Harita Nickel successfully conducted a Large-Scale Emergency Response Drill (LSE) from July 27-29, 2025, at its operational site on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. With the theme "Integrated Management of Natural and Technological Disasters," the event was designed to test and enhance the company's emergency response system capabilities in facing complex, multi-hazard scenarios.

The LSE was held in strategic partnership with the Disaster Risk Reduction Center (DRRC) of the University of Indonesia, a leading institution renowned for its expertise in disaster risk management.

The drill involved active participation of the management team, emergency response team, and at least 300 employee representatives from all of Harita Nickel's business units at Site Obi. Also present as observers were representatives from government agencies, including the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Health Agency, and the Environmental Agency (DLH) of South Halmahera Regency, as well as the Kawasi Village Government.

The training scenario involved a high-magnitude earthquake triggering a potential tsunami, directly impacting a number of the company's vital facilities. The series of drills covered several crucial stages, from the activation of the early warning system and mass evacuation to safe assembly points, to victim handling simulations.

Supriyanto Suwarno, Occupational Health and Safety Manager at Harita Nickel, emphasized the importance of this activity. "Obi Island is blessed with beautiful natural scenery and rich natural resources, but it also carries a high potential for disasters with two active faults. As Harita Nickel has significant investments here, we are obligated to protect all our assets: our employees, our facilities, and the sustainability of our business and the surrounding community as part of our corporate social responsibility," he stated.

According to Supriyanto, this LSE represents the culmination of a series of mitigation efforts undertaken by the company. "This training is crucial for enhancing the preparedness of our employees and management. It allows us to identify areas for improvement. According to information from DRRC UI, this is the largest and most complex LSE they have ever facilitated, given the simultaneous involvement of six business units," he added.

During the drill, roles of all elements within the Incident Command System (ICS) structure were rigorously tested. This included the integrated Crisis Management Team (CMT), composed of leaders of each business unit, Incident Commander leading the emergency response team in each unit, as well as activation of the HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials) team, medical teams, and cross-business-unit emergency logistics coordination.

Based on the post-drill evaluation led by Prof. Fatma Lestari, S.Si, M.Si, Ph.D., Head of DRRC at University of Indonesia, several positive outcomes were noted. These included effective functioning of the ICS command structure and flow, an average evacuation time of under 12 minutes—surpassing the set target of 15 minutes—and a field team response that was fully aligned with standard procedures. Additionally, several areas for improvement were identified, such as strengthening personnel capacity and the emergency communication system.

"In our assessment, this activity was 90 percent successful. The remaining 10 percent is attributed to it being a drill, not an actual emergency," Prof. Fatma remarked.

Harita Nickel's proactive measures received high praise from the local government. Riski Triandini Ariesta, Head of Prevention and Preparedness at the South Halmahera BPBD, who attended as an observer, welcomed the initiative.

"We highly appreciate the steps Harita has taken. The business sector plays a vital role in disaster management, as it is a shared responsibility. Based on disaster risk index studies, South Halmahera Regency ranks as the second highest in Indonesia. Drills like this are crucial to ensure that every party knows their duties and responsibilities and does not panic when a disaster occurs," Riski explained.

Her party expressed hope that this collaboration will continue and be strengthened to support a comprehensive disaster management effort.

The successful implementation of this LSE reaffirms Harita Nickel's position as an industry leader that not only focuses on operational performance but also places safety, preparedness, and social responsibility as its top priorities.

Harita Nickel Successfully Holds Large-Scale Emergency Response Drill, Strengthening Disaster Preparedness on Obi Island

Ever imagined a kangaroo-like animal living in trees? Meet the Obi Cuscus (Phalanger rothschildi), a unique, tree-dwelling marsupial endemic to Obi Island and its smaller surrounding islands. Weighing around 1.3 kilograms, this nocturnal creature rests during the day in hidden nests among leaves.

Just like kangaroos, the mother cuscus carries her young in a pouch until they can survive independently. Its brownish-orange or greyish-black fur, yellowish-white belly, and dark back stripe effectively camouflage it within dense foliage.

At night, the Obi Cuscus roams the forest canopy in search of its favorite fruits like betel, kersen (Jamaica cherry), and awar-awar (fig species). Along its journey, it unknowingly helps spread seeds and strengthen forest regeneration. That's why it's considered one of Obi Island's natural seed dispersers.

Although its current conservation status is "Least Concern" according to the IUCN, the Obi Cuscus still faces threats from illegal hunting. Protecting its habitat and educating the community are crucial to maintaining a stable population.

Conserving Obi Island's Endemic Wildlife

As a company operating on Obi Island, Harita Nickel is committed to balancing industrial activities with environmental preservation. The Obi Cuscus is just one of many endemic animals found on Obi Island.

This commitment is realized through various initiatives, ranging from biodiversity monitoring to the gradual and measured rehabilitation of impacted areas. Additionally, environmental education is a vital pillar in Harita Nickel's operations, involving not only Indonesian and foreign employees but also the local community. This underscores Harita Nickel's commitment, along with all its partners, to implement Sustainability and Biodiversity policies, which are the responsibility of everyone within the company.

Sephy Noerfahmy, Conservation Superintendent at Harita Nickel, stated that the company continuously strives to raise awareness about the importance of preserving endemic wildlife among both employees and local communities. “Since the second quarter of 2025, we've regularly conducted educational sessions for school students in Kawasi and Soligi Villages, empowering them as ambassadors for wildlife conservation,” said Sephy.

To date, 90 kindergarten and elementary school students in Kawasi Village have received information about the endemic animals inhabiting the forests and gardens around their homes. This initiative aims to foster pride and awareness of the importance of conservation from a young age.

A work culture that supports animal and habitat preservation continues to be built through regular socialization on the prohibition of wildlife hunting and the importance of maintaining ecosystem balance in mining areas. Harita Nickel believes that sustainability can only be achieved if all elements of the company understand and collectively fulfill their ecological responsibilities.

Through cross-functional collaboration and an adaptive approach, Harita Nickel continues to strive to be part of the solution to ensure that mining activities on Obi Island do not neglect the extraordinary natural heritage surrounding it.

Conserving the Obi Cuscus: Obi Island's Unique Endemic Wildlife

Amid the busy industrial operations on Obi Island, North Maluku, a used oil drum suddenly tipped over, spilling its contents onto the ground. But don’t panic, this wasn’t a real accident. It was part of a hazardous waste (B3) spill response drill conducted by PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), a business unit of Harita Nickel.

In this simulation held within the production area, teams from various departments collaborated efficiently, wearing full protective equipment and following strict emergency procedures.

Muhammad Sulfikar Yona, Environment Compliance Foreman who led the exercise, explained that the simulation aimed to ensure the readiness of all teams in handling unforeseen situations. “We want everyone prepared, not just theoretically, but practically and effectively,” stated Sulfikar.

The drill is part of the implementation of ISO 14001:2015 standards on environmental emergency preparedness and response. “This activity also serves to evaluate the readiness of our equipment and inter-departmental coordination during emergencies,” Sulfikar added.

During the simulation, which took place in the production area, teams from various departments worked shoulder-to-shoulder. The production team moved quickly to contain the spill, while the Environment team supervised and provided technical guidance. Everyone moved in sync, like a well-rehearsed orchestra.

Sulfikar further explained that the drill is conducted at least annually as part of Harita Nickel’s firm commitment to workplace safety and environmental protection. To him, safety and environmental awareness are not the responsibility of one department alone, but a shared duty across the entire organization.

Agung Aribowo, Deputy Department Head of Technical Support at PT HJF, highlighted that the company holds ISO 14001 certification for environmental management and ISO 45001 for occupational safety. These certifications demonstrate that Harita Nickel goes beyond production, ensuring all operational activities are conducted safely, responsibly, and sustainably.

“Simulations like these are not just to fulfill standard obligations but integral to building a robust Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental (OHSE) culture within the company,” Agung explained.

What can be learned from a deliberately spilled oil drum? In the high-risk, end-to-end nickel industry, preparation is everything. Teamwork isn’t just about efficiency, it’s about safety, environmental preservation, and operational continuity.

Ultimately, environmental responsibility is not just the duty of the Environment department, but of all of us, the people of Harita.

Turning Training into Habit: Strengthening HSE Culture at Harita Nickel

As part of a wider commitment to sustainable mining practices, Harita Nickel has built and continues to operate a plant nursery facility that plays a crucial role in the post-mining reclamation process. The facility, named Loji Central Nursery, was inaugurated on January 30, 2025. Here, local and endemic plant seeds are sown and grown into seedlings ready for the regeneration of former mining areas. This facility is not merely an operational complement, but rather forms the basis for ecosystem rehabilitation, reforestation of disturbed land, and comprehensive environmental restoration.

What is a Nursery?

In general, a nursery is a place for processing seeds or other plant materials into seedlings ready for planting. Nurseries can therefore play a critical role in post-mining reclamation activities, as they are the first step in restoring land that has been disturbed by mining activities. Nurseries are not merely a complement to post-mining activities, but a fundamental step towards sustainable reclamation.

Facilities at Harita Nickel’s Loji Central Nursery

The Loji Central Nursery on Obi Island has been revitalized into a modern 2.8-hectare nursery facility with a capacity of up to 400,000 seedlings. By implementing cutting-edge technology, ecosystem-based reclamation techniques, and a commitment to environmental conservation, Harita Nickel has positioned itself as a pioneer in mine reclamation. This extends beyond mere compliance with regulations, by offering a vision for Indonesia's environmental future.

A Closer Look at Harita Nickel's Plant Nursery Facilities for Post-Mining Reclamation

In the metal processing industry, and particularly nickel, the ore smelting process produces a waste material known as slag. Nickel slag has long been considered a useless byproduct of nickel processing. However, with the advent of new technologies and growing awareness of the importance of sustainability, nickel slag is now being utilized as a high-value alternative raw material. From construction to reclamation materials, nickel slag has significant potential to be processed into products that support a circular economy.

Utilizing nickel slag is a strategic step towards reducing environmental impact, lessening the volume of processing waste, and opening up new opportunities in post-mining management. In Indonesia, several mining companies are beginning to seriously implement this approach—including Harita Nickel, known as a pioneer in productive and environmentally friendly nickel slag processing.

What is Nickel Slag?

Nickel slag is a byproduct of the nickel ore smelting process, specifically the production of ferronickel. Slag is formed from elements that do not melt with the primary metal—such as silica, alumina, and magnesium—and which then solidify after cooling.

Slag is invariably considered to be industrial waste. However, if properly managed, it can offer great potential as an alternative construction material, an aggregate substitute, and even as a concrete admixture.

The Potential of Nickel Slag as a Valuable Product

With increasing awareness of industrial efficiency and sustainability, nickel slag is now used in various sectors, such as:

Environmentally friendly building materials (paving slabs, concrete blocks, concrete)

Aggregate replacement in road construction

Mixed materials for the construction of infrastructure

Engineered planting media for reclamation and revegetation

With proper processing, nickel slag can not only reduce the volume of mining waste, but also become a source of high-value materials with a positive environmental impact.

How Does Harita Nickel Manage and Utilize Nickel Slag?

As a nickel mining and processing company that upholds the principles of sustainable mining, Harita Nickel maximizes the potential of nickel slag to support operational activities while protecting the environment.

1. Utilization of Slag for Internal Construction

Nickel slag produced from the processing facility is used to produce construction materials such as paving blocks, concrete blocks, and mixed concrete.

A specific example of this application is the construction of the Loji Central Nursery, a plant nursery facility used for reclamation. The nursery was built with 24,000 paving blocks, 146,000 concrete blocks, and 441 m³ of concrete, all produced using recycled nickel slag.

This initiative demonstrates that slag is not simply waste, but an innovative construction material that can strengthen the company's infrastructure while also reducing its carbon footprint.

2. Supporting Environmentally Friendly Reclamation Programs

Slag is also an integral part of reclamation programs for former mining sites. Harita Nickel uses slag material in the following ways:

To improve the structure of reclaimed land

To help stabilize revegetation areas

To improve access and build supporting infrastructure in reclamation areas

This utilization is carried out in an integrated manner, and in line with good mining practices (GMP).

3. Sustainable Innovations in Waste Management

Harita Nickel continues to research and develop innovations to expand the use of slag, including its potential applications in the national construction industry. This approach aligns with:

The principles of a circular economy

The reduction of industrial waste

The efficient utilization of resources

The Economic and Environmental Benefits of Slag Utilization

Harita Nickel's utilization of nickel slag doesn’t just provide an innovative solution for industrial waste management—it also offers a range of positive sustainable impacts. Previously considered a waste product from the smelting process, slag is now reused for various purposes, including as a building material. This approach lowers production costs, while also significantly reducing the volume of solid waste that must be landfilled. Furthermore, the use of slag in infrastructure development supports greener and more environmentally friendly development. The economic value of this smelting waste also increases, making it part of a broader value chain. This utilization aligns with applicable environmental and mining regulations and strengthens the company's image as an industry player committed to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles.

Nickel slag is not simply waste, but a hidden asset that can be transformed into high-value products—if managed wisely. Harita Nickel is a clear example of how a mining company can implement sustainable innovations, by transforming slag into useful materials and thereby contributing to environmental recovery.

By continuing to develop processing technology and expanding the use of slag in operational and reclamation activities, Harita Nickel underscores its role as an industrial player that is not only efficient, but also committed to being responsible for the future of the Earth.

Getting to Know Nickel Slag: The Nickel Processing Byproduct That’s Becoming a High-Value Product

Harita Nickel has solidified its role as a pioneer in Indonesia’s electric vehicle battery materials industry by upholding a strong commitment to sustainable operations. Residual materials from the High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) process are managed in a dedicated and environmentally safe manner, and even reused for operational needs.

Tailing, a byproduct of the extraction process for Nickel (Ni) and Cobalt (Co) from limonite ore, takes the form of slurry—a thick mixture of solid particles and liquid resembling mud. There have been circulating allegations claiming that Harita Nickel pollutes the environment by dumping tailings into the sea, with even more alarming claims that these tailings contain heavy metals and toxic substances.

In reality, Harita Nickel manages tailings from the HPAL process by solidifying them through a Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF). First, the tailings are neutralized to eliminate any toxins resulting from acid leaching. Then, the solid and liquid fractions are separated using a filter press. The liquid portion is further treated in a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), while the solid fraction (dry tailings), with a moisture content of about 30%, is compacted and placed in former mining areas to ensure ground stability.

This DSTF method of tailings management was first implemented in Indonesia by Harita Nickel. The operational costs are far from cheap. For illustration, with an annual tailings output of 8.6 million tons from the HPAL plant operated by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), a total of 300 workers are employed across five divisions: Geotechnical Engineering, Hydrology & Hydrogeology, Tailing Facility Planning, DSTF Earthwork, and Leachate Treatment Plant.

Filter press used to separate solid and liquid fractions of HPAL tailings

“The biggest challenge is the high rainfall, especially given the open area,” Nanang Koswara, DSTF Earthwork Supervisor, explained.

So what happens to the dry tailing placement areas when it rains, given they are in open spaces? The tailings placement facility is equipped with drainage systems, leachate collection ponds, buttresses (retaining walls), groundwater monitoring wells, and tools to monitor water quality and soil stability.

In areas with high rainfall, maintaining the slope stability of tailings piles is essential, as the dry tailing material is sensitive to water content changes. To ensure that the piles remain stable and safe, the Geotechnical Division team constantly monitors compaction levels, controls the geometry of the piles, and provides recommendations on safe placement zones for tailings.

The geotechnical team conducting soil stability measurements to ensure the ground can support the tailings pile securely.

“In addition, routine daily monitoring by the geotechnical team is conducted to mitigate potential landslide risks early on. We are committed to ensuring that dry tail placement operations remain safe and smooth,” said Agus Budi Prastyo, Instrument & Geotechnical Supervisor.

While heavy rainfall can benefit the nickel laterite formation process, it also demands special handling of runoff and groundwater—especially in dry tailing storage areas. Improper handling can lead to landslides and environmental contamination.

This is where the Hydrology & Hydrogeology team plays a key role—ensuring runoff water is managed properly and does not interfere with tailings placement activities. Despite high rainfall, operations continue safely and remain free from pollution risks.

“Water quality monitoring is conducted daily at both the inlet and outlet. The testing includes metal content, in situ parameters, and laboratory tests by an external lab,” explained Rahma Maulida, Laboratory Assistant Engineer of the Leachate Treatment Plant Division.

Turning Tailing into Opportunity

The Obi Fishing Tournament 2025 organized by Harita Nickel on June 14-15 brought an unexpectedly meaningful moment in marine conservation. One participant, Zulfikri R. Salim, caught a tiger shark, an apex predator not listed among the competition’s targeted species. Following sustainable fishing practices enforced by the tournament regulations, the shark was immediately released back into its natural habitat.

The organizers awarded Zulfikri with a special recognition, the "Unique Catch" category, highlighting not only the sportsmanship and compliance of participants with sustainable fishing rules but also sending a powerful message about the importance of marine life conservation around Obi Island.

Juvenile or young Napoleon wrasse found in the waters surrounding Harita Nickel’s operations on Obi Island.

“The presence of tiger sharks indicates a balanced marine ecosystem that continues to support large marine species. This is an essential positive indicator for us as we strive to operate responsibly and sustainably,” explained Aldico Satria Ganesa, Marine Ecology Foreman at Harita Nickel.

The richness of Obi Island’s marine biodiversity is further demonstrated by the discovery of other significant species during marine ecology monitoring around Kawasi Village waters. Notably, the Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), a giant reef fish capable of reaching lengths of up to two meters and weighing up to 190 kilograms, inhabits these waters.

Known for being docile and often approaching divers, the Napoleon wrasse has a unique characteristic: it's a hermaphroditic species, capable of changing sex from female to male. It also plays a vital role as a natural predator of sea urchins and crown-of-thorns starfish, two species that can damage reefs if their populations are uncontrolled.

There's also the green humphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon muricatum), locally known as "ikan mami" or "tabongkula." This largest parrotfish species is known for its strong teeth and head, capable of biting and crushing dead coral into white sand grains. Though rarely seen, specimens over three feet long are still occasionally encountered in Obi's waters, indicating that the coral reef conditions in this area remain supportive of large species sensitive to environmental pressure.

The Fishing Tournament held this year by Harita Nickel in collaboration with local residents confirmed that the waters of Obi remain productive.

"The underwater beauty of West Obi Island is like a mesmerizing natural gallery. This area is also an important habitat for various key species, such as Napoleon wrasse, groupers, and reef sharks, indicating a well-maintained ecosystem," Aldico added.

With such extraordinary biodiversity, Harita Nickel remains firmly committed to operating responsibly and sustainably, supporting conservation initiatives for a better future in Obi Island.

Obi's Marine Biodiversity: From Tiger Sharks to Napoleon Wrasse

Demonstrating its commitment to employee safety and operational sustainability, Harita Nickel, in collaboration with the Disaster Risk Reduction Center (DRRC) of the University of Indonesia, will organize a Large-Scale Exercise (LSE) or Integrated Disaster Management and Emergency Response Simulation at its operational site on Obi Island from July 27–29, 2025.

Carrying the theme "Integrated Management of Natural and Technological Disasters," this LSE is an advanced development of the company’s routine emergency drills, designed to further strengthen preparedness and response capabilities.

The Command Center serves as the central hub for monitoring, managing, and controlling operational activities in an emergency.

This LSE, themed "Integrated Management of Natural and Technological Disasters", builds upon routine drills to enhance the team's readiness and response capabilities in emergency situations. The exercise will involve employees from various departments across all business units, who will participate as emergency response task forces as well as simulated victims.

According to Supriyanto Suwarno, Occupational Health and Safety Manager at Harita Nickel, the drill scenario is a complex disaster within the downstream nickel and cobalt industry. It will simulate an earthquake followed by a tsunami, causing operational disruptions and employee casualties. Additionally, this disaster triggers a Natech (Natural Hazard Triggering Technological Disaster) incident, involving power disruptions and potential gas leaks in the acid plant area.

"This LSE will be conducted simultaneously across all business units to test the coordination and rapid response capabilities of all teams. This activity is purely preventive and aims to enhance the company's capability in managing emergency situations," explained Supriyanto.

At its core, our emergency response drill is driven by the mission to safely rescue both employees and company assets, ensuring no injuries occur. Achieving this requires careful, accurate execution and the swift readiness of our well-trained teams.

He further added that the scenario was developed based on a thorough study by DRRC UI, as part of a meticulously planned mitigation effort. This training reflects the company's proactive approach to anticipate and manage various risks systematically.

Preparations for the LSE have been underway since June 2025. The task force structure involves departmental representatives from all business units. Adhering to the Incident Command System (ICS), a recognized standard in emergency management, the task force is divided into four divisions: Operations, Planning, Logistics, and Administration.

"Given the vast and complex nature of our operations here, an integrated emergency response task force involving all business units is crucial," stated Erich Marvin Rizal Mongdong, the field coordinator for the exercise. "While we routinely conduct small-scale drills, this large-scale integrated simulation will further strengthen our team's readiness for real-world emergencies."

During the emergency response drill, Harita Nickel's Emergency Response Team conducted a casualty evacuation, simulating a pipeline leak scenario at a fuel dispensing station.

Prior to the main exercise, the team conducted a Table Top Exercise and a Document Review Exercise, guided by DRRC University of Indonesia on July 24, 2025. These preliminary steps aimed to ensure the effectiveness of the ICS in a multi-hazard scenario and the readiness of standard operating procedure documents for each unit.

“During the simulation, participants will be evaluated by external observers from DRRC UI and relevant stakeholders from the South Halmahera Regency and North Maluku Provincial Governments,” Erich noted, highlighting three key objectives of emergency management: (1) ensuring employee safety, (2) protecting company assets, and (3) guaranteeing operational continuity post-disaster.

Through this large-scale emergency response simulation, Harita Nickel advances its capabilities in mitigating and managing workplace risks, reinforcing its commitment to occupational safety and operational sustainability.

Enhance Preparedness, Harita Nickel Conduct Large-Scale Integrated Emergency Response Exercise

At first glance, coral reefs may appear to be nothing more than colorful rocks beneath the sea. In reality, they are the foundation of marine life—providing food, shelter, and protection for more than 25% of the world’s marine species.

Indonesia is home to the largest expanse of coral reefs in the world, covering an estimated 51,000 square kilometers—around 18% of the world’s total coral reef area, which spans approximately 284,300 square kilometers. Even more remarkable, Indonesia is located within the Coral Triangle, making its reefs not only vast but also incredibly diverse.

What Are Coral Reefs?

Coral reefs are natural structures formed by colonies of tiny marine animals called coral polyps, which live in symbiosis with microalgae known as zooxanthellae. These colonies deposit calcium carbonate as they grow, creating the hard surfaces that serve as a habitat for thousands of marine species.

Interestingly, coral polyps belong to the phylum Cnidaria, which also includes jellyfish—making them distant relatives!

The Ecological and Socio-Economic Value of Coral Reefs

Coral reefs provide vital benefits to both marine ecosystems and human communities:

1. The Ecological Benefits

Biodiversity hotspot
More than 25% of marine species—including fish, mollusks, turtles, and microorganisms—depend on coral reefs for survival.

Coastal protection
Coral reefs help break the force of waves, reducing coastal erosion and protecting communities from tidal flooding. Studies show that reefs can dissipate up to 97% of wave energy.

Ecosystem balance
Coral reefs play a key role in the marine food chain and nutrient cycling.

2. Socio-Economic Benefits

Livelihoods for coastal communities
Many local fishermen rely on fish species that inhabit coral reefs.

Marine tourism
Destinations such as Raja Ampat, Bunaken, and Wakatobi are renowned for their spectacular coral reefs, creating significant opportunities in tourism and boosting local economies.

Types of Coral Reefs

Coral reefs are generally classified into three main types:

Fringing Reefs
Found along coastlines and accessible, these reefs are popular snorkeling sites.

Barrier Reefs
Separated from the shore by a deep lagoon. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is a famous example.

Atolls
Circular reefs that form around sunken volcanic islands, often enclosing a central lagoon.

Harita Nickel’s Commitment to Coral Reef Conservation

Coral Reefs: Definition, Benefits, and Harita Nickel’s Role in Their Preservation

In commemoration of World Environment Day (WED) 2025, Harita Nickel once again held its Harita Mengajar (Harita Teaching) program. In this knowledge-sharing initiative, Harita Nickel employees educate students living near the company’s operations. This year’s theme was “Stop Plastic Pollution.” The educational session targeted students from Loji Permai Junior High School and Tunas Muda Senior High School in Kawasi Village, Obi Island, South Halmahera, and took place on Monday, June 16, at the New Kawasi Village Health Sub-Center hall.

Aldico Putra Ganesha, chairperson of this event, explained that the program was specifically designed to instill environmental awareness in the younger generation from an early age. “We believe that significant change can begin with simple actions, like throwing waste in the right place, reducing the use of single-use plastics, and spreading this awareness to family and the wider community,” Aldico stated.

The first session was led by Lentina Simangunsong from Harita Nickel’s Environment Compliance and Reporting team. She explained the types of plastics, their non-biodegradable nature, and the environmental harm they cause. “Single-use plastics may be convenient, but their ecological footprint can last longer than a human lifetime,” she emphasized.

The second session was presented by Ricky Danang Pratama, a Conservation Specialist at Harita Nickel, who discussed the impact of waste on biodiversity. Ricky shared real-life examples, ranging from sea turtles entangled in plastic nets to land animals like monkeys injured by human waste. “By understanding real-world cases, we hope students become more aware that small actions can have a significant impact on the environment around them,” Ricky explained.

The event became even more engaging when students showcased creative products made from waste materials collected in their surroundings. These included pencil holders made from used bottles, piggy banks from cans, tissue boxes, and wall decorations crafted from inorganic waste. The creations not only demonstrated creativity but also served as proof that waste can be repurposed when approached with awareness and care.

Servin Langkodi, Principal of Loji Permai Junior High School, expressed his appreciation during his opening remarks. “From this event, we hope students truly understand that protecting the environment is their responsibility to the Earth and the future. Hopefully, this will be the first step toward making them agents of change in their communities,” he said.

Through the Harita Mengajar program, Harita Nickel emphasizes the importance of providing environmental education to school students. By engaging the younger generation, the company hopes the spirit of environmental stewardship will not end with this event, but will grow into a lasting awareness throughout Kawasi and its surrounding areas.
