The turn of the year is a special moment for thousands of Harita employees from various business units at the Obi Island Site. Amidst a busy and dynamic work schedule, New Year's Eve is used as an opportunity to pause for a moment, gather together, and close out 2025 in an atmosphere of togetherness with the spirit of "Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga” (One Harita, Looking After Each Other).

At PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), the New Year celebration coincided with the company's decade-long journey. With the theme "One Decade, MSP Blue Growing Stronger," the togetherness across departments became a strong symbol of the sense of belonging that has grown and been maintained over time.

A similar spirit was also felt by Harita employees in the Living Quarter area of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL). With a carnival and night market concept, the celebration was designed to be more intimate and friendly. Various game stalls, snacks, and light entertainment created a warm atmosphere, complemented by an entertainment stage featuring music, dance, and stand-up comedy as a showcase for employee talent.

Meanwhile, PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) hosted Herophoria Fest 2026 under the theme “Tunevolution (Environmental & Sustainability Collaboration).” The festival provided an open and inclusive space for Insan Harita to actively participate in a wide range of performances, ranging from traditional dances, fashion shows, to music and DJ performances. Enthusiasm and creative freedom colored the celebrations welcoming the new year.

On the occasion, Deputy Technical Support of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel, Agung Aribowo, expressed his appreciation for the company’s achievements throughout 2025. Management extended its gratitude to all Insan Harita for their active contributions to the company’s journey over the past year.

Entering 2026, Agung encouraged all Insan Harita to continue strengthening safety performance through collaboration, mutual support, and a shared commitment to continuous improvement. He emphasized that togetherness and a culture of caring for one another are key to navigating future challenges.

The celebration was also lively at the Nirwana Field of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) through Lojisoundfest, which was held forthe fourth consecutive year. Under the theme “Gemuruh Nusantara, Semangat Timur Membara” (The Roar of the Archipelago, the Spirit of the East Ablaze), the event featured musical performances representing the cultural diversity of the archipelago, ranging from Javanese koplo songs by North Java Entertainment to popular hits from Eastern Indonesia presented by Willy Sopacua and Glen Sebastian. The enthusiasm of Insan Harita filled the event area until New Year's Eve.

Throughout the series of celebrations across Harita Nickel’s business units, management also invited all Insan Harita to offer prayers and sympathy for those affected by natural disasters in Aceh and Sumatra. Harita Nickel’s Director of Operations, Younsel Evand Roos, stated that the New Year celebration on Obi Island was carried out with deep empathy amid the grief experienced by flood victims in Aceh and Sumatra.

"This moment serves as a reminder to all of us that togetherness is not only celebrated in joy but also manifested through empathy and care. The spirit of 'Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga' continues to be an important value in Harita Nickel's journey," he said.

The New Year celebration at the Obi Island Site closed 2025 with a warm and meaningful impression. Behind the festivities, one shared value stood out: togetherness as the foundation for the journey ahead. With the spirit of “Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga,” Insan Harita step into 2026 with the confidence that challenges will be lighter when faced together.

Welcoming 2026, Insan Harita Celebrates Togetherness in the Spirit of "Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga"

Harita Nickel once again participated in the Grand Summit UI SDGs 2025, the closing event of the UI SDGs Summit series organized by the Student Executive Board of the University of Indonesia. In this forum, Harita Nickel's Executive Vice President for Environmental Affairs, Iwan Syahroni, explained the company's approach to implementing responsible integrated nickel mining and processing practices.

Previously, Harita Nickel also contributed technical expertise to a workshop session for an essay competition themed "Zero Waste for a Sustainable Future." This involvement reflects the company's commitment to sharing scientific perspectives on environmental issues with the younger generation.

In his presentation, Iwan provided a comprehensive overview of Harita Nickel's operations on Obi Island, which are based on the principles of responsible mining. "Harita Nickel is committed to integrating environmental management, energy efficiency, occupational safety, and social responsibility into our entire nickel mining and processing value chain," he said.

Iwan discussed Harita Nickel's integrated operational process on Obi Island, starting from ferronickel processing using Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology to Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) processing using High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL). This explanation provides context on the role of integrated operations in supporting the stainless steel and electric vehicle battery supply chains, as well as driving the global energy transition agenda.

Innovation in byproducts management

The main highlight of this session was the company's strategy in managing processing byproducts so that they can be reused. Iwan explained that Harita Nickel processes nickel slag from the RKEF smelter process into value-added materials.

"We utilize nickel slag for various purposes, from making reef cubes for coral reef growth media and construction materials to soil conditioners for post-mining reclamation," he added.

In addition, byproducts from the HPAL refinery process are managed through the Dry Stack Tailing Facility (DSTF). This facility manages byproducts in the form of dry cake (solid/dry), rather than slurry (liquid), which are then placed in a special placement area that is safe and can be rehabilitated back into green land.

Closing the session, Iwan emphasized the land rehabilitation and biodiversity conservation strategies carried out through scientific approaches and academic collaboration. Harita Nickel's participation in this forum is expected to shape an objective public perception that Indonesia's nickel industry can be managed transparently, based on science, and contribute positively to national and global development.

Harita Nickel Presents Responsible Mining Practices at the UI SDGs 2025 Grand Summit

As Indonesia's nickel industry grows stronger and downstreaming gains momentum, the need to develop and improve nickel smelter operating standards continues to increase. Harita Nickel, as an integrated nickel mining and processing company, emphasizes that national industrial growth must be accompanied by increasingly holistic occupational safety standards to ensure sustainable downstreaming.

This message was conveyed by Supriyanto Suwarno, Harita Nickel’s Operational Health and Safety (OHS) & Management System Manager, during an exclusive discussion among nickel industry stakeholders held by the Indonesian Nickel Industry Forum (FINI) together with DSS Sustainable Solutions (dss+).

Through his presentation at the event titled "Transforming Indonesia's Smelting Industry," Supriyanto explained that the measures implemented by Harita Nickel to strengthen safety standards at the company's smelter refer to applicable regulations and reinforce a risk-based approach at the operational level.

"We implement a safety system that not only focuses on compliance, but also on a risk-based approach and strengthening the overall process. With increasingly complex smelter technology, safety must be managed in a measurable and comprehensive manner," he explained.

He added that safety reinforcement is built based on an integrated cross-functional OHS framework within the organization and involves stakeholders. Harita Nickel's OHS program covers three main aspects, namely operational activities, community, and stakeholders.

"The scope of our OHS program not only covers risk control in operational areas, but also the health and safety of the surrounding community, emergency management, and collaboration with stakeholders to maintain safety standards throughout the company's ecosystem," said Supriyanto.

Supriyanto concluded his presentation by emphasizing that the success of the smelter industry in Indonesia is highly dependent on strong partnerships and shared commitment among industry players, the government, industry associations, academics, the community, and global partners.

"Going forward, synergy with all stakeholders will be key in developing a well-standardized OHS framework. This begins with openness to knowledge sharing, strengthening safety regulations, and building local competencies so that Indonesia's smelter industry can grow with higher standards that are relevant to global needs," he concluded.

The gathering served as a collective moment to close the year while reaffirming the company’s commitment to fostering a safe and caring work environment.

In a solemn atmosphere, Insan Harita from across departments and business units came together to offer prayers as an expression of gratitude for the guidance and protection experienced throughout the year. The moment also provided space to pause, reflect on the journey undertaken, and nurture shared hopes that the steps ahead will be taken with greater mindfulness, mutual care, and responsibility.

Executive Business Control of Harita Nickel, Topan Prasetyo, noted that 2025 brought valuable lessons for everyone within the organization. “We all felt that 2025 was not an easy year. Through the processes we went through together, we learned that achievement is not measured solely by outcomes, but also by how we support and look out for one another,” he said.

According to Topan, the theme “Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga” serves as an important reminder amid daily work demands and operational pressures. “Through this prayer and reflection session, we took a moment to be grateful for what we have been through, while also offering our hopes that moving forward we are granted safety, good health, and an increasingly safe and caring work environment,” he added.

Echoing this sentiment, Deputy Department Head of Technical Support at Harita Nickel, Agung Aribowo, emphasized that day-to-day operations, particularly in the field, require constant vigilance and shared responsibility. “In our daily activities, we are often faced with situations that demand resilience, caution, and care, whether related to the environment, social aspects, or occupational health and safety,” he explained.

He further added that Harita Nickel’s strength lies in simple practices carried out consistently. “Care demonstrated through small actions, such as reminding and looking out for one another, reflects the strong sense of togetherness we continue to build as one big family,” he said.

The theme “Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga” became the common thread throughout the event. The presence of management representatives, department and business unit leaders, as well as Insan Harita from various operational areas, reinforced the spirit of unity and shared commitment.

Understanding Obi Island’s Environment: The Sea, Local Communities, and the Future of Indonesia’s Nickel Resources

The sea is the lifeblood of coastal communities in Obi Island, North Maluku. It serves as a source of livelihood, a nurturing environment for ecosystem growth, and a shared space where community life meets industrial activities. In recent years, the island has emerged as a focal point of attention amid intersecting interests, situated between the rising global demand for nickel to support the energy transition and growing public concern over its environmental impact.

As different narratives continue to unfold, it is crucial to examine the state of Obi’s marine environment in its entirety. This article aims to provide a brief summary of the island’s ecological landscape, local communities, and environmental management, guided by routine monitoring, operational data, and the social dynamics observed on the ground.

Coral Reefs and the “New Homes” on the Seafloor

Marine restoration has attracted significant focus as one of the key initiatives in environmental conservation. In several parts of Obi Island waters, hollow cube structures known as reef cubes have been deployed on the seafloor to help restore the ecosystem.

Independent monitoring has recorded the following developments:

• 109 species of coral reef fish from 22 families have been sighted within the restoration zone.

• Coral growth rates between 0.93 and 6.64 cm over a two-year span.

• The reef cubes have transformed into new habitat for species ranging from juvenile fish to adult groupers.

The restoration is not intended to substitute natural processes; it is implemented incrementally with a measured approach to support ecological recovery.

Water and Waste Management: Transparency and Control System

Water and waste management has always been one of the most discussed topics whenever mining activities come under public scrutiny. In Obi, several mechanisms work in parallel to preserve water quality and mitigate sedimentation risks.

58 Settling Ponds to Mitigate Sedimentation

Runoff from the operational area is processed through 58 settling ponds to let sediment settle prior to release. This is a critical step to prevent solid particles from entering water bodies.

Real-Time Monitoring through SPARING

Water quality is monitored automatically through the SPARING system (under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry). Data collected from the monitoring instruments are transmitted directly to the government’s data center, ensuring they can be audited at any time.

Land-based Tailings Management, Zero Ocean Disposal

Harita Nickel does not implement the Deep-Sea Tailings Placement (DSTP) method. Instead, all tailings are processed through a Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF):

• Utilizes a dewatering-based system

• Incorporates multiple protective layers

• Designed to prevent seepage

International-Standard Sustainability Audit

Harita Nickel undergoes the IRMA (Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance) audit, a global mining standard comprising over 400 indicators. The audit involves independent verification, ensuring standardized practices and transparency in environmental management.

Fishing Communities and the Coastal Economy: Indicators of Ocean Health

Ocean health extends beyond marine life and ecosystem; it is also reflected in the socioeconomic realities of coastal communities. Coastal fishing activities often serve as an early indicator of aquatic environmental change.

Field observations report:

• Unchanged fishing patterns; fishermen consistently follow their traditional fishing routes

• Fish catch volumes (including commercially important species such as grouper, rabbitfish, and squid) remain stable

• Effective marketing support through the SUTAN program, allowing tens of tons of fishermen’s catch reach the market

The everyday practices of coastal communities are an integral part of Obi’s ecological balance, affirming the enduring role of the sea as their primary source of livelihood.

Obi Island, Nickel, and the Future of Socio-Environmental System

Obi Island stands as one of the principal hubs of Indonesia’s nickel downstream industry. Despite its economic momentum, the island faces a significant challenge in balancing the rising global demands to advance the energy transition with the need to preserve the ecosystem and the well-being of coastal communities.

The data and on-site observations reveal:

The productivity of Obi Island waters is well-preserved

Coral reef restoration outcomes show a sustained path to recovery

Tailings and water management adheres to international standards

Fishermen continue their everyday routines without any disruption

The State of Obi Island Waters and the Harita Nickel’s Environmental Management

Harita Nickel has recorded a significant milestone in reducing stunting within its operational area. Through the Soligi Zero Stunting program, 21 out of 25 children in Soligi Village, Obi Island, South Halmahera, have successfully overcome stunting and shown improvement in their nutritional status.

This achievement, recorded as of mid-2025, confirms the effectiveness of an integrated approach involving the company and relevant stakeholders in efforts to reduce stunting rates in a sustainable manner.

Harita Nickel Community Development Manager Broto Suworso explained that the Soligi Zero Stunting program has been running since 2022, combining nutritional interventions, health education, and strengthening community health services. "This success is the result of teamwork. We believe that children's health is an important foundation for a stronger and more prosperous future," he said.

The Soligi Zero Stunting Program includes the provision of supplementary food (PMT) based on local food sources, training for community health center (Posyandu) workers, the construction of auxiliary health centers (PUSTU), and the provision of communal clean water wells. All activities are carried out in a participatory manner, involving the community as the main agents of change.

The spearhead of this program's implementation is the Soligi Village posyandu cadres, who play a direct role in assisting families and monitoring child growth and development. Murni, one of the posyandu workers and program initiators, explained that posyandu activities are carried out regularly every month through weighing, measuring children, and distributing supplementary food.

“We also proactively visit the homes of toddlers at risk of stunting and provide counseling to mothers so that they pay attention to their children's nutrition and regularly check their pregnancies at the health center," she said.

"We also proactively visit the homes of toddlers at risk of stunting and provide counseling to mothers to pay attention to their children's nutrition and regularly check their pregnancies at the health center," said Murni. According to her, the most noticeable change is the decrease in the number of children with stunting and malnutrition, from 25 children to now only 4 children. "Our hope is that next year it will be zero, and the children of Soligi will grow up healthier," she emphasized.

In addition to strengthening basic health services, this program also builds community capacity. A total of 13 posyandu workers have been trained in child growth and development monitoring, 354 children have received assistance, and more than 300 supplementary food packages have been distributed to support improvements in family nutrition.

For its impact and innovation, the Soligi Zero Stunting program won the 2025 Subroto Award from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in the category of Most Innovative Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM) for Mineral Commodities in the field of Health. This award recognizes Harita Nickel's contribution to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the national policy aimed at accelerating the reduction of stunting.

The sustainability of the program is also a key focus. The village government is committed to allocating funds for PUSTU operations and maintenance of clean water facilities. At the same time, PUSTU is being developed as an integrated health service center, complete with a child-friendly park and a family medicinal garden (TOGA).

Harita Nickel also implements stunting-reduction programs in other villages surrounding its operational area on Obi Island, in collaboration with local government and community stakeholders.

Through the success of Soligi Zero Stunting, Harita Nickel has demonstrated that a collaborative, community-based approach can be an effective solution in overcoming stunting in remote areas.

From Soligi, Harita Nickel Builds New Hope for a Stunting-Free Obi Generation

In commemoration of National Health Day 2025, Harita Nickel brought free medical services directly to residents of Air Mangga Village and Tabuji Hamlet on 15 December 2025. This initiative reflects the company’s commitment to improving the quality of life in communities surrounding its operational areas through preventive and promotive health programs.

The activity aligns with the Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-Being, and Harita Nickel’s sustainability policy, which places community health as a key foundation for inclusive and resilient social development.

In addition to free health services, the program also included Basic Life Support (BLS) and emergency response training.
The free health services included blood pressure checks, basic medical examinations, health consultations, and health education. The program reached around 300 residents from Air Mangga Village and Tabuji Hamlet, including health volunteers, village officials, community leaders, and youth representatives.

High community participation reflected the strong enthusiasm of residents throughout the activity. One resident of Air Mangga Village, Jelny Gusu, shared that the training and health checks provided valuable knowledge she had never received before.

“Through this training, we learned how to help someone who faints, how to handle bleeding, and even how to respond to broken bones. This is very important because if an accident happens, we already have the knowledge to help,” she said.

Cross-sector collaboration was a key strength of the program. Head of Laiwui Community Health Center, Sumarni Malang, emphasized that partnerships between companies, healthcare workers, and local governments play an important role in strengthening health services at the village level.

“This activity strongly supports our ongoing preventive and promotive health efforts. Collaboration with Harita Nickel has a real impact on the community, especially in early disease detection and improving health awareness,” she said.

The Head of the South Halmahera District Health Office, Asia Hasjim, expressed her appreciation for the free medical examinations and treatment provided in the mining area. She hopes that such activities can be increased and expanded in scope in 2026 so that efforts to prevent various diseases can be carried out more accurately and comprehensively.

Similar appreciation was also expressed by the Head of Air Mangga Village, Fransiskus Salauwe. "The community's response has been very positive. We hope that activities like this will not stop at just one moment, but can be sustained and further strengthen health services in the village," he said.

Through this initiative, Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to working closely with healthcare workers, local governments, and communities in strengthening promotional and preventive services and building an inclusive health ecosystem around the company's operational areas.
