Industry and Research Synergy: Harita Nickel Presents Sustainability Strategy at ICoSE 2025

As part of Indonesia’s commitment to advancing nickel downstreaming and the electric vehicle battery industry, Harita Nickel has achieved another key milestone in ensuring a responsible and transparent mineral supply chain.
Through one of its business units operating on Obi Island, PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (PT ONC), Harita Nickel successfully completed the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) audit conducted by the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) for two commodities—nickel and cobalt. Previously, another Harita Nickel subsidiary, PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), completed the same audit and this year underwent its second annual assessment.
This achievement reaffirms Harita Nickel’s strong commitment to building a transparent, ethical, and globally compliant mineral supply chain through the implementation of standardized due diligence systems.
The RMAP assessment, dated May 29, 2025, confirmed that PT ONC passed a comprehensive evaluation covering responsible sourcing practices, risk management, independent auditing, and public disclosure. With this recognition, Harita Nickel is among the few nickel and cobalt producers in Indonesia that comply with international due diligence frameworks such as those established by the OECD, European Union, and the U.S. Dodd-Frank Act.
According to Klaus Oberbauer, Sustainability Manager of Harita Nickel, achieving RMAP compliance represents international recognition of the company’s efforts to ensure its entire mineral supply chain is managed ethically, transparently, and responsibly.
“Implementing the principles of responsible mining and responsible sourcing is a key part of Harita Nickel’s ESG strategy in supporting a sustainable global battery industry while strengthening Indonesia’s role in the national nickel downstream supply chain,” he said.
RMAP, developed by the RMI, serves as a global standard to ensure mineral supply chains are transparent and free from conflict-related risks and human rights violations. Through its rigorous and transparent assessment process, RMAP has become an international benchmark for mineral refineries seeking to enhance credibility and traceability within their supply chains.
The successful completion of RMAP audits by both PT ONC and PT HPL demonstrates that Harita Nickel’s operational practices and governance systems align with globally recognized Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. The company’s standardized due diligence framework further reinforces its integrity in ensuring that all produced minerals are traceable and free from conflict sources.
“This achievement is not only a corporate milestone but also a reflection of Indonesia’s contribution to the global energy transition through responsible nickel downstreaming. We believe responsible practices are not merely obligations, but the foundation of trust between companies, customers, and the global community,” Klaus added.
Moving forward, Harita Nickel will continue to enhance its due diligence systems and supplier engagement through ongoing audits to remain aligned with customer expectations and evolving international standards.
Further information on Harita Nickel’s Responsible Sourcing practices and Sustainability Report is available on the company’s official website.

Harita Nickel Completed Second RMAP Audit, Reinforces Commitment to a Responsible Nickel Supply Chain

In today’s dynamic work environment, the ability to adapt and innovate is essential for organizations to remain relevant and competitive. At Harita Nickel, this spirit thrives through Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI)—an annual initiative that drives innovation and continuous improvement across all business units.
As part of the preparation for HCI 2025, Harita Nickel held a training program titled “Creating Continuous Improvement Mindset” in collaboration with SSCX International on November 6–7, 2025. The training equipped employees with an open and collaborative mindset to become internal facilitators who champion improvement initiatives within their respective units.
“We want every employee to have the spirit of always finding ways to be better than before. With a continuous improvement mindset, efficiency and innovation can grow naturally across all levels,” said Achmad Halim, Operational Excellence Specialist Harita Nickel.
So, how can organizations build a continuous improvement mindset in the workplace? Here are the five key principles that form its foundation.

1. Think holistically, not in silos

Often, we focus only on tasks within our own divisions without understanding how they relate to the broader process. In reality, every part of an organization is interrelated.
Through the Sigma Station Simulation, participants learned to view processes from end to end, understanding how small decisions in one area can affect the final outcome. By thinking holistically, everyone can contribute to improving overall efficiency.

2. Always seek better processes

Continuous improvement is not a one-time project—it’s a daily habit of asking, “Can this be done better?” Using the Lean Six Sigma approach, participants learned how to streamline processes, reduce waste, and enhance quality through the DMAIC method: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control.
“In any industry, improvement must start from customer needs so that innovation remains relevant,” said Aulia Djati, Consultant and Trainer at SSCX International.

3. Turn problems into opportunities

Instead of seeing obstacles as barriers, the training encouraged participants to treat them as sources of inspiration. Every problem signals room for improvement.
Participants learned to identify non-value-added activities and transform them into innovation opportunities. This fosters a new mindset: problems are not to be feared—they are gateways to progress.

4. Focus on the process, not the person

In a culture of continuous improvement, the focus is not on finding who’s at fault, but on fixing systems so that mistakes don’t recur. By shifting the focus from individuals to processes, teams can work more openly, learn from each other, and feel safe to experiment without fear of blame.

5. Dare to start without being perfect

Continuous improvement begins with small steps. There’s no need to wait for perfection before starting—what matters most is the willingness to keep improving.
“This training helped shape a systematic, improvement-oriented mindset. We feel fully supported because we’re given the opportunity to contribute more,” said Abdullah Abiyyu, a participant from PT Cipta Kemakmuran Mitra (CKM).

Through this training, Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to cultivating a work culture that is adaptive, collaborative, and continuously improving. In a world that’s constantly changing, true success belongs not to those who are perfect, but to those who never stop striving to become better.

5 Keys to Building a Continuous Improvement Culture at Harita Nickel

Amidst the push for national nickel downstreaming, Harita Nickel emphasized that the success of the industry is not only measured by production capacity, but also the environmental responsibility and safety that goes beyond compliance. This message was the company's main emphasis when participating in Minerba Convex 2025, which was held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on October 15-16, 2025.
Through a panel discussion themed “Applying Sustainability Best Practices in Nickel Downstream Development: The HSE Perspective of Harita Nickel,” Harita Nickel’s HSE director, Tonny Gultom, conveyed the importance of implementing Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) practices that go beyond compliance. The implementation of safety and environmental standards must extend beyond mere compliance with national regulations, enabling management to be more integrated and aligned with the demands of the global market.

“Beyond compliance is not just a matter of following the rules. We cannot just stop at the limit of national regulations, as more than 62% of the world's nickel market originates from Indonesia. Environmental management must be carried out as a whole, from the construction of drainage systems for water regulation, the use of slag as a building material, to biodiversity studies around the operational area,” said Tonny Gultom.
According to him, Indonesia’s strategic position as the world’s leading nickel supplier requires more advanced mining and processing practices so that Indonesia’s downstream products can be accepted by international markets that are increasingly selective about sustainability aspects.
In his presentation, Tonny explained that Harita Nickel has a sustainability framework based on three main pillars: climate change, good governance, and human rights. This framework forms the basis for the implementation of an integrated HSE system across all of the company’s operations, from mining to smelters and refineries.
“Talking about the sustainability framework, to achieve sustainability, there are several standards that must be met before moving forward. At Harita Nickel, this is realized through an integrated system between HSE and operations, combining SMKP for mining, SMK3 for smelters and refineries, as well as international standards such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and global initiatives such as GRI, RMI, and IRMA,” He explained.
Through the implementation of an integrated system, Harita Nickel ensures that health, occupational safety, and environmental management aspects are in line with the production operations. These practices, which exceed compliance requirements, are not only an obligation but also a manifestation of the company’s responsibility to support the transformation of Indonesia’s nickel industry towards sustainable and world-class downstreaming.

During his presentation at Minerba Convex 2025, Tonny Gultom emphasized that the sustainability of the nickel industry must be driven by the implementation of an integrated HSE framework aligned with both national regulations and global market expectations.

Tonny then concluded his session by inviting all stakeholders in the mining industry to strengthen collaboration towards the implementation of more consistent global standards.
“The hope is that the regulations in Indonesia will increasingly align with international standards so that their implementations can be more integrated in the field. This is both a challenge and an opportunity for us to continuously improve mining industry management quality and strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global supply chain,” he concluded.

Beyond Compliance, Harita Nickel's Sustainable Downstreaming Foundation at Minerba Convex 2025

Harita Nickel has successfully produced electrolytic cobalt since August 2024. This step reinforces the company's commitment to downstream nickel processing and confirms its important role in the global electric vehicle (EV) battery industry supply chain.
Electrolytic cobalt, along with nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate, are derived from the purification of limonite ore using High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology. These products serve as the main raw materials for producing EV battery precursors.
Electrolytic cobalt is a form of pure cobalt metal produced through an electrochemical process called electrowinning. This process uses an electric current to separate cobalt from an electrolyte solution. The output is a high-purity metal, reaching up to 99.98%, which is widely used in modern technologies such as rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, specialty steels such as superalloys for turbines and aircraft engines, magnets, also chemical catalysts in chemical industries.

Tampilan fisik kobalt elektrolitik yang sudah melalui proses pemotongan

Rico Windy Albert, Head of Technical Support Department at Harita Nickel, stated that the goal of nickel downstreaming is to increase the value of nickel and cobalt ores into high-value products, especially key raw materials for EV batteries. Rico is optimistic that this downstreaming effort will boost economic growth, create jobs, and establish Indonesia as a global producer of battery raw materials.
A landmark achievement in Indonesia’s nickel downstream industry was recorded by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), a Harita Nickel subsidiary that pioneered the country’s first HPAL facility on Obi Island. PT HPL has already succeeded in producing Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), which is further refined into high-value products such as crystalline nickel sulfate (NiSO₄·6H₂O), cobalt sulfate (CoSO₄·6H₂O), and the latest innovation is electrolytic cobalt.
This significant achievement in nickel downstreaming was accomplished by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), a Harita Nickel business unit that operates the first HPAL facility at the Pulau Obi site, and the first of its kind in Indonesia. To date, PT HPL has successfully produced Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), which is then further processed into nickel sulfate (NiSO₄), cobalt sulfate (CoSO₄), and most recently, electrolytic cobalt.
In addition to PT HPL, Harita Nickel also owns PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (ONC), its second HPAL facility with three production lines that have been operating at full capacity since August 2024.
“This is truly an extraordinary achievement for Harita Nickel, and we, as members of the Harita family, should be proud to be a key part of the downstreaming initiative championed by the Indonesian government,” he said.
Meanwhile, Roy Arman Arfandy, President Director of Harita Nickel, stated that the company is committed to sustainable practices to address global industry challenges. A key step the company has taken is to voluntarily undergo an audit by the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA).
“We understand that ESG is no longer just about compliance, but also about competitiveness,” he said.
Roy cited various initiatives—such as building sedimentation ponds, managing processing waste, and using waste cooking oil from employee canteens as an additional energy source—as evidence of the company’s dedication to environmental responsibility.
“Our ability to compete and grow depends on adapting our operations to ever-changing standards while maintaining efficiency and cost excellence,” he concluded.

Harita Nickel Strengthens Key Position in EV Battery Industry with Electrolytic Cobalt Production

In the midst of the bustling, magnificent nickel downstream industry in the Obi Industrial Zone, a historical legacy continues to be maintained with full commitment by Harita Nickel: Fort De Brill. This ancient fort is not just a monument; it's tangible proof of how history can be preserved amidst the wave of modernization.
According to the Atlas of Mutual Heritage, Fort De Brill—also known as Fort Den Brill—is a Dutch colonial relic built in 1674. Initially made of wood, the fort was fortified with stone in 1678. Its purpose was to protect the spice monopoly from other European traders, who at the time were under the rule of the Bacan Sultanate.
According to W. Ph Coolhas (1923), the fort's location on the west coast of Obi Island allowed the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to monitor every ship sailing towards the Banda Sea. From there, they could observe movements from the directions of Bacan, Sula, and the Banda Sea. At that time, spices like cloves and nutmeg were worth more than gold—commodities that were the primary reason European nations competed to control the Nusantara archipelago.

From Neglected Ruin to Protected Heritage

The condition of Benteng De Brill when it was rediscovered in 2007 was concerning. According to the Jakarta Architectural Documentation Center (PDA), only a few sides of the fort remained intact. The rest were just stone ruins.
Tonny Gultom, Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at Harita Nickel, echoed this sentiment. He revealed that when the company first started mining activities on Obi Island in 2010, they stumbled upon the Benteng De Brill. They then sought information about the fort's history from local residents.
"When it was first found, it was covered in thick, overgrown trees, and the local residents were afraid to go there. But we cleared the area and maintained it by adding a protective fence," Tonny said.
After the discovery, Fort De Brill was then registered as a Cultural Heritage site under the management of the Cultural Preservation Agency (BPK) Region XXI of North Maluku Province.
"Fort De Brill has been recorded in our database as a preserved cultural heritage site since 2010. In its implementation, we collaborate with Harita Nickel as the area's manager," explained Irwansyah, a Cultural Attendant at BPK XXI.

Preserving Heritage Amidst Future Projects

Today, Fort De Brill remains in its original location on the west coast of Obi Island. Its position is strategic, situated near the port that serves as the main entry point for Harita Nickel's employees and guests. The employees call it the South Coast (Pansel) Port, given its location on the south side of Kawasi beach, where Harita Nickel's site is located.
Instead of viewing the ancient fort as an obstacle, Harita Nickel saw it as an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to social and cultural responsibility. The company not only cleaned up the fort's area but also built a protective fence and installed information signs to educate both the public and its employees about the site's historical value.
Although only ruins remain, the fort is estimated to have dimensions of 6x6 square meters with a height of about 3 meters. Inside, a recess believed to have been a cannon emplacement is still visible. Benteng De Brill is one of over 40 forts scattered across North Maluku, but its preservation within an industrial zone makes it truly special.
"Preserving cultural heritage sites within this mining area is part of our commitment to conducting responsible and sustainable mining operations," Tonny asserted.
Harita Nickel’s actions show that economic development and the preservation of historical sites can go hand in hand. Amid Indonesia's great ambition to become a key player in the global nickel industry, the story of Benteng De Brill on Obi Island is a crucial reminder that future progress must stand on the foundations of the civilizations that have shaped the nation's identity.

Fort De Brill: A Cultural Heritage Preserved Amidst the Obi Industrial Zone

Harita Nickel has been awarded the Katadata Green Initiatives Award 2025 for its innovative use of used cooking oil as an alternative energy source in its operations. This innovation aligns with the company’s commitment to supporting the green transition and reducing carbon emissions.
The award was presented at the Katadata Sustainability Action for the Future Economy (SAFE) 2025 forum, held in Jakarta on September 10, 2025. SAFE is an annual strategic forum organized by Katadata Indonesia since 2020 to promote the transition toward a sustainable economy in Indonesia.
This year, Harita Nickel was recognized for its pioneering steps in accelerating the energy transition. The company utilizes used cooking oil from its employee canteens as a substitute for coal in its Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) facilities.
RKEF is a method for processing high-grade nickel ore into stainless steel raw material, which involves two stages: a rotary kiln and an electric furnace. The RKEF process is energy-intensive, typically relying on coal or other fossil fuels. By using used cooking oil as a substitute for coal, Harita Nickel has made an effort to reduce its carbon emissions.
This initiative not only reduces the company’s reliance on fossil fuels but also leverages a cleaner, alternative energy source. By integrating renewable energy into the mineral industry, Harita Nickel strengthens Indonesia’s role in the global decarbonization agenda, demonstrating that sustainability can go hand-in-hand with national industrial growth.
"This award encourages us to continue strengthening our sustainability agenda across every line of our operations," said Tonny Gultom, Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at Harita Nickel.

"The use of used cooking oil is a tangible proof that the mining industry can transform toward greener energy," Tonny added.
Beyond this, the company also implements circular economy principles, processing waste materials like plastic into alternative fuels and used bottles into biofilter media for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).

Traditional music blended with cheers as PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP), a business unit of Harita Nickel, kicked off its 4th annual carnival.
Each year, the carnival serves as the grand finale of the Independence Day celebrations. This time, carrying the theme “Eastern Indonesia Shines,” the stage became a powerful symbol of unity—reflecting the life of employees whose diversity is bound by a shared purpose.

A total of 18 contingents from various departments and contractor partners delivered their best performances. From the stomping rhythms of the Cakalele dance, the graceful flow of Soya-soya, to the adrenaline-pumping bambu gila attraction, employees stepped beyond their roles as workers to proudly embody artists showcasing their ancestral heritage.
Amid the festivity, Younsel Evand Roos, Harita Nickel’s Operations Director, expressed gratitude: “Alhamdulillah, we are still able to gather with such joy. This carnival, rooted in Indonesia’s cultural richness, clearly brings out a stronger sense of togetherness.”
For him, the event carried meaning beyond entertainment. “Each group is challenged to build a solid team, requiring patience, discipline, and commitment. These are the very values we need every day in the workplace,” Younsel emphasized.

Tim Manajemen menampilkan berbagai macam tarian tradisional dari Indonesia Timur.
The highlight of the day came with the announcement of winners. The Management Group—an alliance of ten departments ranging from Finance, IT, Geology & Mine Planning, to Business Development—was crowned first place.
Team leader Charles Deni Nelson Auparai reflected on the challenges they faced: “Our spirit was to unite differences. We came from many departments, but also from different regions, tribes, islands, and languages. The challenge was big, but here, we became one,” he said.
According to Charles, their success hinged on humility. “We were not only practicing dance—we were practicing Indonesia. We were living out Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). Hopefully, this spirit of mutual respect will continue to guide us in our daily work.”
The Occupational Health, Safety, and Training (OHST) Department took second place and also secured the overall title, followed by the Human Resource & General Affair (HRGA) Department in third.
The announcement of winners officially closed TBP’s 80th Independence Day celebration series. Yet, while the event concluded, the spirit of unity it fostered will continue to live on—embedded in the company’s daily work culture.
