilization and management of processing byproducts have been planned from the outset as part of the mining cycle and implemented systematically as a responsible practice.
This journey shows that responsible practices do not only occur at the production site, but are built holistically from the outset through a series of scientific, technical, and environmental decisions from the exploration stage to the final land restoration.
Through practices that include sustainable exploration, planned mining, management of processing byproducts, and post-mining rehabilitation, Harita Nickel contributes to supporting responsible national nickel downstreaming, while creating long-term value for the environment and communities around its operational areas.

The collaboration between Harita Nickel and the South Halmahera Regency Government (Halsel) in strengthening local food security has delivered positive results. The two parties held a large-scale rice harvest covering 12 hectares of paddy fields in Buton Village, Obi District, on Friday (23/1), with projections indicating a significant increase in productivity.
South Halmahera Regent Hasan Ali Bassam Kasuba, who attended and led the harvest, emphasized that this achievement disproves the long-held assumption that the Obi area is unsuitable for rice cultivation.

“What has long been associated with other regions has now been proven possible in Obi and is delivering tangible benefits. This demonstrates strong potential that contributes directly to the local economy,” Regent Bassam stated.
He stressed that synergy between the government, local communities, and the business sector is essential in providing infrastructure and farmer assistance. The regional government, he affirmed, remains committed to supporting the development of paddy farming through strengthening supporting infrastructure, providing agricultural facilities and equipment, and offering continuous assistance to farmers to improve productivity.

Sharp Increase in Productivity

Prior to the harvest, crop sampling (ubinan) was conducted by the Obi District Agricultural Extension Center (BPP) together with farmers and the Harita Nickel Community Development team. The results showed a productivity level of 8 tons per hectare.
Acting Head of the South Halmahera Agriculture Office, Suyatmi Aljogja, presented encouraging data on the yield increase. Based on information from farmers, production more than doubled compared to the previous planting season. She noted that the yield exceeded the national average, which typically stands at around 5 tons per hectare.
“The development potential remains very large, considering that Buton Village has up to 100 hectares of paddy fields that have not yet been optimally cultivated,” Suyatmi explained.
According to her, these achievements were made possible through collaboration with the company, adequate technical assistance, effective use of production inputs, and improvements in farmers’ capacity.

In addition, the South Halmahera Regency Government provided rice threshing machines to improve post-harvest efficiency.

Sustainable Agriculture

This increase in productivity was also supported by Harita Nickel through its Obi Food Security Center program (SENTANI). Harita Nickel’s Community Development Superintendent, Suryo Aji, explained that the program involves 28 active members from two farmer groups—Akemoriri and Batu Putih—along with the Obi Millennial Cooperative and the Buton Village Government.

“This harvest is proof of the farmers’ perseverance and hard work. The establishment of the Millennial Farmer Group represents hope and regeneration, while the initial planting symbolizes the future of sustainable agriculture. We believe cross-sector collaboration will position agriculture as a driver of sustainable welfare,” he said.
As a strategic step to ensure sustainability, the Millennial Farmer Group was also officially inaugurated. A total of 17 young people from Buton, Jikotamo, and Akegula villages were appointed to become the driving force of farmer regeneration on Obi Island.
The harvest event concluded with a joint harvesting ceremony followed by the initial planting of paddy rice as a symbol of continuity for the next planting season. Through this cross-sector collaboration, Harita Nickel hopes that the agricultural sector in South Halmahera will continue to grow, contribute to regional food security, and improve community welfare.

The Regent of South Halmahera, Hasan Ali Bassam Kasuba, officially inaugurated the Madinatul Hijrah Mosque, located in the new residential area of Kawasi Village, Obi District, on Thursday (22/1). The inauguration, held in conjunction with the commemoration of Isra Mi’raj of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) 1447 H, forms part of the regional government’s efforts to strengthen the spiritual and social life of the Obi Island community.
The inauguration was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the signing of a commemorative plaque by Regent Bassam Kasuba, accompanied by the Sultan of Bacan, Muhammad Irsyad Maulana Syah, and members of the South Halmahera Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda).
In his remarks, Regent Bassam Kasuba emphasized the philosophical meaning behind the name Madinatul Hijrah. He interpreted the relocation of Kawasi residents to the new settlement as a form of social hijrah, drawing a parallel to the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to Medina, which began with the construction of a mosque as the center of Islamic civilization.

The Regent explained that mosques serve as the foundation of Islamic civilization, as they integrate religious values with social life. He expressed hope that the relocation to the new settlement would be embraced as a spirit of hijrah that encourages improvements in faith as well as in social and community life.

“Our great hope is that this mosque will become a center of togetherness and unity for the people of Kawasi, enabling them to synergize with all stakeholders in developing Obi Island and South Halmahera,” he stated.

Positive Community Response

The new settlement, equipped with worship facilities, has received positive feedback from local religious leaders. The Chairwoman of the Madinatul Hijrah Majelis Taklim, Siti Muhammad, expressed her comfort living in the new settlement, which she considers more conducive to religious activities, including children’s education.

“In my opinion, there is no reason to refuse living in the new settlement, because in every aspect it is far better and more comfortable. Religious activities are more vibrant, and the women are becoming more united,” she said.

A similar sentiment was expressed by Ahmad Osalia, Imam of the Madinatul Hijrah Mosque, who noted that religious activities at the mosque have been ongoing for the past two years since residents began moving into the new settlement. With the official inauguration of the mosque, he hopes it will further motivate residents to strengthen their faith and piety.

“I hope this mosque will be enlivened not only for the five daily prayers, but also for various social and community activities, especially in welcoming the upcoming holy month of Ramadan,” he said.

The inauguration ceremony proceeded in a solemn and festive atmosphere, featuring a traditional Cakalele dance performed by children, recitations of shalawat, and a Tabligh Akbar delivered by Sheikh Abdullah Saleh Mohammed Jaber and Ustadz M. Saleh Sakola. The event also included the formal appointment of the mosque’s takmir body and the management of the majelis taklim, marking the beginning of community-led management of the mosque.

As industrial activities in the Obi Industrial Zone continue to develop, Harita Nickel reinforces its commitment to ensuring that the surrounding communities also benefit economically. Through various Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) programs, the company strives to deliver inclusive and sustainable growth.
This commitment has come to the attention of Telapak, an independent organization focused on environmental and social governance. Social observations were conducted in five villages around Harita Nickel's operations-Kawasi, Soligi, Buton, Akegula, and Gambaru-with a focus on social change, local economic strengthening, and community participation in empowerment programs. Telapak found that various Harita Nickel initiatives, especially those carried out in collaboration with women's groups and local MSME entrepreneurs, have opened up new business opportunities and improved family welfare.
Dickson Aritonang, Deputy Chairman of the Telapak Association, said that one example of success came from the Obi Jaya Mandiri MSME, a women's business group in Kawasi Village with 34 active members. "In 2019, the group's income reached Rp150 million per year. Support from Harita Nickel through the provision of a business location and business management training helped them build the Hopmart minimarket. Now, their turnover has increased to Rp1.3 billion per year," Dickson said.
In addition to the trade sector, initiatives in agriculture have also shown positive results. Telapak has recorded the success of a farmer group in Akegula Village led by Mama Nia. Through a partnership program with Harita Nickel, she and her farmer group are now able to produce up to six tons of vegetables and fruits every month. The entire harvest is absorbed by the company through a sustainable partnership scheme.

"Initially, people in Akegula were hesitant to farm because they were worried that the crops would not be sold. However, thanks to the support and guaranteed purchase from Harita Nickel, agriculture is now a promising source of income," said Mama Nia.

Dickson believes that Harita Nickel's approach to community empowerment is not merely charitable in nature but rather encourages long-term economic independence. “The social programs developed by Harita Nickel are not merely acts of charity to provide temporary assistance, but rather long-term efforts to strengthen the livelihoods of communities surrounding the mine in terms of economy, education, health, and culture,” he emphasized.
The report from Telapak also notes the company's contributions in the areas of health, education, and infrastructure. The health services facilitated by Harita Nickel provide care to more than 350 mothers and children every month. In the field of education, the company provides incentives to 89 educators and supports children's learning process through the Rumah Belajar Simore program. In terms of infrastructure, the company built the new Kawasi Village and the Akelamo Bridge connecting Kawasi Village with Soligi.
Telapak's visit and the social observation report serve as proof of Harita Nickel's transparency and accountability in conducting its operational activities in the Obi Industrial Area. The company is committed to accountable industrial activities that are not only productivity-oriented but also bring sustainable social benefits to the surrounding community.

Telapak Highlights the Value of Harita Nickel’s Empowerment Program in Advancing Economic Independence in Obi Communities

Not all great things start with long-term planning. Sometimes, they begin with a simple need. Such as when several employees of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), PT Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS), and PT Obi Sinar Timur (OST) got together and realized that their creative interests needed space to grow.
From that need, the idea of an internal creative space began to take shape. This potential was first recognized by Christoforus Nanda Rahardian, Industrial Relations Specialist at HJF. He saw that many employees had creative interests and abilities, but did not yet have a shared platform.
According to Christo, this idea stemmed from simple observations of everyday life at the site. "I saw a lot of creative potential in my friends. Some like photography, some are interested in making videos, but everyone works independently. From there came the desire to create a more fluid space, so they could learn from each other and feel like they belong," he said.
From there, Herocreative was formed, an internal community that serves as a space for learning and collaboration for Harita Nickel employees on Obi Island, run by employees, for employees.
The head of Herocreative, Rudianto Sapsuha from the Fire Emergency Service department, believes that Herocreative serves as a space that bridges employees' creative interests with a spirit of collaboration. “Many of our colleagues are actually interested in creative fields, but don't know where to start. Here, we learn together, help each other, and if possible, contribute to the company as well," he said.
What makes this community interesting is its diversity. Some members are holding a camera for the first time, those who started by learning video editing through online tutorials, and those who have been pursuing photography for a long time but have never had a space to share. This combination of skills actually helps them grow. No one feels superior, no one is left behind, everyone grows together.
Muhammad Rizal Tahir, a member of Herocreative from the Equipment department who is often actively involved in internal company activities, said that this experience changed the way he viewed his routine. "There are many things in the field that turned out to be interesting. I used to overlook them, but after joining Hero Creative, I became more sensitive to things that I could turn into content," he said.
Meanwhile, Nur Fadhilah Ahmad from the Production department felt something similar. Despite coming from a work background far removed from the creative world, Herocreative opened up a new perspective for her in seeing her daily life at the site.
"I'm so happy to be part of Herocreative. I didn't really understand how to create content at first, but now I'm starting to learn how to come up with more interesting ideas," she explained.
Nur, who has been working at HJF since 2023, also admitted that the existence of Hero Creative makes the work environment feel more comfortable. Moreover, the company regularly holds various interesting events involving this community. “So, I don't get too bored with the same old routine,” she explained.
Over time, Herocreative's activities continue to grow. From small shooting sessions to being involved in documenting various internal events, this community has begun to play a role in presenting more organized visuals. They do not work as a professional team, but their contributions have allowed many divisions and departments to see the company's activities from a closer perspective.
The impact was even greater than they had imagined. Members from various departments who previously rarely interacted with each other were now able to sit together, discuss, give each other feedback, and even laugh when reviewing photos that were out of focus.

For Harita Nickel, the presence of the Herocreative community adds a new dimension to the development of internal engagement. This community shows that creativity can flourish in any environment as long as it is given the opportunity, support, and space.
Herocreative may be growing slowly, but the foundation they have built is strong: an initiative facilitated by the company and run entirely by employees. They are not a formal unit, nor a large team, but their presence reminds us that behind every operational activity there is always a human story worth celebrating.
That is where Herocreative finds its role, bringing a new perspective, presenting stories from behind the scenes, and affirming that creativity always has a place, as long as there are those willing to give it space.

Herocreative, A Space for Employees to Develop Their Creativity

Indonesia is already a major player in the global nickel industry. Home to the world’s largest nickel reserves, Indonesia plays a crucial role in the global supply chain for electric vehicles (EVs). One company at the forefront of nickel downstreaming is Harita Nickel, which operates on Obi Island, North Maluku. Harita Nickel not only mines nickel but also processes it into several value-added products needed by the alternative energies industry, particularly EV batteries. These processed products include Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), nickel sulfate, cobalt sulfate, and electrolytic cobalt.
Curious about the uses of these products and their respective roles in the EV battery industry? Check out the full explanation below!

Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP)

Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) is an intermediate product produced from the processing of laterite nickel ore. The primary components of MHP are nickel and cobalt, which can then be further processed into downstream products with higher economic value. MHP plays a crucial role as the primary raw material for producing nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate, two key materials for electric vehicle batteries. Utilizing its MHP production facility, Harita Nickel has successfully positioned Obi Island as one of Indonesia's strategic nickel downstreaming hubs.

Nickel Sulfate

Nickel sulfate is a critical component in the manufacture of lithium-ion battery cathodes, which are used in electric vehicles. This product is increasingly sought after, due to global trends toward green energy and the ongoing transition away from fossil fuel-based vehicles to their electric counterparts. Harita Nickel produces nickel sulfate to international standards, enabling the company to supply the global battery industry. This makes Indonesia more than just a supplier of raw materials, but also a producer of high-value-added processed materials.

Cobalt Sulfate

Besides nickel, cobalt also plays a crucial role in EV batteries. Cobalt sulfate is used to increase battery energy density, stability, and longevity. In the global supply chain, cobalt is often referred to as a critical mineral, and its presence is crucial to the quality of electric vehicle batteries. Harita Nickel produces cobalt sulfate from further processed MHP. This product diversifies Harita Nickel's downstream portfolio and strengthens Indonesia's position in the global EV battery industry.

Electrolytic Cobalt

Besides sulfate, cobalt can also be produced through Electrowinning technology, which produces pure cobalt metal. This product has various applications, including as a raw material for the battery and electronics industries, as well as for specialty materials requiring high-quality cobalt. Electrolytic cobalt is a pure form of cobalt metal produced through an electrowinning process, or electrochemical precipitation. This process involves using an electric current to separate cobalt from a cobalt-rich electrolyte solution. The resulting cobalt metal has a purity of up to 99.98%, and is widely used in modern technology development, including as the raw materials for rechargeable (lithium-ion) batteries; specialty steels, such as superalloys for turbines, magnets, and aircraft engines; and as catalysts in the chemical industry. Nickel’s journey from the mine to its role as a key component in EV batteries is clear evidence of the importance of industrial downstreaming. Harita Nickel, through its processed products such as MHP, nickel sulfate, cobalt sulfate, and electrolytic cobalt, has played a significant role in supporting the global energy transition towards a greener future. With high-value-added processing conducted on Obi Island, Harita Nickel not only contributes to the national economy but also strengthens Indonesia's position as a major player in the global electric vehicle supply chain.

EV Battery Raw Materials: Introducing Processed Products From Harita Nickel

The 2026 National Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Month serves as a strategic momentum for Harita Nickel to reaffirm its collective commitment to strengthening a safety culture founded on connectivity and mutual responsibility. In alignment with the national theme, “Building a Professional, Reliable, and Collaborative National OHS Management Ecosystem,” Harita Nickel positions OHS not merely as a system, but as an integrated ecosystem embedded in the daily operations of all Insan Harita.
This commitment was reflected in the opening series of BK3N activities held across Harita Nickel’s operational areas on Obi Island, South Halmahera. The opening ceremony marked a unified declaration of commitment involving business units, management, and business partners, emphasizing that safety is a shared responsibility that must be implemented comprehensively and consistently.

Deputy Technical Support of PT Obi Sinar Timur (OST), Amirrudin, stated that the principle of “Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga” extends beyond a tagline and must be internalized as a core value in every work activity. Safety, he noted, transcends organizational structures, functions, and roles, and is the responsibility of every individual as part of a single organization.
“Operational activities inherently involve potential hazards; however, incidents are preventable. Consistent adherence to procedures, compliance with OHS standards, and proactive care through mutual reminders are fundamental to establishing a safe working environment,” he explained.
He further emphasized that while management remains committed to providing adequate safety systems, procedures, training, and facilities, effective implementation is contingent upon the active participation and accountability of all Insan Harita.

In line with this, Primus Priyanto, Head of Mining Engineering at PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, underscored the importance of developing a professional, reliable, and collaborative OHS ecosystem. He noted that professionalism in OHS begins with a thorough understanding of occupational risks and is reinforced through consistent application of risk controls and strict compliance with work procedures.
“Professional conduct is demonstrated through consistency in adhering to work procedures and applying risk control measures,” Primus stated.
He added that the reliability of the OHS system must be continuously strengthened through the enhancement of human resource competencies and the reinforcement of the Mining Safety Management System (SMKP). This includes strengthening safety leadership, developing supervisory capabilities, and cultivating a constructive feedback culture that addresses unsafe actions or conditions as a form of care rather than blame.
“Feedback and corrective reminders should be viewed as an expression of concern for collective safety,” he emphasized.
Furthermore, Primus highlighted collaboration as a critical enabler of an effective OHS ecosystem. Cross-departmental involvement in setting OHS objectives, targets, and programs, supported by regular joint evaluations, is essential to ensure alignment and sustainability of OHS implementation across all operational areas.

Through the commemoration of BK3N 2026, Harita Nickel calls on all Insan Harita to embed safety as a core value, habitual practice, and organizational character. Returning home safely is not an option, but an obligation. Guided by the spirit of “Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga”, Harita Nickel remains committed to fostering a safe, healthy, and productive work environment while continuously strengthening the OHS management ecosystem.

Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga: Harita Nickel Reinforces Its OHS Ecosystem

Harita Nickel collaborated with the Kawasi Village Government to facilitate the formation of a Village Disaster Preparedness Team (TSBD). This initiative began with disaster preparedness training and simulations involving 51 residents in the New Settlement of Kawasi Village on Friday, December 19, 2025.
This activity was led by the South Halmahera Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). It involved multi-stakeholder collaboration, ranging from the Oesman Sadik Meteorological Station, the Ternate Search and Rescue Office, the Auxiliary Health Center, to the Village Maternity Clinic. This cross-sector collaboration strengthens integrated and responsive disaster risk mitigation.

Preparedness is a strategic necessity for Kawasi Village, located in a coastal area with potential for earthquakes and high rainfall intensity. Based on the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) monitoring, peak rainfall on Obi Island occurs in June, which has the potential to increase the risk of natural disasters. Therefore, 43 adults and 8 children participating in the training were provided with materials on risk identification, evacuation simulations, and strengthening coordination during emergencies.
The Head of the Welfare Section of Kawasi Village Government, Bambang Bakir, emphasized the importance of establishing the TSBD as a concrete step to improve community preparedness. "This training is important so that the community is ready to face the impacts of weather changes and potential natural disasters in Kawasi Village. The establishment of the Village Disaster Preparedness Team strengthens the role of residents as the main actors in preparedness," he said.
The Coordinator of Observation and Information at the Oesman Sadik South Halmahera Meteorological Station, Yusran Titdoy, added that preparedness must be based on data. "Disaster preparedness must be supported by accurate weather information. This year, the peak rainfall on Obi Island occurred in June. The BMKG is strengthening its monitoring so that the community can obtain early information on the potential impact of the weather," he explained.
This initiative is also in line with the spirit of Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga (One Harita, Looking After Each Other), and the Community Empowerment Program (PPM). Assistant Vice President of Site Corporate Communications at Harita Nickel, Joseph Sinaga, emphasized that the resilience of the community is the foundation of shared sustainability.

Harita Nickel Supports TSBD Kawasi through Disaster Preparedness Training

Behind its contribution to national development and economic growth, the mining industry carries inherently high occupational risks. Every worker in mining operations faces real hazards on a daily basis—from extreme working environments and the use of heavy machinery to exposure to materials that may be harmful to health.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) serves as the foundation for managing these risks and preventing workplace accidents and health-related incidents. Through an effective management system, potential hazards can be controlled — which is why OHS plays a crucial role in mining operations.
In this article, we will explore what OHS is, how it is applied within the mining industry, and how Harita Nickel integrates OHS as part of its identity and work culture across all operational lines.

What is OHS?

OHS, which is known in Indonesia as K3 (Keselamatan dan Kesehatan Kerja), means Occupational Health and Safety in English. This term encompasses all policies, procedures, and efforts to protect workers from physical and psychological dangers, as well as from hazardous work environments.
In Indonesia, the legal basis for OHS implementation includes:

Law Number 1 of 1970 concerning Occupational Safety, which outlines employer and employee obligations in ensuring workplace safety.

Government Regulation Number 50 of 2012 concerning the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (SMK3).

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation Number 26 of 2018 concerning Good Mining Engineering Practices, which specifically regulates mining safety, occupational health, and environmental management.

With these legal foundations, OHS is not merely a moral obligation or internal policy — it is a mandatory requirement that ensures companies maintain a safe and healthy working environment.

Why is OHS Essential in the Mining Industry?

The mining industry has unique workplace characteristics, including heavy machinery use, remote operational areas, and rapidly changing geological and weather conditions. Several reasons make OHS critically important in this sector:

Workers as main assets: Mining workers are at the frontline of operations and are key contributors to industrial success. Their safety and health must therefore be a top priority.

High levels of hazards and risks: Activities such as mining, blasting, hauling, and mineral processing carry significant risks of accidents and occupational illnesses if not properly managed.

Interaction between humans, equipment, and technology: Mining relies heavily on machinery and technological systems, yet human involvement remains decisive. This interaction can create safety risks if not carefully controlled.

Operational sustainability: Modern mining companies are evaluated not only on production output, but also on how safely and responsibly they operate.

Building a strong safety culture: Consistent implementation of OHS fosters a disciplined, collaborative, and caring work culture that supports long-term productivity and sustainability.

Implementation of OHS at Harita Nickel

Harita Nickel applies Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) as an integral part of all operational activities. This commitment is demonstrated through structured management systems, safety culture reinforcement, and strategic collaboration. Examples include:
a. International Management System Certifications
Harita Nickel has obtained ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certifications, confirming that its environmental and occupational health and safety management systems meet international standards. This reflects the company's commitment to implementing best practices within its Integrated Management System.
b. Training and Capacity Building
Capacity building related to OHS is a priority at Harita Nickel, starting from safety induction to specialized internal training and competency development based on job functions. Knowledge and awareness of OHS are essential foundations for creating a strong safety culture. One example includes seminars and discussion forums conducted in collaboration with the University of Indonesia.
c. Strengthening Commitment and Awareness
Harita Nickel runs programs aimed at reinforcing corporate OHS commitment and increasing safety awareness across all business units. These efforts include hazard identification, routine inspections, safety standard implementation, and safety campaigns. The 2025 National OHS Month served as a momentum to disseminate safety messages widely and emphasize collective responsibility across the organization.
d. Strategic Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
Harita Nickel continuously collaborates with academic institutions to enhance scientific and technical approaches to OHS. In 2025, the company conducted a large-scale emergency response drill in collaboration with the Disaster Risk Reduction Center (DRRC) of the University of Indonesia, involving management teams, emergency units, employees, and government representatives.
e. Strengthening the Culture of “Safety is Everyone’s Role”
In daily operations, Harita Nickel emphasizes that OHS is not solely the responsibility of the Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) function, but of every individual. OHS is embedded as a core company value aligned with the spirit of “Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga.” Practices such as reporting potential hazards, proper use of PPE, and self-inspection are part of daily work routines aligned with the philosophy that “working safely means going home safely.”
The implementation of OHS in the mining industry is not merely about regulatory compliance, but also about upholding human values, protecting lives, and ensuring operational continuity. Harita Nickel demonstrates that through a comprehensive approach ranging from international standards to daily work culture, Occupational Health and Safety can be embedded into the core values of a company.
