In the coastal waters off western Obi Island in North Maluku, marine life flourishes in vibrant colors. Parrotfish glide across coral formations, while butterflyfish move delicately among sea anemones. In these same waters, local fishermen still regularly encounter snapper, grouper, yellowtail, and the formidable giant trevally, locally known as bobara.
Not far from these waters, the protected Napoleon wrasse can still be seen roaming Obi’s coral reefs. The presence of these species is more than a striking natural sight. For scientists, they serve as important indicators of a healthy marine ecosystem. Parrotfish, for instance, play a vital role in maintaining coral reef balance by controlling algae growth, while the presence of Napoleon wrasse signals that the marine ecological chain remains well-functioning.

At the same time, the abundance of economically important fish species such as grouper and giant trevally locally known as bobara reflects how a healthy marine ecosystem also supports the sustainability of coastal livelihoods. A well-preserved sea means productive fishing grounds that continue to sustain local fishing communities.
The book is currently in the printing stage and is scheduled for release in the middle of this year by one of Indonesia’s leading national publishers. It is expected to serve both as an educational resource and as a scientific documentation of Obi’s rich marine biodiversity.
Harita Nickel’s Marine Environment team documented this coexistence in a visual publication and scientific compilation titled The Beauty of the Coastal Waters of Western Obi Island – Series I: Reef Fish, A Captivating Mosaic of Marine Life. Developed through extensive field observations, the publication documents dozens of reef fish families along with their characteristics, habitats, and ecological roles.

Harita Nickel Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), Tonny H. Gultom, said the book reflects the company’s commitment to preserving the surrounding marine ecosystem.
“We want the marine biodiversity surrounding Obi not only to be preserved, but also properly documented,” he said.
Tonny added that the publication marks the first installment in a broader marine biodiversity documentation series focused on Obi’s waters. Future studies will expand into coral reef ecosystems and macrobenthos as part of efforts to strengthen public education and science-based conservation initiatives.
The initiative has received positive responses from South Halmahera Regent Hasan Ali Bassam Kasuba, who views the publication as more than just a book, but also as a window into the region’s rich marine biodiversity.
“Collaboration between the government, businesses, and communities must continue to be strengthened to protect the ocean while ensuring sustainable regional development,” Bassam said.
From an academic perspective, the healthy marine conditions observed in Obi’s waters are seen as a positive indicator. Professor of Fish Health Management at Khairun University, Prof. Dr. Muh. Aris, S.Pi., M.P., noted that good mining practices should go hand in hand with ecosystem protection. According to him, various coastal rehabilitation initiatives carried out by the company demonstrate that economic growth and environmental sustainability can progress together.
Beyond its scientific value, the publication also serves as an important bridge between complex scientific knowledge and local wisdom. Fish genetics expert from Sam Ratulangi University, Dr. Ir. Ari Berty Rondonuwu, M.Sc., M.Si., reflected on the publication’s deeper significance for future generations.
“When children on Obi Island begin to recognize and name the fish found in the waters around their homes, that is where a strong sense of belonging and environmental awareness begins to grow,” Ari said.

<figcaption>Reef Cube, an artificial reef made from processed nickel slag and deployed in Obi waters, has begun to support coral growth and provide habitat for various marine species.</figcaption>
</figure>
Ultimately, the book is more than just an archive on a library shelf. Through integrated sustainability programs ranging from mangrove rehabilitation and coral transplantation to the installation of artificial reefs, the publication serves as a record of ongoing efforts to protect Obi’s marine ecosystem. It reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that the waters surrounding Obi Island remain a thriving home for marine life, both today and in the future.

<h2 dir="ltr">What is ESG?</h2>
ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. It is a framework used to assess a company’s performance in managing environmental, social, and governance impacts in a sustainable manner.
The Environmental aspect relates to how a company manages its impact on the environment. Social focuses on the company’s relationships with communities, employees, and stakeholders. Governance emphasizes transparent, accountable, and ethical management practices.
In a global context, ESG serves as an evaluation framework used by investors, business partners, and regulators in decision-making, risk management, and organizational performance assessment based on non-financial indicators covering environmental, social, and governance aspects.
<h2 dir="ltr">Why ESG Matters in the Nickel Mining Industry</h2>
Indonesia’s nickel mining industry plays a crucial role in the global energy transition. Nickel is a key material for electric vehicle batteries, which symbolize the future of clean energy. However, mining activities often face various environmental and social challenges, including waste management, erosion control, and water quality, as well as social issues such as local employment and community engagement dynamics.
ESG principles and frameworks support companies in achieving sustainable goals by ensuring that their operations not only meet global industrial demands but also preserve the environment and provide tangible benefits to surrounding communities. Effective ESG implementation can enhance public trust and strengthen Indonesia’s position globally as a sustainable and responsible nickel supplier.

What Is ESG? Definition and Examples of Application in Indonesian Nickel Mining

In commemoration of Earth Day 2026, Harita Nickel carried out a series of collaborative environmental initiatives across two regions, Kawasi on Obi Island and Ternate. In Kawasi, Insan Harita joined residents in a coastal cleanup that successfully collected 3.2 tons of waste, while in Ternate, Insan Harita took part in the Earth Hour event alongside the local government.
That morning, the Kawasi coastline on Obi Island became a space for collaboration. Dozens of residents, Harita employees, as well as military (TNI) and police (Polri) personnel assigned to the company's area combed the shoreline starting from the old village settlement, picking up trash that had washed ashore.
Plastic bottles, food wrappers, and other household waste were collected in large trash bags. In just about an hour, the initiative successfully removed 3.2 tons of waste from approximately 500 meters of coastline. All collected waste was subsequently transported to the Integrated Waste Management Facility (TPST) within the company area for further processing.
This activity was part of the Earth Day 2026 commemoration themed "Our Power, Our Planet," which serves as an impetus to strengthen collective roles in environmental preservation, particularly the coastal ecosystems that serve as the community's living space.
The initiative went beyond the beach cleanup, continuing with waste management education led by Harita Nickel's Environment team. Through an interactive approach, participants were introduced to various types of waste, their potential impacts on the marine environment, and simple steps they can take to reduce it.
"Plastic bottles can last for hundreds of years, while certain types of waste like styrofoam are not easily biodegradable. If they end up in the ocean, the impact will ultimately return to humans, including coastal communities," said Kevin, the event facilitator.
Dian Kristianto, Technical Support Manager at Harita Nickel, emphasized that this activity is part of the company's ongoing efforts to support responsible environmental management.
"The coast and the ocean are vital parts of the ecosystem and the community's source of livelihood. Therefore, efforts to maintain their cleanliness must be carried out consistently and collaboratively," he stated.
To encourage active participation, the event was packaged using a light and inclusive eco-experience approach. Participants were divided into several groups to compete in various challenges, such as collecting the most trash, finding the most unique waste item, and demonstrating the best teamwork.&nbsp;
This approach proved effective in boosting participant engagement, particularly among the women's groups, who appeared incredibly enthusiastic.
"Through this activity, we have become more aware of the importance of keeping the beach clean. We hope events like this can continue to be held," said one of the residents.
Beyond Kawasi, the Earth Day commemoration series also took place in Ternate. Harita Nickel’ employees participated in the Earth Hour event alongside the local government and various institutions. This participation reflects their support for energy conservation efforts and raising public awareness about climate change.
Through these various initiatives, Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to continuously play an active role in environmental preservation, not only through internal corporate programs but also via collaborations with the community and stakeholders.
From Kawasi to Ternate, the underlying message is clear: protecting the Earth requires collective involvement, concrete actions, and sustainable efforts.<script src="https://cdn.flmngr.com/widgets.js?apiKey=FLMNFLMN" data-ts="1784774004134"></script>

Celebrating Earth, Optimizing Energy: Harita Nickel’s Steps In Managing Emissions

Harita Nickel continues to strengthen its occupational health and safety (OHS) culture, particularly at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), through a more creative communication approach and by reinforcing leadership roles in the field.
One of these efforts is the introduction of Kapita HEBAT, a safety campaign icon that represents the role of every worker in maintaining workplace safety. The character conveys a simple message: safety is everyone’s responsibility.
The name Kapita HEBAT reflects the company’s values, where “Kapita” means a leader at the frontline, while “HEBAT” refers to the spirit of HJF’s Excellent Behavior for Achieving Target, promoting excellent work behavior to achieve targets safely and responsibly.
This initiative is further strengthened through the SMART Leader K3 Environmental Program (K3LH), which prepares leaders to act as the frontline in implementing safety practices across operational areas. SMART Leader (Safety is My Attention and Responsibility to Target Zero Accidents) equips participants with the ability to identify risks and prevent potential accidents at an early stage.
Since its launch in 2025, the program has been attended by 629 employees from HJF and PT Karunia Permai Sentosa (KPS), primarily at the staff to foreman level, including employees who have recently been promoted.
Deputy Department Head of Technical Support Harita Nickel, Agung Aribowo, emphasized that the program is designed to ensure leaders serve as role models in implementing workplace safety.
“Through SMART Leader, we want to ensure that leaders not only understand technical aspects, but also encourage their teams to actively identify potential hazards and ensure that every task is carried out safely,” he said.
The implementation of the program is directly felt in the field. Abdul Karim Amrullah, Equipment Foreman and SMART Leader, noted that the program has improved the team’s awareness in identifying risks before work begins.
“Safety talks and hazard identification have become essential before starting any work, allowing the team to operate more safely,” he said.

Kapita HEBAT and SMART Leader Strengthen Safety Culture at Harita Nickel

Swift and precise emergency responses are never a coincidence; they are the result of rigorously tested systems. To strengthen the reliability of its emergency preparedness, Harita Nickel, through its business units PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) and PT Dharma Cipta Mulia (DCM), recently rolled out comprehensive integrated rescue and medical simulations.
Conducted separately by the two units, these drills served as a crucial stress test for cross-departmental collaboration when facing real-world crises on the ground.
Testing the Integrated Medical System in a Mass Poisoning Scenario
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/mceu_24590042011772953097118.jpg" width="1080" height="720">
<figcaption>Medical personnel examine a worker during a food poisoning response simulation at the company’s healthcare facility.</figcaption>
</figure>
At PT HJF, the drill centered on a medical emergency scenario involving mass food poisoning at the employee mess hall. Initial reports to the Command Center indicated that several employees were experiencing severe nausea, dizziness, and stomach cramps just one hour after lunch.
To test the system’s capacity on a large scale, the simulation involved 15 "victims." Ten were categorized with mild to moderate symptoms (green and yellow triage), while five were in severe condition (red triage). The severe cases were simulated to have experienced repeated vomiting and diarrhea up to ten times—a critical condition that, in reality, threatens to cause severe dehydration and rapid electrolyte imbalance.
Strict triage implementation was key to the crisis response. Red-category patients were immediately evacuated to the Emergency Room (ER) for intensive care, while the others received outpatient treatment.
PT HJF Medical &amp; Paramedic Supervisor, Sugianto, explained that the food poisoning drill aimed to comprehensively evaluate system readiness and identify operational bottlenecks when handling large-scale cases that demand cross-departmental teamwork.
Echoing the urgency, Harita Nickel Site Medical Doctor, dr. Randy Palittin Tonapa, emphasized the fatal risks of massive bodily fluid loss. "Symptoms of vomiting more than three times accompanied by severe stomach cramps must be treated immediately to prevent drops in blood pressure and even loss of consciousness," dr. Randy warned.
Adhering to the principle that "time saving is life saving," he urged employees not to panic during an emergency. Instead, they are advised to contact the Command Center immediately so the integrated medical team can be dispatched to the scene without delay.

Emergency response capabilities were also put to the test at PT DCM through an occupational accident drill in the stone crusher area. The team's agility was measured in a scenario where an employee was trapped in a belt conveyor after the machine suddenly turned on during maintenance.
Upon receiving the emergency report, the Command Center immediately orchestrated the deployment of a joint response team—consisting of Fire and Emergency Services (FES), Clinic, Security, and Safety personnel—to conduct rapid extraction operations and administer first aid.
PT DCM OHS Superintendent, Priyo Adi Pamungkas, explained that the simulation serves as both an educational and evaluative tool to refine evacuation procedures, triage protocols, and identify operational gaps. "The primary goal is to evaluate collaboration among our response teams before we face actual emergencies in the field," he emphasized.
The successful execution of these two drills demonstrates that Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) at Harita Nickel is a dynamic, constantly evolving system. Through continuous procedure evaluations and integrated training, the company ensures that all emergency response elements remain perpetually on standby to protect its most valuable asset: its employees.

Bolstering Emergency Readiness: Harita Nickel Conducts Integrated Rescue and Medical Drills

The holy month of Ramadan does not diminish Harita Nickel’s steadfast commitment to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) across its operations. The spirit of worship aligns seamlessly with the principles of working safely and productively. However, changes in sleep patterns and dietary habits require heightened vigilance against fatigue, a primary trigger for safety incidents.
Embodying the spirit of "One Harita, Looking Out for Each Other" (Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga), safety is an absolute, shared responsibility. Harita Nickel has proactively implemented an integrated mitigation strategy to ensure every worker remains fit and safe while observing their fast.

Beware of the Hidden Danger of Microsleep
Harita Nickel’s Health Management Lead Doctor, Dr. Van Satrio Wibowo, explained that changes to the body's circadian rhythm during the fasting month must be managed with strict discipline.
"A decline in the quality and quantity of sleep carries a high risk of triggering microsleep—a brief, involuntary episode of sleep that can be fatal, particularly for heavy equipment operators. The body actually sends warning signs when fatigue sets in, such as severe drowsiness, burning eyes, frequent yawning, loss of focus, and delayed reaction times," Dr. Van elaborated.
To prevent this, Dr. Van recommends three core pillars for workers:
<ul>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Sleep Management: Ensure 6–8 hours of sleep. Avoid staying up late, and for night shift workers, maximize daytime sleep before reporting for duty.
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Proper Nutrition: Consume complex carbohydrates (brown rice or whole wheat bread), protein, vegetables, and fruits during sahur (pre-dawn meal). Avoid greasy foods and limit caffeine intake at night to maintain sleep quality.
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
The 2-4-2 Hydration Pattern: Prevent dehydration by following the rule of drinking 2 glasses of water at iftar (breaking the fast), 4 glasses at night, and 2 glasses during sahur.
</li>
</ul>
"If a worker experiences symptoms of fatigue while on duty, our OHS procedures are crystal clear: immediately stop the unit in a safe location, rest, and report to the supervisor," he stressed.

&nbsp;
Strict Adherence to 'Fit to Work' Protocols
These medical recommendations are translated into a solid line of defense in the field. OHS Superintendent at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, Syarif Hadi Fatullah, emphasized that fatigue mitigation is a mandatory procedure before operational activities commence.
"There is no compromise when it comes to safety standards. As a proactive mitigation measure, we routinely conduct fatigue checks in the field to verify the Fit to Work status of every individual," Syarif stated.
Before starting a shift, every worker is required to complete a self-assessment, which evaluates whether they have had enough sleep, checks their physical condition (ensuring they are free from dizziness or weakness), and assesses their mental readiness to focus on the job.
"A single second of negligence can have a massive impact on lives and operational continuity. If you don't feel fit, never force yourself; report immediately to your supervisor or the medical team. The fast continues, and operations remain safe. Let's protect ourselves and our team so everyone makes it home safely," he urged.
The strict implementation of these safety systems during Ramadan proves that operations and worker protection can go hand-in-hand. For Harita Nickel, safety is a fundamental value, ensuring that every worker is protected and can return home safely to their families.

Harita Nickel’s Multi-Layered Approach to Prevent Worker Fatigue During Ramadan

Harita Nickel organized an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) workshop as part of the 2026 National OHS Month, carrying the theme “Transforming OHS Culture: Understanding Risks, Controlling Hazards, and Leading Safe and Responsible Work Behavior.” The workshop was attended by Harita Nickel’s management teams from all business units operating on Obi Island.
During the session, participants were encouraged to understand that workplace safety cannot be assessed solely through statistical indicators such as minor accident rates. Fahmi Munsah Ismail, one of the speakers, explained that seemingly positive safety statistics often create a false sense of security, while the potential for fatal risks remains high if operational risk controls are not implemented with discipline.
He emphasized that workplace safety should not be positioned as the responsibility of a single function. In daily operations, those who determine work planning, work methods, and resource allocation have direct control over risks in the field.
<img class="img-fluid" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/workshop%20bk3n%202026_2_1.jpg" width="1000" height="667" data-fm="true">
“Safety is not only the responsibility of the Safety Department; it is the responsibility and accountability of every worker and supervisor,” he stated.
According to Fahmi, supervisors play a crucial role as risk controllers on site. Decisions made in daily activities, especially under pressure from targets and time constraints, greatly influence whether work can be carried out safely. Therefore, safety accountability cannot be delegated to others.
In addition to technical OHS aspects, the workshop also addressed the role of leadership in shaping safe work behavior. Hari Setyowibowo, a psychologist from Padjadjaran University (UNPAD), explained that safety systems and procedures will not be effective without leadership that can influence team attitudes and behavior.
“In the context of culture, rules and systems alone are not enough. Behavioral change occurs largely through the role of a leader,” he said.
He further explained that effective leadership is not solely determined by position, but by the ability to lead by example, build trust, and communicate consistently. This approach encourages workers not merely to comply with safety rules, but to develop an internal commitment to workplace safety.
The impact of this understanding was directly felt by workshop participants. Syarif Yadifatullah, OHS Superintendent of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, stated that the workshop was highly relevant to the challenges of implementing OHS practices in the field.
“This workshop made us realize how decisive the role of leaders is. The safety culture has actually existed, but it has not been implemented consistently,” he said.
<img class="img-fluid n1ed--selected" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/workshop%20bk3n%202026_3_1.jpg" width="1000" height="563" data-fm="true">
According to Syarif, one of the main challenges is ensuring that every work instruction is properly executed on site. He emphasized that verification and follow-up processes are key to preventing workplace accidents.
Through this workshop, Harita Nickel aims to align understanding across its business units that workplace safety is an integral part of operational responsibility and leadership. The activity forms part of the company’s commitment to continuously strengthening its OHS culture transformation, in line with the spirit of #SatuHaritaSalingMenjaga.

Harita Nickel Holds National OHS Workshop 2026 to Strengthen Workplace Safety Culture

The commitment to responsible nickel mining and downstreaming requires more than just slogans; it requires proven technical standards. Responding to this challenge, Harita Nickel has taken on a strategic role in formulating Indonesian National Standards (SNI) related to the utilization of nickel slag, which is now converted into useful materials for environmental restoration, as outlined in SNI 9420:2025. This standard serves as a reference for the safe, measurable, and consistent utilization of slag, while promoting a circular economy approach in post-mining activities.
This step affirms the company's position not only as a nickel producer, but also as a party that encourages the implementation of responsible environmental management practices in order to provide a long-term positive impact on the ecosystem and communities around its operational area on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku.
Nickel slag, a solid material left over from the smelting process using Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology, has been a major consideration in environmental management. Harita Nickel has consistently utilized this slag as a soil conditioner to support post-mining land reclamation and revegetation.
The results are evident: former mining land can be replanted faster, accelerating ecosystem recovery and supporting revegetation and land function restoration efforts for local communities surrounding the mining area.

However, in order for these good practices to be widely and safely adopted, standard references are needed. This is where Insan Harita Nickel plays a vital role. Collaborating with the National Standardization Agency (BSN), experts from Harita Nickel are actively involved in Technical Committee 13-05 on Mineral and Coal Mining Environmental Protection.
Harita Nickel's HSE Director, Tonny Gultom, who is a member of the SNI Formulation Technical Committee, emphasized that the presence of this standard is crucial to create uniformity in the quality of environmental management in the national nickel industry.
"The nickel slag standard provides a harmonized technical reference for industry practitioners. Thus, the utilization of slag in the field has clear, safe, and scientifically and regulatory accountable standards," Tonny explained.
In addition to Tonny, Harita Nickel's Executive Vice President of Environmental Affairs, Iwan Syahroni, also participated as a member of the technical committee, strengthening industry representation in the formulation of this policy.
Technical input also came from Harita Nickel's Vice President of Environmental Green Mining, Retno Dewi Handayani, who served as the SNI draft's conceptualizer. According to Retno, Harita Nickel's empirical experience in the field served as important data in drafting these regulations.

"Our experience in utilizing slag as a soil conditioner for reclamation served as the main reference. The goal is for the resulting national standard to be truly relevant, workable, and ensure long-term environmental safety," said Retno.
The publication of this national standard document is expected to serve as a guideline for the entire nickel industry in managing processing residues wisely. Harita Nickel's active participation in the drafting of this national standard is clear evidence of the company's dedication to not only complying with regulations but also proactively creating new standards in environmental protection and the empowerment of areas surrounding the mine.
