Obi Island, South Halmahera — The distinctive aroma of various takjil delicacies and the lively chatter of residents transform the commercial area of the new Kawasi Village settlement every afternoon as the time for breaking the fast approaches. More than just an ordinary evening market, the vibrant atmosphere initiated by Harita Nickel through the “Sapa Ramadan” program has become a new economic pulse that energizes dozens of local MSMEs.
Every afternoon, hundreds of residents and Harita Nickel employees flock to rows of stalls offering takjil and basic food staples. The main attraction on Sunday afternoon (February 22) was a 50 percent discount program on all items. The strong enthusiasm from visitors became a catalyst for significant economic activity.
Hardiana and Abdul Khamis Muis, employees who took part in the shopping crowd, acknowledged that the bazaar not only makes affordable daily necessities more accessible but also offers a comforting reminder of culinary flavors from their hometowns.
“Almost every afternoon, my friends and I come here to hunt for takjil. It has become a routine for us. The food is delicious, and for us it also helps ease the longing for home,” said Ismail, the nickname of Abdul Khamis Muis.
Interestingly, the excitement and benefits of Sapa Ramadan transcend religious boundaries. Non-Muslim residents such as Yunince also joined the lively crowd, turning the bazaar into an inclusive space for social interaction while offering a rare opportunity to enjoy traditional Ramadan treats that are seldom found outside the holy month.
Economic Stimulus for Local Traders
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/mceu_36007297231772951290884.jpg" alt="Takjil Stans at Kawasi" width="1080" height="720">
<figcaption>Residents and Harita Nickel employees gather at takjil stalls in the commercial area of Kawasi Village’s new settlement ahead of iftar.</figcaption>
</figure>
For MSME players, the surge in visitors has translated directly into improved income. Tina Nomor, a vendor selling side dishes and ketupat, recorded an average daily revenue of Rp1 million since the bazaar opened.
A similar experience was shared by sisters Mila and Tika, who sell various takjil snacks. The company’s discount subsidy program has helped their products sell out more quickly, allowing the two to earn more than Rp1.5 million in a single day.
“Just one hour after opening, most of our items are already almost sold out. This subsidy really helps increase our income. We hope the crowds will continue until the end of Ramadan,” Mila said.
Sapa Ramadan demonstrates that the Kawasi commercial area—a more organized and integrated community market that has been home to hundreds of local traders since last year—holds strong potential as a new economic hub.
Suryo Aji from Harita Nickel’s Community Development team explained that the Sapa Ramadan bazaar involves 35 takjil vendors and 10 local staple-food traders. On regular days, the daily circulation of money ranges between Rp18 million and Rp20 million. This figure rises sharply to around Rp50 million when the 50 percent discount program is implemented.
“We hold this half-price discount twice during Sapa Ramadan through a subsidy mechanism. Traders still receive full payment based on normal prices for their first Rp500,000 in accumulated sales. This is our way of spreading joy while also providing direct economic stimulus to our local MSME partners,” Suryo Aji explained.
Sustainable Community Empowerment

Harita Nickel’s commitment to community empowerment extends beyond Kawasi. Previously, the company successfully organized a subsidized basic food bazaar in collaboration with Islamic study groups and PKK women’s groups in Soligi Village. Notably, all proceeds from the sale of these basic goods were not reclaimed by the company but were fully granted as business capital for local partners.
Until the end of Ramadan, Harita Nickel continues to roll out various activities across villages within its operational area, including providing assistance for orphans and the elderly. These initiatives reflect the company’s ongoing commitment to Community Development and Empowerment (PPM), ensuring that the company’s presence consistently brings added value and fosters greater independence for surrounding communities.<script src="https://cdn.flmngr.com/widgets.js?apiKey=FLMNFLMN" data-ts="1784623890125"></script>

Harita Nickel’s Ramadan Greetings Initiative Boosts Local MSME and Community Economy in Kawasi Village’s New Settlement

The Az-Zahra Majlis Taklim (Islamic study group) in Soligi Village, South Obi District, was livelier than usual on Friday afternoon (Feb 20). The enthusiasm of welcoming the holy month of Ramadan blended with the hustle and bustle of dozens of residents crowding Harita Nickel's affordable basic food (sembako) bazaar area.
Among the crowd was Wa Ati. The housewife's face beamed after successfully buying three grocery packages at once. For her, the initiative organized by Harita Nickel is like an oasis amidst the annual routine of rising food prices ahead of the fasting month.
"This is extremely helpful for us residents. We pray that the company's operations run smoothly," Wa Ati said gratefully. Now, she can breathe a sigh of relief as her family's kitchen supplies for Ramadan are well secured.
The enthusiasm of residents like Wa Ati is well-founded. A grocery package worth Rp300,000 could be taken home for just half the price, at Rp150,000. Each package contains essential food items: 5 kg of rice, 2 kg of wheat flour, 2 kg of sugar, 2 liters of cooking oil, and 1 can of condensed milk. Unsurprisingly, within just one hour of opening, hundreds of packages were immediately sold out as residents rushed to buy them.
<h3 dir="ltr">Business Capital from Sales Proceeds</h3>
Interestingly, the afternoon's joy did not solely belong to the buyers securing discounted prices. Behind the committee's bazaar table, Maya, an administrator of the Az-Zahra Majlis Taklim, was equally excited.
The Az-Zahra Majlis Taklim is one of four local partners collaborating with Harita Nickel to organize this bazaar. Besides Az-Zahra, two other majlis taklims and the Soligi Village Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) group were involved in the event. All proceeds from the grocery package sales are not returned to the company; instead, they are fully granted to these partner groups to serve as their collective business capital.
"Of course, we are also very happy and grateful to the company for providing us with this blessing," Maya expressed with a smile.
Her group successfully sold out their allocated 120 grocery packages, pocketing Rp18 million in fresh funds. "The money we receive will be used for our joint business capital," she added.
<h3 dir="ltr">Synergy Between the Company, Village Government, and Residents</h3>
The affordable bazaar, scheduled to run for four days from February 20 to 23, 2026, provides a total of 480 grocery packages. If all packages are sold out, the sales turnover from the four partners will reach Rp72 million—a significant figure to drive the village's micro-economy.
Harita Nickel's Community Relations Manager, Riyadi Supriadi, explained that the involvement of community elements is designed to make the program's benefits more sustainable. According to him, the affordable bazaar during Ramadan has been an annual routine in the villages surrounding the company's operational area.
"The purpose of this affordable bazaar is to help ease the residents' burden in meeting their basic needs. We involve local partners so that the sales proceeds can be used for collective business capital, thereby fostering the growth of local economic groups in Soligi," Riyadi stated.
This tangible support for food security and women's economic empowerment received full appreciation from the local village government. Soligi Village Head, Madaisi La Siriali, views the program as a clear manifestation of the company's attention to empowerment and economic strengthening.
"We hope that the synergy between the community, the village government, and the company can be continuously strengthened through activities that have a direct impact on the residents," Madaisi concluded.
The bazaar organized by Harita Nickel in Soligi Village does more than just provide affordable groceries for the community. Beyond that, the initiative nurtures the solemnity of fasting worship while sowing the seeds of economic independence for the residents living around the company's operational area

In many workplaces, the word "compliance" often feels dry: synonymous with stacks of thick documents, complicated tables, and stressful audits. However, for Claudia Gloria Kowaas, behind those rows of numbers and administrative checklists, there is something fundamental at stake: human lives.
Joining Harita Nickel on February 1, 2022, as an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Compliance &amp; System Staff, Claudia arrived with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health and a significant question: how do safety systems truly work in the high-risk mining industry?
"The first thing I learned is that procedural compliance is the foundation of work safety," she says. This sentence sounds simple, but its meaning becomes complex when confronted with the reality in the field.
Claudia is not on the operational front lines, operating heavy machinery or production equipment. However, every report she compiles, every accident data analysis she dissects, and every document she manages has a direct impact on thousands of operational working hours.
Her task is not merely ensuring the company passes audits. For Claudia, an audit is a test of the system's integrity. "During an audit, what is tested is consistency. Are procedures being executed as written? Have risks that previously emerged been controlled?" she asserts.
Her toughest challenge is often not the data, but human dynamics. Overseeing follow-up improvements across departments requires persistence. She must navigate tight deadlines and dense operational priorities.
"The most frequent obstacle is workers who consider procedures (SOPs) as mere formalities. In reality, unresolved audit findings or ignored SOPs are risk gaps that must be closed immediately," Claudia reveals.
Claudia's consistency in guarding this system has not gone unnoticed by management. Hendri Saputro, OHS Superintendent at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel, expressed appreciation for Claudia's performance, noting her vital role in maintaining the company's safety standards.
"Claudia is a meticulous and persistent figure. In OHS, administrative precision is the first gate of operational safety. Her ability to communicate compliance needs to other departments also greatly helps us keep the safety management system running effectively and sustainably," said Hendri.
Claudia's career journey at Harita Nickel has shaped her into a disciplined individual with integrity. She realizes that a safety system cannot stand alone; collective awareness is needed so that every policy is truly implemented, not just read.
"For me, work safety is a shared responsibility to protect every worker so they can work safely, stay healthy, and return to their families unharmed," she concludes.
Claudia proves that safety heroes are not always the loudest voices in the field. Sometimes, they are the people working in spaces rarely seen but who have a vast impact, ensuring the system becomes a sturdy final line of defense for all workers.<script src="https://cdn.flmngr.com/widgets.js?apiKey=FLMNFLMN" data-ts="1784683066994"></script>

Claudia Kowaas: When Compliance Becomes the Last Line of Defense for Safety

South Halmahera, February 18, 2026 – Harita Nickel continues to strengthen local human resource capacity through its vocational program, the Youth Skills Enhancement (PELITA) Batch IV. A total of 40 youths from Obi Island are participating in a certified Overhead Crane operator training as part of the company's efforts to build a workforce ready to meet the operational demands of the downstream nickel industry.
Harita Nickel's Community Development Manager, Broto Suwarso, stated that the PELITA program is designed to bridge the gap between industry needs and the potential of local youths who previously lacked specialized skills.
“The PELITA vocational initiative is a concrete manifestation of the company's commitment to enhancing local Human Resources (HR) capacity. This is our strategy to ensure that the community can be the masters of their own region, equipped with proven competencies,” Broto said.
As an integrated nickel mining and downstream company, Harita Nickel currently employs approximately 26,000 workers. Around 85 percent are Indonesian citizens, with about 50 percent hailing from North Maluku. The PELITA program serves as a key effort to continuously increase the involvement of local talent within the company's operational structure.
<img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/pelita%20iv%20ohc%202026_pak%20agung_1.png" alt="Handover of PELITA Batch IV" width="1616" height="1080" data-fm="true">
Over the course of three months, participants will undergo intensive training to operate Overhead Cranes. Furthermore, the program integrates mental, physical, and disciplinary development to instill a strong industrial work ethic in the participants.
“Our target is clear: to provide local youths with better career opportunities. It is proven that the majority of graduates from previous PELITA batches have been absorbed and are now working within the company's operational environment,” Broto added.
The direct impact of this program is felt by La Rehan, a PELITA Batch IV participant from Soligi Village. Previously working as a daily casual worker, he joined the selection process to seize the opportunity to learn new skills.
"I am thrilled to have been selected. This program provides an opportunity for us locals with minimal experience to acquire industrial skills. I hope this will serve as a stepping stone for my future career development," he expressed.
<img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/pelita%20iv%20ohc%202026_foto%20bersama.png" alt="Photo with PELITA Batch IV" width="1616" height="1080" data-fm="true">
The PELITA program has run successfully across several cohorts. The first batch produced 14 Wheel Loader operators, followed by the second batch with 28 Overhead Crane operators who are currently employed at the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) processing facility of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF). Meanwhile, the third batch, which focused on Mandarin language proficiency, graduated 22 participants who are now entering their apprenticeship phase.
The consistent implementation of the PELITA program reflects Harita Nickel's approach to building an inclusive employment ecosystem on Obi Island. By strengthening local competencies, the company not only supports community empowerment but also solidifies a safe, adaptive, and long-term-oriented operational foundation.<script src="https://cdn.flmngr.com/widgets.js?apiKey=FLMNFLMN" data-ts="1784619763292"></script>

PELITA Vocational Program Batch IV: Harita Nickel Prepares 40 Obi Island Youths as Certified Heavy Equipment Operators

As a material used in battery manufacturing, nickel is a crucial mineral in the global energy transition towards a low-emission economy. At the same time, nickel mining activities can contribute to emissions and potentially affect biodiversity in the areas surrounding operations. To strengthen the management of these risks, Harita Nickel, as a responsible and integrated nickel mining and processing company, has adopted Landscape Level Nature Risk Assessment (LNRA) in its operational practices.
LNRA is an environmental assessment method that helps companies identify and manage biodiversity risks comprehensively, not only limited to operational areas, but also covering surrounding ecosystems. Through the implementation of LNRA, conservation efforts can be planned more holistically.
This approach is the focus of a study conducted by the Harita Nickel Sustainability team regarding the implementation of LNRA within the company. The result of the research titled “<a href="https://www.atlantis-press.com/proceedings/icose-25/126019686">Integrating Biodiversity in Mining: From Conceptual to Operational</a>” was published as a proceedings article in the International Conference on Sustainable Energy (ICoSE) 2025 in Atlantis Highlights in Sustainable Development (Atlantis Press).
Harita Nickel’s Sustainability Manager, as well as the research team leader, Klaus Oberbauer, explained that this study examined internal understanding of LNRA implementation through a qualitative approach. “We conducted semi-structured interviews with nine Harita Nickel employees who were selected based on their direct involvement in the implementation of LNRA in operational activities,” he said.&nbsp;
The interview data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach, through initial coding to identify patterns, followed by determining the main themes and grouping the data into conceptual categories.
The results of the study show that Harita Nickel employees across levels and functions understand the application of LNRA as a framework that influences internal planning and collaboration in biodiversity management. The study also highlights areas for improvement so that the implementation of LNRA at the operational level can be further integrated into daily practices.
“The main findings show a strong understanding of the importance of LNRA implementation across various functions and levels within the company. LNRA is perceived as a strategic tool to help companies understand biodiversity risks comprehensively,” Klaus explained.&nbsp;
In its implementation, challenges at the operational level are addressed through continuous education and training, as well as structured and regular discussions between relevant departments, as part of efforts to strengthen the application of LNRA in daily operational practices.
Harita Nickel's commitment to biodiversity conservation does not stop at policies and implementation plans alone. This commitment needs to be tested, evaluated, and accounted for openly. On that basis, the company conducted an LNRA implementation study to document its performance, which was then published through an international scientific forum as a form of transparency and accountability.<script src="https://cdn.flmngr.com/widgets.js?apiKey=FLMNFLMN" data-ts="1784692734362"></script>

Managing Biodiversity Risks in Nickel Mining through the LNRA Approach

Harita Nickel organized an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) workshop as part of the 2026 National OHS Month, carrying the theme “Transforming OHS Culture: Understanding Risks, Controlling Hazards, and Leading Safe and Responsible Work Behavior.” The workshop was attended by Harita Nickel’s management teams from all business units operating on Obi Island.
During the session, participants were encouraged to understand that workplace safety cannot be assessed solely through statistical indicators such as minor accident rates. Fahmi Munsah Ismail, one of the speakers, explained that seemingly positive safety statistics often create a false sense of security, while the potential for fatal risks remains high if operational risk controls are not implemented with discipline.
He emphasized that workplace safety should not be positioned as the responsibility of a single function. In daily operations, those who determine work planning, work methods, and resource allocation have direct control over risks in the field.
<img class="img-fluid" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/workshop%20bk3n%202026_2_1.jpg" width="1000" height="667" data-fm="true">
“Safety is not only the responsibility of the Safety Department; it is the responsibility and accountability of every worker and supervisor,” he stated.
According to Fahmi, supervisors play a crucial role as risk controllers on site. Decisions made in daily activities, especially under pressure from targets and time constraints, greatly influence whether work can be carried out safely. Therefore, safety accountability cannot be delegated to others.
In addition to technical OHS aspects, the workshop also addressed the role of leadership in shaping safe work behavior. Hari Setyowibowo, a psychologist from Padjadjaran University (UNPAD), explained that safety systems and procedures will not be effective without leadership that can influence team attitudes and behavior.
“In the context of culture, rules and systems alone are not enough. Behavioral change occurs largely through the role of a leader,” he said.
He further explained that effective leadership is not solely determined by position, but by the ability to lead by example, build trust, and communicate consistently. This approach encourages workers not merely to comply with safety rules, but to develop an internal commitment to workplace safety.
The impact of this understanding was directly felt by workshop participants. Syarif Yadifatullah, OHS Superintendent of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, stated that the workshop was highly relevant to the challenges of implementing OHS practices in the field.
“This workshop made us realize how decisive the role of leaders is. The safety culture has actually existed, but it has not been implemented consistently,” he said.
<img class="img-fluid n1ed--selected" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/workshop%20bk3n%202026_3_1.jpg" width="1000" height="563" data-fm="true">
According to Syarif, one of the main challenges is ensuring that every work instruction is properly executed on site. He emphasized that verification and follow-up processes are key to preventing workplace accidents.
Through this workshop, Harita Nickel aims to align understanding across its business units that workplace safety is an integral part of operational responsibility and leadership. The activity forms part of the company’s commitment to continuously strengthening its OHS culture transformation, in line with the spirit of #SatuHaritaSalingMenjaga.

Harita Nickel Holds National OHS Workshop 2026 to Strengthen Workplace Safety Culture

Harita Nickel's commitment to legal compliance is reflected in the Gold Reward certificate from the Indonesian National Police (Polri) for its National Vital Object (Obvitnas) security audit. This security audit certification is the first to be awarded to a company operating a National Vital Object in North Maluku, specifically on Obi Island, South Halmahera.
The certification represents official recognition that the company’s security system has been properly managed. This indicates that security management is implemented in a structured, risk-based manner and meets national standards to protect assets, operations, and the safety of all personnel within the National Vital Object area.
The award was presented to Harita Nickel by the Head of the Security Maintenance Agency of the Indonesian National Police in Jakarta on Monday, 15 December 2025. The award was received by Harita Nickel's Security Manager, John F. Batubara, during the official National Vital Object Security Audit Certification ceremony.
Based on the National Police audit, Harita Nickel was deemed successful in implementing a security system that meets standards, achieving a compliance score of 88.05%, which falls under the Gold Reward category. For Harita Nickel, implementing a robust security system is fundamental to maintaining the operational sustainability of the company as a National Vital Object operator.&nbsp;
<img class="img-fluid n1ed--selected" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Audit%20SMP%20Polri%202_1.jpg" width="1280" height="960" data-fm="true">
John explained that the security audit certification is not merely about fulfilling regulatory requirements but also serves as a foundation for building a stronger security system. “This approach encourages security practices that are no longer just reactive, but planned, documented, and measurable. Through this system, all security processes, from risk identification to continuous improvement, are carried out consistently and systematically, in line with the company’s operational dynamics,” he said.
Not just for internal security, effective implementation of a standardized security system also plays an important role in strengthening stakeholder confidence. Measurable and standardized security practices help ensure operational continuity while supporting regional stability within the operational area.
“Companies that hold security audit certification are more trusted by stakeholders, including the government, business partners, investors, and the community. Such certification demonstrates a strong commitment to security and safety, while also facilitating coordination with the Indonesian National Armed Forces and the Indonesian National Police,” John said.
As the first recipient of a Gold-category security audit certification in North Maluku, Harita Nickel views this achievement not as an endpoint, but as part of a continuous improvement process. By strengthening security systems that reflect national standards, the company remains committed to safeguarding operational security as a key pillar of responsible mineral mining and processing.

First in North Maluku, Harita Nickel Receives Gold Audit Certification for National Vital Object Security

Harita Nickel, an integrated nickel mining and processing company, has reaffirmed its commitment to responsible mining practices by winning two MineXcellence awards. These awards are presented by the Society of Renewable Energy (SRE) to mining companies that are recognized for their consistent innovation, efficiency, and social and environmental sustainability.
At the MineXcellence event held in Jakarta on Thursday, 8 January 2025, Harita Nickel won 1st place (Mining Champion) in the Local Community Empowerment for Mining Workforce category. The award was given in recognition of the success of the Youth Skills and Competency Improvement Program (PELITA), which was deemed capable of providing access to capacity building and sustainable employment opportunities for communities around the operational area.
The PELITA program is a vocational initiative by Harita Nickel designed to equip local youth with skills needed by the mining industry. Training covers heavy equipment operation and Mandarin language proficiency, in an effort to improve the competitiveness of the local workforce and expand community involvement in the nickel industry value chain.
In addition, Harita Nickel also achieved 2nd place (Mining Master) in the category of Innovation and Post-Mining Land Rehabilitation through the use of nickel slag as a soil conditioner. This innovation utilizes the residuals from the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) process to support reclamation and revegetation activities, thereby providing added value while reducing the environmental impact of mining activities.
The MineXcellence award was received by Harita Nickel's Vice President of Environmental Green Mining, Retno Dewi Handayani. She conveyed that this achievement reflects the company's commitment to integrating community empowerment and sustainable environmental management.
<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/base64/page_1770535310_UnPjYCjxZF.jpeg" width="1080" height="720">
"This award is not the ultimate goal, but rather a sign that the steps we have taken so far are on the right track. Harita Nickel will continue to refine its approach to resource management, develop shared value with the communities surrounding its operational areas, and carry out responsible nickel mining and processing practices," said Retno.
On the same occasion, Harita Nickel's Health and Education Supervisor, Ragil Pardiantoro, together with Education Foreman, Siti Nur Artina, also presented various human resource development initiatives carried out by the company. <img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/base64/page_1770535310_dAsUqeWd8g.jpeg" width="1080" height="720">
"This award is the result of our collaboration with the community. Going forward, Harita Nickel will continue to develop local talent, especially from Obi Island, so that they can grow and empower themselves alongside the industry," said Ragil.
Through this achievement, Harita Nickel emphasizes that responsible mining practices are built through a balance between environmental protection and strengthening the capacity of local communities. The MineXcellence award reflects the company's commitment to bringing long-term positive impacts to surrounding communities while supporting the sustainability of the national mining industry.

Harita Nickel Wins Two MineXcellence Awards for People Empowerment and Land Rehabilitation Innovation Programs

The commitment to responsible nickel mining and downstreaming requires more than just slogans; it requires proven technical standards. Responding to this challenge, Harita Nickel has taken on a strategic role in formulating Indonesian National Standards (SNI) related to the utilization of nickel slag, which is now converted into useful materials for environmental restoration, as outlined in SNI 9420:2025. This standard serves as a reference for the safe, measurable, and consistent utilization of slag, while promoting a circular economy approach in post-mining activities.
This step affirms the company's position not only as a nickel producer, but also as a party that encourages the implementation of responsible environmental management practices in order to provide a long-term positive impact on the ecosystem and communities around its operational area on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku.
Nickel slag, a solid material left over from the smelting process using Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology, has been a major consideration in environmental management. Harita Nickel has consistently utilized this slag as a soil conditioner to support post-mining land reclamation and revegetation.
The results are evident: former mining land can be replanted faster, accelerating ecosystem recovery and supporting revegetation and land function restoration efforts for local communities surrounding the mining area.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/base64/page_1770532095_2TNtvTOcxR.jpeg" width="1080" height="720">
<figcaption>Plants growing on post-mining land using nickel slag–based planting media</figcaption>
</figure>
However, in order for these good practices to be widely and safely adopted, standard references are needed. This is where Insan Harita Nickel plays a vital role. Collaborating with the National Standardization Agency (BSN), experts from Harita Nickel are actively involved in Technical Committee 13-05 on Mineral and Coal Mining Environmental Protection.
Harita Nickel's HSE Director, Tonny Gultom, who is a member of the SNI Formulation Technical Committee, emphasized that the presence of this standard is crucial to create uniformity in the quality of environmental management in the national nickel industry.
"The nickel slag standard provides a harmonized technical reference for industry practitioners. Thus, the utilization of slag in the field has clear, safe, and scientifically and regulatory accountable standards," Tonny explained.
In addition to Tonny, Harita Nickel's Executive Vice President of Environmental Affairs, Iwan Syahroni, also participated as a member of the technical committee, strengthening industry representation in the formulation of this policy.
Technical input also came from Harita Nickel's Vice President of Environmental Green Mining, Retno Dewi Handayani, who served as the SNI draft's conceptualizer. According to Retno, Harita Nickel's empirical experience in the field served as important data in drafting these regulations.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/base64/page_1770532095_UZQ28qvrhF.jpeg" width="1080" height="720">
<figcaption>Retno Dewi Handayani, Vice President Environmental Green Mining at Harita Nickel, highlights the company’s role in formulating SNI 9420:2025 on the utilization of nickel slag for post-mining environmental restoration.</figcaption>
</figure>
"Our experience in utilizing slag as a soil conditioner for reclamation served as the main reference. The goal is for the resulting national standard to be truly relevant, workable, and ensure long-term environmental safety," said Retno.
The publication of this national standard document is expected to serve as a guideline for the entire nickel industry in managing processing residues wisely. Harita Nickel's active participation in the drafting of this national standard is clear evidence of the company's dedication to not only complying with regulations but also proactively creating new standards in environmental protection and the empowerment of areas surrounding the mine.

Harita Nickel Promotes the Creation of a National Standard for the Utilization of Slag for Reclamation

In commemoration of the 2026 National Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Month, Harita Nickel has partnered with communities within its operational area on Obi Island, South Halmahera, to strengthen the culture of safety and health through various concrete actions, ranging from free health check-ups to safety education programs.
This initiative aligns with the theme of the 2026 National OSH Month, “Building a Professional, Reliable, and Collaborative National OSH Management Ecosystem.” The series of activities was carried out through community service programs involving employees, local residents, and educational institutions as part of efforts to build shared awareness of the importance of safety and health.
One of the activities took place in Kawasi Village on January 24, 2026. The event began with a healthy walk and group exercise involving Harita Nickel employees and local residents. Harita Nickel’s Technical Support Manager, Dian Kristiyanto, emphasized that occupational safety and health must be built as a collective culture. According to him, the series of community service activities during National OSH Month serves as a platform to encourage the adoption of healthy lifestyles and to strengthen safety culture within the community. “At Harita Nickel, the spirit of OSH is not only implemented in the workplace, but we also bring it into the community as a manifestation of our One Harita, Caring for Each Other commitment,” he said.
In addition to Kawasi Village, community service activities in commemoration of National OSH Month were also conducted in Tabuji Hamlet, Baru Village, Obi District, through free health check-up services. Dozens of residents enthusiastically visited the health service post, which was staffed by Harita Nickel doctors and medical teams. These health services are not limited to OSH Month, but are routinely carried out through the Doctor Harita Share program.

The benefits of the activities were directly felt by the community. One of the health service recipients, Yubelina Colling, expressed her appreciation for the free health check-up program organized by the company, as it helps residents become more aware of their health conditions. “I hope the community will become more aware of the importance of monitoring their health and be willing to come for check-ups when activities like this are held again in the future,” she said.
Appreciation was also conveyed by Imel Lumamuly Tuta, a teacher in Kawasi Village. She noted that the community service activities have had a positive impact on both residents and students by increasing knowledge, fostering learning enthusiasm, and encouraging students to be more concerned about health and safety.
Chairman of the 2026 National OSH Month Committee at Harita Nickel, Muhammad Fauzi, explained that in addition to community-based activities, the company also commemorates National OSH Month internally through various competitions, socialization programs, and workplace safety campaigns. “All of these initiatives aim to strengthen the understanding and implementation of OSH across all operational lines,” he explained.
Through continuous collaboration with communities and various stakeholders, Harita Nickel remains committed to supporting the creation of a strong occupational safety and health culture. These efforts are expected to deliver tangible benefits to the community while also supporting the creation of a safe, healthy, and sustainably productive working environment.
