As global demand for nickel continues to increase, particularly for stainless steel and electric vehicle (EV) batteries, responsible mining has become a central priority within the mining industry. In Indonesia, as one of the world’s largest nickel producers, responsible mining is no longer just a good practice, but also a strategic necessity to ensure long-term economic, social, and environmental sustainability. In addition, the rapid growth of nickel mining operations in Indonesia has also raised public concerns regarding environmental impacts and community relations, highlighting the importance of continuous improvement, transparency, and the implementation of more responsible mining practices.

What Is Responsible Mining?

Responsible mining is an operational approach that integrates environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and strong governance, commonly referred to as ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), into all mining activities.

This principle recognizes that mining operations must be conducted safely, transparently, environmentally responsibly, and in ways that deliver tangible benefits to surrounding communities.

Today, the nickel mining sector faces increasing pressure to adopt these principles in response to global regulatory demands and international buyers’ expectations for clean and responsibly sourced raw materials.

Key Aspects of Responsible Mining

The following are the core components underpinning responsible mining in the nickel industry:

1. Environmental Stewardship

Responsible mining minimizes environmental impact through:

Effective waste and tailings management to prevent soil and water contamination

Progressive land reclamation and post-mining restoration

Emission and dust control to protect air quality

International standards such as ISO 14001 and adherence to good mining practices provide structured guidance for environmental management.

2. Social Responsibility and Community Engagement

Responsible nickel mining extends beyond operational performance by prioritizing community well-being through:

Inclusive dialogue and stakeholder engagement processes

Investment in education, healthcare, and workforce development

Local economic empowerment initiatives

3. Transparent and Compliant Governance

Strong governance in responsible mining includes:

Full compliance with national regulations

Transparent risk management and sustainability reporting

Independent audits and performance assessments

Why Responsible Mining Is Becoming Increasingly Important

1. Growing Global Demand for Sustainable Raw Materials

Global markets, particularly EV battery manufacturers, increasingly prioritize responsibly produced raw materials. Nickel that meets ESG standards demonstrates stronger sustainability credentials and supply chain accountability.

2. Reputation and Competitiveness of Indonesia’s Nickel Industry

The issue of “dirty nickel” has previously been raised as criticism of mining practices in certain areas that have not fully implemented sustainability principles. Responsible mining serves as a response to these challenges, helping strengthen the credibility of Indonesian nickel products in the global market.

3. Local Social and Economic Sustainability

Responsible practices also help strengthen relationships between mining companies and local communities, contributing positively to regional development and local economic growth.

Challenges in Implementing Responsible Mining

Implementing responsible mining is not without challenges. These include:

Long-term commitment: Responsible mining is a continuous commitment, and requires integration of common operational principles across the organization.

Multi-stakeholder coordination: Strong collaboration among government, communities, and industry is essential.

Higher operational costs: Initial investments in environmental technologies and monitoring systems require significant resources.

However, these challenges also create opportunities for innovation and more sustainable industry transformation.

Examples of Responsible Mining in Practice

International Standard Assessments: IRMA

Several mining companies in Indonesia have begun evaluating their operations against global standards. The IRMA (Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance) Standard For Responsible Mining is recognized as the most comprehensive and internationally recognized standards for assessing responsible mining performance. IRMA is governed by multi-stakeholder collaboration between civil society, communities, organized labor, and the private sector, which ensures broad acceptance of the standard.

An IRMA audit includes comprehensive, stringent assessments of environmental impacts, labor management, community engagement, and business integrity, across 428 requirements.

Government and Industry Approach

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) of the Republic of Indonesia has firmly emphasized that responsible mining practices must become a pillar of sustainability in the national mining industry. This includes implementing ESG principles throughout all stages of mining activities, not merely meeting minimum regulatory requirements.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate that mining and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. When implemented responsibly, mining can serve as a catalyst for economic growth, community development, and environmental stewardship.

Responsible Mining: The Foundation of Sustainable Nickel Operations

Responsible mining in nickel operations is a strategic approach that integrates environmental stewardship, social equity, and transparent governance. As global demand for nickel continues to grow, responsible practices distinguish operations that prioritize long-term value creation from those focused solely on production.

Through ESG integration, independent audits such as IRMA, regulatory alignment, and meaningful stakeholder engagement, Indonesia’s nickel industry is steadily advancing toward a more sustainable and accountable future.

Responsible Mining in Nickel Operations: Concepts, Principles, and Field Implementation

Every task and every decision at work shares the same purpose: ensuring every Harita employee returns home safely at the end of the day. Across Harita Nickel's operations—where heavy equipment, high-voltage electrical installations, and hazardous chemicals are part of daily activities—safety cannot rely on caution alone. It requires a consistent set of standards that everyone understands and applies.

To achieve this, Harita Nickel continues to strengthen its safety culture by implementing systems that help control risks associated with high-risk work. One of these is the Critical Safety Compliance Protocol (CSCP) or Cara Selamat Capai Produksi (How to Achieve Production Safely), a safety framework developed by the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) team to establish a consistent approach to critical risk management across all business units.

According to Harita Nickel Vice President of OHS & Management System, Supriyanto Suwarno, CSCP was developed to help prevent fatal incidents through a standardized and systematic approach.

"CSCP was developed to help prevent fatal incidents across all work activities. Through this framework, the principal hazards across our operations—from mining to processing—are mapped into a single, standardised safety framework," he said.

At its core, CSCP is built around six key elements that serve as the fundamental requirements before, during, and after high-risk work is carried out.

Competency: Ensuring every worker has the required competence, training, and certification for the task being performed.

Documentation: Verifying that work procedures, permits, and supporting documentation are complete and approved before work begins.

Risk Control: Ensuring critical risk controls are effectively implemented, including Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures and safety reviews.

Equipment: Confirming that all equipment is fit for purpose, safe to operate, and routinely inspected and maintained.

Critical Aspects: Ensuring all critical factors that could affect people, the environment, or surrounding communities have been identified and appropriately controlled.

Management Review: Evaluating the effectiveness of safety controls through regular management review and continuous improvement.

These six elements are applied across 13 Fatality Intervention Elements, which represent the highest-risk work activities within Harita Nickel's operations. They cover a broad range of critical tasks, including heavy equipment operation, electrical work, chemical handling, and work involving hazardous gases and molten metal.

Through CSCP, Harita Nickel aims to ensure that safety is more than a corporate commitment—it becomes a consistent operational standard applied across every work area. The framework also positions every Harita employee as an active participant in the company's safety management system, empowering them not only to comply with procedures but also to identify hazards, control risks, and help protect themselves and those around them.

"Since 2025, we have been rolling out CSCP across all business units. Through this framework, we encourage every Harita employee to understand the risks in their work area, comply with established safety procedures, and have the confidence to stop work whenever conditions are considered unsafe," Supriyanto concluded.

Know the risks. Control the hazards. Stop the job if it isn't safe.

Starting from August 2026, the Bentala Halmahera newsletter will feature a dedicated series exploring each of the 13 Fatality Intervention Elements within the CSCP framework. Stay tuned to every edition to learn how every Harita employee plays an essential role in protecting themselves, their colleagues, and the wider operational environment.

Competing, Creating, and Coming Together in Celebration of Independence

Along the coastline of Soligi Village on Obi Island, coastal erosion has become an increasing concern for local communities. To help strengthen the village's natural coastal defences, students from Universitas Gadjah Mada's (UGM) Community Service Programme (KKN) joined forces with Harita Nickel, the Soligi Village Government, the Tongke Community, and local school students to plant 380 mangrove seedlings in commemoration of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.

For the people of Soligi, mangroves are far more than coastal vegetation. They act as a natural buffer against erosion, provide habitat for marine and coastal biodiversity, and help sustain the livelihoods of communities that depend on healthy coastal ecosystems.

Soligi is home to approximately 23 hectares of mangrove forest, parts of which have been degraded over the years due to the harvesting of mangrove roots for firewood. Restoring these ecosystems has therefore become an important step in rebuilding the coastline's ecological functions while improving its resilience to erosion.

A joint mangrove planting initiative carried out by the government, UGM Community Service Program (KKN UGM) students, and Harita Nickel.

The initiative originated from research conducted by UGM's KKN team before their deployment to Obi Island. Based on their findings, the students identified mangrove rehabilitation as one of the most relevant and practical ways to address Soligi's coastal challenges.

Shofwah Nur Aziza, a Forestry student at UGM, said the team's field research shaped the programme's focus.

"Before coming to Obi Island, we studied Soligi's coastal conditions and recognised the need for practical measures to reduce erosion risks. Mangrove planting became our way of contributing to the protection of both the coastline and the local community," she said.

The rehabilitation effort also builds on work already underway within the community. The Tongke Community has established and manages a local mangrove nursery, where all seedlings used in the programme were propagated and nurtured by local residents. As a result, the restoration process began well before planting day and will continue through long-term maintenance and monitoring.

Planting the seedlings, however, is only the first step. The long-term success of mangrove rehabilitation depends on whether the young trees survive, mature, and eventually develop into healthy coastal ecosystems. Regular monitoring and replacement planting where necessary are therefore integral parts of the programme.

Mangrove planting with elementary school students from Soligi Village.

Aldico Satria Ganesa, Marine Environmental Monitoring Foreman at Harita Nickel, said newly planted mangroves require continuous care during their early stages of growth.

"Young mangroves are still vulnerable to waves, currents, and floating debris. We will continue monitoring their growth and replace any seedlings when necessary. As the mangroves mature, they will provide long-term protection for Soligi's coastline and deliver lasting benefits for the surrounding community," he said.

Rusman Baharudin, founder of the Tongke Community and a teacher at SMP Negeri 39 South Halmahera, believes long-term collaboration is essential to the success of mangrove restoration.

"Coastal erosion is a challenge that cannot be addressed by one group alone. Through our community nursery, we will continue supporting the care of these seedlings until they become a strong natural defence for Soligi's coastline," he said.

The Soligi planting initiative forms part of Harita Nickel's broader mangrove rehabilitation programme, which has been underway since 2021. To date, the company has planted more than 67,000 mangrove seedlings across four locations in South Halmahera Regency, while supporting the entire restoration cycle, from nursery development and planting to ongoing maintenance and monitoring, to promote long-term ecosystem recovery.

The seedlings planted today may still be small, but over time they are expected to grow into thriving mangrove forests that help reduce coastal erosion, restore habitats for marine life, and strengthen the resilience of coastal communities. Through collaboration between local communities, government, academia, and the private sector, Soligi is laying the foundations for a more resilient coastal future.

Restoring Mangroves, Strengthening Soligi’s Coastal Resilience

Cheers and applause echoed across the stage at the 2026 Obi Children's Festival. One by one, students stepped forward to perform traditional dances, answer quiz questions, and showcase their talents. Before an audience of teachers, parents, and community members, around 200 students from Kawasi and Soligi villages found the confidence to perform in public and celebrate their abilities.

Held under the theme "Joyful Obi, Child-Friendly Obi," the festival was part of Indonesia's National Children's Day celebration on Obi Island. Students from primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools took part in a range of activities, from traditional dance performances to the Class of Champion academic challenge. More than a competition, the festival gave young people an opportunity to express themselves, discover their strengths, and learn through experience.

Suryo Aji, Community Development Superintendent at Harita Nickel, said the festival was designed to create an enjoyable learning environment while encouraging children to believe in themselves and develop the confidence to perform in front of others.

"We want children to have a place where they can learn, express themselves, and believe in themselves. This festival is only the starting point. Through Sanggar Anak, we hope to provide continuous opportunities for them to keep learning, creating, and growing," he said.

For educators, experiences like these offer valuable lessons that cannot always be gained in the classroom. Dameria Silaya, a teacher at SMP Negeri 39 South Halmahera, has seen that change firsthand.

"Children who are usually quiet or shy become much more confident when given the opportunity to perform. Experiences like this help build self-confidence, and that will stay with them as they face new challenges in the future," she said.

One of those students was Fahril Muhlis from SMA Negeri 39 South Halmahera. Although he admitted feeling nervous before taking the stage, he decided to challenge himself by joining the competition.

"I'm actually not a very confident person. But through this event, I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. I hope it also encourages my friends to be brave enough to show what they're capable of," he said.

The festival also marks the beginning of a longer journey. Harita Nickel plans to launch Sanggar Anak, a monthly enrichment programme that will provide regular opportunities for children to explore the arts, develop creativity, strengthen practical skills, and showcase their work. The programme is designed to ensure that the enthusiasm generated during the festival continues long after the event has ended.

Bambang Bakir, Head of Social Welfare Affairs at the Kawasi Village Government, welcomed the initiative, saying children benefit from having more opportunities to develop their talents while building character.

"We hope programmes like this will continue. The more opportunities children have to learn and gain the confidence to perform, the greater their chances of developing their full potential," he said.

Obi Children's Festival Gives Children a Space to Learn, Create, and Thrive

No two waves arrive the same way. One day the sea is calm; the next, stronger currents reshape the shoreline. Sediment shifts, coastlines evolve, and estuaries continuously respond to nature's rhythms. Along the coast of Obi Island, such changes are not exceptions—they are part of everyday life.

That is why protecting the coastline is never a one-off undertaking. It requires continuous monitoring, evaluation and improvement to keep pace with an environment that is constantly changing.

This adaptive environmental management approach underpins Harita Nickel's enhancement of the breakwater system along the Kawasi coastline in 2026. Rather than starting from scratch, the project builds on structures constructed in 2022–2023, refining their design based on years of environmental monitoring and evaluation.

A breakwater is designed to dissipate wave energy before it reaches the shoreline. In Kawasi, it also forms part of an integrated environmental management system connected to the Todoku Canal. The structure helps reduce the direct intrusion of seawater during high tides while supporting water flow management and sediment control in the estuary.

Harita Nickel Environmental Monitoring Supervisor Rifki Surya Nugraha explained that sedimentation in estuarine areas is a natural process. The company's focus, he said, is not to eliminate it, but to manage it in a way that protects both the surrounding environment and community activities.

"The breakwater enables us to carry out routine maintenance of the waterway, ensuring that the navigation route used by local residents remains accessible," Rifki said.

Explanation by Rifky Surya Nugraha regarding the function of a breakwater.

The benefits are also recognised by the local community. Hamja Lewer, a community leader from Kawasi Village, recalled that the Todoku Canal was once too narrow for boats to pass through comfortably, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. Widening and dredging the canal, together with the construction of the breakwater, are expected to improve water flow while maintaining access for community transportation.

What makes this project noteworthy is that the latest breakwater is the result of an ongoing learning process. Data collected through environmental monitoring of waves, coastal erosion and sedimentation has been used to refine the design, enabling the coastal protection system to better respond to changing natural conditions.

The approach is consistent with the view of Candra Wirawan Arief, a researcher at the Center of Environment and Sustainability Science, Padjadjaran University. According to him, every human activity has the potential to affect the environment. What matters most is not whether risks exist, but how they are monitored, mitigated, evaluated and continuously improved over time.

For Harita Nickel, a breakwater is more than a line of rocks shielding the shore from the sea. It represents an ongoing process of learning—observing how nature changes, assessing what has been achieved, and refining the next course of action.

Because protecting the coastline does not end when construction is completed. On Obi Island, every wave offers a new lesson, and with each lesson comes another opportunity to strengthen the protection of its coastal environment.

Learning from the Waves: Strengthening Kawasi's Coastline

The warehouse at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) and PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (ONC) looked different from its usual layout. Shelves normally filled with operational equipment and materials were rearranged to create an open space in the centre of the warehouse, transforming the area into a competition arena for forklift and hand pallet operators. The event was organised by Harita Nickel as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen operator competency while reinforcing its occupational health and safety (OHS) culture.

Organised through PT HPL and PT ONC, the competition brought together warehouse operators from both companies. Participants competed in two categories—forklift and hand pallet—through a series of practical simulations designed to assess both their equipment handling skills and their discipline in following safe operating procedures.

Warehouse operations play a critical role in the company's operational value chain. Operators' precision in handling and moving materials not only supports efficient logistics, but also contributes to workplace safety, protects company assets, and helps ensure safe and reliable operations.

The competition was designed to evaluate participants' technical skills alongside their adherence to safety procedures. Before beginning each challenge, participants were required to complete a daily pre-operational inspection of their equipment. They then manoeuvred a forklift or hand pallet while carrying a basin filled with water through a zigzag course marked by traffic cones. The exercise tested operators' ability to control the equipment with precision, with less water spilled indicating greater control and proficiency.

Participants were assessed based on the completion of the pre-operational inspection, speed, precision, and compliance with safety procedures, including sounding the horn at designated points throughout the course.

Syarif Hadi Fatullah, Operational Health and Safety (OHS) Superintendent at PT HPL and one of the competition judges, said the event provided an effective way to directly observe operators' technical competency and discipline in applying safe work practices.

"Forklift and hand pallet operating skills are essential to maintaining workplace safety. There is always room for improvement, particularly in terms of precision and efficiency. We hope this competition encourages all operators to continue sharpening their skills while strengthening their safety awareness in their daily work," said Syarif.

The participants shared the same enthusiasm. Irwan, who won first place in the forklift category, said the competition was both a valuable experience and a timely refresher on the work procedures he applies every day.

"I'm proud to have won the competition. More importantly, it reminded us to consistently follow operating procedures, starting from completing equipment checks before use to maintaining safety throughout every stage of forklift operation," Irwan said.

Held in June 2026, the competition forms part of Harita Nickel's ongoing occupational health and safety programme. By engaging operators directly through practical, field-based activities, the company not only strengthens technical competency but also reinforces safety as an integral part of everyday work.

Through continuous competency development, Harita Nickel remains committed to embedding a strong safety culture across all operational functions, including logistics and warehouse operations, which play an essential role in supporting safe, reliable, and sustainable business operations.

Strengthening Operator Competency and Safety Culture Through a Forklift and Hand Pallet Competition

Behind a computer screen displaying mine designs, Yayu Inryani Sari begins her day as a Junior Mine Plan Engineer. At PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP), one of Harita Nickel's mining companies, she analyses operational data and prepares mine plans that help guide safe, efficient, and productive mining activities. Beyond her role as an engineer, she also embraces another role that defines her just as much—that of a mother.

very time she leaves for work, Yayu embarks on a long journey from Seludau Village in Tana Tidung, North Kalimantan, to Obi Island in South Halmahera, North Maluku. Traveling across land, sea, and air, the journey serves as a constant reminder that every mile she covers is part of her pursuit of a career in the mining industry while striving to build a better future for her family.

For Yayu, these two roles have never been in conflict. Motherhood has never meant putting aside her dream of becoming a mining engineer. Instead, it has become the motivation that drives her to keep growing while building a better future for her family.

Yayu's interest in mining began during high school. Inspired by women working confidently in the field, she chose to study Mining Engineering at university before joining Harita Nickel in 2023.

As part of the Mine Plan team, Yayu helps develop mine plans by analysing operational data and preparing mine designs that support safe, efficient, and reliable mining operations while meeting production targets.

Her career entered a new chapter when she became a mother. Rather than seeing family and career as competing priorities, Yayu believes each strengthens the other.

"From the moment I decided to become a mother, I never saw my career and family as two paths that required me to choose one over the other. Becoming a mother was not the end of my journey. It marked the beginning of a new chapter that has motivated me to continue growing, both as a mother and as an engineer," Yayu said.

Balancing both roles has not been without challenges. While Yayu works on Obi Island, her parents play an important role in caring for her child. Their support gives her peace of mind and allows her to stay focused on her responsibilities at work.

"I wouldn't be able to do this without them. Their trust and encouragement have allowed me to pursue my career while also being there for my child," she said.

Yayu also credits her workplace with helping her maintain a healthy balance between work and family life. According to her, the roster system provides the certainty she needs to fully focus on work while making the most of her time with her family during her roster break.

"For me, the roster is more than just a work schedule. Knowing my schedule in advance allows me to stay fully focused while I'm at work and enjoy meaningful time with my family when I'm off duty," she said.

Das Anton, Mine Plan Manager at PT TBP, described Yayu as someone with a strong willingness to learn who has grown into a dependable member of the team.

"At Harita Nickel, everyone has the same opportunity to grow. What matters is competence, a willingness to learn, and performance. Yayu has shown that opportunities in mining are built on competence, not gender," Das said.

For Yayu, every journey back to Obi Island is a reminder of why she chose this path. It is not only about building a career, but also about creating a better future for her family. Behind the safety helmet she wears each day is a woman who continues to show that motherhood is never a barrier to growth, contribution, or a fulfilling career in the mining industry.

PELITA Batch V Prepares Obi Youth for Careers as Air Conditioning Technicians

Building a sustainable mining industry requires more than innovation at operational sites—it also depends on sharing knowledge with the next generation. Through its Harita Mengajar (Harita Teaches) programme, Harita Nickel brought its industry experts to leading universities to share practical insights, promote responsible mining practices, and strengthen collaboration between industry and academia.

The roadshow visited IPB University, Trisakti University, and Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII). Through guest lectures and interactive discussions, students gained insights into various aspects of the nickel industry, including environmental management, mining and nickel processing innovations, and the role of chemistry in supporting the global energy transition.

The programme began at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, IPB University. Retno Dewi Handayani, Vice President of Environmental Green Mining at Harita Nickel, shared the company's experience in biodiversity conservation and environmental management across its operations. Her presentation covered post-mining land reclamation, the development of Loji Central Nursery as a dedicated plant nursery supporting reclamation efforts, and ongoing monitoring of flora, fauna, and aquatic ecosystems.

Retno also highlighted Harita Nickel's innovation in utilising nickel slag as a soil ameliorant, which has been certified under the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 9420:2025). The initiative demonstrates how collaboration between industry and academia can drive more effective and responsible reclamation practices.

"Through well-planned, data-driven environmental management, we want to demonstrate that mining and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand. Academic forums like this provide an excellent platform to exchange knowledge while discussing both the challenges and opportunities of environmental management in the mining sector," said Retno.

The roadshow continued at the Faculty of Earth Technology and Energy, Trisakti University. Speaking to around 80 students, Iwan Syahroni, Executive Vice President of Environmental Affairs at Harita Nickel, introduced the company's integrated nickel value chain—from mining operations and processing through Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) and High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) technologies to the company's broader sustainability initiatives, including energy efficiency, solar power utilisation, coal dome facilities, and achievements in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance.

"Today's mining industry requires professionals who not only possess strong technical capabilities but also have a solid understanding of sustainability, environmental responsibility, and good governance. That is why collaboration with universities is essential to preparing the next generation for the challenges and opportunities of the future mining industry," Iwan said.

The final session was held at the Chemistry Study Programme, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), under the theme Global Energy Transition: The Role of Chemistry and the Next Generation in Sustainable Mining. Iwan explained the critical role of chemistry in nickel processing through HPAL technology, highlighting its application in process optimisation, product quality control, water and waste management, and emissions control.

"The global energy transition presents tremendous opportunities for Indonesia's younger generation to contribute through a wide range of disciplines. We hope students will recognise that modern mining depends on cross-disciplinary collaboration to deliver innovations that support sustainable development," he added.

Through the Harita Mengajar roadshow, Harita Nickel continues to strengthen partnerships with universities while introducing responsible mining practices to future professionals.
