Harita Nickel participated in the International Conference on Sustainable Energy (ICoSE) 2025: Toward Energy Transition and Net-Zero Emission, held on 6–7 November 2025. This participation reaffirmed the Company’s commitment to supporting the energy transition through responsible practices and strengthened collaboration with the academic community.

During the Industrial Updates session on the first day, Harita Nickel’s Director of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE), Tonny Gultom, delivered a presentation entitled “Energy Audits and Carbon Footprint Reduction Strategies in the Mining Industry.” Tonny emphasized that energy audits should not be viewed merely as an administrative requirement, but as a scientific instrument to measure, evaluate, and optimize energy efficiency within mining operations.

“Energy efficiency and emissions reduction are integral parts of Harita Nickel’s operational strategy. This approach ensures long-term business sustainability while aligning with the national energy transition agenda,” Tonny stated.

The session also served as a platform for interactive discussions with academics and students. The high level of engagement reflected strong interest among younger generations in sustainability issues, as well as the importance of access to industry insights in enriching academic perspectives.

On the second day, Harita Nickel’s Sustainability Manager, Klaus Oberbauer, presented research entitled “Integrating Biodiversity in Mining: From Conceptual to Operational.” Klaus outlined the implementation of the Landscape Nature Risk Assessment (LNRA) framework adopted by Harita Nickel to comprehensively manage biodiversity-related risks.

Klaus highlighted the importance of integrating ecological approaches with social participation. “We implement practical measures for habitat protection, post-mining land rehabilitation, and landscape management that align with the ecological characteristics of Obi Island while actively involving local communities,” Klaus explained.

The presentation received recognition from the conference organizers, with Klaus Oberbauer being awarded Best Speaker. The research presented is also scheduled for publication in a prestigious international proceedings series by Springer Nature.

Harita Nickel’s participation in ICoSE 2025 reflects the Company’s contribution to disseminating responsible mining practices and enriching science-based dialogue within the energy and environmental sectors.
