The Obi Fishing Tournament 2025 organized by Harita Nickel on June 14-15 brought an unexpectedly meaningful moment in marine conservation. One participant, Zulfikri R. Salim, caught a tiger shark, an apex predator not listed among the competition’s targeted species. Following sustainable fishing practices enforced by the tournament regulations, the shark was immediately released back into its natural habitat.

The organizers awarded Zulfikri with a special recognition, the "Unique Catch" category, highlighting not only the sportsmanship and compliance of participants with sustainable fishing rules but also sending a powerful message about the importance of marine life conservation around Obi Island.

Juvenile or young Napoleon wrasse found in the waters surrounding Harita Nickel’s operations on Obi Island.

“The presence of tiger sharks indicates a balanced marine ecosystem that continues to support large marine species. This is an essential positive indicator for us as we strive to operate responsibly and sustainably,” explained Aldico Satria Ganesa, Marine Ecology Foreman at Harita Nickel.

The richness of Obi Island’s marine biodiversity is further demonstrated by the discovery of other significant species during marine ecology monitoring around Kawasi Village waters. Notably, the Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), a giant reef fish capable of reaching lengths of up to two meters and weighing up to 190 kilograms, inhabits these waters.

Known for being docile and often approaching divers, the Napoleon wrasse has a unique characteristic: it's a hermaphroditic species, capable of changing sex from female to male. It also plays a vital role as a natural predator of sea urchins and crown-of-thorns starfish, two species that can damage reefs if their populations are uncontrolled.

There's also the green humphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon muricatum), locally known as "ikan mami" or "tabongkula." This largest parrotfish species is known for its strong teeth and head, capable of biting and crushing dead coral into white sand grains. Though rarely seen, specimens over three feet long are still occasionally encountered in Obi's waters, indicating that the coral reef conditions in this area remain supportive of large species sensitive to environmental pressure.

The Fishing Tournament held this year by Harita Nickel in collaboration with local residents confirmed that the waters of Obi remain productive.

"The underwater beauty of West Obi Island is like a mesmerizing natural gallery. This area is also an important habitat for various key species, such as Napoleon wrasse, groupers, and reef sharks, indicating a well-maintained ecosystem," Aldico added.

With such extraordinary biodiversity, Harita Nickel remains firmly committed to operating responsibly and sustainably, supporting conservation initiatives for a better future in Obi Island.

Obi's Marine Biodiversity: From Tiger Sharks to Napoleon Wrasse

Demonstrating its commitment to employee safety and operational sustainability, Harita Nickel, in collaboration with the Disaster Risk Reduction Center (DRRC) of the University of Indonesia, will organize a Large-Scale Exercise (LSE) or Integrated Disaster Management and Emergency Response Simulation at its operational site on Obi Island from July 27–29, 2025.

Carrying the theme "Integrated Management of Natural and Technological Disasters," this LSE is an advanced development of the company’s routine emergency drills, designed to further strengthen preparedness and response capabilities.

The Command Center serves as the central hub for monitoring, managing, and controlling operational activities in an emergency.

This LSE, themed "Integrated Management of Natural and Technological Disasters", builds upon routine drills to enhance the team's readiness and response capabilities in emergency situations. The exercise will involve employees from various departments across all business units, who will participate as emergency response task forces as well as simulated victims.

According to Supriyanto Suwarno, Occupational Health and Safety Manager at Harita Nickel, the drill scenario is a complex disaster within the downstream nickel and cobalt industry. It will simulate an earthquake followed by a tsunami, causing operational disruptions and employee casualties. Additionally, this disaster triggers a Natech (Natural Hazard Triggering Technological Disaster) incident, involving power disruptions and potential gas leaks in the acid plant area.

"This LSE will be conducted simultaneously across all business units to test the coordination and rapid response capabilities of all teams. This activity is purely preventive and aims to enhance the company's capability in managing emergency situations," explained Supriyanto.

At its core, our emergency response drill is driven by the mission to safely rescue both employees and company assets, ensuring no injuries occur. Achieving this requires careful, accurate execution and the swift readiness of our well-trained teams.

He further added that the scenario was developed based on a thorough study by DRRC UI, as part of a meticulously planned mitigation effort. This training reflects the company's proactive approach to anticipate and manage various risks systematically.

Preparations for the LSE have been underway since June 2025. The task force structure involves departmental representatives from all business units. Adhering to the Incident Command System (ICS), a recognized standard in emergency management, the task force is divided into four divisions: Operations, Planning, Logistics, and Administration.

"Given the vast and complex nature of our operations here, an integrated emergency response task force involving all business units is crucial," stated Erich Marvin Rizal Mongdong, the field coordinator for the exercise. "While we routinely conduct small-scale drills, this large-scale integrated simulation will further strengthen our team's readiness for real-world emergencies."

During the emergency response drill, Harita Nickel's Emergency Response Team conducted a casualty evacuation, simulating a pipeline leak scenario at a fuel dispensing station.

Prior to the main exercise, the team conducted a Table Top Exercise and a Document Review Exercise, guided by DRRC University of Indonesia on July 24, 2025. These preliminary steps aimed to ensure the effectiveness of the ICS in a multi-hazard scenario and the readiness of standard operating procedure documents for each unit.

“During the simulation, participants will be evaluated by external observers from DRRC UI and relevant stakeholders from the South Halmahera Regency and North Maluku Provincial Governments,” Erich noted, highlighting three key objectives of emergency management: (1) ensuring employee safety, (2) protecting company assets, and (3) guaranteeing operational continuity post-disaster.

Through this large-scale emergency response simulation, Harita Nickel advances its capabilities in mitigating and managing workplace risks, reinforcing its commitment to occupational safety and operational sustainability.

Enhance Preparedness, Harita Nickel Conduct Large-Scale Integrated Emergency Response Exercise

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept where businesses take responsibility for the impacts of their decisions and activities on society and the environment.

However, CSR is still often misunderstood as being limited to charity events such as building schools or providing donations. In reality, CSR is much broader and more strategic.

At Harita Nickel, CSR is an integral part of our corporate strategy, focused on delivering long-term value for surrounding communities while supporting environmental sustainability. This article will explore the CSR concept in greater depth and how Harita Nickel puts it into action on the ground.

What is CSR?

There are many definitions of CSR. One widely recognized reference is from ISO 26000: “CSR is an organization’s responsibility for the impacts of its decisions and activities on society and the environment, through transparent and ethical behavior that contributes to sustainable development, including the health and welfare of society; takes into account the expectations of stakeholders; complies with applicable laws and is consistent with international norms of behavior; and is integrated throughout the organization.”

Meanwhile, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development defines CSR as “a business commitment to contribute to sustainable economic development while improving the quality of life of employees and their families, the local community, and society at large.”

Both definitions highlight that CSR is not merely about running social programs—it is about a company taking full responsibility for its actions across all aspects of operations.

Key Areas of CSR

According to ISO 26000, corporate social responsibility covers seven key interrelated areas. These serve as a guide for companies to operate ethically, transparently, and in ways that make positive contributions to society and the environment.

1. Organizational Governance

Good governance means building ethical, open, and accountable leadership and decision-making systems. It includes how companies manage risks and maintain stakeholder trust.

At Harita Nickel, good governance is reflected in policies such as our Board Working Guidelines, Code of Ethics and Conduct, Anti-Bribery, Corruption, and Money Laundering Policy, Responsible Procurement Policy, and Whistleblowing Policy.

2. Human Rights

Companies are responsible for respecting and protecting the fundamental rights of individuals. This includes human rights due diligence, grievance mechanisms, and protecting vulnerable groups.

Harita Nickel integrates human rights principles into all operations. We voluntarily align our approach with international standards such as the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) and conduct Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) to identify and prevent potential impacts on human rights.

3. Labor Practices

This area emphasizes creating a safe, fair, and supportive work environment—covering industrial relations, workplace safety, employee training, and social protection.

Harita Nickel implements the ISO 45001 international occupational health and safety standard. Additionally, our wage policies align with ILO Convention 131 on Minimum Wage Fixing.

4. The Environment

Companies must minimize negative environmental impacts and actively participate in natural resource conservation—including pollution control, resource efficiency, and ecosystem protection.

Harita Nickel is committed to operating with minimal environmental impact. We adopt the international standards such as ISO 14001 and the IRMA standards in our environmental management practices.

5. Fair Operating Practices

Fair business practices mean rejecting all forms of corruption, respecting the law, and promoting healthy and honest competition.

This commitment is demonstrated through our Anti-Bribery, Corruption, and Money Laundering Policy. All Harita Nickel employees receive training on this policy to ensure integrity is embedded in our corporate culture.

6. Consumer Issues

Companies are responsible for offering safe and reliable products and services, providing clear information, protecting personal data, and complying with regulations.

One of Harita Nickel’s business units, PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, has passed the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) audit by the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI). This ensures that our raw nickel materials are sourced responsibly and meet global standards.

7. Community Involvement and Development

CSR also means contributing to the social and economic well-being of local communities. This can take many forms—from education, healthcare, and skills training to infrastructure development.

Harita Nickel runs community empowerment programs across six key areas: education, healthcare, economic development, socio-cultural initiatives, environmental conservation, and infrastructure. In 2024, these efforts received an excellent community satisfaction score of 89 (based on the Community Satisfaction Index/IKM).

As illustrated, community programs are just one part of a company’s broader responsibility. True CSR integrates ethics and sustainability throughout the entire business operation.

CSR Principles

To ensure CSR is genuinely embedded in corporate culture, companies should adhere to the following principles:

Accountability
Companies must take responsibility for the impacts of their decisions and actions on society and the environment.

Transparency
Information about the company’s impacts, policies, and decisions should be communicated clearly, openly, and honestly.

Ethical Behavior
Companies should always act with honesty, integrity, and fairness.

Respect for Stakeholder Interests
Companies must understand and consider the needs and expectations of all stakeholders affected by their activities.

Compliance with the Law
All company activities must comply with applicable laws and regulations.

Respect for International Norms of Behavior
In addition to local laws, companies should uphold internationally recognized standards of behavior.

Respect for Human Rights
All business activities must uphold human rights, both internally and externally.

At Harita Nickel, social and environmental responsibility is an inseparable part of how we do business. We believe that corporate success should not only be measured by financial results but also by the positive impact we create for society and the environment.

Through ethical and sustainable business practices, we are committed to delivering long-term value for all stakeholders. For more details on our progress, please refer to the Harita Nickel 2024 CSR Report.

Understanding CSR: Definition, Key Areas, and How Harita Nickel Puts It into Practice

At first glance, coral reefs may appear to be nothing more than colorful rocks beneath the sea. In reality, they are the foundation of marine life—providing food, shelter, and protection for more than 25% of the world’s marine species.

Indonesia is home to the largest expanse of coral reefs in the world, covering an estimated 51,000 square kilometers—around 18% of the world’s total coral reef area, which spans approximately 284,300 square kilometers. Even more remarkable, Indonesia is located within the Coral Triangle, making its reefs not only vast but also incredibly diverse.

What Are Coral Reefs?

Coral reefs are natural structures formed by colonies of tiny marine animals called coral polyps, which live in symbiosis with microalgae known as zooxanthellae. These colonies deposit calcium carbonate as they grow, creating the hard surfaces that serve as a habitat for thousands of marine species.

Interestingly, coral polyps belong to the phylum Cnidaria, which also includes jellyfish—making them distant relatives!

The Ecological and Socio-Economic Value of Coral Reefs

Coral reefs provide vital benefits to both marine ecosystems and human communities:

1. The Ecological Benefits

Biodiversity hotspot
More than 25% of marine species—including fish, mollusks, turtles, and microorganisms—depend on coral reefs for survival.

Coastal protection
Coral reefs help break the force of waves, reducing coastal erosion and protecting communities from tidal flooding. Studies show that reefs can dissipate up to 97% of wave energy.

Ecosystem balance
Coral reefs play a key role in the marine food chain and nutrient cycling.

2. Socio-Economic Benefits

Livelihoods for coastal communities
Many local fishermen rely on fish species that inhabit coral reefs.

Marine tourism
Destinations such as Raja Ampat, Bunaken, and Wakatobi are renowned for their spectacular coral reefs, creating significant opportunities in tourism and boosting local economies.

Types of Coral Reefs

Coral reefs are generally classified into three main types:

Fringing Reefs
Found along coastlines and accessible, these reefs are popular snorkeling sites.

Barrier Reefs
Separated from the shore by a deep lagoon. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is a famous example.

Atolls
Circular reefs that form around sunken volcanic islands, often enclosing a central lagoon.

Harita Nickel’s Commitment to Coral Reef Conservation

As a mining company operating on Obi Island, Harita Nickel recognizes the critical role marine ecosystems—particularly coral reefs—play in maintaining environmental balance. The company is committed to actively contributing to their preservation through various ongoing initiatives.

1. Coral Reef Restoration Program

Since 2021, Harita Nickel has been developing reef cubes—hollow concrete blocks made from a mix of cement, nickel slag, and fly ash—that serve as artificial substrates for coral growth. By the end of 2024, a total of 1,871 reef cubes had been deployed on the seabed.

Harita Nickel’s Environmental Marine team conducted observations from October 2022 to December 2024 and reported that natural coral growth ranged from 0.93 cm to 6.64 cm—well above the average natural growth rate of 0.3 cm to 2 cm per year.

In addition, 136 species of reef fish from 61 genera and 24 families were recorded in the coral restoration areas.

2. Protecting Obi Island’s Marine Water Quality

Harita Nickel does not discharge production waste into the sea. Instead, the company has built sediment ponds to filter runoff water from mining operations, preventing excessive sedimentation that could harm coral reefs.

3. Routine Marine Environmental Monitoring

Harita Nickel’s dedicated Environment Marine Division is tasked with ensuring that the waters around Obi Island remain in good condition.

The team conducts daily, monthly, and quarterly monitoring of marine conditions. Every six months, the company also partners with independent experts to conduct comprehensive water quality testing around Obi Island.

Through this monitoring, Harita Nickel can identify potential risks early and implement corrective actions to help maintain the health and sustainability of the local marine ecosystem.

Coral Reefs—A Precious Marine Legacy to Be Protected

Coral reefs are not only essential for life beneath the waves but also for human well-being. Through collective conservation efforts by local communities, governments, and responsible industries such as Harita Nickel, we can help safeguard these vital ecosystems for generations to come.

As a nation blessed with extraordinary marine biodiversity, Indonesia carries a significant responsibility to serve as a global steward of coral reef conservation.

Coral Reefs: Definition, Benefits, and Harita Nickel’s Role in Their Preservation

Indonesia is home to the world’s largest reserves of nickel ore — a mineral that plays a critical role across multiple industries, from stainless steel production to electric vehicle batteries. Yet, nickel does not occur in nature as a solid metal. Instead, it is found in the form of nickel ores, of which there are two main types globally: saprolite and limonite.

Although both ores originate from the same rock weathering process, saprolite and limonite differ significantly in terms of composition, color, depth of deposit, and the technologies required for processing.

Here, we take a closer look at the key differences between the two!

Saprolite Nickel Ore

Often referred to as "high-grade nickel ore," saprolite typically contains between 1.5% and 3.0% nickel.

Due to its higher nickel content, the extraction process for saprolite ore is comparatively more efficient, utilizing smelting methods such as Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF).

However, saprolite deposits are located in deeper layers of the earth’s crust, which presents greater challenges in mining.

The primary product derived from saprolite ore is ferronickel—an alloy of iron and nickel—which is a key raw material in the production of stainless steel.

Limonite Nickel Ore

Limonite is generally classified as "low-grade nickel ore," with nickel content ranging from 0.8% to 1.5%. However, limonite ore also offers distinct advantages due to its cobalt content, which typically ranges between 0.1% and 0.2%.

Processing limonite requires more advanced technologies, such as High-Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL)—a method that involves leaching the ore with heated sulfuric acid to extract valuable metals.

The result is Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), a solid mixture of nickel and cobalt, which can be further refined into nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate for use in various industries, including battery manufacturing.

Nickel Ore Processing at Harita Nickel

Harita Nickel is not only engaged in nickel ore mining but also the integrated processing of ore into value-added products. All operations are conducted on Obi Island, located in South Halmahera Regency.

As of August 2024, Harita Nickel’s latest refinery facility has been fully commissioned and is now operational, following the completion of the company’s RKEF smelting facilities in 2023.

Today, Harita Nickel operates a total of 12 RKEF production lines, with a combined capacity of 120,000 tons of contained nickel in ferronickel, alongside 6 HPAL production lines, with an equivalent capacity of 120,000 tons of contained nickel in MHP.

A clear understanding of the distinctions between saprolite and limonite nickel ores highlights the complexity of modern nickel processing—from the inherent properties of the ores themselves to the advanced technologies utilized.

At Harita Nickel, this process is carried out through an integrated and sustainable approach, delivering high-value nickel products while prioritizing environmental responsibility.

A Closer Look at Nickel Ores: Understanding the Difference Between Saprolite and Limonite

Harita Nickel concluded its 2025 World Environment Day (WED) commemoration series with the Harita Youth Forum, an educational initiative aimed at engaging the company’s younger generation. This year’s forum carried the theme “SDGs and Responsible Mining” and was attended by over 200 participants from various Harita Nickel business units operating on Obi Island.

The event featured Dr. Tri Edhi Budhi Soesilo, M.Si., a lecturer from the School of Environmental Sciences, University of Indonesia, as the keynote speaker. In his presentation, Dr. Budhi emphasized the critical importance of integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into industrial operations, particularly within the mining sector, which has a profound impact on social, economic, and environmental dimensions.

He introduced the Responsible Mining approach–mining practices that strike a balance between economic productivity, ecosystem protection, and respect for the rights of local communities.

“Doing no harm, doing good, and doing it transparently,” he remarked, underlining that sustainability must begin with a strong understanding of local context and inclusive community engagement in development efforts.

Before the discussion session, participants viewed the documentary Ngomi O Obi (“We Who Live in Obi”), which portrays the daily lives of Obi Island residents who live alongside nickel mining activities. The film offered an authentic perspective on the social and environmental challenges faced by local communities, while also reinforcing the importance of inclusive and sustainable mining practices.

Harita Nickel’s commitment to environmental responsibility was also reaffirmed by Retno Dewi Handayani, Green Mining Manager, who emphasized that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility. She encouraged all Harita employees to adopt simple, proactive habits, such as reducing single-use plastics and bringing personal tumblers to work.

“Carrying a tumbler and minimizing single-use plastic are small actions that can grow into collective habits, fostering a stronger environmental culture,” she stated.

The interactive Q&A session added valuable depth to the forum. In addressing a question regarding the practical challenges of implementing SDGs, Dr. Budhi emphasized that the success of sustainability initiatives ultimately depends on collective human awareness.

“No regulation will be effective without the consciousness of the people behind it,” he stated firmly.

Harita Youth Forum 2025: A Collaborative Effort Toward Responsible Mining

In commemoration of World Environment Day (WED) 2025, Harita Nickel once again held its Harita Mengajar (Harita Teaching) program. In this knowledge-sharing initiative, Harita Nickel employees educate students living near the company’s operations. This year’s theme was “Stop Plastic Pollution.” The educational session targeted students from Loji Permai Junior High School and Tunas Muda Senior High School in Kawasi Village, Obi Island, South Halmahera, and took place on Monday, June 16, at the New Kawasi Village Health Sub-Center hall.

Aldico Putra Ganesha, chairperson of this event, explained that the program was specifically designed to instill environmental awareness in the younger generation from an early age. “We believe that significant change can begin with simple actions, like throwing waste in the right place, reducing the use of single-use plastics, and spreading this awareness to family and the wider community,” Aldico stated.

The first session was led by Lentina Simangunsong from Harita Nickel’s Environment Compliance and Reporting team. She explained the types of plastics, their non-biodegradable nature, and the environmental harm they cause. “Single-use plastics may be convenient, but their ecological footprint can last longer than a human lifetime,” she emphasized.

The second session was presented by Ricky Danang Pratama, a Conservation Specialist at Harita Nickel, who discussed the impact of waste on biodiversity. Ricky shared real-life examples, ranging from sea turtles entangled in plastic nets to land animals like monkeys injured by human waste. “By understanding real-world cases, we hope students become more aware that small actions can have a significant impact on the environment around them,” Ricky explained.

The event became even more engaging when students showcased creative products made from waste materials collected in their surroundings. These included pencil holders made from used bottles, piggy banks from cans, tissue boxes, and wall decorations crafted from inorganic waste. The creations not only demonstrated creativity but also served as proof that waste can be repurposed when approached with awareness and care.

Servin Langkodi, Principal of Loji Permai Junior High School, expressed his appreciation during his opening remarks. “From this event, we hope students truly understand that protecting the environment is their responsibility to the Earth and the future. Hopefully, this will be the first step toward making them agents of change in their communities,” he said.

Through the Harita Mengajar program, Harita Nickel emphasizes the importance of providing environmental education to school students. By engaging the younger generation, the company hopes the spirit of environmental stewardship will not end with this event, but will grow into a lasting awareness throughout Kawasi and its surrounding areas.

Harita Nickel Promotes Environmental Awareness Among Kawasi Students on the Dangers of Plastic Waste

As part of its ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility, Harita Nickel has distributed 255 food relief packages to residents impacted by recent flooding in the villages of Soligi and Wayaloar, located in South Obi District. Each package comprised 5 kilograms of rice, 1 kilogram of sugar, 2 liters of cooking oil, and one box of instant noodles.

Dindin Makinudin, General Manager of Community Affairs at Harita Nickel, stated that the assistance reflects the company’s solidarity with local communities and its responsibility to support those affected by natural disasters in its operational areas.

“This initiative is a manifestation of our concern and responsibility toward residents within our operational vicinity, who have been impacted by flooding due to extreme weather conditions,” he said.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), through the Sultan Baabullah Ternate Class I Meteorological Station, had earlier issued an early warning regarding the potential for extreme weather and flooding in North Maluku from June 9 to 15, 2025.

Dindin expressed hope that the aid would provide meaningful relief to those in need. “While this support may not address all immediate needs, it represents our sincere intent to be present and assist as one extended family during challenging times,” he added.

He also emphasized that Soligi and Wayaloar are key communities within Harita Nickel’s operational perimeter on Obi Island, and that local communities play a vital role in supporting the company’s ongoing activities.

“We aspire for Harita Nickel’s presence to be impactful not only in times of crisis, but also as a long-term partner in fostering resilience and inclusive growth,” he noted.

One of the recipients, Murni La Patilaya, a resident of Soligi, described how the flooding began at approximately 1:00 PM WIT, shortly after Friday prayers, and subsided two hours later. She likened the event to the major flood in 2005, when the river overflowed and nearly entered residents' homes.

“I am grateful to Harita Nickel for their concern. Going forward, we hope for improved drainage infrastructure to help mitigate future flooding,” she said.

Echoing this sentiment, Herman, the Village Welfare Officer (Kesra) of Soligi, attributed the flooding to high rainfall and inadequate river flow management. He praised Harita Nickel for its swift and responsive action in addressing the needs of affected residents.

Representing the South Obi Subdistrict government, Jamaludin also extended his appreciation to Harita Nickel. He highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between the company, local government, and the community to ensure sustainable operations and shared benefits.

Every day, plastic waste from operational activities and employee routines accumulates, posing significant environmental challenges. However, the Laboratory team at PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), a business unit of Harita Nickel, has innovatively turned this plastic waste into valuable energy through the “From Waste to Energy” project.

The method used is pyrolysis, a thermal decomposition process performed in the absence of oxygen. This process breaks down plastic into oil, gas, and solid residues without burning it. The primary product, a mixed fuel in liquid form, has been successfully used to support various technical operations in the field.

“We aim to address environmental challenges not merely through discussions but through tangible actions,” said Willy Kesuma Dewadi, Head of Technical Support at MSP.

The project, titled “From Waste to Energy,” follows a structured approach: providing designated plastic bins, sorting the plastic waste, building a pyrolysis machine, and testing the final product. Through this process, the team has successfully converted 1,236 kilograms of plastic waste per year into an alternative, cost-effective, environmentally friendly and sustainable energy source.

Economically, this innovation offers significant advantages. With the machine using only 500 watts of power and electricity costing around IDR 1,699 per kWh, production costs are much lower than the market price of plastic-based fuel, which can reach IDR 7,000 per liter. This results in a potential value gain of around IDR 5,300 per liter.

Charles Hasiholan, Deputy Head of HSE and Security at Harita Nickel, emphasized that this project's benefits extend beyond mere cost efficiency. “This initiative clearly demonstrates the company's commitment to environmental sustainability and circular economy practices,” he said.

The project was also featured in the Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI) 2024 competition, an annual event encouraging employees to create real innovations in operations, safety, and environmental management. Internal data shows strong implementation results: 100% completion of the initial stages through to production, and 94% success in fuel testing. Field use of the mixed fuel has reached 67% and continues to grow as technical adjustments are made.

“From Waste to Energy is more than just a technical project. It’s a new way of looking at waste, not as a problem, but as an opportunity for the future of alternative energy,” Willy concluded, proudly showing the team’s homemade pyrolysis machine.

Harita Nickel Turns Plastic Waste Into Alternative Energy

Harita Nickel has introduced a sustainable innovation for domestic wastewater treatment by converting used plastic bottles into an efficient biofilter medium. Through a project named Nirwana Brush, the company's Environment & Business Improvement Department has developed an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution for wastewater treatment plants (IPAL), particularly at the Nirwana employee accommodation facility operated by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk.

The Nirwana IPAL facility utilizes both aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment systems. Both methods rely heavily on biofilter media as a habitat for decomposer microorganisms that play a crucial role in purifying wastewater.

“Usually, we buy biofilter media from suppliers, and it’s quite expensive. Meanwhile, used plastic bottles are available and largely unused,” said M. Saifullah N, a Project Engineer at Harita Nickel.

In this innovation, used plastic bottles collected from the office surroundings are processed through cleaning, cutting, and structured using iron wire to support microbial growth. Laboratory testing confirmed the system's effectiveness, reducing Total Suspended Solids (TSS) from 49 mg/L down to 3 mg/L—an efficiency rate of approximately 93.87%.

“With this approach, we’re not only saving costs but also contributing to the reduction of plastic waste, which is notoriously difficult to decompose,” added Ipul, as the Obi-born engineer is known.

“We asked our coworkers to donate used bottles, and many responded positively. It shows that environmental awareness can grow through simple, real actions,” said Dedi Amrin, Manager of Environment & Business Improvement at Harita Nickel.

With proven results, the project marks a promising first step toward more efficient and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment systems. “Our hope is that this recycling concept can become a new standard for wastewater management across Harita Nickel business units that operate similar treatment systems,” Dedi concluded.
