The aroma of grilled fish, roasted kenari nuts, and yellow fish broth fills the settlement areas of Kawasi and Soligi villages on Obi Island. In simple kitchens, local women turn seafood and Obi's signature staples into flavorful dishes. Each dish also carries a story about regional identity.
That atmosphere came alive at the Cooking Festival 2026, themed "Women Create, Cuisine Goes Global: Creations of Signature Obi Dishes and Snacks (Kue)." Six women's groups from Kawasi and 10 from Soligi competed with creativity to present regional specialties. The menu ranged from papeda (sago porridge), ikan kuah kuning (fish in yellow broth), and kasbi santan (cassava in coconut milk) to gohu ikan (a raw fish dish). Snacks (kue) made from sago and kenari nuts were also on the table.

More than a competition, the event gave women a space to develop their creativity. It also helped them see the potential in what is close to their daily lives. Fish, sago, cassava, spices, and kenari nuts are not only part of culinary tradition. They can also be developed into products with economic value.
Deputy Department Head of Technical Support Amirudin of Harita Nickel, who also served as a judge, said community development needs to go hand in hand with the company's growth. According to Amirudin, local culinary riches can be one gateway to encouraging community self-reliance.
"The company's growth must go hand in hand with the community. Local wisdom, such as Obi's culinary riches and spices, can be developed into potential that brings benefits and encourages community self-reliance," said Amirudin.
Bambang Bakir, Head of the Community Welfare Section of the Kawasi Village Government, shared a similar view. Bambang hopes activities like this will not stop at being a competition. Instead, they can grow into a space to introduce the potential and local wisdom of Kawasi and Soligi villages.
"Don't let this stop at being just a contest. We hope activities like this continue to grow so that Kawasi's local potential and wisdom become better known," said Bambang.
Participants also felt the benefits directly. Tina, one of the participants who won first place, said the event helped strengthen bonds among residents.
"Before, we were just at home. Now we have an activity and can get together. The women who were not close before now know each other," said Tina.
Through local food, Obi women have found a space to create and to open up business opportunities. Obi cuisine is now more than dishes on the dining table. It is a regional treasure ready to be introduced to a wider audience.

In Kawasi, the group Mina Kita won first place and Al Hijrah took second. Resep Rahasia and Sapa Ramadan shared third place. Pemuda Putri Kawasi and UKM Propala received Honorable Mention 1 and 2, respectively.
In Soligi, winners in the Traditional Dishes category were Majelis Taklim Nurul Hidayah (first place), Usaha Wanita Tani (second), and Asri (third). Kompak and Emak-emak received Honorable Mention 1 and 2, respectively.
In the Traditional Snacks or Cakes (Kue) category, Mawar A won first place, followed by Majelis Taklim Nurhidayah B in second and Ubur-ubur in third. Indah and Semangat Wanita Tani received Honorable Mention 1 and 2, respectively.

When Kitchen Becomes a Creative Space for Obi Women

Cheers and applause echoed across the stage at the 2026 Obi Children's Festival. One by one, students stepped forward to perform traditional dances, answer quiz questions, and showcase their talents. Before an audience of teachers, parents, and community members, around 200 students from Kawasi and Soligi villages found the confidence to perform in public and celebrate their abilities.
Held under the theme "Joyful Obi, Child-Friendly Obi," the festival was part of Indonesia's National Children's Day celebration on Obi Island. Students from primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools took part in a range of activities, from traditional dance performances to the Class of Champion academic challenge. More than a competition, the festival gave young people an opportunity to express themselves, discover their strengths, and learn through experience.
Suryo Aji, Community Development Superintendent at Harita Nickel, said the festival was designed to create an enjoyable learning environment while encouraging children to believe in themselves and develop the confidence to perform in front of others.
"We want children to have a place where they can learn, express themselves, and believe in themselves. This festival is only the starting point. Through Sanggar Anak, we hope to provide continuous opportunities for them to keep learning, creating, and growing," he said.

For educators, experiences like these offer valuable lessons that cannot always be gained in the classroom. Dameria Silaya, a teacher at SMP Negeri 39 South Halmahera, has seen that change firsthand.
"Children who are usually quiet or shy become much more confident when given the opportunity to perform. Experiences like this help build self-confidence, and that will stay with them as they face new challenges in the future," she said.
One of those students was Fahril Muhlis from SMA Negeri 39 South Halmahera. Although he admitted feeling nervous before taking the stage, he decided to challenge himself by joining the competition.
"I'm actually not a very confident person. But through this event, I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. I hope it also encourages my friends to be brave enough to show what they're capable of," he said.

The festival also marks the beginning of a longer journey. Harita Nickel plans to launch Sanggar Anak, a monthly enrichment programme that will provide regular opportunities for children to explore the arts, develop creativity, strengthen practical skills, and showcase their work. The programme is designed to ensure that the enthusiasm generated during the festival continues long after the event has ended.
Bambang Bakir, Head of Social Welfare Affairs at the Kawasi Village Government, welcomed the initiative, saying children benefit from having more opportunities to develop their talents while building character.
"We hope programmes like this will continue. The more opportunities children have to learn and gain the confidence to perform, the greater their chances of developing their full potential," he said.

For many students, the Obi Children's Festival was their first opportunity to perform before a large audience. Obi Children's Festival Gives Children a Space to Learn, Create, and Thrive

The future often begins with a small step: the courage to learn something new. On Obi Island, those steps are reflected in the determination of dozens of young people who have chosen to prepare themselves for a changing world. As industries become increasingly modern and technology-driven, the demand for skilled, adaptable, and competitive talent continues to grow.
In response to this growing demand, Harita Nickel has launched the fourth batch of its PELITA Vocational Program (Youth Skills and Competency Development), focusing on Overhead Crane Operator training. The program is designed to expand access to competency development opportunities while preparing Obi Island’s younger generation to take an active role in the future industrial ecosystem.
Over the course of four months, participants embarked on a comprehensive learning journey that combined classroom instruction, hands-on field practice, and competency assessments. The program provided an opportunity to strengthen technical skills, cultivate discipline, and build readiness for an increasingly dynamic and evolving workplace.
Their dedication ultimately led to a significant achievement. A total of 40 participants successfully earned an Operational License Certificate (SIO), verified by Indonesia’s Ministry of Manpower and the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP). During the PELITA Batch IV Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, June 26, 2026, the graduates officially received their Class II Overhead Crane Operator SIO, a professional license authorizing them to operate lifting cranes with capacities ranging from 25 to 100 tons in accordance with established competency and occupational safety standards.

Deputy Head of Technical Support at Harita Nickel, Agung Aribowo, emphasized that the company’s commitment extends beyond building an integrated industrial ecosystem. Equally important is its ongoing effort to enhance the quality of human capital, particularly among local communities on Obi Island.
“Opportunities to improve the quality of human resources on Obi Island must continue to be expanded, so that the island’s young men and women can keep developing their potential and contribute positively to the place we all call home,” said Agung.
The impact of the program is best reflected in the experiences of its participants. One of them is La Bae La Jafar, a young man from Manatahan Village who sees PELITA as the beginning of a new chapter toward a brighter future.
“Alhamdulillah, this is a journey I am truly grateful for. I used to work as a crew member, and now I feel proud to have developed my potential and advanced my career,” he said.
For Bae, the program offered more than just technical training. Beyond the operational skills he gained, he learned that discipline, responsibility, and a commitment to continuous improvement are essential foundations for navigating future challenges and opportunities. These values, he believes, are just as important as professional competencies in shaping individuals who are resilient, dedicated, and capable of making meaningful contributions in the workplace.
A similar perspective was shared by Dr. Daud Djubaedi, Head of the South Halmahera Manpower and Transmigration Office, who emphasized the importance of continuous self-development in preparing young people to navigate an ever-changing world. According to him, opportunities to build skills and competencies should be embraced as valuable investments for the future.
“More important than the certificate itself are discipline, attitude, and the consistent application of safety culture principles in the workplace,” said Daud.

Empowering Today’s Generation, Building Obi’s Future

Behind the rolling hills of Soligi Village on Obi Island, South Halmahera, rows of vegetables now flourish across neatly cultivated garden beds. Water spinach, chili peppers, long beans, and cucumbers thrive on land that was once farmed only on a small and limited scale.&nbsp;
On that afternoon, dozens of women could be seen working in the garden. Some were preparing the soil, while others examined their crops and discussed pest control and upcoming harvests. Just a few years ago, many of them were unfamiliar with basic horticultural cultivation practices, making the transformation all the more remarkable.&nbsp;

Today, those gardens have become a source of tangible benefits for the women of the Women Farmers Groups (KWT) in Soligi and Kawasi villages. The vegetables they cultivate are regularly supplied to the company and local markets, generating tens of millions of rupiah in revenue each month.
For Jahariya, head of the Soligi Women Farmers Group, the transformation has been significant. What began as a small community initiative has grown into a productive farming enterprise. Today, the group’s 19 members collectively manage four horticultural plots, cultivating a variety of crops that contribute to both household incomes and the local economy.
Today, the gardens have become a source of tangible benefits for members of the Women Farmers Groups (KWT) in Soligi and Kawasi villages. The vegetables they cultivate are regularly supplied to the company and local markets, generating tens of millions of rupiah in monthly revenue.
Jahariya, head of the Soligi Women Farmers Group, said the group’s 19 members now manage four horticultural farming plots.
“We grow vegetables, chili peppers, and long beans across four locations. Fresh produce is delivered to the company twice a week, generating around Rp30 million in revenue each month,” she said.
For Jahariya, the achievement represents more than an additional source of income. Through these farming activities, members of the group have gained greater confidence and are playing a more active role in supporting their families’ economic well-being.
Agriculture is not new to Obi Island. For generations, communities in Soligi and Kawasi villages have relied on nutmeg, clove, and coconut plantations as key sources of livelihood. However, farming practices have largely remained traditional, with knowledge passed down through generations and cultivation methods often limited in scope, including shifting farming practices and basic agricultural techniques.
Horticultural crops were also relatively unfamiliar to many residents. Where such crops were cultivated, farming was often carried out without structured planting schedules, seedling management, or adequate pest control practices.

Recognizing these challenges, Harita Nickel launched its Field School program to provide guidance and support to local communities, particularly the Women Farmers Groups (KWT) in Soligi and Kawasi villages.
The initiative extends beyond technical agricultural training. It adopts a value-based approach that begins with understanding the community’s needs, especially those of women seeking opportunities to help improve their families’ livelihoods. Through this participatory approach, the program aims to strengthen both farming skills and community resilience.
“All members of the farming groups here are women. Most men work for the company or earn a living as fishermen, so the women wanted to contribute to their household income through agriculture,” said Albertus Darukumara, Community Development Supervisor at Harita Nickel.
In the early stages, the mentoring process was not without challenges. One of the biggest obstacles was the expectation of quick results, while horticultural farming requires patience, consistency, and a gradual learning process.
To address this, the facilitators adopted a hands-on approach. Following introductory training sessions, group members were encouraged to learn directly in the field, gaining practical experience in preparing planting beds, raising seedlings, caring for crops, and identifying signs of pest infestations. Through this experiential learning process, participants gradually built the skills and confidence needed to manage their gardens independently.
The approach gradually began to bear fruit.
Today, members of the Women Farmers Groups (KWT) in Soligi and Kawasi are able to cultivate a wide range of horticultural crops, including water spinach, spinach, bitter melon, eggplant, long beans, and chili peppers, with steadily improving quality. They have also developed a better understanding of the importance of maintaining product quality and ensuring a consistent supply to sustain consumer trust.
Thofiya, Chair of the Kawasi Women Farmers Group, said the farming program has brought tangible benefits to her family.
"We are grateful to the company because the proceeds from our first and second harvests in Akelamo enabled us to support our grandchild’s education through high school in Bacan," she said.
The transformation has also been felt across the wider community. Abu Jaya, a community leader and village official in Soligi, said that group members have not only improved their farming skills but have also begun to manage agricultural activities collectively and more effectively.

For Harita Nickel, the field school program goes beyond agricultural training. It is designed to foster community self-reliance, particularly among women, by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to develop sustainable farming practices independently and share their experience with others in their villages.
Across the hillsides of Soligi and Kawasi, now dotted with thriving horticultural crops, the impact is becoming increasingly visible. The change has emerged gradually but meaningfully. Through the dedication of local women, land that was once cultivated on a limited scale has evolved into a new source of livelihood, helping to strengthen household incomes and create opportunities for the future.

Field School in Obi Encourages the Growth of Women’s Self-Reliance in Villages

To mark Eid al-Adha 1447 H, Harita Nickel has distributed 47 sacrificial animals to communities in villages surrounding its operational areas on Obi Island, as well as several locations across North Maluku.
The animals comprised 44 cattle and three goats. A total of 26 were distributed to villages near the company’s operations on Obi Island through local religious leaders. The remainder were allocated to communities in Labuha, Ternate and Ambon through local partners as part of a distribution program running through May 30, 2026.
The annual sacrificial animal donation has become a regular part of Harita Nickel’s Eid al-Adha observance, reflecting the company’s commitment to supporting local communities and strengthening ties with residents around its operational areas.

Harita Nickel Executive Vice President of External Relations, Latif Supriadi, said Eid al-Adha provides an important opportunity to reinforce the values of togetherness and social solidarity.
“Through this initiative, we hope to share the joy of Eid al-Adha with communities, particularly those living around our operational areas. We also hope to continue nurturing the strong relationships that have been built over the years,” Latif said. He added that the company remains committed to growing alongside local communities through a range of social and community development programs.
Appreciation for the company’s contribution was expressed by Ahmad Osalia, imam of Madinatul Hijrah Mosque in the new Kawasi settlement.
According to Ahmad, the donation reflects the spirit of compassion and generosity embodied in Eid al-Adha.
“We are grateful for the company’s attention and support for the community. This assistance is highly meaningful for residents and serves as a reminder of the values of sharing and caring that Eid al-Adha teaches,” he said.
Ahmad also praised the company’s support for residents in the new Kawasi settlement, including the provision of housing facilities and comfortable places of worship.
Similar appreciation came from Taslim Yamin, head of the Shuffah Hizbullah Quranic Boarding School in Panamboang, South Halmahera. He thanked Harita Nickel and journalists from South Halmahera for their social support and concern for both the boarding school and surrounding communities.
Taslim said the donation program represented more than just material assistance, bringing joy and gratitude to students and residents alike.
“We are thankful for the support shown by Harita Nickel and the journalists of South Halmahera. We hope initiatives such as this, particularly the distribution of sacrificial animals during Eid al-Adha, can continue every year,” he said.
He also expressed hope that Harita Nickel would continue to grow and generate wider benefits for society, while local journalists remain a reliable source of positive and constructive information.
“We hope Harita Nickel continues to thrive as a successful, progressive and socially responsible company. We also hope journalists in South Halmahera will continue to serve as a trusted source of information for the public,” he added.

Beyond serving as a moment of giving, Eid al-Adha celebrations in villages surrounding the company’s operations are also closely intertwined with local cultural traditions.
Ishak La Puasa, a religious leader from Soligi Village, said residents have preserved a distinctive tradition that has been passed down through generations and continues to be observed during Eid al-Adha.
Before the animals are slaughtered, they are bathed, draped in white cloth and paraded around the mosque as a gesture of respect and gratitude.
“This tradition has been handed down for generations among the Butonese community in Soligi. After the sacrificial rites are completed, residents usually continue the celebration with a performance of Ngibi, a traditional cultural art form that brings the community together,” he said.
For the people of Soligi, Eid al-Adha is not only a religious observance but also an opportunity to strengthen social bonds and preserve local cultural heritage.
Through this year’s Eid al-Adha celebration, Harita Nickel aims to continue supporting the values of generosity, togetherness, and social care in the communities around its operations.

Harita Nickel Distributes 47 Sacrificial Animals Across Obi Island and Ternate for Eid al-Adha 1447 H

The gentle breeze sweeping across Lake Karo awakened the memories of Jofi Cako and Teo Jurumudi. For these two young men from Kawasi Village, this natural body of water is far more than a mere ecosystem; it was their childhood playground, a place where they would fish and catch eels until dusk.
Teo’s emotional connection is even more personal. His gaze fixed intently on a small patch of land in the middle of the lake, where his family, along with a dozen other households, once resided, living in perfect harmony with nature.
"This vast lake is an inseparable part of our identity," he said softly.
These tales of the past resurfaced on a Saturday morning (May 23). This time, no longer there to play, Jofi and Teo arrived to guide approximately 30 villagers on a "Cultural Heritage Expedition." In collaboration with Harita Nickel, they led the community in retracing their ancestors' footsteps, which now lie within the Obi Industrial Area.

The presence of Kawasi Village's Traditional Leader, Otniel Datang, among the group deepened the sense of nostalgia. He recounted that their forebears originally named the waters Talaga Diki-Diki or Talaga Ma Hilo in the language of the Tobelo, the first tribe to inhabit Obi Island. It translates to "Dammar Lake," referring to the ancient practice of locals who frequently foraged for dammar resin in the vicinity to use as night lamps.
"The atmosphere hasn't changed much. That small island is still there, and the water remains clear and green. This is a heritage we must protect together," he urged, gazing out over the expanse of water.
This message of preservation instantly resonated with the younger generation. For Kresya L., an eighth-grade student at Loji Permai Junior High School, the pristine beauty of Lake Karo and the majestic remnants of De Brill Fort had, until now, been nothing more than bedtime stories told by her parents.

Today, De Brill Fort, once obscured by dense forest, has been restored as a cultural heritage site jointly managed by the North Maluku Cultural Preservation Agency (BPK) and Harita Nickel.

"Today we proved that the nature surrounding Lake Karo has not been destroyed, contrary to circulating rumors. The lake is well-maintained, and its presence even contributes to surface water taxes for regional development," he explained.

To celebrate National Book Day and the 46th anniversary of the National Library, Harita Nickel is strengthening the management of digital-based school libraries on Obi Island as part of efforts to improve access to literacy and the quality of education.
The program was implemented at Loji Permai Junior High School and Tunas Muda Senior High School in Kawasi Village, South Halmahera. On this occasion, the company donated 1,700 textbooks and general knowledge books, as well as science laboratory equipment and sports equipment to support the learning progress for the students. Harita Nickel's Community Social Responsibility Supervisor, Ragil Pardiantoro, said that strengthening the spirit for literacy and access to education is an important part of supporting the development of the younger generation on Obi Island.

"By strengthening this digital-based library, we hope students will have better access to learning and be motivated to continue developing and achieving their dreams," he said.
In his additional statement, he said that the company also wants to encourage the emergence of a younger generation of Obi who are able to compete and achieve at a wider level.
"We challenge all of you to be ready to become champions and achievers in the future, including in competitions like the Science Olympiad. A passion for learning and reading must be starting from now," he said.
To support the optimalization of book collections, Harita Nickel is also strengthening school library management through the implementation of the Simple Perpus application. This system helps schools to record collections and manage book loans, making them more organized and easier to manage. As part of the program's implementation, Harita Nickel's IT team also provided training to 10 teachers as a library staff on how to use the application.

The principal of Tunas Muda High School, Obet Siar, expressed his appreciation for the company's support in developing educational facilities at the school.
"In the past, access to books wasn't as easy as it is now. With more comprehensive facilities at the school, we hope students will be more motivated to learn and excel," he said.
One of the students, Syifa Nur Jannah, also expressed her enthusiasm for the assistance provided.
"Now we have a wider selection of books to study with, so we're more enthusiastic for coming to the library," she said.

National Book Day, Harita Nickel Encourages Digitalization of School Libraries on Obi Island

Discussions about endemic wildlife filled a classroom at State Senior High School 35 South Halmahera in Soligi Village, Obi Island. The animals being discussed were not species from distant places, but creatures that live close to the students’ daily lives: the Obi Cuscus, Moluccan Hanging Parrot, Ternate Lorikeet, Halmahera Cuckooshrike and Sailfin Lizard.
The students’ enthusiasm echoed the spirit of the International Day for Biodiversity, observed every May 22. This year’s theme, “Acting Locally for Global Impact”, highlights how efforts to protect biodiversity can begin within local communities while creating broader impacts.
That spirit is reflected in Sahabat Konservasi, an environmental education initiative run by Harita Nickel on Obi Island. The program encourages students to learn about the rich biodiversity of Obi Island and North Maluku, while understanding the relationship between wildlife, forests and local communities.

During the May 6, 2026 session, 42 students took part in an interactive learning program led by the conservation team from Harita Nickel’s Sustainability Department. Through a combination of endemic wildlife visualizations, simulations and group discussions, students were introduced to the ecological roles of wildlife and the importance of protecting habitats around them.
Harita Nickel Conservation Specialist Ricky Danang Pratama said the interactive approach was chosen to make conservation topics easier for students to understand.
“We want students not only to recognize the names of endemic species, but also to understand their role in the ecosystem and their connection to the lives of communities on Obi Island,” he said.
The “know and care” approach lies at the heart of the program, based on the belief that environmental awareness often grows from a sense of closeness to nature.
“I just learned that animals we often see actually play an important role in the forest. It makes me more aware that protecting the environment is also important for our future on Obi,” said Sahrul, one of the participating students.

Yarni, a biology teacher at State Senior High School 35 South Halmahera, said the approach helped students understand environmental issues in a more contextual way.
“Conservation materials become easier to understand because the examples are closely related to students’ daily lives. The students are also more enthusiastic during discussions,” the teacher said.
The program was also evaluated through pre-tests and post-tests, which showed an average increase in participants’ scores of around 30.6 percent.
Sahabat Konservasi has been running since 2025, targeting elementary to senior high school students in Soligi and Kawasi villages. To date, the program has reached around 170 students and will continue to expand to schools in other villages surrounding the company’s operational areas.

Environmental education on the protection of endemic wildlife and plants has also been provided to local communities. Last April, Harita Nickel, in collaboration with the Natural Resources Conservation Agency of North Maluku, held a public awareness campaign on the importance of protecting biodiversity and wildlife habitats. Environmental awareness programs are also regularly conducted for employees as part of efforts to foster a conservation culture within the company’s operational areas.
Harita Nickel Conservation Superintendent Sephy Noerfahmy said community involvement was a key element in safeguarding environmental sustainability on Obi Island.
“Conservation must be built collectively. That is why we want awareness about protecting biodiversity to grow not only within the workplace, but also among local communities and younger generations,” Sephy said.
Amid Obi Island’s rich biodiversity and expanding industrial activities, creating space for environmental dialogue has become increasingly important. Through Sahabat Konservasi, Harita Nickel seeks to build a shared understanding that protecting habitats and wildlife is a collective responsibility.
On Obi Island, that effort is now beginning in classrooms. Through students’ curiosity about the wildlife living around them, awareness about protecting the environment is expected to gradually grow.

How Harita Nickel Introduces Obi’s Biodiversity to Local Children

Harita Nickel partnered with local fishermen through the 2026 Soligi Fishing Festival to help strengthen the coastal economy on Obi Island while supporting locally sourced food supplies for company operations.
The event, held on May 2–3, 2026, involved 20 participants, all of whom were residents and fishermen from Soligi Village in South Obi District, South Halmahera Regency.
More than just a competition, the festival also served as a platform for collaboration between the company and the local community in supporting the sustainable use of local marine resources.
During the festival, participants landed a total catch of 21.6 kilograms of fish. The largest catch was a 6.1-kilogram Giant Trevally, locally known as Bobara.

All catches were purchased directly by the company through the Sentra Usaha Tani Nelayan (SUTAN) program. The initiative allows the company to purchase catches directly from local fishermen to support fish supplies for its operational canteens.
Manihadi, one of the participants from Soligi, welcomed the initiative. He said the festival provided direct economic benefits for local fishermen while also strengthening collaboration between the community and the company.
“Events like this are very meaningful for us fishermen. Not only do they motivate us, but our catches are also purchased directly, so the economic benefits are truly felt by the community,” he said.
For the company, the Soligi Fishing Festival forms part of its broader effort to strengthen community-based economic development while fostering closer engagement with communities surrounding its operational areas.

On the southern coast of Obi Island, South Halmahera, afternoons now paint a different picture. After school hours, children gather at a modest community learning house, where laughter echoes through reading sessions and play activities, reflecting a new chapter for education in this remote region.
The learning houses established across South Obi have evolved beyond literacy spaces. They now serve as safe and inclusive environments where hope is nurtured, while also becoming community gathering points that help strengthen social cohesion among residents.
The initiative continues to expand. Marking Indonesia’s National Education Day on May 2nd, 2026, Harita Nickel inaugurated the Nyinga Moi Learning House in Fluk Village, South Obi District. The facility adds to two previously established learning houses in Gambaru and Oci Maloleo villages, further strengthening community-based educational access in the region.
The name Nyinga Moi, meaning “One Heart,” embodies the spirit of collaboration between Harita Nickel, the village government, and the local community. Much like the Simore Learning House in Gambaru, the facility was designed as an inclusive and child-friendly space, promoting an enjoyable and engaging learning environment for children.

For local residents, the presence of the learning house has helped address challenges faced by parents in the community. Nadia Abdullah, a parent from Fluk Village, expressed concern over children spending too much time on mobile devices and gadgets.
“Nowadays, children spend much of their time on mobile phones, which often affects their focus on learning. Through the presence of this learning house, we hope they can become more engaged in their studies and participate in more positive and meaningful activities,” she said.
In Gambaru Village, the Simore Learning House, which has been active since 2024, has become an integral part of community life. Children gather to learn and read, while parents, particularly mothers, come together to share stories and experiences. Through these simple interactions, a sense of social support has grown, strengthening optimism for the children’s future.
Syaiful Bahry, a psychology lecturer at Universitas Muhammadiyah Maluku Utara and Chair of the Himpunan Psikologi Indonesia (HIMPSI) Maluku Utara, views the phenomenon as extending beyond the function of formal education.

“The presence of communal public spaces such as learning houses can help reduce stress, strengthen social relationships, and foster parents’ hopes for their children’s future,” he said.
He emphasized that hope is a vital component of psychological well-being. According to him, the presence of learning houses sends a positive message that children in remote communities have greater opportunities for a brighter future.
The learning approach implemented at the facilities is also tailored to the developmental needs of early-age children. Centered on a fun learning concept, the program encourages children to learn through play in a supportive and pressure-free environment.
“Psychologically, a comfortable learning environment enhances children’s cognitive abilities and strengthens memory retention. Children are able to learn without fear of making mistakes, and this is essential in building self-confidence,” Syaiful said.

The learning methods employed also emphasize a supportive and inclusive approach. Instead of being compared with one another, children are encouraged to develop according to their own abilities and pace. Activities such as storytelling and story retelling not only help strengthen language comprehension, but also support children’s emotional development, from recognizing happiness to building empathy.
The volunteers play an integral role in sustaining the initiative. In addition to developing the facilities, Harita Nickel also provides volunteers with basic mentoring and child engagement skills.
“Volunteers are not simply teaching children how to read, but also becoming trusted figures who help children feel valued and emotionally secure,” he said.
At the same time, the company reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the development of local human capital through education-driven initiatives.
Latif Supriadi, Executive Vice President External Relations at Harita Nickel, said the development of the learning houses forms part of the company’s Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM), which aims to broaden access to quality education across Obi Island.
“Beyond establishing learning houses, we also provide incentives for assistant teachers, educational facility support, and scholarships for university students from Obi Island,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of parental involvement, including through parenting and knowledge-sharing activities. In this way, the learning process does not stop at the learning house, but continues into everyday life at home.

The development of learning houses in South Obi reflects a collaborative effort between Harita Nickel, the village government, and local educational institutions. The presence of the learning house in Oci Maloleo, alongside the inauguration of Nyinga Moi in Fluk, has further expanded the reach and impact of the initiative across the region.
Mulyadi Tutupoho, Head of the Dinas Kearsipan dan Perpustakaan (Disarpus) North Maluku, welcomed the initiative as part of broader efforts to expand access to education in remote communities.
“This initiative provides meaningful support to the government’s mission of advancing education, particularly for children living in the village,” he said.
He also expressed hope that similar efforts would inspire greater participation from other industry players, strengthening collaboration in building a more inclusive education ecosystem across North Maluku.
On Obi Island, the learning houses may appear modest in form. Yet within these small spaces, larger hopes are being nurtured, and hopes for a future where children now have greater opportunities and more reasons to dream.
