The courtyard of the multipurpose hall in the new Kawasi settlement was filled with laughter and excitement that morning. Hundreds of students, from elementary to senior high school levels, from Kawasi and Soligi villages mingled with Harita Nickel employees before setting off together toward the tree-planting site.
Along the roadside, planting holes had already been prepared alongside rows of sea pine and ketapang kencana saplings, as well as piles of KUSO, an organic fertilizer produced from food waste collected from Harita Nickel’s cafeterias. The scene—a blend of generations and professions working side by side—captured the spirit of the grand finale of the World Environment Day 2026 celebration on Obi Island on Saturday (June 6).
Planting hundreds of trees was more than a ceremonial activity. It represented a tangible commitment to safeguarding environmental sustainability through collective action.
Harita Nickel Environmental Superintendent Indra Maizar described the initiative as a form of social investment.
“Involving students is aimed at fostering environmental awareness from an early age,” he said.
A total of 530 saplings were planted as part of the program. The selected species, including sea pine and ketapang kencana, were chosen for their suitability in supporting coastal ecosystems while providing shade and greenery for the surrounding area. The tree-planting effort was also complemented by a series of community-focused activities.
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">From Coastal Cleanups to Village Regulations</h2>
The greening initiative at the heart of the new Kawasi settlement marked the culmination of a broader series of World Environment Day activities.
The celebration began with a coastal cleanup along Kawasi’s shoreline, where employees and residents worked side by side to collect and sort waste scattered across the beach.
“It’s encouraging to see the coastline clean again. With the village regulation in place, people are becoming more aware that waste management is a shared responsibility,” said Wildon Marsan Totonunu Leader of Waste Management Center Kawasi Village who joined the cleanup effort.
To ensure a lasting impact, the collaboration was strengthened through the signing of a draft village regulation on waste management. The regulation is expected to reinforce the sustainability of the Kawasi Berseri (Clean, Healthy and Independent Kawasi) program, a joint initiative between Harita Nickel and the Kawasi Village Administration aimed at promoting sustainable waste management practices.

&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Young People at the Forefront of Change</h2>
While the village regulation provides a legal foundation, education serves as an investment in the future.
Through the “Torang Jaga Kawasi, Aksi Nyata untuk Obi” (Protecting Kawasi, Real Action for Obi) campaign, hundreds of students participated in environmental education sessions covering topics ranging from waste management and environmental cleanliness to circular economy principles.
Students learned how organic waste can be transformed into KUSO fertilizer and how plastic waste can be processed into liquid fuel through pyrolysis technology.
“I’m happy to be part of this activity. I just learned that food waste can be turned into fertilizer and that used items can have value again if we know how to reuse them,” said Gilang Muhammad, a junior high school student from Soligi Village.
Bambang Bakir, head of community welfare affairs for the Kawasi Village Administration, emphasized the importance of instilling environmental values from an early age.
“A clean environment is not created overnight. Children must become pioneers who encourage their families and communities to care for nature,” he said.
Echoing the sentiment, Harita Nickel Community Development Manager Broto Suwarso said sustainability can only be achieved through a balance between economic growth, environmental stewardship and human development.
“Protecting the environment is a shared responsibility. Simple habits such as sorting waste can create a significant impact when practiced consistently by young people, who will become the future agents of change for Obi,” Broto said.
The 2026 World Environment Day celebration offered a compelling example of how industrial operations and environmental conservation can go hand in hand. Through collaboration, education and concrete action that brings people closer to nature, Harita Nickel and local communities are laying a strong foundation for a greener, healthier and more sustainable future for Obi Island.

Torang Jaga Kawasi: Harita Employees and Local Youth Join Forces to Green Obi

Building Indonesia’s ESG Standards: Locally Relevant, Globally Credible

Obi Island, North Maluku – In recent years, Obi Island has drawn significant national and international attention. As a hub for integrated nickel downstream processing, the island is often associated with two contrasting narratives: on one hand, as a driver of economic growth and the global energy transition; on the other, as an industry perceived to have environmental impacts. Amid these competing narratives, the public deserves a comprehensive picture based on verified and up-to-date facts. This article presents findings from independent observations, environmental management data, and transparency measures implemented by Harita Nickel. Perkumpulan Telapak, a non-governmental organization focused on sustainability since 1997, conducted an observation in June 2025 together with a research team from the University of Indonesia (UI). Their assessment recorded an important finding that has rarely received media attention: “Overall, the waters of Kawasi remain in good condition. Telapak did not find any changes in water quality or ecological damage caused by the company’s activities.” (<a href="https://www.telapak.org/ringkasan-awal-laporan-observasi-lapangan-praktik-pertambangan-berkelanjutan-harita-nickel/">Telapak Environmental Observation Report, June 2025</a>) The report also highlighted that fishermen around Kawasi and Soligi continue to operate normally and maintain productive catches. The community’s routine fishing activities provide tangible evidence that local water quality continues to support marine ecosystems.

<h2 dir="ltr">Water Management Facts</h2>
One of the most frequently discussed issues is mine water management. Since the beginning of its operations, Harita Nickel has established an integrated water management system designed to ensure that water returned to the environment meets applicable quality standards.
The company currently operates 58 settling ponds that function to clarify runoff water (rainwater that passes through mining areas) before it is discharged into the environment. Two major ponds Tuguraci (43 hectares with 11 compartments) and Bunaken (20 hectares with 5 compartments)—are capable of storing millions of cubic meters of water. At these facilities, water is treated using coagulant and flocculant technologies to ensure suspended particles settle effectively.
What distinguishes Harita Nickel’s approach is its strict separation principle: no drainage channels, sedimentation ponds, or discharge systems intersect with natural drinking water sources or rivers. This principle reflects the company’s commitment to ensuring that mining infrastructure does not interfere with community water resources.
To ensure transparency, Harita Nickel is also connected to SPARING (Continuous and Online Industrial Wastewater Quality Monitoring System). This system is directly integrated with Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). Water quality data at final discharge outlets can be monitored by regulators in real time, ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
&nbsp;
“Transparency is not merely about publishing annual reports. Transparency means providing regulators with real-time access to monitor operational aspects of water management. That is exactly what we do through SPARING.”
(Tonny Gultom, HSE Director, Harita Nickel)
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Tailings Management Facts</h2>
When discussing water and environmental management, one question frequently arises: Does Harita dispose of tailings into the ocean? This allegation is often raised. What are the facts? Harita Nickel does not practice Deep Sea Tailings Placement (DSTP). All tailings are managed on land through a Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF), which utilizes multiple protective layers, including geomembranes and vertical drainage systems, to minimize environmental risks.
In its High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) process, Harita Nickel applies a proprietary methodology developed with technical partners to reduce the formation of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+). This innovation was first disclosed in the company’s 2023 Sustainability Report and continues to be refined. Third-party studies have shown that the resulting tailings are non-explosive, non-flammable, non-reactive, non-corrosive, and non-toxic according to applicable LC50 and LD50 standards.
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Facts About Fish and Fishermen in Obi</h2>
A healthy environment should provide tangible benefits to local communities. Since 2023, Harita Nickel has regularly organized the Obi Fishing Tournament. In 2025, the event attracted 135 participants and resulted in catches of large fish species such as grouper and snapper, species known to be sensitive to changes in water quality. This serves as an important indicator that the marine ecosystem surrounding the operational area remains productive.
The company also initiated the SUTAN Program (Fishermen Fish Processing Center) in Kawasi and Soligi. The program supports fishermen through cold storage facilities and marketing assistance, enabling direct integration of catches into the company’s supply chain. Throughout 2024, SUTAN fishing groups supplied 28.5 tons of fish, creating a stable economic value chain and supporting long-term social sustainability.
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Facts About the New Kawasi Settlement</h2>
The relocation of Kawasi Village residents has often attracted public attention. It is important to understand that this process was government-led and entirely voluntary.
In 2018, Kawasi Village was categorized as an underdeveloped village, frequently affected by flooding, vulnerable to sea-level rise, and exposed to extreme weather events.
Harita Nickel supported the development of a 103-hectare residential area integrated with public facilities, including 24-hour electricity access, elementary and junior high schools, a mosque, a church, community halls, sports facilities, and commercial areas. Productive land surrounding the settlement is supported by agricultural training facilities to strengthen residents’ economic self-sufficiency.
Yunince, one of the first relocated residents, shared a testimony reflecting the tangible impact of the relocation:
“When it rains, the roads are no longer muddy. When it is hot, there is no dust. Here we have electricity and water 24 hours a day. In my old house I didn’t use air conditioning, but here I’ve installed three AC units.”
(Yunince, Resident of New Kawasi)
Another resident, Nur Eneng Rahmat, who once returned to her former home, recognized a significant difference. She explained that her old house was very noisy because it was located near the main road. In the new settlement, she feels much more comfortable. The neighborhood is better organized, interactions with neighbors are more frequent, and religious activities are active. She has also been able to open a small grocery business generating daily revenues of IDR 1–2 million.
On 19 November 2025, Ikbal Hi. Mustafa, Head of the South Halmahera Public Housing and Settlement Agency, officially handed over land certificates to Kawasi residents living in the new settlement, providing legal certainty of land ownership.
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Global Standards: IRMA and RMI RMAP</h2>
Harita Nickel’s commitment to going beyond regulatory compliance is being tested through its willingness to undergo audits against global standards. The company became the first mining company in Indonesia to voluntarily undergo an audit under the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), the world’s most rigorous responsible mining standard, consisting of more than 400 assessment criteria.
As stated by IRMA Executive Director Aimee Boulanger:
“We are not here to hand out green labels. We are here to change industry expectations.”
The ongoing IRMA audit includes comprehensive assessments of water management, biodiversity, human rights, and community relations. Audit results will be published openly as part of the company’s commitment to transparency.
In addition to IRMA, Harita Nickel is also participating in the Responsible Minerals Initiative – Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMI RMAP) to ensure responsible supply chain practices aligned with human rights and transparent governance principles, based on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, ILO Core Conventions, and OECD Guidelines.
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Environmental and Social Investment Facts</h2>
In 2024, Harita Nickel invested significant resources in environmental management and sustainability initiatives. Community programs ranging from women-led cooperatives to local food security initiatives delivered measurable outcomes, achieving an average Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 2.62.
This means that every one rupiah invested generated more than double its value in social benefits. Community satisfaction with these programs averaged 89 out of 100, categorized as “very good.”
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Facts About Continuous Improvement</h2>
Harita Nickel is committed to turning every challenge into an opportunity for continuous improvement.
By opening its operations to international audits and independent research conducted by universities such as IPB University, the University of Indonesia, and Khairun University, Harita Nickel demonstrates that its governance practices on Obi Island are grounded in data and verified field assessments—an indication that coastal ecosystems remain relatively well preserved.
The journey toward responsible mining is an ongoing process, and every step forward reflects a commitment to learning, improving, and strengthening performance over time.

Obi Island: Environmental Facts and Harita Nickel’s Governance Practices

Modern mining is no longer focused solely on production. Increasingly, the industry is placing greater emphasis on managing natural resources in a more measured, efficient, and responsible manner. One approach gaining importance is the use of exploration data to support more effective and sustainable mine planning.
Harita Nickel shared this perspective during a Geology Seminar with students from the Geological Engineering Department of Sriwijaya University (Unsri) in Palembang on Friday, May 16. Through the seminar, titled “Exploration and Geological Characteristics of Laterite Nickel Deposits to Support Sustainable Resource Utilization,” students gained insights into how geological data is utilized throughout the exploration and mine planning process.
The seminar featured presentations from Harita Nickel’s Brownfield Strategic Mine Planning Manager, M. Branata Wibowo, and Exploration &amp; Technical Assessment Superintendent, Tri Hadi Nugraha.
During his presentation, Tri explained that exploration serves as a critical foundation for mining operations, as it determines the quality of information used in mineral resource management.
According to him, the exploration process begins with mapping areas that show potential for laterite nickel deposits, followed by soil and rock sampling to assess the characteristics, thickness, and distribution of nickel ore beneath the surface.
“Effective exploration planning enables companies to gain a more accurate understanding of mineral resource characteristics, allowing mining operations to be managed more efficiently and systematically,” said Tri.
The resulting exploration data is then integrated into the mine planning process. Branata explained that technical teams utilize a range of analytical approaches—including topographical, geotechnical, and hydrological assessments—to develop more precise mine designs.
He noted that a data-driven approach plays a vital role in supporting responsible mining practices, particularly in operational decision-making.
“Every stage of mine planning is interconnected. Accurate data therefore serves as a critical foundation for ensuring mining activities are carried out in an optimal and measurable manner,” Branata said.
Beyond discussing the technical aspects of exploration, Harita Nickel also introduced its implementation of Good Mining Practice principles across its operations. Through this approach, mining activities are conducted with careful consideration of production performance, occupational safety, environmental stewardship, and social sustainability.
These principles are applied throughout the mining lifecycle, from exploration and mine planning to the long-term management of operational areas.
For the students, the seminar provided a valuable opportunity to see how geological theories are applied in real-world mining operations. The interactive discussion covered a range of topics, including exploration challenges, geological data management, and the implementation of sustainable mining practices in the field.
Through this initiative, Harita Nickel continues to strengthen collaboration with academic institutions while introducing the next generation of professionals to modern mining practices that leverage data-driven approaches and sustainability principles.<script src="https://cdn.flmngr.com/widgets.js?apiKey=FLMNFLMN" data-ts="1780907073852"></script>

Advancing Responsible Mining, Harita Nickel Showcases Data-Driven Exploration

The rhythmic beat of drums blended with the resonant sound of gongs, breaking the stillness of the night along the coast of Obi Island. Two days after Muslims marked Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijri, the courtyard of the Soligi Village Office transformed into a cultural stage where centuries-old traditions were brought to life. Hundreds of residents gathered around the performance arena, their attention fixed on a celebration dedicated to preserving the roots of their identity.
That evening, the people of Soligi Village held the Ngibi Cultural Performance, a tradition inherited from their ancestors in Buton, Southeast Sulawesi. Carried across the sea generations ago, the cultural heritage has taken root and continues to thrive on Obi Island.
Before the performances began, the lively atmosphere fell silent. The village imam led a prayer, underscoring the close connection between the Ngibi dance tradition and the Islamic values embraced by the local community. The ceremony continued with a customary leader opening the arena through a pencak silat demonstration, symbolically paving the way for the younger generation who would follow.
<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/sorotan/image3_3.jpg" alt="" width="750" height="501">
The stage was then filled by the Cungka Dance, performed by female dancers to represent the earliest stage of human life in the womb. The narrative continued through the Ngibi Dance, a paired performance symbolizing gratitude for the moment when the soul is breathed into the body. Throughout the graceful choreography, male dancers refrain from touching their female partners, reflecting the community’s deep respect for women as nurturers of life.
Soligi traditional leader Imam La Puasa explained that every movement and stage of the Ngibi performance embodies moral teachings, life values, and the historical journey of the Butonese community that has been passed down through generations.
“Ngibi is more than just entertainment. It carries wisdom, history, and an identity inherited from our ancestors. That is why this tradition must be preserved, so that future generations do not lose sight of their roots,” he said.
Historically, the Ngibi Dance was performed as an expression of gratitude following a successful harvest. Today, the tradition has evolved into a cultural centerpiece for various community celebrations, including Eid al-Adha festivities.
After the philosophical reflections conveyed through dance, the arena once again came alive. Elementary and high school students took center stage in a series of pencak silat demonstrations. Cheered on by hundreds of spectators, the martial arts performances were not intended as contests of aggression but rather as expressions of sportsmanship, discipline and the warrior spirit embraced by Soligi’s younger generation.
&nbsp;
Where Industry and Local Wisdom Meet
For Soligi Village Head Madaisi La Siriali, the vibrant celebration represented more than entertainment—it was part of a broader effort to prevent cultural erosion.
“This event, supported by Harita, is the result of collaboration between the village government and customary leaders. Let us continue to learn about and preserve our identity while encouraging younger generations to safeguard their cultural heritage,” he said.
The cultural performance was made possible through collaboration between the local community and Harita Nickel. The partnership offers a tangible example that industrial development and downstream processing activities do not have to come at the expense of local cultural identity. Instead, industry can play a catalytic role in ensuring that traditional values continue to flourish.
Reaffirming this commitment, Harita Nickel Community Relations Supervisor Wigit Yan Sukmawan said the company’s presence is grounded in respect for local wisdom and cultural heritage.
“For us, preserving cultural traditions is just as important as maintaining operational excellence. The Ngibi Dance is an integral part of Soligi’s cultural identity. Our role goes beyond fulfilling social responsibilities—we want to help ensure that this tradition continues to be passed on to future generations,” Yan said.
While the growth of Indonesia’s downstream mineral industry promises economic transformation, meaningful investment also involves safeguarding the social and cultural capital that shapes local communities.
<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/sorotan/image2_1.jpg" alt="" width="750" height="501">
As the night grew later, the arena showed no signs of quieting down. Accompanied by the steady rhythm of gongs, children continued to dance and practice pencak silat with enthusiasm. They were doing more than demonstrating their skills; they were receiving the baton of Buton’s cultural legacy. In the hands of Soligi’s younger generation, this ancestral heritage remains firmly preserved, ensuring its heartbeat will continue to resonate along the shores of Obi for generations to come.

Ngibi Cultural Performance: Passing Down Buton’s Heritage to Soligi’s Younger Generation

Behind the rolling hills of Soligi Village on Obi Island, South Halmahera, rows of vegetables now flourish across neatly cultivated garden beds. Water spinach, chili peppers, long beans, and cucumbers thrive on land that was once farmed only on a small and limited scale.&nbsp;
On that afternoon, dozens of women could be seen working in the garden. Some were preparing the soil, while others examined their crops and discussed pest control and upcoming harvests. Just a few years ago, many of them were unfamiliar with basic horticultural cultivation practices, making the transformation all the more remarkable.&nbsp;
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/blobid0_8.jpg" width="700" height="466">
<figcaption>Women farmers working on their own agricultural plots.</figcaption>
</figure>
Today, those gardens have become a source of tangible benefits for the women of the Women Farmers Groups (KWT) in Soligi and Kawasi villages. The vegetables they cultivate are regularly supplied to the company and local markets, generating tens of millions of rupiah in revenue each month.
For Jahariya, head of the Soligi Women Farmers Group, the transformation has been significant. What began as a small community initiative has grown into a productive farming enterprise. Today, the group’s 19 members collectively manage four horticultural plots, cultivating a variety of crops that contribute to both household incomes and the local economy.
Today, the gardens have become a source of tangible benefits for members of the Women Farmers Groups (KWT) in Soligi and Kawasi villages. The vegetables they cultivate are regularly supplied to the company and local markets, generating tens of millions of rupiah in monthly revenue.
Jahariya, head of the Soligi Women Farmers Group, said the group’s 19 members now manage four horticultural farming plots.
“We grow vegetables, chili peppers, and long beans across four locations. Fresh produce is delivered to the company twice a week, generating around Rp30 million in revenue each month,” she said.
For Jahariya, the achievement represents more than an additional source of income. Through these farming activities, members of the group have gained greater confidence and are playing a more active role in supporting their families’ economic well-being.
Agriculture is not new to Obi Island. For generations, communities in Soligi and Kawasi villages have relied on nutmeg, clove, and coconut plantations as key sources of livelihood. However, farming practices have largely remained traditional, with knowledge passed down through generations and cultivation methods often limited in scope, including shifting farming practices and basic agricultural techniques.
Horticultural crops were also relatively unfamiliar to many residents. Where such crops were cultivated, farming was often carried out without structured planting schedules, seedling management, or adequate pest control practices.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/blobid1_7.jpg" width="700" height="466">
<figcaption>Activities at the horticultural farming field.</figcaption>
</figure>
Recognizing these challenges, Harita Nickel launched its Field School program to provide guidance and support to local communities, particularly the Women Farmers Groups (KWT) in Soligi and Kawasi villages.
The initiative extends beyond technical agricultural training. It adopts a value-based approach that begins with understanding the community’s needs, especially those of women seeking opportunities to help improve their families’ livelihoods. Through this participatory approach, the program aims to strengthen both farming skills and community resilience.
“All members of the farming groups here are women. Most men work for the company or earn a living as fishermen, so the women wanted to contribute to their household income through agriculture,” said Albertus Darukumara, Community Development Supervisor at Harita Nickel.
In the early stages, the mentoring process was not without challenges. One of the biggest obstacles was the expectation of quick results, while horticultural farming requires patience, consistency, and a gradual learning process.
To address this, the facilitators adopted a hands-on approach. Following introductory training sessions, group members were encouraged to learn directly in the field, gaining practical experience in preparing planting beds, raising seedlings, caring for crops, and identifying signs of pest infestations. Through this experiential learning process, participants gradually built the skills and confidence needed to manage their gardens independently.
The approach gradually began to bear fruit.
Today, members of the Women Farmers Groups (KWT) in Soligi and Kawasi are able to cultivate a wide range of horticultural crops, including water spinach, spinach, bitter melon, eggplant, long beans, and chili peppers, with steadily improving quality. They have also developed a better understanding of the importance of maintaining product quality and ensuring a consistent supply to sustain consumer trust.
Thofiya, Chair of the Kawasi Women Farmers Group, said the farming program has brought tangible benefits to her family.
"We are grateful to the company because the proceeds from our first and second harvests in Akelamo enabled us to support our grandchild’s education through high school in Bacan," she said.
The transformation has also been felt across the wider community. Abu Jaya, a community leader and village official in Soligi, said that group members have not only improved their farming skills but have also begun to manage agricultural activities collectively and more effectively.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/blobid2_7.jpg" width="700" height="466">

For Harita Nickel, the field school program goes beyond agricultural training. It is designed to foster community self-reliance, particularly among women, by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to develop sustainable farming practices independently and share their experience with others in their villages.
Across the hillsides of Soligi and Kawasi, now dotted with thriving horticultural crops, the impact is becoming increasingly visible. The change has emerged gradually but meaningfully. Through the dedication of local women, land that was once cultivated on a limited scale has evolved into a new source of livelihood, helping to strengthen household incomes and create opportunities for the future.

Beyond serving as a moment of giving, Eid al-Adha celebrations in villages surrounding the company’s operations are also closely intertwined with local cultural traditions.
Ishak La Puasa, a religious leader from Soligi Village, said residents have preserved a distinctive tradition that has been passed down through generations and continues to be observed during Eid al-Adha.
Before the animals are slaughtered, they are bathed, draped in white cloth and paraded around the mosque as a gesture of respect and gratitude.
“This tradition has been handed down for generations among the Butonese community in Soligi. After the sacrificial rites are completed, residents usually continue the celebration with a performance of Ngibi, a traditional cultural art form that brings the community together,” he said.
For the people of Soligi, Eid al-Adha is not only a religious observance but also an opportunity to strengthen social bonds and preserve local cultural heritage.
Through this year’s Eid al-Adha celebration, Harita Nickel aims to continue supporting the values of generosity, togetherness, and social care in the communities around its operations.

In the mining and mineral processing industry, a strong safety culture is essential to ensuring safe and sustainable operations. Through a guest lecture at the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia (UI), Harita Nickel shared insights on the role of leadership in fostering a strong workplace safety culture.
The lecture, part of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Leadership course titled “OHS Leadership: Building an Excellent Safety Culture,” featured Harita Nickel’s Vice President of OHS &amp; Management System, Supriyanto Suwarno The session provided students with a practical understanding of how occupational health and safety principles are implemented in high-risk industries.
Supriyanto explained that a strong safety culture cannot be built through procedures and supervision alone. Instead, safety must stem from each individual’s awareness of workplace risks and a consistent commitment to safe behavior.
“The goal is to shift the mindset from simple monitoring to voluntary compliance, where every individual understands the risks associated with their work,” said Supriyanto.
He emphasized that leadership plays a critical role in shaping safety behavior within the workplace. Effective leaders set the standard through their decisions, communication, and daily actions, consistently placing safety as a top priority.
Harita Nickel applies this approach through its Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) strategy, which encourages employees to proactively identify potential hazards, remind colleagues when they observe unsafe behavior, and report risks before they develop into incidents.
“A safety culture cannot be built overnight. Consistency and leadership by example are essential to making safety an integral part of workplace culture,” he said.
According to Supriyanto, occupational health and safety should also be viewed as a long-term investment that supports productivity, operational reliability, and business sustainability. Strengthening safety culture is therefore a key component of responsible and effective operations.
For UI students, the session offered an opportunity to see how concepts learned in the classroom are applied in industrial operations. The discussion was highly interactive, with students exploring the challenges of building a strong safety culture and implementing OHS practices in the workplace.
Through this initiative, Harita Nickel also aims to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry while promoting greater awareness among young people about the importance of workplace safety. The company believes that introducing OHS principles early can help prepare future professionals who possess not only technical expertise but also a strong commitment to safety and sustainability.
Harita Nickel remains committed to strengthening its safety culture, both across its operations and through partnerships with educational institutions. The company believes that a strong safety culture is fundamental to protecting employees, maintaining operational reliability, and supporting sustainable growth.<script src="https://cdn.flmngr.com/widgets.js?apiKey=FLMNFLMN" data-ts="1780899119099"></script>

Harita Nickel Shares Best Practices for Building a Sustainable Safety Culture with UI Students

Mangroves are one of the coastal ecosystems whose roles often go unnoticed, even though their impact is significant for both the environment and the communities living nearby. In Indonesia, mangrove forests grow across many regions, including Obi Island, which is characterized by coastal landscapes and rich biodiversity.
On Obi Island, mangrove ecosystems can be found along both the southern and northern coasts, with notable presence in<a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/komitmen-lestarikan-lingkungan-harita-nickel-tanam-mangrove-di-desa-soligi-3"> Soligi Village</a>, Anggai Village, and West Madapolo Village. These areas have become focal points for conservation efforts through the planting of endemic North Maluku mangrove seedlings.
With many settlements located directly along the coastline, mangroves on Obi Island are not merely an environmental feature, they are an integral part of daily life for coastal communities.
<h2 dir="ltr">What Are Mangroves?</h2>
Mangroves are plants that grow in coastal areas where land and sea meet. They are able to survive in extreme conditions, such as high salinity, muddy soils, and low oxygen levels conditions in which most other plants cannot thrive.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) describes mangroves as a unique ecosystem with high adaptability and complex ecological functions.
Some key characteristics of mangroves include:
<ul>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Having aerial roots (pneumatophores) that emerge above the soil surface
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Growing in tidal areas
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Tolerating high levels of salinity
</li>
</ul>
<h2 dir="ltr">Functions and Benefits of Mangroves on Obi Island</h2>
<h3 dir="ltr">1. Protecting Coastlines as a Natural Greenbelt</h3>
One of the most visible functions of mangroves is protecting coastlines from abrasion and wave impact. Their strong root systems act like natural anchors, preventing soil erosion while reducing wave energy before it reaches the land.
On Obi Island, where most economic activities and settlements are located along the coast, this function is essential for maintaining long-term coastal stability.
<h3 dir="ltr">2. Serving as Habitat for Marine Life </h3>
Beyond their physical role in protecting coastlines, mangroves also play an ecological role as habitats and breeding grounds for various species of fish, crabs, and other marine organisms. This ecosystem contributes to the sustainability of local fisheries.
<h3 dir="ltr">3. Absorbing Large Amounts of Carbon (Blue Carbon)</h3>
Mangroves are known as one of the most effective carbon-absorbing ecosystems in the world.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), mangroves can store significant amounts of carbon, particularly in soil sediments. This capability makes them part of the blue carbon ecosystem, which plays an important role in climate change mitigation.
Mangrove conservation therefore contributes not only to local environmental health but also to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
<h3 dir="ltr">4. Maintaining Coastal Water Quality</h3>
Mangroves also function as natural filters. Sediments and pollutants carried by currents are trapped before reaching the open sea, helping maintain better water quality in mangrove areas compared to coastal regions without vegetation cover.

Mangrove conservation is essential for sustaining coastal ecosystems. Efforts include rehabilitation, replanting, and sustainable environmental management.
In Indonesia, mangrove rehabilitation is also part of the national agenda promoted by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
On Obi Island, conservation efforts are focused in Soligi Village, Anggai Village, and West Madapolo Village. These efforts are not only driven by formal programs but also by strong local community initiatives.
One example is community groups such as the <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/kelompok-tongke-inisiatif-pelestarian-lingkungan-berbasis-masyarakat">Tongke Group</a> in Soligi Village, which since 2019 has independently protected and managed mangrove forests in their coastal area.
This group emerged from community awareness of the importance of mangroves for both the environment and livelihoods. With approximately 23 hectares of mangrove forest in the Soligi area, the presence of this community plays a crucial role in maintaining the sustainability of coastal ecosystems.
<h2 dir="ltr">Collaborative Mangrove Conservation on Obi Island</h2>
Over time, mangrove conservation efforts on Obi Island have been strengthened through collaboration between communities and various stakeholders.
As part of its operational area, Harita Nickel contributes through a community-based approach.
This collaboration includes:
<ul>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
<a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/hari-mangrove-sedunia-harita-nickel-ajak-siswa-tanam-mangrove-di-pesisir-desa-soligi">Mangrove seedling planting activities</a>
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Mentoring community groups such as the Tongke Group
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Training on nursery development and mangrove planting techniques
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Ongoing ecosystem monitoring and evaluation
</li>
</ul>
This approach is designed to ensure that communities are not only participants but also capable of independently managing and sustaining mangrove ecosystems in the future.
<h2 dir="ltr">Protecting Mangroves Means Protecting Life</h2>
Mangroves are vital ecosystems with multiple functions, from protecting coastlines as natural greenbelts to absorbing large amounts of carbon as part of the blue carbon ecosystem.
On Obi Island, protecting mangroves means protecting livelihoods. Their presence not only maintains environmental balance but also supports the daily lives of coastal communities. Through conservation efforts involving local communities and support from various stakeholders, including Harita Nickel, mangroves are expected to continue thriving and providing benefits for future generations.

Understanding Mangroves: Functions, Benefits, and Conservation Efforts on Obi Island

The gentle breeze sweeping across Lake Karo awakened the memories of Jofi Cako and Teo Jurumudi. For these two young men from Kawasi Village, this natural body of water is far more than a mere ecosystem; it was their childhood playground, a place where they would fish and catch eels until dusk.
Teo’s emotional connection is even more personal. His gaze fixed intently on a small patch of land in the middle of the lake, where his family, along with a dozen other households, once resided, living in perfect harmony with nature.
"This vast lake is an inseparable part of our identity," he said softly.
These tales of the past resurfaced on a Saturday morning (May 23). This time, no longer there to play, Jofi and Teo arrived to guide approximately 30 villagers on a "Cultural Heritage Expedition." In collaboration with Harita Nickel, they led the community in retracing their ancestors' footsteps, which now lie within the Obi Industrial Area.

<figcaption>Community Visit from Kawasi Village to Lake Karo.</figcaption>
</figure>
The presence of Kawasi Village's Traditional Leader, Otniel Datang, among the group deepened the sense of nostalgia. He recounted that their forebears originally named the waters Talaga Diki-Diki or Talaga Ma Hilo in the language of the Tobelo, the first tribe to inhabit Obi Island. It translates to "Dammar Lake," referring to the ancient practice of locals who frequently foraged for dammar resin in the vicinity to use as night lamps.
"The atmosphere hasn't changed much. That small island is still there, and the water remains clear and green. This is a heritage we must protect together," he urged, gazing out over the expanse of water.
This message of preservation instantly resonated with the younger generation. For Kresya L., an eighth-grade student at Loji Permai Junior High School, the pristine beauty of Lake Karo and the majestic remnants of De Brill Fort had, until now, been nothing more than bedtime stories told by her parents.
"I am so thrilled to finally see it in person, rather than just imagining it from my mom and dad's stories," she said enthusiastically, as the group set off to explore the ruins of the 17th-century Dutch colonial fort dating back to the spice monopoly era.

Harmonizing historical remnants and natural preservation with the rapid pace of industrialization undeniably demands serious commitment. Today, De Brill Fort, once obscured by dense forest, has been restored as a cultural heritage site jointly managed by the North Maluku Cultural Preservation Agency (BPK) and Harita Nickel.
The company's transparency in opening access to this historical site and ecological zone earned the appreciation of the Head of the Kawasi Village Consultative Body (BPD), Reinhard Siar. "Today we proved that the nature surrounding Lake Karo has not been destroyed, contrary to circulating rumors. The lake is well-maintained, and its presence even contributes to surface water taxes for regional development," he explained.
This balance, admittedly, did not happen by chance. Harita Nickel's Head of Technical Support, Dian Kristiyanto, emphasized that the company is highly cognizant of the cultural value of these locations. "We established a specific perimeter to ensure that both Lake Karo and De Brill Fort remain secure from any mining or smelter activities," he stated firmly.
This protection is further reinforced through a Chance Find Procedure, a mandatory protocol requiring the temporary suspension of all work activities should any potential new cultural heritage artifacts be discovered in the field.

Ultimately, the day's expedition fostered a collective awareness. At the event's conclusion, Jofi summarized that preserving the relics of the past is not merely about protecting physical structures or landscapes, but rather about nurturing the very roots from which they originated.
"The community, the government, and the company must continue to work hand in hand," he concluded. It is a knot of hope from Obi, ensuring that the roar of the engines of progress does not drown out the chronicles of the past.
