At Harita Nickel, knowledge and technology transfer is more than just a policy on paper — it’s a daily reality. Through close collaboration between Foreign Workers (TKA) and Indonesian Workers (TKI), local employees are becoming increasingly independent and now play key roles in the operation of smelters at the Obi Island site.
In the control room, they exchange insights on furnace operation; in the production area, local employees perform their tasks confidently without waiting for direction from foreign counterparts. From these everyday interactions, Harita Nickel’s commitment to real technology transfer takes shape.
According to Li Shi Zhong, Production Superintendent at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), knowledge transfer happens directly on the ground, starting from the most technical work levels. “For example, on the fifth floor in the electrode paste section, local workers must understand essential concepts such as the suspension system and how to adjust electrode height to maintain smelting stability,” he explained.

Beyond mastering technical operations, local employees are trained in daily measurements, workplace cleanliness, and operational reporting. In material processing, intensive coaching is provided so that employees can recognize material surface conditions, control negative pressure, determine hourly discharge volumes, and regulate vertical flow inside the furnace — ensuring they fully understand every operational aspect.
“Tasks like iron tapping and slag discharge, which used to be handled only by Chinese workers, are now entirely managed by local employees,” Li said.
He added that teamwork among operators in the field has also grown stronger. “Even crane and calcine inspection operators can now coordinate and work independently, without direct supervision from foreign workers,” he continued.
Li noted that this progress is also supported by the local workforce’s adaptability and growing communication skills. “Previously, translators were needed for coordination. Now, local employees can communicate directly in Mandarin, which has made work much more efficient,” he explained.
“In the control room, for instance, one Chinese supervisor can now oversee two furnaces at once, while all the operators are local employees. We only review the final data and reports,” Li added.
The impact of this transfer is also reflected in the declining number of foreign workers. “Previously, there were more than 300 Chinese employees in this area. Now, only about 70 remain, and some of them will soon be reassigned. There’s almost no new recruitment of foreign workers, the focus now is on hiring and developing local talent,” Li emphasized.

The story of Hirawati, a production staff member from Makassar, is a testament to this success. A graduate of the Management Trainee program, she now works in the Central Control Room after nearly three years of cross-cultural learning. “At first, I didn’t know anything. But through mentorship and hands-on experience, I’ve become more independent and can now communicate directly with foreign colleagues,” she shared.
For Ira, learning Mandarin became a turning point in her career. “At first, I didn’t understand a single word, but daily interaction helped me learn on my own. Now, communication is easier and work runs more smoothly,” she said.
The daily collaboration between foreign and local employees at Harita Nickel proves that technology transfer is not just a promise — it’s happening on the ground. From the production floor to the control room, the results are clear: Indonesian employees are becoming increasingly self-reliant and ready to take on bigger roles in smelter operations.

Technology Transfer at Harita Nickel Strengthens Local Employee Empowerment

Harita Nickel’s Management Trainee (MT) Program has opened the door for hundreds of young people from North Maluku to build professional careers in the nickel industry. Through this program, a new generation of talent is emerging, individuals who not only master technical competencies but also bring fresh energy to the core of Indonesia’s strategic mineral downstreaming.
One such talent is Fitria Eka Ananda Tan, a young woman from Ternate who never imagined herself pursuing a career in nickel processing. After completing her studies and gaining experience in several roles, Eka decided to apply for the MT program offered by PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), one of Harita Nickel’s business units on Obi Island.
“I thought at the time, this is a rare opportunity. And it turned out to be true, there are so many things I’ve learned here,” she said.
As an MT participant, Eka underwent a series of intensive training sessions, ranging from orientation and operational fundamentals to project management within a dynamic industrial setting. “The training was semi-military and quite demanding, especially for women. But there were no distinctions; everyone was treated the same because we were all trainees,” she recalled.

Through this process, participants developed discipline, solidarity, and a strong sense of responsibility. Harita Nickel designed the MT program to prepare young talent to become future leaders, equipping them not only with technical knowledge but also with the company’s core values: Humility, Achievement Oriented, Respect, Integrity, Teamwork, and Accountability.
“We learned a lot about leadership, how to lead a team, make decisions, and work with dedication,” Eka said.
Now, after a decade with Harita Nickel, Eka believes the experience has transformed her perspective on professional life. “This program was not just the start of a career; it was a journey of discovering myself,” she noted.
Eka’s story aligns with those of two of her batchmates, Faisal A. Banjar and Majid Masyud, who now serve in MSP’s Power Plant Department. Faisal recalled joining the first MT selection in 2015, which attracted nearly a thousand applicants. “The competition was incredibly tough, and I’m grateful I made it through,” he said.
After three months of semi-military training on Obi Island and completing a Mandarin language course, Faisal and his fellow trainees were sent to China for advanced training at a smelter facility. There, they gained knowledge in electrical systems, emission control, and a strong work ethic.
“For me, MSP feels like a second home. I hope more young people from North Maluku can have the same opportunity,” he added.
Meanwhile, Majid Masyud from Bacan described the MT experience as an invaluable learning journey. “Beyond technical knowledge, what stood out most was the camaraderie and mutual support among participants. Those experiences shaped how we work professionally today,” he said.
According to Willy Kusuma Dewadi, Head of Technical Support at PT MSP, the company continues to provide pathways for local youth to grow their careers and play a leading role in technology transfer from foreign experts to Indonesian professionals.

The Spirit of Indonesia’s Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda) came alive at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) employee complex, where hundreds of young Harita Nickel employees gathered for Youth Forum 2025. Carrying the theme “The Voice of Indonesian Youth: Echoing Through Creative Content,” the event became a platform for Harita’s young talents to learn, share, and ignite inspiration through digital creativity.
Unlike previous events, this Youth Forum offered a fresh and vibrant festival-style concept. In collaboration with Hero Creative, Harita Nickel’s internal creative team, the event combined inspirational talks, live music performances, and local culinary delights. Strings of colorful lights and lanterns illuminated the path to the main stage, setting a lively and youthful tone for the evening.
The event opened with acoustic performances and stand-up comedy, breaking the ice and drawing laughter from the crowd. Amid applause and conversation, employees from various Harita Nickel business units enjoyed an array of food stalls spread across the venue.

In his opening remarks, Roy Martua Sigiro, Deputy Head of Technical Support at PT Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS), emphasized that the Youth Forum serves as a platform to spark enthusiasm and unlock the potential of Harita Nickel’s young generation.
“Through this Youth Forum, we want to show that the voices of Harita Nickel’s youth don’t stop within the Obi site—they resonate outward, reaching families, friends, and the wider community. The spirit of collaboration and idea-sharing is the key to building a strong and highly competitive team,” he said.
The inspiration-sharing session, led by Yoan Isey Jeaniti, Digital &amp; Social Media Manager of Harita Nickel, featured three creative content creators: Marischka Prudence (Prue), Febrian, and Kadek Arini. They shared best practices on crafting compelling hooks, structuring stories, maintaining stylistic consistency, and building community trust authentically.
Prue underscored the power of storytelling in delivering impactful messages, citing the Koin untuk Prita movement as an example of digital solidarity creating real social change.&nbsp;

Febrian, known for his environmental and social narratives, shared practical tips for crafting compelling stories. “Start with the most engaging part as your hook—make your audience curious enough to follow until the end,” he advised.
Meanwhile, Kadek Arini emphasized the importance of building value-based digital communities rooted in trust. “Trust is the foundation of a community. When you hold onto your values and integrity, your audience will believe in you and move together to create positive change,” she said.
During their visit to Obi, the speakers also toured the mining and processing facilities, explored Obi’s natural beauty, and met beneficiaries of Harita Nickel’s Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) programs.
Their messages echoed the spirit of Youth Pledge Day, inspiring Harita Nickel’s young generation to take initiative, speak up, and keep learning. “Don’t be afraid to start—small actions can make a big impact,” said Febrian.

Meanwhile, Christoforus Nanda Rahardian, Employee Relations Specialist at Harita Nickel, described the event as both entertaining and educational. “Youth Forum successfully delivered an engaging event for the younger generation—entertaining yet full of meaningful insights,” he noted.

Harita Nickel’s commitment to ensuring employee health and safety goes beyond systems and facilities—it is embodied by the medical professionals who serve with empathy. One of them is Christian Mamuaya, Medical Supervisor at Harita Nickel Obi Clinic (KHNO), who instills compassion and humanity in every aspect of healthcare delivery.<o:p></o:p>
Since joining the company in 2020, the Manado-born professional has worked to provide healthcare services that are not only swift and responsive but also empathetic toward every individual he cares for.<o:p></o:p>
When Christian first arrived at Site&nbsp;Obi, the company clinic was modest, consisting of only five rooms and a handful of medical staff. Today, KHNO has grown into a much more comprehensive health facility with more than 80 medical personnel, multiple treatment rooms, and various supporting amenities.<o:p></o:p>

However, for Christian, progress is not measured merely by physical expansion but by the quality of relationships between medical staff and patients.&nbsp;“What matters most isn’t just the facilities—it’s how we treat those who come to us for help,” he said.<o:p></o:p>
Christian firmly believes that empathy lies at the heart of healthcare. He vividly recalls one experience that reshaped his perspective as a medical professional—when he treated a foreign worker struggling with depression during the pandemic. The patient had withdrawn completely, refusing to interact or even eat.<o:p></o:p>
“The solution wasn’t medication—it was empathy. I brought him some red sticky rice porridge and simply talked with him. From there, he started to open up and accept help,” he recalled.<o:p></o:p>
For Christian, moments like these affirm that empathy can be the most fundamental form of healing.&nbsp;“Sometimes, people don’t need a complex diagnosis—they just need to be heard. And that alone can make them feel better,” he added.<o:p></o:p>
This belief is what Christian continuously imparts to his team at KHNO: that every medical action must be accompanied by genuine care. Over time, he has strengthened this culture of empathetic service through regular training and daily practice, ensuring that every medical professional understands the importance of compassionate communication—especially when dealing with patients under physical or emotional stress.<o:p></o:p>

Beyond the clinic, Christian also encourages all employees across work areas to be prepared for emergencies through First Aid Training&nbsp;and regular Health Talk&nbsp;programs. To him, occupational safety and health are not just procedures, but a shared responsibility rooted in mutual care.<o:p></o:p>
At the same time, he has built an efficient clinic management system to ensure that promotive, preventive, and curative health services are delivered consistently and sustainably. His dedication earned him the Best Employee 2022&nbsp;award from PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL).<o:p></o:p>
“The key isn’t just me—it’s teamwork. Without it, none of this would be possible,” he said.<o:p></o:p>
For Christian, awards are not the ultimate goal. His greatest achievement is seeing patients recover, employees feel safe, and everyone confident that there will always be medical staff ready to help them wholeheartedly.[]<o:p></o:p>

Christian Mamuaya: Delivering Healthcare with Empathy

Harita Nickel has once again launched the Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI) 2025, its annual program designed to foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement across all employees.&nbsp;
This year, HCI introduces a new category: Risk Mitigation &amp; Process Improvement. This addition complements the existing category of Productivity &amp; Cost Efficiency, responding to the need for ideas that not only enhance efficiency but also strengthen the company’s resilience and work processes.
Rifky Aksara, Business Control Improvement Expert at Harita Nickel, explained: “Continuous improvement is not only about reducing costs, but also about managing risks smartly. With this new category, HCI becomes more inclusive, opening opportunities not only for production and technical departments but also for non-technical teams that contribute to process enhancement.”&nbsp;
The proposal submission period runs from October 1 to November 30, 2025, and is open to all Harita Nickel employees, whether based at sites, the head office, or representative offices.&nbsp;
Proposals should be practical, easily implementable, non-CapEx (not requiring significant capital expenditure), OpEx-based, and must demonstrate measurable benefits.&nbsp;
Each team should consist of three to six members, may involve cross-department collaboration, and can include both local and expatriate employees. Proposals submitted in previous years may be resubmitted, provided they were not selected as winners.&nbsp;
Participants are grouped into four business clusters: PT TBP (including PT GPS), PT HPL (PT ONC, PT DCM), PT HJF (PT KPS, PT OST), and PT MSP. Last year, HCI 2024 recorded more than 100 innovation proposals, reflecting the strong enthusiasm of Harita employees to innovate.&nbsp;
Topan Prasetyo, Business Controller at Harita Nickel, emphasized that the essence of HCI lies not merely in personal recognition or attractive rewards, but in driving the company’s long-term sustainability.&nbsp;
“Our current focus is on changing mindsets and behaviors regarding the importance of continuous improvement, not only at the management level but across all levels of the organization,” Topan stated.&nbsp;
He further expressed his hope for greater participation and higher-quality ideas this year. “The mission of HCI 2025 is to transform together, learn together, and grow together. Through HCI, let us transform, learn, and grow as one,” he concluded.

HCI 2025 Introduces New Category, Strengthening Innovation and Continuous Improvement Culture

Everyone’s professional journey is unique. Some start with a wealth of experience, while others build their careers from the ground up. Rudianto Sapsuha belongs to the latter group. Beginning his academic life studying Information Technology, he transitioned to a crucial role within Harita Nickel's Fire Emergency Service (FES). This unit serves as the front line for readiness and response to a wide range of emergencies, from fire incidents to first aid.
The shift from the world of computers to life-saving operations was a foreign one for him, but it has since become a significant part of his life. This is where Rudianto's new journey began.
For Rudianto, the first challenge was adaptation. “The most significant initial challenge was adapting. This was my first experience working in an industrial environment,” he recalls. However, it was precisely there that he found learning opportunities he had never imagined.
He states that Harita Nickel is not just a workplace but also a space to hone skills. He has participated in various training programs, from firefighter certification to Water Rescue training with the National SAR Agency in Ternate. These opportunities have not only expanded his knowledge but also strengthened his role as a key figure in corporate safety.
His career has grown through the different training programs facilitated by the company. Rudianto has directly experienced the impact: increased confidence and more open opportunities for continuous development. “The most interesting thing about Harita Nickel is the opportunity to learn and innovate, especially given my background is not from the nickel industry,” he says.
For Rudianto, the key to success at Harita Nickel is simple yet fundamental: continuous learning, prayer, growth, and maintaining professionalism. These are the same values he applies to building camaraderie with his FES team members. “Communication and teamwork are very important. But what makes me most comfortable here is the sense of family,” he states.
Workplace safety is also a non-negotiable aspect of his job. He emphasizes that safety is not just a company priority but a personal principle that allows him to work with peace of mind. “Workplace safety is extremely important. There is no negotiation,” he stresses.
Behind his determination lies a source of constant inspiration: his family, senior colleagues, and supervisors who guide his every step. As a native of North Maluku, he has a message for the younger generation: “Harita Nickel is always open. Especially for us, as sons and daughters of the region, we have priority and a golden opportunity to learn, grow, and build a career here.”
Rudianto’s story is a reminder that opportunities are always available to those who are willing to try and never stop learning. With a willingness to learn and a professional attitude, anyone has the chance to grow, even in a world that initially seems strange.

PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) hosted the Street Food Night Market on September 12–13, 2025, at the employee housing area. The event was designed to provide employees with a vibrant culinary experience while supporting CSR-assisted MSMEs and local business partners.
A wide range of street food was served, from chicken sempol and grilled meatballs to coffee, burgers, and grilled chicken. The food stands were run by catering vendors, minimarket partners, and CSR-supported MSMEs, each bringing their own specialties. This transformed the Street Food Night Market into more than just a culinary event, it became a hub connecting employees with local business partners.
Beyond food, entertainment such as live music and dance enlivened the evening. The sound of guitars and songs accompanied employees relaxing in the open-air area, many of them enjoying the dishes while sharing moments with colleagues. The vibrant atmosphere truly embodied the spirit of the Street Food Night Market.
Positive feedback came from Witri Iskandar, an employee of PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), one of Harita Nickel’s business units operating on Obi Island. Despite living in a mess located some distance away, he made time to attend with his friends. “The event was exciting, it felt just like a street food festival in the city. It was refreshing to spend time with friends here, and there were so many food options to choose from,” she said.
Witri’s presence underscored that the Street Food Night Market not only fostered togetherness among HJF employees but also attracted enthusiasm from employees of other Harita Nickel units operating at Obi Site.
Christoforus Nanda Rahadian, Industrial Relations &amp; Employee Relations Specialist at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel and the program coordinator, explained the main purpose of the event. “We wanted to create a more lively atmosphere at the mess so that employees feel more at home despite working in a remote area,” he said.

A native of Tobelo, Niksen joined Harita Nickel in 2016 as part of the planting and garden maintenance crew in the Human Resources & General Affairs (HRGA) Department of PT Megah Surya Pertiwi, a business unit of Harita Nickel. Two years later, he moved to the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Department, a small step that sparked a life-changing transformation.

“Before joining Harita Nickel, I hunted for food to sell, so my family could survive. I didn’t know those animals were protected,” Niksen recalls.

Working with the Environment team changed his perspective. The forest was no longer just a hunting ground, it became a sanctuary for endangered species. The change was not instant; Niksen faced inner struggles every time he released an animal he had caught.

According to Agung Sunardi Munim, HSE Supervisor at Harita Nickel, Niksen’s hunting background turned out to be an asset. “He knows exactly where the animals are. At first, it was hard for him to let them go, but now he is at the forefront of the fight against wildlife poaching,” he said.

Today, Niksen has not only given up hunting but also actively monitors the Obi cuscus (Phalanger rothschildi) and sailfin lizard (Hydrosaurus weberi), two endemic species found only on the island.

His transformation mirrors Harita Nickel’s broader efforts to protect biodiversity, through regular monitoring, habitat restoration, and community education. Since the second quarter of 2025, the conservation team has been delivering wildlife preservation lessons to students in Kawasi and Soligi villages. To date, 90 kindergarten and elementary school students have learned about the animals in their surroundings.

Sephy Noerfahmy, Conservation Superintendent at Harita Nickel, emphasizes the role of education. “Niksen’s story proves that knowledge can turn a hunter into a protector,” she said.

Now, when Niksen enters the forest, he carries a torch and a notebook&mdash;not a rifle. He looks for signs of the very creatures he once pursued, ensuring they remain. For Niksen, within every thick branch and whisper of the night lies Obi Island’s future&mdash;one he hopes to pass on, alive and whole, to generations to come.

Many people think working in the nickel industry is only about mining or operating heavy equipment. In fact, Harita Nickel is an integrated company&mdash;not only mining, but also processing and refining nickel into higher-value products. This complexity is experienced by Almendo Lasera, a young talent from North Maluku who is now a Foreman at the Acid Plant, Production Department.
As a graduate of Sam Ratulangi University in Manado, with a major in Chemistry (2015–2020), Almendo views his career journey at Harita Nickel as a valuable opportunity to sharpen both his technical and leadership skills. In his daily work, he is responsible for ensuring that production processes at the Acid Plant run according to parameters and standard operating procedures (SOP). Precision is crucial, since even the smallest mistake can affect both the equipment and the final product. The Acid Plant operates to produce sulfuric acid for the High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) process, which is then used to create raw materials for Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) batteries for electric vehicles.

Although his main focus is smooth production, Almendo emphasizes that workplace safety is the top priority. He wants to ensure that every team member can work safely and return home without risk of accidents. For him, safety is not just a rule, but a personal awareness that must be ingrained in every individual. “If we are aware that safety is important, naturally we will safeguard it, both for ourselves and for our colleagues,” he explained.

Leading a diverse team of local employees and expatriates has given him valuable lessons. This requires him to be patient, open-minded, and adaptable to ensure effective teamwork.&nbsp; For Almendo, being a foreman is not only about giving directions but also about listening to team members so they feel respected and valued.

For Almendo, technical knowledge matters, but soft skills and the willingness to learn are the real keys to success. He encourages the youth of North Maluku to dare to try and always be prepared for opportunities that arise. “This company values people with potential. What matters most is being ready when the opportunity comes,” he said.

Behind his dedication at work, Almendo always keeps his family as his main source of inspiration. His wife, child, and parents motivate him to continue growing with Harita Nickel. Through his role in the Acid Plant, he contributes to a modern process that transforms nickel ore into an essential material for the electric vehicle battery industry. From Obi Island, Almendo proves that the young generation of North Maluku can make real contributions to this strategic national industry&mdash;through a willingness to learn, the courage to adapt, and the determination to always give their best.&nbsp;

Harita Nickel has once again launched Harita Saruma, a digital creativity training and development program for Insan Harita (Harita personnel). Now in its second batch, the program serves as a collaborative space to learn how to create visual content that is relevant, ethical, and positively impacts both the company’s and individual’s image.
“Harita Saruma is a shared learning space to create content that is not only engaging but also responsible. The materials cover the basics of photography and videography, visual storytelling, as well as brand safety principles and adherence to the company’s social media guidelines, ensuring every work aligns with Harita’s values,” said Casandra Gitaputri, Digital & Social Media Superintendent at Harita Nickel.

For Andra, employees&mdash;known within the company as Insan Harita&mdash;can gain experience, expand their networks, and take on a greater role in the company by contributing meaningful content.

This batch featured Aqil Muhamad Affif, a content creator known for his stunning visuals from around the world. Through photography techniques, storytelling, and tips on building a creator’s identity, Aqil encouraged participants to see social media not merely as a platform for sharing, but as a space to build positive influence.

For one participant, Wigit Sukmawan, Community Relations Supervisor, the experience was invaluable. “Harita Saruma 2025 is full of energy, inspiration, and collaboration. I see it as the first step towards continuous learning, sharing, and growing together in the spirit of impactful communication,” he said.&nbsp;

Learning directly from practitioners like Aqil provided a fresh perspective on effective digital communication, not just as a sharing platform, but as a space for building positive influence.

The program also encouraged cross-unit participation at Harita Nickel, including employees from PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) like Febriyani Sillia. “Through Harita Saruma, I met many new friends from other business units. I gained experience and more friends,” she said. Febriyani appreciated the program, noting that there are many positive ways Insan Harita can introduce Harita Nickel to the public through social media.

Harita Saruma stands as a tangible example of Harita Nickel’s commitment to providing an inclusive work environment that supports employee potential development.
