Improvement does not always begin with a major change. Often, it starts with a simple observation at work: a process that could be made safer, time that could be saved, or a way of working that could be more effective. This is where Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI) gives Harita employees the opportunity to turn ideas into meaningful impact.

HCI is part of Harita Nickel’s effort to foster a culture of continuous improvement across the organisation. This year, HCI features two categories: Risk Mitigation & Process Improvement and Productivity & Cost Efficiency. Both create space for ideas that not only improve efficiency, but also strengthen safety, risk management, process quality, and operational sustainability.

Following the proposal judging stage, HCI has now moved into the presentation phase. In the Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) business cluster, 10 proposals across the two categories have been presented. Presentations at Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) and Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) are also underway, while Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP) is scheduled to hold its presentations in early September.

The range of ideas demonstrates that opportunities to improve can be found in everyday work, from optimising processes and resources to managing risks and promoting more sustainable practices.

When Improvement Becomes the Way We Work

HCI is more than a competition to select the best ideas. It encourages Harita employees to look at their work more critically, understand the root causes of challenges, and develop solutions that respond to real needs in the field.

“Continuous Improvement must be an ongoing process. We need to keep improving and never stop adapting,” said Kiagus Muhammad Firdaus, Deputy Head of Site at PT TBP.

Agung Aribowo, Deputy Head of Technical Support at PT HJF, sees HCI in much the same way. He believes its strength lies in encouraging Insan Harita to turn challenges in the field into opportunities for improvement.

“Improvement becomes more meaningful when it comes from real needs in the field. We encourage our people not only to identify problems, but also to develop solutions that can create a tangible impact on operations,” said Agung.

This spirit can be seen in the diverse ideas submitted by participants. Rivaldo Mogot, for example, submitted a proposal titled “Optimalization the Cathode Preparation Procedure to Increase Premium Product Cobalt Electrowinning.” Drawing on his experience in the work area, he sees HCI as an opportunity to further optimise an existing process.

“Through HCI, I have the opportunity to review the processes we currently carry out and identify opportunities to make them more effective. I hope the idea can go beyond being a proposal and deliver tangible benefits,” said Rivaldo.

Meanwhile, Milah Hudiyah brings an environmental perspective through her proposal, “Eco Life Compost,” which focuses on turning organic waste into compost as part of a more environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyle.

“Through Eco Life Compost, I want to show that organic waste can still be turned into something useful. I hope this idea can encourage more environmentally conscious habits,” said Milah.

Together, these ideas show that improvement can emerge from different needs, from enhancing operational processes to promoting more sustainable practices.

Ultimately, HCI is not simply about winning a competition. It is about building the habit of asking: Is there a better way to do this?

Observation leads to ideas. Ideas create opportunities for meaningful change.

That is #CaranyaHarita to continually improving, embracing change, and turning ideas into value as Harita Nickel moves towards Operational Excellence.

From Ideas to Impact: #CaranyaHarita Keeps Improving

The term decarbonization has become increasingly common in various forums and public discussions. But what exactly is decarbonization, and why is it so important? This article explores what decarbonization means, why it is highly relevant for Indonesia, and how Harita Nickel is translating this commitment into concrete actions.

What Is Decarbonization?

Simply put, decarbonization is the process of reducing or eliminating carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by various human activities, including industry, energy, transportation, and agriculture. The goal is to slow the pace of global climate change.

According to the Indonesia Research Institute for Decarbonization (IRID), decarbonization is a process aimed at reducing or even eliminating all carbon emissions generated by human activities. Various approaches can support decarbonization, including transitioning from fossil fuels to low-carbon, renewable, and sustainable energy sources.

The term decarbonization has become increasingly prominent since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015, an international agreement that aims to limit the increase in global temperatures to well below 2°C. According to reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), this target can only be achieved if all sectors implement rapid, deep, and sustained emissions reductions.

At the national level, Indonesia has committed to achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060, with an unconditional emissions reduction target of 31.89% by 2030 through its Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (ENDC).

What Are the Goals of Decarbonization?

Decarbonization is not simply about reducing pollution. It also plays a role in addressing long-term and interconnected impacts, including:

1. Achieving Climate Neutrality

The primary goal of decarbonization is to create a balance between GHG emissions released into the atmosphere and the Earth's capacity to absorb them. This condition is known as net zero emissions. Once this point is achieved, the rate of global warming can be stabilized.

2. A Structured Energy Transition

Decarbonization requires a shift from fossil fuel-based energy, including coal, oil, and gas, toward renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal energy. This process cannot happen instantly and must be carefully planned to ensure energy supply reliability and economic continuity are maintained.

3. Energy and Material Efficiency

Before replacing energy sources, one of the most effective steps is often to use energy more efficiently. Energy efficiency reduces overall energy demand, which directly lowers emissions without requiring significant upfront investment.

4. Driving Technological Innovation and Supply Chains

Decarbonization serves as a catalyst for the development of new technologies and their associated supply chains, including electric vehicles, energy storage systems such as batteries, and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Investment in these areas not only helps reduce emissions but also creates opportunities for new industries and jobs.

5. Long-Term Economic Resilience

Countries and companies that adapt earlier to a low-carbon economy will have a stronger competitive position. Global markets, institutional investors, and industrial supply chains are increasingly requiring sustainability standards as a prerequisite for market access rather than merely treating them as an added value.

Harita Nickel’s Decarbonization Commitment

Amid the complexity of decarbonization challenges facing Indonesia’s nickel industry, Harita Nickel positions decarbonization as part of its long-term business strategy, rather than merely as a regulatory compliance measure.

Three-Phase Roadmap Toward Net Zero 2060

Harita Nickel has developed a structured decarbonization roadmap consisting of three phases:

Short Term (2027) — Increasing the share of renewable energy in line with the Indonesian Government’s targets, as well as implementing and managing New and Renewable Energy (EBT). This includes the construction of rooftop Solar Power Plants (PLTS), which began in the third quarter of 2025, and the ongoing implementation of an ISO 50001-based Energy Management System for PT TBP and PT GPS.

Medium Term (2032) — Reducing GHG emissions by 30% through an increased EBT mix, energy efficiency initiatives, and the utilization of other non-fossil energy sources.

Long Term (2060) — Achieving Net Zero Emissions through a major transition toward New and Renewable Energy (EBT) while balancing the use of fossil fuels.

Ongoing Initiatives

As part of its commitment to implementing the Decarbonization Roadmap, Harita Nickel continues to develop various Sustainable Energy Initiatives (SEIs) to support emissions reduction while improving energy efficiency across its operational areas.

SEIs encompass various new and renewable energy sources, ranging from energy recovered from production processes to alternative fuels used by Harita Nickel throughout each phase of the decarbonization roadmap. These initiatives represent the Company’s concrete efforts to implement more sustainable and responsible business practices through the use of technology, energy optimization, and more environmentally friendly operational solutions.

The following are several sustainable energy initiatives implemented by Harita Nickel:

Turning Waste Heat from the Acid Plant into Energy

One of Harita Nickel’s energy efficiency initiatives involves utilizing waste heat generated from the sulfuric acid production process at its acid plant. Heat that was previously released as waste is now recovered and converted into energy to support operations.

The application of this technology helps improve energy efficiency across Harita Nickel’s operational facilities, with total energy utilization reaching 11,637,506 GJ and avoiding 1,289,291 tCO2e of GHG emissions. This initiative is also part of the Company’s strategy to optimize energy consumption.

Implementing Gasification Technology

In addition to adopting electric vehicles, Harita Nickel has implemented a conveyor belt system to support operational material distribution. The system helps accelerate material transportation while reducing fuel consumption compared with the use of dump trucks. It also helps reduce dust emissions in the work area.

The implementation of coal conveyor belts is one of the Company’s solutions for creating a more efficient, safer, and more sustainable material distribution process.

Energy Management System (EnMS) for Energy Optimization

The various SEIs above do not operate independently. Harita Nickel implements an ISO 50001-based Energy Management System (EnMS) as a management system to ensure that each energy initiative—from acid plant waste heat recovery to biodiesel—is utilized efficiently, measured consistently, and aligned with emissions reduction targets.

The implementation of EnMS is carried out in stages, beginning with employee training and awareness enhancement, gap assessments, the establishment of energy baselines and targets, and internal audits. Through this system, the Company can identify energy efficiency opportunities while ensuring that all SEIs remain aligned with the decarbonization roadmap toward Net Zero 2060.

Supporting the Global Energy Transition

Decarbonization is no longer merely a global trend but an increasingly urgent necessity for all industrial sectors, including mining and nickel downstream processing in Indonesia.

As the country with the world's largest nickel reserves, Indonesia plays a strategic role in supporting the global energy transition. The nickel produced is not only expected to meet the needs of the electric vehicle industry but must also comply with increasingly stringent sustainability standards.

Through its various decarbonization initiatives, Harita Nickel seeks to support the development of an Indonesian nickel industry that is more competitive, efficient, and sustainable in the future.

What Is Decarbonization? Definition, Goals, and Harita Nickel’s Commitment Toward Net Zero Emissions

At Harita Nickel, heavy equipment serves as the backbone of the company’s operations across various functions and locations. With their high power and mobility, these units operate every day in areas shared with workers and other vehicles. The combination of heavy equipment, high mobility, and heavy traffic makes the correct management and operation of heavy equipment an important part of the Critical Safety Compliance Protocol (CSCP) framework.

Safety challenges in heavy equipment operations vary, including collisions and similar incidents that can occur for several reasons, including limited operator visibility due to blind spots, carelessness, and unauthorized operation of equipment. As part of efforts to prevent accidents in the workplace, every Insan Harita operating heavy equipment is required to comply with the six safety aspects that form the foundation of CSCP, from before work begins until after the work is completed.

Before starting work with heavy equipment, the operator’s competency must be verified. Every Harita employee who is operating heavy equipment must have a Company Driver’s License (SIMPER), an Operating License (SIO), have passed the required examination, and be declared fit through a medical examination. Document readiness must also be ensured. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for operation, inspection, and maintenance SOPs, Certificate of Operational Feasibility (SILO), Equipment Permit (SIA), and the list of vehicles and operators must be available and valid.

During operations, heavy equipment operators must always manage hazards and risks. Every unit in use must meet the required standards and undergo Daily Inspection and Check (P2H). In addition, parking areas, maximum speed limits, and safe distances must always be observed. Disciplinary sanctions are also imposed for violations of safety procedures and standard operating procedures.

The condition of equipment is also an important consideration during operations. Every vehicle and piece of heavy equipment in operation must be equipped with safety equipment such as seat belts, strobe lights, fire extinguishers (APAR), and other required equipment. All units must undergo inspection, checks, and periodic maintenance in accordance with government regulations.

Critical Aspects during operations must also be considered, as they may affect safety in areas surrounding the operations. The impact of company operations on communities must be included in hazard identification; access for company vehicles to public roads must be restricted, and hazardous areas must be clearly marked. For employees, traffic signs and lights are installed along routes used by heavy equipment, while designated pedestrian paths are established to avoid direct contact between workers and heavy equipment.

After the work has been completed, all safety aspects must undergo a management review. This review includes evaluating permits, operator competency, heavy equipment maintenance, analysis of violations and disciplinary actions, and investigation of any incidents that may have occurred.

In operational areas, heavy equipment and people move within the same spaces every day. By complying with the six CSCP safety aspects, Insan Harita can actively contribute to ensuring that equipment operations remain controlled, helping ensure that we and those around us can work safely.

Understand the risks. Control the hazards. Stop the work if it is unsafe.

CSCP Series #2: How Harita Manages and Operates Heavy Equipment

As a company that is engaged in nickel mining and ore processing, Harita Nickel’s operational areas include several high-risk points that require a high level of attention from every worker. One of these is the plant area, where processing activities run continuously. This makes safety here an important part of the Critical Safety Compliance Protocol (CSCP) framework.

Safety challenges in the plant area vary, ranging from electric shock, being caught in machinery, falls from height, and fires to exposure to chemicals and toxic gases. Through the implementation of CSCP, every Insan Harita working in this area is required to comply with six safety aspects that form the foundation of CSCP, from before work begins until after the work is completed.

The first thing to consider before starting work in the plant area is worker competency. Plant operations may only be carried out by workers who are properly trained and hold the required certifications. In addition, ensuring the required documents are ready is also important. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work permits, and supporting documents such as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and evacuation route maps must be available and valid.

While carrying out work in the plant area, Harita employees must always pay attention to hazard and risk management. This includes conducting a comprehensive safety review through procedures such as Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Determining Control (HIRADC). Any changes to equipment, processes, or procedures must go through a documented Management of Change (MOC) process. All energy sources must be controlled through the Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedure.

Equipment used for work in the plant must also be inspected and have the appropriate permits in accordance with government regulations. Furnaces and power generation installations must hold a Certificate of Operational Feasibility, pressure vessels must be equipped with pressure relief valves, building structures must have a Certificate of Functional Feasibility, and other equipment must also have the appropriate certifications and be operated by trained personnel.

There are also Critical Aspects that need to be considered. These include factors beyond equipment or activities that may affect safety in areas surrounding operations. From a community perspective, the impact of plant operations is also incorporated into the hazard identification process. High-risk areas and facilities need to be clearly marked, and reporting mechanisms need to be communicated to the community. From a security perspective, access to operational areas must be controlled. Information regarding hazards in areas that intersect with third-party activities must also be properly communicated.

After the work has been completed, the implementation of all safety aspects is reviewed through a management review concerning the safety of plant operations. This review covers personnel competency, the validity of equipment permits, facility inspection and maintenance results, emergency response, and incident investigation findings. The implementation of these standards is also audited at least once a year.

“Working conditions in a plant require consistent vigilance from everyone. Even the smallest step we overlook can have a significant impact. Therefore, we implement multiple layers of oversight for every task to help ensure that each job is carried out correctly and safely. We evaluate every potential issue associated with each task and establish appropriate preventive and safety measures,” explained Risky Dharmawan, Deputy Head of Acid Plant at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL).

In the plant area, processes that run without stopping demand vigilance that must not stop either. The six safety aspects within CSCP exist to ensure that every stage of work in this area proceeds with clear controls, so that production can continue without compromising anyone's safety within it.

Understand the risks. Control the hazards. Stop the work if it is unsafe.

CSCP Series #1: How Harita Practices Safety in Plant Operations

It was still dark when Rita left home. She had hidden her clothes in a plastic bag because she did not own a proper bag yet. That morning, she had one goal: to reach the nearest big town in time to sit for her school examination.

Margarita Luwudara, known as Rita, was the sixth of eight children born into a farming family in Kawasi, at a time when access to education and transportation was far from easy. Travelling to the nearest town could take an entire day, combining journeys by land and sea.

Her journey was made even harder by the fact that she left home without her father’s blessing. When Rita asked for permission to sit her primary school examination in 2008, her father’s response broke her heart.

“Why go through all this trouble for school? In the end, you’ll just be like your older siblings.”

Her father was not trying to hold her back. He was worried that the sacrifices he had made to send her older siblings to school would lead to the same outcome. He was afraid that Rita, too, might not find the future they had hoped for.

Despite her tears, Rita refused to give up on her childhood dream of becoming a pastor. She had been inspired by a religious leader in her village whom she admired for her intelligence and charisma.

Then, support came from an unexpected source: one of her teachers, who promised to provide Rita with meals throughout the examination. The night before she left, Rita hid her clothes beneath an eggplant tree. Before dawn, she quietly set off into the darkness.

Her courage paid off when her older sibling caught up with her, bringing food and news that their father had relented and given his permission. He later accompanied Rita until she completed her examination.

Rita’s achievements gradually changed her father’s view. When asked what she wanted to become, she answered without hesitation: “I want to be a pastor.”

Her determination touched her father, especially because no woman from Kawasi had ever become a pastor before. From then on, his support for her education grew stronger.

Following her senior high school graduation, her dream of studying in Ambon ran into financial obstacles, since her older sibling was also still in school. A way forward came through a Harita Nickel scholarship. This support eased the family's burden, allowing her sibling to focus on covering Rita's living costs.

After completing her theology degree at the Maluku Indonesian Christian University (UKIM) in 2016, fate then led her to work at a company. Then, in October 2018, Rita joined Harita Nickel. Although she never stood at a church pulpit, her theological training became a crucial foundation for the work she does today.

“Because in both roles, I am ultimately dealing with people,” she said.

Today, Rita deals directly with the community's wide-ranging needs and concerns. Her education taught her empathy: to see problems clearly, search for solutions, and anchor her approach in humanity.

As the first local woman to join the CSR team, Rita has faced high expectations from the community. When support reaches those who need it, appreciation follows. But when expectations cannot be met, social dynamics can quickly change. Rita chooses to face those moments with reason and perspective.

“I’m not an ice cream vendor with just one flavour. I can’t please everyone,” she said firmly.

For Rita, being a bridge between the company and the community is about much more than distributing aid. It means listening to people’s hopes, aspirations, communicating the limitations transparently, and building relationships based on mutual understanding and trust.

After nearly eight years of dedication, Rita is now a Community Relations Superintendent.

Her journey is a testament to the people and opportunities that helped shape her: a teacher who opened the first door, a family that eventually supported her ambitions, and a company that gave local talent the opportunity to grow and lead.

Years ago, Rita quietly slipped out of her home in the darkness, determined to reach a school examination with her clothes hidden beneath an eggplant tree. Today, she stands in the community that raised her, not as the girl trying to find her way out, but as a professional helping build understanding between the company and the people around it.

Her journey has come full circle. And through it all, one principle remains at the heart of who she is: treating people with humanity.

Margarita Luwudara: From Braving the Darkness for School to Nurturing Harmony Around the Mine

Managing tailings from the High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) process requires more than technology alone. It depends on how facilities are designed, operated, monitored, and continuously improved. An effective approach requires a strong understanding of environmental characteristics, robust governance frameworks, and the right operational capabilities to ensure safe and responsible management.

This approach was explored during the webinar “Indonesia’s Nickel Tailings: Can Governance Catch Up Before the Waste Does?” hosted by the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia in collaboration with the Energy Shift Institute on 15 July 2026. During the forum, Harita Nickel ESG Transformation Manager Zahedi Zakaria shared the company’s experience in managing HPAL tailings through an integrated approach that combines technology, governance, and continuous capability building.

Harita Nickel's Sustainability Manager outlined the company's byproduct management to panelists from WRI and the Energy Shift Institute

As the HPAL-based nickel industry continues to expand, tailings management has become an increasingly important aspect of responsible mining operations. Generated as a residual material from mineral processing, tailings require a management system designed to minimize risks, support operational reliability, and provide long-term environmental protection.

One of the approaches implemented by Harita Nickel is the Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF). Through this method, the tailings' water content is reduced through filtration, allowing the material to be stored in a more stable solid form. This approach helps reduce potential environmental risks, enables the reuse of filtered water in industrial processes, and improves the overall stability of the storage facility compared with conventional wet tailings storage approaches.

According to Zahedi, responsible tailings management is not solely determined by the technology being used, but also by how the technology is designed, operated, and adapted to the characteristics of the operating environment.

"Responsible tailings management is not only determined by the technology being used, but also by how the technology is designed and operated according to environmental characteristics and local conditions. Therefore, strong governance and operational capabilities must advance together," Zahedi said.

He added that each operational area has different geological, hydrological, and environmental characteristics. Therefore, tailings management approaches must be tailored to local conditions to ensure safe and effective implementation.

This perspective aligns with a WRI Indonesia study that compares national regulatory frameworks with several international standards, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards, Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), and Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI). The study highlights the importance of strengthening governance frameworks while continuing to consider local environmental and operational contexts.

During the webinar, WRI Indonesia also recognized the implementation of the Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF) at Harita Nickel’s operational area on Obi Island.

"Only a few companies in Indonesia have facilities like Harita Nickel’s Dry Stack Tailings Facility. I highly appreciate Harita’s efforts. Based on its performance, this represents one of the notable examples of DSTF implementation in Indonesia," said David Purba, Decarbonisation Analyst at WRI Indonesia.

For Harita Nickel, the recognition serves as motivation to continuously strengthen its tailings management practices through ongoing evaluation, capability development, and collaboration with various stakeholders. The company believes that responsible tailings management is not only about applying the right technology, but also about ensuring that every process is carried out safely, responsibly, and in line with sustainable mining principles.

HPAL Tailings Management: Beyond Technology, Toward Responsible Mining

When rain falls across the mining area, runoff does not simply flow directly into nearby rivers or water bodies. A dedicated water management system is in place to collect runoff, allow sediments to settle, treat the water, and verify its quality before it is released back into the environment.

This system is an integral part of water management across Harita Nickel’s operational areas. Currently, there are 52 sediment ponds, comprising 35 ponds within the Mining Business Permit (IUP) area of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) and 17 ponds within the IUP area of PT Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS).

One of the largest is Tuguraci (TG) 2, covering approximately 43 hectares with a capacity of up to 1.2 million cubic meters. Runoff from upstream areas is collected here, giving sediment sufficient time to settle naturally before the water undergoes further treatment at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).

Harita Nickel Hydrology Strategic Compliance Engineer Aryadhani Arihta Sembiring Milala explained that the sedimentation process relies on gravity.

“Runoff is channelled through a series of ponds, allowing sediment particles sufficient settling time. Once the water has undergone sedimentation and treatment and meets the applicable water quality standards, it can then be discharged into the receiving water body,” Arya said.

Some of the treated water is also reused to support operational needs as part of efforts to improve water-use efficiency.

Water quality monitoring continues beyond the sediment ponds. Monitoring is carried out daily through automated systems and manual measurements, covering parameters such as pH, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), water clarity, and flow rate.

Harita Nickel also operates SPARING (Sistem Pemantauan Air Limbah Secara Terus-Menerus dan Dalam Jaringan), Indonesia’s continuous online wastewater monitoring system, which is connected to the Ministry of Environment. Through the system, TSS, flow rate, and pH data are automatically transmitted to the ministry’s server every two minutes.

In the field, the team collects water samples every two hours to verify monitoring results. All testing is conducted by an environmental laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025.

If monitoring results indicate that any parameter could exceed the applicable water quality standards, the discharge gate is temporarily closed. The water remains within the system until the treatment process is optimized and its quality meets the required standards.

Harita Nickel Geotechnical & Hydrology Superintendent Reza Febri said water management also plays an important role in controlling erosion and preventing sediment from reaching nearby rivers and water bodies.

“The goal is not only to meet water quality standards, but also to prevent sediment from being carried into rivers or nearby water bodies. That is why water management has been incorporated into every stage of our mining operations from the outset,” Reza said.

Ultimately, mine water management is about more than simply moving water from one place to another. It is an integrated system of infrastructure, technology, monitoring, and teamwork designed to ensure that water is properly managed before it is released back into the environment.[]

How Harita Nickel Manages Mine Water to Protect the Environment

Today, nickel is recognized as one of the world's most strategic minerals. It plays a vital role in the production of stainless steel, a wide range of industrial applications, and the batteries that power electric vehicles (EVs), making it an essential component of the global transition toward cleaner energy.

Yet, centuries ago, nickel was considered virtually worthless. European miners even regarded it as a "troublesome rock" because it resembled copper ore but yielded no copper when processed.

So, how did nickel evolve from a misunderstood metal into one of the world's most sought-after minerals? This article explores the fascinating history of nickel from its early reputation as a worthless ore to its critical role in stainless steel manufacturing and the modern electric vehicle battery industry.

Mistaken for Copper: The Origin of "Devil's Copper"

The history of nickel began long before the metal was successfully isolated.

In the 17th century, miners in Saxony, Germany, discovered a reddish-colored mineral that closely resembled copper ore. Believing they had found a valuable copper deposit, they attempted to extract copper from it but without success.

Frustrated by their repeated failures, the miners blamed an evil spirit known in Saxon folklore as Nickel, a mischievous goblin believed to deceive miners. They nicknamed the mysterious ore Kupfernickel, which literally translates to "Devil's Copper." This unusual name eventually became the origin of the word nickel, the name by which the metal is known today.

A Century Later, Nickel's True Identity Was Revealed

The true identity of Kupfernickel remained a mystery for nearly a century.

In 1751, Swedish chemist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt studied a mineral sample from a mine in Hälsingland, Sweden. After heating the ore with charcoal, he discovered that it contained neither copper nor any previously known metal. Instead, it yielded an entirely new metallic element with unique properties.

Cronstedt became the first scientist to successfully isolate nickel as a distinct chemical element. Inspired by the name Kupfernickel, he shortened it simply to nickel.

However, the discovery was not yet complete. Nickel's unique chemical properties were fully confirmed only in 1775, when Swedish chemist Torbern Bergman succeeded in producing pure nickel, firmly establishing it as a distinct chemical element.

From that point onward, nickel was no longer regarded as the mysterious "Devil's Copper," but as a newly discovered metal with remarkable potential—although its most transformative applications were still yet to come.

From a Curious Mineral to a Material for Coinage

Even after its identity had been established, nickel did not immediately become a widely used metal. It took more than a century before it found practical applications on a large scale.

One of the major turning points came in the 1860s, when the United States began minting coins made from nickel. According to Smithsonian Magazine, nickel was selected because of its abundant availability at a time when other metals traditionally used for coin production were becoming increasingly scarce.

From that point on, nickel was no longer viewed as an unusual mineral that was difficult to process. Instead, it gained recognition as a practical and reliable metal, valued for its excellent corrosion resistance, durability, and ability to form strong alloys with other metals.

A Turning Point: The Birth of Stainless Steel

Nickel's next breakthrough came in the early 20th century.

In 1912, British metallurgist Harry Brearley developed stainless steel, a revolutionary alloy in which nickel became one of the key alloying elements. Combined with iron and chromium, nickel helped create a material that was exceptionally strong, heat-resistant, and highly resistant to corrosion qualities that made it far superior to conventional steel.

This innovation marked a significant turning point for the nickel industry. Global demand for nickel increased rapidly, driven by the growing use of stainless steel across a wide range of sectors.

Today, the majority of the world's nickel production is still used in the manufacture of stainless steel, which is found in countless applications ranging from kitchenware and household appliances to construction materials and heavy industrial equipment.

Nickel's Discovery in Indonesia

While Europe was uncovering the commercial value of nickel, Indonesia's vast nickel deposits remained largely unexplored.

Historical records indicate that Indonesia's first nickel ore deposit was discovered by chance in 1901 by Dutch missionary Albertus Christiaan Kruyt in the Verbeek Mountains, located along the border of present-day Central Sulawesi and South Sulawesi.

This discovery was followed in 1909 by mining engineer Eduard Cornelius Abendanon, who identified another significant nickel deposit in Pomalaa, Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi. Together, these discoveries marked the beginning of more systematic nickel exploration across the Indonesian archipelago.

In the decades that followed, several Dutch companies including Oost Borneo Maatschappij and Bone Tole Maatschappij initiated exploration activities in Sulawesi, laying the foundation for Indonesia's early nickel industry.

However, the industry's early development was not without challenges. During the Japanese occupation, efforts were made to establish a nickel processing plant in Pomalaa, but the project was abandoned after the facilities were destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II.

Following Indonesia's independence, the government gradually assumed control of the country's nickel mining sector. More extensive exploration and development efforts began in the late 1960s, setting the stage for Indonesia's emergence as one of the world's leading nickel-producing nations.

The History of Nickel: From an Overlooked Metal to One of the World's Most Valuable Commodities

Obi Island is one of the largest islands in South Halmahera, North Maluku, Indonesia. In recent years, the island has gained national and international recognition as one of Indonesia's key nickel-producing regions. However, Obi Island's appeal extends far beyond its abundant mineral resources. Its pristine natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant coastal communities make it a fascinating destination with far more to offer than its mining industry alone.

For many people, Obi Island is primarily associated with nickel mining and industrial development. Yet, long before becoming an important hub for Indonesia's downstream nickel industry, the island was home to communities with deep-rooted traditions and strong local wisdom. From lush tropical forests and biodiverse marine ecosystems to coastal villages and rolling hills, Obi Island offers remarkable natural and cultural richness waiting to be explored.

Where Is Obi Island?

Obi Island is located in the southern part of South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. It is the largest island within the Obi Islands archipelago, a group of islands situated in the southern region of North Maluku. Geographically, the island lies between the Molucca Sea and the Seram Sea, giving it a strategic location along eastern Indonesia's maritime routes.

Administratively, Obi Island covers approximately 2,542 square kilometers and has a population of 52,588. The island is divided into five districts and 34 villages: Obi, South Obi, West Obi, East Obi, and North Obi. Some of the best-known villages include Kawasi, Soligi, Buton, Anggai, Sambiki, Laiwui, Jikotamo, Air Mangga, and Ake Gula.

Each village has its own unique characteristics, shaped by its local economy, cultural traditions, and natural environment. Some communities are located along the coast, where fishing remains the primary livelihood, while others have developed around plantations, trade, and industrial activities.

Along the coast, extensive mangrove ecosystems play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance while serving as important breeding grounds for numerous marine species.

The island also offers growing opportunities for marine tourism, including fishing, snorkeling, and enjoying its scenic coastal landscapes, making Obi Island an increasingly attractive destination for nature enthusiasts.

Abundant Natural Resources

Obi Island is endowed with abundant natural resources. In addition to its rich fisheries and plantation commodities, the island possesses substantial mineral reserves that have made it one of Indonesia's strategically important regions for industrial development.

These natural resources have created significant economic opportunities, both through traditional primary sectors and through the development of downstream industries that add value to locally produced commodities.

At the same time, other sectors—including fisheries, agriculture, and community-based microenterprises continue to play an essential role in supporting the livelihoods and economic resilience of the people of Obi Island.

Obi Island as a Major Nickel-Producing Region

One of the primary reasons Obi Island has gained widespread recognition is its substantial nickel reserves, with total nickel ore resources and reserves estimated at 310.8 million wet metric tons (WMT). Together with several other mining regions in Sulawesi and North Maluku, Obi Island has become one of the key contributors to Indonesia's nickel industry.

The island's abundant nickel deposits are the result of geological processes that have taken place over millions of years. Combined with a tropical climate and high rainfall, these natural conditions have formed extensive laterite nickel deposits, making Obi Island one of Indonesia's most important mineral-rich regions.

The island's significant nickel resources have also supported the development of an integrated nickel processing industry. On Obi Island, Harita Nickel operates an integrated mining and processing complex as part of Indonesia's downstream mineral development strategy, which aims to increase the value of the country's mineral resources through domestic processing.

Through its processing facilities on Obi Island, nickel ore is not only mined but also refined into a range of value-added products, including ferronickel (FeNi) for the stainless steel industry, as well as Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), nickel sulfate, and cobalt sulfate essential raw materials for the electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain.

Beyond strengthening Indonesia's downstream mineral industry, these operations contribute to regional economic growth by creating employment opportunities, supporting infrastructure development, enhancing the capabilities of the local workforce, and fostering collaboration with communities surrounding the company's operational areas.

Supported by its abundant natural resources and sustainable industrial development, Obi Island is now recognized not only as one of Indonesia's leading nickel-producing regions but also as an important contributor to the global energy transition through the supply of critical raw materials for electric vehicle batteries.

Getting to Know Obi Island: A North Maluku Island Rich in Natural Beauty, Culture, and Nickel Resources

Innovation in mining is driven not only by hands-on experience but also by the convergence of practice and scientific knowledge. That spirit was at the heart of a knowledge-sharing session, The Role of IPB Alumni in Driving Innovation in Post-Mining Management, featuring Dr Irdika Mansur, Head of the Mine Reclamation Study Centre at IPB University, at the Obi Industrial Estate (KIO).

Held in late July 2026, the forum brought together 20 IPB University alumni from across Harita Nickel's business units. More than a reunion, it served as a platform where academics and industry practitioners exchanged ideas on post-mining management, the application of research, and approaches to creating lasting environmental and social value.

Dr Irdika emphasised that universities and industry play complementary roles in addressing today's mining challenges. Academic research, he said, has the potential to generate practical solutions across a broad spectrum of issues, from environmental management and mine reclamation to community development.

"The Mine Reclamation Study Centre fulfils three key roles: conducting research to drive innovation, supporting the government in developing regulatory frameworks, and assisting mining companies in implementing those regulations," he said.

He added that mine reclamation is no longer simply about restoring land to a green landscape. Instead, post-mining areas should be developed as productive landscapes capable of creating long-term value through agriculture, fisheries, livestock farming, and locally based commodities.

That philosophy is reflected in the work of Lukmanul Hakim, Community Development Supervisor at Harita Nickel. A graduate of IPB University's Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Lukman applies his academic background to design community development programmes tailored to the needs of villages surrounding the company's operations.

One example is the Farmers and Fishers Business Centre (SUTAN) initiative, which supports fishing communities in Kawasi and Soligi villages by improving productivity, expanding market access, and increasing the value of their catch through modern fish-processing facilities.

"The knowledge I gained at IPB has been instrumental in helping me understand the potential of coastal resources and the needs of local communities. It provides the foundation for designing community development programmes that reflect local conditions, strengthening community capacity while fostering long-term economic independence," Lukman said.

According to Lukman, successful community development depends on a thorough understanding of local potential and community needs. A science-informed approach, he added, is essential to ensure that every initiative delivers meaningful and lasting impact.

For Harita Nickel, Lukman's experience illustrates that partnerships with universities extend well beyond knowledge exchange. They foster a culture of continuous learning while generating practical solutions that create value for both the business and the communities it serves.

For Andi Muhammad Fajri Nur Ramzy Makarratte, Environment Marine Foreman at Harita Nickel, the discussion offered a broader perspective on mine reclamation.

"The discussion broadened my understanding of reclamation. It is not only about restoring land, but also about creating productive landscapes that deliver lasting benefits for communities," Ramzy said.

The discussion at the Obi site demonstrated that meaningful ideas do not emerge solely from laboratories or boardrooms. They also take shape through shared experience, the exchange of knowledge, and a collective commitment to continuous learning.[]
