Harita Nickel has awarded Operational Licenses (Surat Izin Operasional/SIO) to 60 operators as part of its efforts to strengthen occupational health and safety (OHS) culture and ensure formally recognized competency standards.
A total of 60 participants successfully obtained licenses for heavy equipment and Overhead Crane operations. This milestone marks an important achievement for the recipients and reflects the company’s commitment to ensuring that all operational personnel meet standardized competency requirements.

The program also contributes to strengthening local workforce capacity. The participation of employees from Obi and North Maluku forms part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of human resources in its operational areas.
The SIO certification process was conducted from November 20 to December 4, 2025, in three batches. Of the 60 participants, 2 were from PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) and 58 from PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), with the majority being local talents from North Maluku.
The certification was implemented through a self-funded scheme by employees, facilitated by the company through a structured mechanism. This approach not only expands access to competency development but also fosters a stronger sense of ownership and individual responsibility toward professional excellence.
Deputy Head of HSE and Security at PT MSP, Charles Hasiholan, emphasized that the SIO is more than an administrative document.“An Operational Licence is not just a piece of paper. It represents proven competence and a commitment to workplace safety, as well as compliance recognized by the state. Most importantly, it is about how we uphold safety in daily operations,” he stated.
He further added that operator competency is not defined solely by technical skills, but also by knowledge and work attitude. These three elements form the foundation of certified operators and position them as role models in the workplace.
Meanwhile, HR & Admin Superintendent of PT MSP, Tius Subekti, noted that this achievement reflects the company’s core values. “This is a manifestation of the achievement-oriented mindset that defines Harita Nickel’s values. With this certification, each operator is expected to uphold responsibility and integrity in every task,” he explained.
Through this SIO certification initiative, Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to developing a competent, high-integrity, and safety-driven workforce. Certified operators are expected to serve as the frontline in fostering a safe, productive, and sustainable working environment.

Strengthening Operator Competency and Safety Culture, Harita Nickel Awards SIO Certifications

On Obi Island, career journeys often begin with simple opportunities, then evolve over time through experience, perseverance, and dedication. For many local residents, success is not instant; it unfolds gradually, in step with the dynamics of a growing industry.
One such story is that of Frangi Cako, a young man from Kawasi. He began his career at Harita Nickel in 2015 as a security officer at just 18 years old. Over time, his discipline and experience led him to become a Team Leader, and since September 2025, he has served as a Security Supervisor.
“In Industrial Sector 3, we have 43 personnel assigned to strategic points across the company,” he said.
For Angki, as Frangi is commonly known, the role of security goes far beyond guarding posts. His responsibilities include managing personnel, coordinating safety measures, and handling administrative work. He has also had the opportunity to attend computer training, something he had never experienced before.
“Here, we learn new skills that directly support our work,” he added.
Angki also challenges the perception that local workers have limited opportunities to grow. For him, those opportunities are real, provided there is a willingness to learn and work hard.
“I was born and raised in Kawasi. Reaching this position proves that local talent has real opportunities here. What matters is dedication, not complaints,” he emphasized.
Having spent more than a decade working his way up from the ground level, his journey carries a clear message for the younger generation of Obi: there are no shortcuts to building a career.

From the Field to Supervisory Roles
A similar journey is shared by Yokber Cecene, now a Supervisor in Construction & Engineering. He joined the company in 2007, when around 50 Kawasi residents were recruited to help lay the foundation of operations.
“I started from the most basic roles. Now, I lead a team consisting of several foremen and crew members,” he said.
His experience is closely tied to construction work, including the development of the Akelamo Bridge connecting Kawasi and Soligi. Dedication and accountability have been key to his career progression.
This growth is also reflected in his personal life. Once a young worker, he is now a family man, with a child currently pursuing education in Yogyakarta.
“Our family’s economic condition has improved significantly. My wife now runs a small grocery business near our residential area,” he shared.
For Yokber, industrial development has not only created jobs but also opened up broader economic opportunities for the surrounding community.

Yokber Cecene, a native of Kawasi, now holds the position of Construction & Engineering Supervisor. He began his career on site before moving into a supervisory role.

A New Generation Taking Its First Steps
From the younger generation, Sifa Sahbila Amirudin represents a different pathway. The 19-year-old from Soligi Village began her journey through the PELITA (Skills and Competency Development Program), Batch IV, with a focus on Mandarin language training.
She is currently an intern in the HRGA Department, working as a translator. “I chose to study computer skills and Mandarin because they are highly relevant to the industry’s current needs,” she explained.
Financial constraints once prevented her from pursuing higher education. However, the internship opportunity has opened new doors for personal growth.
At first, she admitted feeling uncertain and lacking confidence. Yet, her experience in the workplace has helped her grow. “I was warmly welcomed. Many colleagues supported and guided me,” she said.
For Sifa, this experience is not just about work; it is a first step toward supporting her family and building her future.
The stories of Angki, Yokber, and Sifa reflect the transformation taking place on Obi Island. Amid the rapid growth of the nickel industry, more local talents are no longer merely bystanders, they are stepping forward and taking part.
They are growing alongside the industry and are now truly becoming key contributors in their own homeland.

Growing with the Industry, Obi’s Local Talents Step Forward

The launch of a program to build and rehabilitate 1,200 substandard homes (RTLH) by the North Maluku Provincial Government in 2026 marks a growing focus on the quality of housing for the community. This program is part of the local government’s efforts to improve residents’ well-being through safer, healthier, and more livable living environments.
An illustration of how this vision can be realized is also evident in various other initiatives at the local level, one of which is the development of a new settlement in Kawasi Village, initiated by the South Halmahera Regency Government with support from Harita Nickel, which serves as an example of a collaborative approach in creating a settlement that support the growth and development of the next generation.

Housing models in the Kawasi Village's New Settlement, Obi Island, South Halmahera

The development of the Kawasi Village New Residential Area on Obi Island is considered to have met the parameters of an ideal modern city. Rais D. Hi. Yusuf, a lecturer in engineering at the University of Muhammadiyah North Maluku (UMMU), stated that the Kawasi New Residential Area has implemented the three main principles of an inclusive city: livable, smart, and sustainable.
According to Rais, an inclusive city must provide equal access to public services and economic opportunities for all residents regardless of their background. “The Kawasi Village New Residential Area was designed using a human-centered design approach, where the development of basic infrastructure, social facilities, and public services is focused entirely on human needs and well-being,” he explained.
One of the standout technical aspects of this project is the use of industrial waste in the form of nickel slag as a substitute for coarse aggregate in concrete mixes. Rais explained that the use of nickel slag from Harita Nickel’s refining facility on Obi Island represents a concrete step toward an environmentally friendly construction industry. When applied to permanent housing and neighborhood roads, this material results in sturdy, more durable and resilient structures.
“Nickel slag has dense angular particles and chemical components such as silica and lime that support the cement hydration process. As a result, the concrete produced is of higher quality, more durable, and significantly reduces reliance on natural aggregates,” explained this Master of Urban Design graduate from Gadjah Mada University (UGM).
From a spatial planning perspective, Rais highlighted the implementation of the mixed-use and diverse city concept in the Kawasi Village New Settlement. This concept integrates various functional activities, including residential areas, commercial zones, public facilities, and green open spaces, into a single integrated area.
He added that, based on the aspects and criteria outlined in Ministry of Public Works Regulation No. 2 of 2016, the Kawasi New Settlement has met the criteria for an Eco-Settlement (Ecological Settlement).
“The Kawasi area is not just an ordinary settlement, but a concrete example of how social, economic, and ecological aspects are balanced. This can serve as a benchmark for the planning and design of urban residential areas in other regions, particularly in industrial zones,” concluded Rais.
Rais’s explanation as an academic aligns with the experiences of residents who have been living in the Kawasi Village New Settlement. One of them is Yunince, who said the new settlement offers a cleaner and more comfortable environment compared to her previous home.
“When it rains, it doesn’t get muddy; when it’s hot, it isn’t dusty. Here, we have electricity and water 24 hours a day. We also use air conditioning here,” said Yunince.
Nur Eneng Rahmat (33) expressed similar sentiments, noting a significant improvement in comfort and tranquility in the Kawasi New Settlement. Moreover, Nur Eneng pointed out that the New Settlement has opened up economic opportunities for residents. She herself runs a business selling groceries and vegetables.
“My daily revenue is around 1–2 million rupiah. In the New Settlement of Kawasi Village, economic opportunities are wide open for me. Life here is also more organized; I see my neighbors more often, and religious activities are thriving,” she said.
In Obi, improvements in housing quality are gradually changing how the community views the future. A more organized environment fosters healthier social interactions, while adequate basic facilities help families navigate their daily lives with greater peace of mind.

Kawasi’s New Settlement Serves as a Model for Inclusive and Sustainable Housing in North Maluku

The nickel mining and processing industry is often portrayed as a masculine world, harsh, noisy, and high-risk. Yet within Harita Nickel’s operational landscape on Obi Island, South Halmahera, that narrative is gradually evolving. Emancipation is no longer just an idea, but a reality reflected in the dedication of resilient women across the organization.
These women not only hold strategic roles at the forefront of occupational safety and environmental protection but also serve as key drivers in fostering social harmony with surrounding communities. Their stories demonstrate that in an industry traditionally dominated by men, equal opportunities to contribute and lead are very real. Here, opportunity is defined not by gender, but by competence.

Local Women at the Frontline: Safeguarding Harmony and Safety

The presence of local women in strategic positions represents one of the strongest reflections of inclusivity at Harita Nickel. Margarita Luwudara and Yufita Tuhuteru, both natives of Obi Island, play critical roles in two vital aspects of the company: social engagement and operational safety.
Margarita, Community Relations Superintendent at PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) Tbk., has served as a vital bridge between the company and local communities since 2018. As a resident of Kawasi Village, the core operational area, Rita brings an empathetic, community-centered perspective to ensure that social programs are well-targeted and impactful.
“As someone from Obi, I am grateful for the support provided by the company. It has a significant impact on our future, and I hope the younger generation of Obi will dare to dream,” she said. For Rita, her role is more than a profession; it is a way to empower her hometown.
While Rita nurtures social harmony, Yufita Tuhuteru operates at the technical frontline of high-risk industrial processes. As a Process Safety Engineer at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), this native of Soligi Village is responsible for ensuring process safety at facilities producing materials for electric vehicle batteries.
With a master’s degree in chemistry from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yufita focuses on maintaining the integrity of processing systems to prevent critical incidents. For her, ensuring plant safety is more than a matter of compliance; it is a form of responsibility and care, protecting both her colleagues and the community where she was born.

Managing Natural Challenges for Environmental Sustainability

Mining operations inevitably interact closely with natural conditions. At PT TBP Tbk., high rainfall on Obi Island presents a constant operational challenge that requires precision and vigilance. At this critical point, Esmar Sulea Datu Lalong, Senior Mine Hydrology Engineer, and Mira Marlinda, Environment Supervisor, play a key role.
They are responsible for managing run-off water, particularly through sediment ponds such as Tugu Raci 2, which spans 43 hectares. “Water quality is strictly controlled through physical and chemical methods to ensure it meets regulatory standards before being discharged,” explained Esmar and Mira.
A similar challenge, in a different operational context, is handled by Rahma Maulida. As a Laboratory Assistant Engineer at the Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF) of PT HPL, Rahma oversees water quality in tailings management areas. Daily monitoring at both inlet and outlet points ensures that operations remain safe from potential contamination and landslide risks.

Rahma Maulida monitors the water in the treatment pond to ensure that the water discharged into the environment meets quality standards.

From Coastal Conservation to a Culture of Compliance

Environmental stewardship extends beyond mining areas to coastal ecosystems, led by Putri Wulandari. As an Environment Marine Foreman and a graduate of Khairun University in Ternate, Wulan leads concrete initiatives such as mangrove planting, coral substrate installation, and routine marine monitoring across the Obi Industrial Area.

Putri Wulandari checks the quality of the seawater and documents the condition of the ecosystem as part of environmental monitoring.

Ultimately, all these efforts, from upstream to downstream, are anchored in one fundamental principle: a culture of compliance. At the smelting facility of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), this responsibility is upheld by Claudia Kowaas. As Occupational Health and Safety Compliance System Staff and a graduate of Universitas Sam Ratulangi, she ensures that safety standards are not merely documented, but actively implemented.
“Compliance is the foundation. It is what ensures that every worker can return home safely to their families,” Claudia emphasized.

Claudia Kowaas carefully analysed the data and strengthened the OHS management system at Harita Nickel.

The presence of women in these critical roles at Harita Nickel is not an anomaly, but a reflection of the mining industry’s transformation. As noted by the Executive Director of the Indonesian Mining Association (IMA), Hendra Sinadia, women’s participation in the mining sector has grown significantly, reaching leadership levels and reshaping the industry into a more inclusive space.
At Harita Nickel, these women demonstrate a clear message: they are not here to fill quotas. They are decision-makers, guardians of social harmony, risk mitigators, and frontline leaders ensuring that all operations align with the company’s commitment to people development, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.

Kartini Day at Harita Nickel: Women Driving Safety, Environmental Stewardship, and Community Engagement

Climate change is a tangible and growing challenge that affects many aspects of life, from everyday activities to industrial operations, including mining. Increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, rising global temperatures, and more frequent extreme weather events are reinforcing the need for more responsible energy management.
In this context, Earth Day serves as a timely reminder of our collective responsibility to maintain environmental balance through measurable and accountable actions in mining operations. As a responsible nickel mining and processing company, Harita Nickel is committed to bringing the spirit of Earth Day to life through its Climate Action program.
Harita Nickel’s ESG Transformation Manager, Zahedi Zakaria, explained that the company’s Climate Action program focuses on both mitigation and adaptation efforts in addressing climate change.
“On the mitigation side, Harita Nickel has developed a Decarbonization Roadmap to guide our efforts in improving energy efficiency and gradually reducing emissions. On the adaptation side, we are also implementing various initiatives to align our operations with our Climate Action targets,” he said.

Sustainable Energy Initiatives (SEI) at Harita Nickel
A key component of this Decarbonization Roadmap is the implementation of Sustainable Energy Initiatives (SEI), designed to support emission reduction targets while improving operational efficiency. These initiatives are rolled out progressively through energy optimization, equipment and process upgrades, and the adoption of more sustainable energy solutions. Key initiatives include:

Through a structured and collaborative approach, Harita Nickel continues to advance toward more efficient and responsible nickel mining and processing operations.

Celebrating Earth, Optimizing Energy: Harita Nickel’s Steps In Managing Emissions

A few months ago, Mulyono La Hasima had never worked with heavy equipment. Today, the young man from Soligi Village can be found inside a mining workshop on Obi Island, South Halmahera, inspecting the electrical systems of machinery used in daily operations.
Now working as an Auto Electrician at Harita Nickel, Mulyono is doing a job he once never imagined for himself.
“I didn’t have any skills before. Now I can help maintain and repair equipment,” he said.
Like many young people in remote regions, Mulyono finished high school without specialized skills that could immediately open the door to employment. For a time, he was unsure what came next.
The opportunity arrived when he joined the Mechanic Talent Pool Program (MTPP), a five-month intensive training initiative designed by Harita Nickel to prepare local workers for careers in the mining industry.

Mulyono La Hasima (center) and a group of Obi youths who graduated from the Mechanic Talent Pool Program (MTPP) are now pursuing careers as mechanics at Harita Nickel.

That was where everything began. Mulyono started from the basics, learning machine components, understanding how heavy equipment systems work, and adapting to the discipline and safety standards required in mining operations. What once felt unfamiliar soon became routine.
“At first it was difficult because everything was new. But over time I got used to it. The training really helped, and now I feel much more confident,” he said.
Today, Mulyono is no longer just learning. He is directly involved in daily operations, conducting routine inspections, assisting with repairs, and helping ensure heavy equipment remains operational.
Mulyono’s story is shared by Yislam Meidira, a young man from Laiwui Village who now works as a heavy equipment mechanic, assisting senior technicians with maintenance and repairs.
At his age, Yislam never expected a training program would eventually lead to employment.
“I’m happy. At first, I thought it was only training, but afterward I was offered a job. I used to have no skills, but now I’ve been trained and can work,” he said proudly.
For Yislam, the change is about more than employment. It is also about finding opportunities that once felt out of reach.
“Now I feel like I have direction,” he said.
Most MTPP participants come from similar backgrounds, little experience and no ready-to-use technical skills. Over five months, they are introduced to the realities of industrial work through hands-on learning and direct exposure to workshop environments.

The Graduates of the Mechanic Talent Pool Program (MTPP) receive briefings from supervisors before beginning their duties at the workshop facilities of Harita Nickel.

The training takes place not only in classrooms, but also in workshops where participants work directly with equipment and real operational situations. The approach helps ease the transition from training into the workplace.
Harita Nickel Operations Director, Younsel Evand Roos, said the program was created to bridge industry needs with local workforce potential.
“MTPP not only equips participants with technical skills, but also prepares them to work according to industry standards,” he said.
The initiative has also received support from the local government. Head of the South Halmahera Manpower and Transmigration Office, Daud Djubedi, said programs like this are important for expanding access to jobs while improving the quality of local workers.
“This addresses industry needs while also creating opportunities for the community,” he said.
For Mulyono, the transformation is not only about having a job, but also about how he now sees the future.
“When you have skills, you have more options. Wherever we are, we can always keep trying,” he said.

Mulyono La Hasima sedang mengerjakan perbaikan alat berat di area workshop atau fasilitas bengkel Harita Nickel.

On Obi Island, that transformation is beginning to take shape with slowly, but visibly. Young people who once started with no technical skills are now gradually taking on roles within the industry.
Programs like MTPP have become one pathway. At the same time, other initiatives such as the PELITA vocational program continue to grow and have now entered their fifth batch, offering training ranging from heavy equipment operation to Mandarin language classes and air-conditioning servicing.
For the company, these programs are part of a broader effort to develop a local workforce ready to grow alongside the industry. But for Mulyono and many others, the meaning is simpler.
They arrived with little experience. Today, they return not only with jobs, but with skills, confidence, and a clearer sense of the future they want to build for themselves.

From Unskilled to Skilled Mechanics: How Obi’s Youth Are Building New Futures at Harita Nickel

Harita Nickel continues to strengthen its occupational health and safety (OHS) culture, particularly at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), through a more creative communication approach and by reinforcing leadership roles in the field.
One of these efforts is the introduction of Kapita HEBAT, a safety campaign icon that represents the role of every worker in maintaining workplace safety. The character conveys a simple message: safety is everyone’s responsibility.
The name Kapita HEBAT reflects the company’s values, where “Kapita” means a leader at the frontline, while “HEBAT” refers to the spirit of HJF’s Excellent Behavior for Achieving Target, promoting excellent work behavior to achieve targets safely and responsibly.
This initiative is further strengthened through the SMART Leader K3 Environmental Program (K3LH), which prepares leaders to act as the frontline in implementing safety practices across operational areas. SMART Leader (Safety is My Attention and Responsibility to Target Zero Accidents) equips participants with the ability to identify risks and prevent potential accidents at an early stage.
Since its launch in 2025, the program has been attended by 629 employees from HJF and PT Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS), primarily at the staff to foreman level, including employees who have recently been promoted.
Deputy Department Head of Technical Support Harita Nickel, Agung Aribowo, emphasized that the program is designed to ensure leaders serve as role models in implementing workplace safety.
“Through SMART Leader, we want to ensure that leaders not only understand technical aspects, but also encourage their teams to actively identify potential hazards and ensure that every task is carried out safely,” he said.
The implementation of the program is directly felt in the field. Abdul Karim Amrullah, Equipment Foreman and SMART Leader, noted that the program has improved the team’s awareness in identifying risks before work begins.
“Safety talks and hazard identification have become essential before starting any work, allowing the team to operate more safely,” he said.

In practice, SMART Leaders apply the Task Risk Analysis approach to identify risks at every stage of a job, while ensuring consistent implementation of Life Saving Rules.
Through the combination of the Kapita HEBAT campaign and the strengthened role of SMART Leaders, Harita Nickel continues to foster a stronger safety culture, supporting a safe, healthy, and productive working environment for all employees.

Kapita HEBAT and SMART Leader Strengthen Safety Culture at Harita Nickel

The 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Ternate City and the surrounding area last Thursday (April 2) caused damage to residential areas and prompted affected residents to evacuate to various locations, particularly in outlying areas such as Batang Dua District.
In response to this situation, through its Harita Nickel Peduli program, the company has distributed humanitarian aid as part of the company’s initial response, focusing on areas that have been significantly affected and face logistical challenges.
The handover of the relief supplies took place at the Main Disaster Command Post at the former Ternate Mayor’s Office on Sunday, April 5. The supplies were handed over by Dedi Hermansyah, Head of the Ternate Representative Office of Harita Nickel, accompanied by Setyo Budi Lestari, Government Relations & Compliance Superintendent, and received by Rizal Marsaoly, Secretary of Ternate City.
The aid distributed includes tarps, mattresses, rice, instant noodles, blankets, and medicines, which were delivered through the Main Command Post to support temporary housing needs, daily logistics, and health services for affected residents. The distribution was carried out in coordination with the Main Disaster Command Post to ensure it followed the mechanisms established by the government.
Dedi Hermansyah, Head of Harita Nickel’s Ternate Representative Office, stated that the company’s presence in North Maluku also entails a social responsibility to be there during emergencies. “Harita Nickel is part of North Maluku. We share the grief felt by the residents. We hope this assistance can help ease the burden on the affected communities, particularly in Batang Dua,” said Dedi.
He hopes that the affected residents can quickly recover mentally and resume their normal activities. “May they be granted resilience and patience in facing this trial,” concluded Dedi.
The Regional Secretary of Ternate City, Rizal Marsaoly, appreciates Harita Nickel’s initiative. His office also plans to distribute humanitarian aid directly to residents today. “Thank you to Harita Nickel for its concern for the earthquake-affected residents. What has been provided is very helpful, as logistical aid is exactly what the affected residents need right now,” he said.
He also emphasized the importance of synergy between the private sector and the government in dealing with emergency situations like the current one, as such collaboration will alleviate the burden on disaster-affected residents.
Similarly, Robyanto Koloca, the District Head of Batang Dua, also expressed his appreciation for Harita Nickel’s concern. He noted that the situation in the affected areas still requires serious attention from various parties so that the recovery process can proceed more quickly.
“The impact of the earthquake in Batang Dua has been quite significant, affecting both residents’ homes and places of worship. This assistance from Harita Nickel is truly meaningful. We will distribute it to the affected residents as soon as possible. We hope that this kind of collaboration between the government and the private sector will continue to be strong, especially in emergency situations like this,” said Robyanto.

Harita Nickel Provides Logistical Aid to Earthquake Victims in Ternate

The warm atmosphere of Ramadan colored the meeting between Harita Nickel and local media journalists in North Maluku and South Halmahera. Through iftar gatherings held in Ternate on 13 March 2026 and in Labuha on 14 March 2026, Harita Nickel invited members of the media to strengthen their bonds and reinforce the communication established over the years.
As the time for breaking the fast approached, journalists from various local media outlets began to arrive. Light-hearted conversation soon filled the air amongst the guests present. In Ternate, the event was attended by 88 journalists representing various media outlets. On this occasion, Harita Nickel expressed its appreciation to the journalists who have long played a vital role in disseminating information in North Maluku. Ekhel Chandra Wijaya, Harita Nickel’s Vice President of Public & Internal Affairs, stated in his remarks that strong relations between the company and the media are key to fostering transparent communication.
“For us, the media plays a vital role as a partner in communicating accurate and balanced information to the public. We greatly value the work of the journalists who have consistently followed developments in the region. Therefore, we are using this Ramadan period as an opportunity to strengthen the relationships we have built,” he said.
Ekhel further added that Harita Nickel is committed to maintaining transparent communication with various stakeholders, including members of the media. It is hoped that gatherings such as this will continue to provide a more open forum for dialogue, facilitating the exchange of views on industry developments and issues affecting the region.
This year’s iftar with the media featured an interactive and informative event format. During the event, the company delivered a brief presentation on operational developments as well as a number of ongoing Community Development and Empowerment Programmes (PPM). This format opened up a broader space for discussion, allowing journalists to ask questions directly.
On this occasion, Harita Nickel’s Community Development Manager, Broto Suwarso, was present to explain Harita Nickel’s PPM roadmap in person. “Through this roadmap, we emphasise a participatory, phased approach focused on strengthening community capacity so that the programme’s benefits can continue to grow in the long term. Iftar Gathering with Local Media: Harita Nickel Strengthens Communication and Unity

Amid the rapid growth of the mining industry on Obi Island, a movement for food self-sufficiency is taking root under the leadership of Darwan Aduhasan, 33. Through his “Young Farmers” initiative, Darwan is showing that agriculture and mining do not have to compete with one another. Instead, they can work hand in hand to create tangible benefits for local communities.
A communications graduate, Darwan made the bold decision to step away from the conventional office career path and return to farming. At a time when many young people on Obi Island were applying for jobs with mining companies, he chose to lead a farmers’ group in Buton Village and gradually became a key supplier of food for thousands of Harita Nickel employees.
“I saw an enormous agricultural potential here. For 15 years, my family was able to make a living and even finance my education through university purely from horticultural farming. The presence of industry has actually become a catalyst because it has opened access to the market we needed,” said Darwan.
To encourage greater youth participation, Darwan established the PELANGI (the Farmers Upholding the Values of Unity and Mutual Cooperation) farmers’ group. The group is a pioneer in food self-sufficiency in the mining ring area, and its main mission is to challenge the idea that decent work can only be found within company operations.

Organic Revolution and Greater Market Certainty
The partnership between farmers and the company has grown stronger since 2022 through Harita Nickel’s Community Development and Empowerment Program. Starting with just two hectares of land, farmers mentored by Darwan, including the Daun Hijau and Cempaka farmer groups, recorded watermelon yields of 7 to 8 tons per hectare.
In 2024, the collaboration reached a new stage. Harita Nickel supported a full transition to organic farming methods. Through the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility team, farmers received training in producing their own compost and plant-based pesticides. The impact has been significant, with production costs falling sharply.
”With an investment of only IDR 250,000, we managed to harvest 2.75 tons of fully organic watermelon,” said Darwan, who recently received the 2024 Sustainable Village Development Award from the Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration.
All of the harvest is now regularly purchased by Harita Nickel's catering service. This pattern creates a healthy economic ecosystem: the company obtains a supply of fresh and healthy food for its employees, while farmers gain price and market certainty.

Vision for 2026: Expanding Land and Workforce
This success has inspired new optimism. From an initial membership of just 28 people, Darwan is targeting 100 active farmers by 2026, managing rice fields and horticultural land across Obi Island.
“My hope is simple. Through PELANGI, people will come to see that agriculture can provide a decent and sustainable livelihood, even in an area widely known as a mining center,” he concluded.
