Harita Nickel's sago conservation area in Kawasi will be fully established and managed by the Kawasi Village Government, placing stewardship of the land directly in the hands of the local community. Sago Conservation Area

The Az-Zahra Majlis Taklim (Islamic study group) in Soligi Village, South Obi District, was livelier than usual on Friday afternoon (Feb 20). The enthusiasm of welcoming the holy month of Ramadan blended with the hustle and bustle of dozens of residents crowding Harita Nickel's affordable basic food (sembako) bazaar area.

Among the crowd was Wa Ati. The housewife's face beamed after successfully buying three grocery packages at once. For her, the initiative organized by Harita Nickel is like an oasis amidst the annual routine of rising food prices ahead of the fasting month.

"This is extremely helpful for us residents. We pray that the company's operations run smoothly," Wa Ati said gratefully. Now, she can breathe a sigh of relief as her family's kitchen supplies for Ramadan are well secured.

The enthusiasm of residents like Wa Ati is well-founded. A grocery package worth Rp300,000 could be taken home for just half the price, at Rp150,000. Each package contains essential food items: 5 kg of rice, 2 kg of wheat flour, 2 kg of sugar, 2 liters of cooking oil, and 1 can of condensed milk. Unsurprisingly, within just one hour of opening, hundreds of packages were immediately sold out as residents rushed to buy them.

Business Capital from Sales Proceeds

Interestingly, the afternoon's joy did not solely belong to the buyers securing discounted prices. Behind the committee's bazaar table, Maya, an administrator of the Az-Zahra Majlis Taklim, was equally excited.

The Az-Zahra Majlis Taklim is one of four local partners collaborating with Harita Nickel to organize this bazaar. Besides Az-Zahra, two other majlis taklims and the Soligi Village Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) group were involved in the event. All proceeds from the grocery package sales are not returned to the company; instead, they are fully granted to these partner groups to serve as their collective business capital.

"Of course, we are also very happy and grateful to the company for providing us with this blessing," Maya expressed with a smile.

Her group successfully sold out their allocated 120 grocery packages, pocketing Rp18 million in fresh funds. "The money we receive will be used for our joint business capital," she added.

Synergy Between the Company, Village Government, and Residents

The affordable bazaar, scheduled to run for four days from February 20 to 23, 2026, provides a total of 480 grocery packages. If all packages are sold out, the sales turnover from the four partners will reach Rp72 million—a significant figure to drive the village's micro-economy.

Harita Nickel's Community Relations Manager, Riyadi Supriadi, explained that the involvement of community elements is designed to make the program's benefits more sustainable. According to him, the affordable bazaar during Ramadan has been an annual routine in the villages surrounding the company's operational area.

"The purpose of this affordable bazaar is to help ease the residents' burden in meeting their basic needs. We involve local partners so that the sales proceeds can be used for collective business capital, thereby fostering the growth of local economic groups in Soligi," Riyadi stated.

This tangible support for food security and women's economic empowerment received full appreciation from the local village government. Soligi Village Head, Madaisi La Siriali, views the program as a clear manifestation of the company's attention to empowerment and economic strengthening.

"We hope that the synergy between the community, the village government, and the company can be continuously strengthened through activities that have a direct impact on the residents," Madaisi concluded.

The bazaar organized by Harita Nickel in Soligi Village does more than just provide affordable groceries for the community. Beyond that, the initiative nurtures the solemnity of fasting worship while sowing the seeds of economic independence for the residents living around the company's operational area

South Halmahera, February 18, 2026 – Harita Nickel continues to strengthen local human resource capacity through its vocational program, the Youth Skills Enhancement (PELITA) Batch IV. A total of 40 youths from Obi Island are participating in a certified Overhead Crane operator training as part of the company's efforts to build a workforce ready to meet the operational demands of the downstream nickel industry.

Harita Nickel's Community Development Manager, Broto Suwarso, stated that the PELITA program is designed to bridge the gap between industry needs and the potential of local youths who previously lacked specialized skills.

“The PELITA vocational initiative is a concrete manifestation of the company's commitment to enhancing local Human Resources (HR) capacity. This is our strategy to ensure that the community can be the masters of their own region, equipped with proven competencies,” Broto said.

As an integrated nickel mining and downstream company, Harita Nickel currently employs approximately 26,000 workers. Around 85 percent are Indonesian citizens, with about 50 percent hailing from North Maluku. The PELITA program serves as a key effort to continuously increase the involvement of local talent within the company's operational structure.

Over the course of three months, participants will undergo intensive training to operate Overhead Cranes. Furthermore, the program integrates mental, physical, and disciplinary development to instill a strong industrial work ethic in the participants.

“Our target is clear: to provide local youths with better career opportunities. It is proven that the majority of graduates from previous PELITA batches have been absorbed and are now working within the company's operational environment,” Broto added.

The direct impact of this program is felt by La Rehan, a PELITA Batch IV participant from Soligi Village. Previously working as a daily casual worker, he joined the selection process to seize the opportunity to learn new skills.

"I am thrilled to have been selected. This program provides an opportunity for us locals with minimal experience to acquire industrial skills. I hope this will serve as a stepping stone for my future career development," he expressed.

The PELITA program has run successfully across several cohorts. The first batch produced 14 Wheel Loader operators, followed by the second batch with 28 Overhead Crane operators who are currently employed at the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) processing facility of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF). Meanwhile, the third batch, which focused on Mandarin language proficiency, graduated 22 participants who are now entering their apprenticeship phase.

The consistent implementation of the PELITA program reflects Harita Nickel's approach to building an inclusive employment ecosystem on Obi Island. By strengthening local competencies, the company not only supports community empowerment but also solidifies a safe, adaptive, and long-term-oriented operational foundation.

PELITA Vocational Program Batch IV: Harita Nickel Prepares 40 Obi Island Youths as Certified Heavy Equipment Operators

Kawasi, December 21, 2025 – The New Settlement of Kawasi Village on Obi Island became the site for the dedication and inauguration of three facilities of the Maluku Protestant Church (GPM) on Sunday, 21 December 2025. The facilities include the Imanuel Church building, the pastor’s house, and a multipurpose hall. The event reflected strong collaboration between the church, Harita Nickel, the local government, and the community to strengthen congregational life and promote diversity in South Halmahera.

The Immanuel Church Building covers an area of 822 square meters. More than a place of worship, the church is expected to serve as a center for community development and social interaction, providing long-term benefits for the congregation and the people of Kawasi Village.

Vice Regent of South Halmahera, Helmi Umar Muchsin, expressed his appreciation to church leaders, the congregation, and Harita Nickel for their collaboration in developing the facilities. He emphasized that places of worship hold deeper meaning beyond physical structures.

“With the inauguration of Immanuel Church in Kawasi, we reaffirm that South Halmahera is a regency that upholds the values of tolerance and inclusivity. From places of worship like this, values of peace, mutual respect, and harmonious coexistence continue to grow and be maintained,” said Helmi.

He also expressed hope that Immanuel Church would function not only as a place of worship, but also as a space for social interaction and character building that positively impacts the surrounding community.

“On behalf of the Government of South Halmahera Regency, I congratulate the congregation on the inauguration of Immanuel Church. May the pastors, church leaders, and all members of the congregation continue to strengthen their faith and work together to build a harmonious South Halmahera,” he added.

Meanwhile, Vice General Secretary of the GPM Synod, Rev. M. Takaria, stated that the dedication and inauguration serve as an important moment for the congregation to continue growing amid today’s challenges. He highlighted the importance of unity, solidarity, and fellowship among church members, as well as the role of the church in supporting gospel ministry and community development, especially for the younger generation.

“This moment strengthens partnerships that support the congregation and promotes harmony across religious and ethnic groups as a foundation for peaceful social life on Obi Island,” said Rev. M. Takaria.

External Relations Manager of Harita Nickel, Apolinavis Mbata, explained that the inauguration of these facilities reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“This inauguration is part of our commitment to supporting the SDGs and reflects harmonious collaboration among multiple stakeholders on Obi Island. We hope these three facilities will be used optimally to support religious activities, social programs, and community development,” said Apolinavis.

He added that the development of the church complex aligns with Harita Nickel’s Community Development Program (PPM) and the company’s sustainability vision to grow and progress together with communities around its operational areas.

GPM Kawasi Church Complex Inaugurated by South Halmahera Vice Regent, Strengthening Harmony on Obi Island

Harita Nickel's commitment to empowering communities surrounding the mining area has once again been proven through the graduation of 22 participants of the third batch of the PELITA (Youth Skills Improvement) Vocational Program. This time, the program was focused on mastering the Mandarin language to meet the strategic needs of the nickel downstream industry.

In the graduation ceremony that was held on Thursday (27/11) in Harita Nickel’s site on Obi Island, the graduates officially obtained HSK 3 (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi level 3) equivalent competency after undergoing six months of intensive training, covering 112 sessions or the equivalent of 192 hours of learning.

Harita Nickel’s management presented a Mandarin language vocational certificate to one of the program’s outstanding graduates.

Harita Nickel’s Deputy Head of Technical Support, Agung Aribowo, affirms that this program was designed for the local communities to become more than just spectators amid the rapid growth of the nickel industry, but to become active participants.

"We understand that the success of downstreaming depends on strong human resources. These Mandarin vocational graduates are prepared to become vital communication bridges in a work environment that is integrated with international partners. This is a strategic added value for local people to enter the competitive global job market," said Agung.

The impact of this program was felt directly by Kasman La Jaani (18), a young man from Soligi Village. Facing economic challenges and difficult terrain to arrive at the language school, Kasman almost gave up halfway through. However, intensive assistance from the Community Development team of Harita Nickel managed to revive his spirit to study again, enabling him to become the second-best graduate.

“At the beginning, it was difficult because of the distance and weather; I felt like giving up. But the support from my mentors at Harita Nickel helped me get back on my feet. I believe that Mandarin language skills are the key to a brighter future for us, the children of Obi,” said Kasman optimistically.

The Head of the North Maluku Provincial Education Office for South Halmahera, Saimah Kasuba, expressed her deep appreciation for the program. She called it a significant breakthrough in regional vocational education.

“Ladies and gentlemen, you should take pride in the fact that the PELITA Mandarin vocational program at Harita Nickel is the first of its kind in South Halmahera. It is precisely this kind of collaboration that is needed to produce competent and competitive local human resources,” Saimah affirmed.

PELITA is part of Harita Nickel's Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program, which aims to improve local human resources through vocational education.

Prior to this third batch, the program has successfully transformed unskilled workers into certified skilled workers. A total of 14 graduates from the first batch are now working as wheel loader operators, while 28 graduates from the second batch are operating overhead cranes at a smelter owned by one of Harita Nickel's subsidiaries.

Harita Nickel's commitment to education does not stop at vocational training. In addition to PELITA, the company is also providing scholarships for 100 university students from Obi this year, building school infrastructure, and providing incentives for assistant teachers. All of this is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in creating quality education.

This educational ecosystem is built with the aim of producing local human resources who are not only technically competent but also highly competitive in responding to the increasingly competitive challenges of the global nickel downstream industry.

Harita Nickel Prepares Mandarin-Speaking Obi Youths for Global Industry Competition

A National Symposium entitled "Making Hasanuddin University a Center for Research and Study of Indonesian Nickel Downstreaming" was successfully held by the Hasanuddin University Engineering Alumni Association (IKATEK UNHAS) at the UNHAS Hotel & Convention on February 26, 2025. The event brought together academics, government officials, and nickel industry players to discuss how nickel downstreaming can continue to grow without neglecting environmental aspects.

As one of the leading nickel mining and downstreaming companies in Indonesia, Harita Nickel participated in the discussion. Harita Nickel's Deputy Department Head of HSE, Iwan Syahroni, was present as a speaker and presented the company's environmental management strategy against a backdrop of national nickel industry expansion. "We recognize that the mining industry is often associated with social and environmental issues,” said Iwan. “Therefore, Harita Nickel strives to implement responsible mining practices in accordance with ESG principles."

He explained that the company implements responsible mining practices with an integrated mining concept, prioritizing the management of processing residues and post-mining land reclamation. One initiative is the processing of nickel slag into infrastructure development materials, road construction materials, and artificial reef cubes to support marine ecosystems. To date, Harita Nickel has revegetated more than 200 hectares of post-mining land as part of its commitment to sustainability.

Harita Nickel continues to strengthen its responsible mining practices by participating in the IRMA independent audit process. As the first mining operation in Indonesia to commit to an IRMA independent assessment, Harita Nickel voluntarily adheres to this standard to ensure its operations are transparent and aligned with the strictest global mining principles.

In his presentation, Iwan also explained that, in 2024, the company completed its IRMA self-assessment and began the independent audit process led by SCS Global Services, an IRMA-approved auditing firm. This audit not only assesses environmental management but also includes support for its workforce and engagement with local communities.

"We not only want to comply with regulations, but also exceed standards to be more transparent in our operations," said Iwan. This commitment aligns with the company's efforts to become a pioneer in sustainable nickel mining in Indonesia, while paving the way for other mining industries to adopt higher global standards.

Harita Nickel Presents Environmental Management Strategy at UNHAS IKATEK National Symposium

Integrated nickel mining and processing technology company, Harita Nickel, is committed to promoting access to quality education for children on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. This effort aims to cultivate top-tier human resources in preparation for the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.

Harita Nickel's Head of External Relations, Latif Supriadi, said since its inception, the company has been committed to sustainable business practices by integrating responsible environmental and social governance. This commitment, he said, is outlined in the Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program which focuses on five aspects, including education, health, economy, infrastructure and socio-culture.

“Education as one of the five important pillars to build superior local resources, we strive to support access to quality education, especially for children in our operational areas. However, these kids are the future of Indonesia, who will carry on the development in their regions,” he said.

Latif further said that Harita Nickel's support in efforts to improve the quality of education for local communities is implemented by providing educational facilities and infrastructure. Most recently, he said, the company handed over computer laboratory equipment for SMA Tunas Muda and SMP Loji Permai Kawasi Village.

The equipment, which was handed over to mark the 2024 National Education Day, he said, complemented the company's support that had previously built school buildings for Kawasi Village residents, from pre-school to high school levels.

In addition to physical facilities, the company also implements various programs aimed at improving the quality of education. One of them is Harita Mengajar program through sending employees to teach Chinese, counseling on the dangers of drugs, socialization of Occupational Safety and Health (K3) to basic life support and fire prevention.

“To enrich their knowledge and boost their learning motivation, we also invite them to learn directly by visiting the company's integrated farming center. A few days ago, we invited elementary students to watch a movie about education in our movie theater,” Latif explained.

As Obi Island is away from urban access, some schools do not have enough teaching staff. To address this issue, the company supports incentives for auxiliary teachers to teach in a number of schools within its operational area.

“All of this is part of our commitment to support the government's program in producing excellent human resources, so that these local children can contribute to the development of their region,” he said.

The company's efforts to support improvement in the quality of education for local communities have been warmly welcomed.

Principal of Tunas Muda Kawasi High School, Obet Siar, expressed his appreciation for Harita Nickel's attention to school operations. According to him, the company's support is very important so that education quality on Obi Island can compete with other schools.

“Hopefully the company and the community can continue to work together to jointly improve the quality of education for our children,” he said.

For information, Tunas Muda High School and Loji Permai Junior High School have occupied new buildings that were constructed by Harita Nickel in the new settlement of Kawasi Village. With more equipped facilities, the students claimed to be more enthusiastic in learning. One of them expressed by Ikra Jouronga, 11th grade student of SMA Tunas Muda Kawasi Village.

“I'm happy, especially with the computer lab, so we can practice directly. Even though we are far from the city, we are not inferior to other schools out there,” he said. Welcoming Golden Indonesia 2045, Harita Nickel Promotes Quality Education for Children on Obi Island

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Nickel downstreaming has become a leading sector for North Maluku Province as the region with the highest economic growth rate in Indonesia in the last three years. Operating on Obi Island, South Halmahera, Harita Nickel, an integrated nickel mining and processing technology firm, has played a pivotal role in this achievement.

Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of North Maluku Province, Aidil Adha, highlighted the significant role of the nickel mining and processing industry in driving regional economic growth. He pointed out growth rates of 16.79% in 2021, 22.94% in 2022, and 20.49% in 2023. Additionally, the mining experienced the highest production growth at 49.07%, while exports took the lead in expenditures, comprising 28.67%. He stated this during a joint visit with BPS and Bank Indonesia (BI) to Harita Nickel's operational area.

Furthermore, Aidil highlighted Harita Nickel as a leading example of mining and downstream enterprises committed to sustainable business practices. From employing cutting-edge, eco-friendly production techniques to effectively managing social aspects, which have been proven to have a positive impact on the surrounding community.

Aidil was surprised that North Maluku's recent economic growth didn't involve Cobalt Sulphate (CoSO4), despite Harita Nickel's successful production of it in the latter half of 2023. With the introduction of this Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) derivative product, he expects even more growth for North Maluku's economy.

"We receive numerous inquiries about North Maluku Province's remarkable economic growth. People often question the data supporting such substantial progress. However, it seems this growth is set to continue, especially with the addition of another derivative product, Cobalt Sulfate, alongside Nickel Sulfate," he explained.

For information, Nickel Sulfate (NiSO4) and Cobalt Sulfate (CuSO4) are the two main components for making electric vehicle battery cathodes, which represent a newer, more environmentally friendly energy source.

Similarly, Hasiando Manik, Economist of Bank Indonesia South Sulawesi cited Harita Nickel as an ideal example of downstream practices benefiting both regional economic growth and local communities. He noted the company's ability to transform previously unused materials into valuable products as a significant asset for Harita Nickel.

"Harita Nickel has turned limonite, once considered low-value overburden, into valuable material for electric vehicle batteries. This aligns with good mining principles, specifically mineral conservation, and proves to be an efficient and profitable business strategy." he explained.

Contributions Outside the Mining Sector

Apart from visiting the smelter and refinery, the BI and BPS delegation also met with beneficiaries of the company's community development and empowerment program (PPM) on Obi Island. These include groups of farmers, fishermen, and MSMEs whohave received support from the company.

Despite its substantial contribution to regional economic growth, Aidil reminded that Harita Nickel could also help the government revive the agricultural and fisheries sectors, which local communities have started to neglect. He highlighted that people's welfare isn't solely determined by income but also by purchasing power, particularly concerning food commodities like rice, chilies, and tomatoes, which frequently experience price fluctuations leading to inflation.

The group visited a refinary plant that processes Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) intermediate products into Nickel Sulfate and Cobalt Sulfate as the main material for manufacturing electric vehicle battery cathodes.

"Although income may rise, increased demand for food may lead to higher prices as imports become necessary. However, I've noticed that Harita Nickel is diligently implementing empowerment programs in agriculture," he stated.

Tonny Gultom, Harita Nickel's Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), noted that their company, initially focused solely on mining, now operates a mineral processing industry aligned with the government's downstream policy. Heemphasized the substantial impact of this policy, which adds significant value to their operations.

"What we're witnessing today is the outcome of our efforts over the past five years. Initially, we only mined. Now, with down-streaming, our operational plans are more extensive and complex, offering greater added value to local and regional communities," he elaborated.

Harita Nickel is transforming it into the Obi Industrial Area, supported by obtained permits. Not only will production capacity increase, but they'll also push production further downstream. For instance, the ferronickel produced by the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) smelters will be processed into stainless steel in the future. On the environmental front, we plan to shift electricity sources from fossil fuels to renewable energy through Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant (Solar PV) in stages, starting this year. Wellness Beyond Work: Harita Nickel's Free Health Check-ups for National OHS Month

Ternate (ANTARA) - The sustainable integrated mining and downstream company, PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL) or Harita Nickel, conducted free health check-ups and medical treatment in Wayaloar Village, Obi Island District, South Halmahera Regency, Maluku, as a commitment to reduce stunting.

Community Development Superintendent of Harita Nickel, Panji Setyadi, as contacted on Sunday (17/12), stated that the free health check-ups and medical treatment activities are part of Harita Nickel's Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM) to support the government's efforts in addressing stunting issues.

"At this event, residents received comprehensive health screenings and treatment. We also invited specialists in obstetrics and pediatrics to support the government's program to reduce stunting rates," said Panji.

In addition to health screenings, the series of activities for National Health Day 2023 also included competitions to promote the healthy living movement. These included a competition to prepare supplementary food for infants, creative gymnastics, and a health walk.

Meanwhile, Dr. Azhar Kurniawan, a pediatric specialist from Labuha Regional General Hospital, explained that stunting is a disruption in the growth and development of children due to chronic nutritional deficiencies. To prevent it, attention must be paid to the nutritional needs of children during pregnancy.

"Stunting doesn't happen in isolation. To prevent it, we need to focus not only on the child but also on the parents. Because a mother with inadequate nutrition will give birth to a stunted child," he explained.

He also explained that stunting can be corrected before a child reaches the age of two. In addition, the focus should be on optimizing nutrition for the child. Therefore, he emphasized the need to carefully consider a child's nutritional needs from pregnancy to age two.

Regarding the still high prevalence of stunting in South Halmahera Regency, he noted that the local government has undertaken various efforts to reduce the incidence of stunting. He therefore expressed his appreciation for Harita Nickel's initiative to support the government in addressing the issue of stunting, particularly on Obi Island.

"The mass health screening and treatment activities are very helpful in identifying which villages are potentially at risk of stunting. We will then collect and follow up the data to determine if treatment can be provided here or if further follow-up at the hospital is needed," he explained.

The free screening and treatment, organized by Harita Nickel in collaboration with the South Halmahera Regency Health Department and local community health centers, was attended by approximately 400 residents from various villages within the company's operating area in South Obi District. According to the records of the medical team on site, the most common health concerns of the residents included gout, cholesterol problems, and high blood pressure.

Meanwhile, a child from Gambaru village who was suspected of suffering from malnutrition, based on observations at the specialist clinic, has received medical attention from the health team. Siti Waudi, the mother, hopes that her child's health will continue to improve.

"My child's condition has improved compared to two months ago; hopefully it will continue to improve," she said, expressing her gratitude to the company for helping with her child's treatment.

Earlier, the company, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and local community health centers, conducted stunting management training for health cadres in every village in South Obi District. In addition to South Obi, the company will organize similar activities in Obi District next week as part of the Obi Zero Stunting program.
