Harita Nickel's Department Head of Community Affairs, Latif Supriadi said Ramadan Safari activities are part of the Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program that has been held regularly by the company every year.
"Through this Ramadan Safari, we stay in touch and at the same time want to share happiness with the community, especially Muslims who are fasting Ramadan and will soon celebrate Eid al-Fitr," he explained.
From this particular activity, he hopes to strengthen the company's relationship and togetherness with the community, which has been harmonious so far.
In addition to Obi Island, Harita Nickel in collaboration with a number of agencies distributed more than 3 thousand Eid packages in Ternate City and Labuha, North Maluku.
Several leaders appreciated Harita Nickel, they admitted that the activities initiated by the company had a positive impact on the community. In addition to being a gathering place, it is also very helpful, especially for the poor.
"Harita's presence on Obi Island has brought a lot of positive impacts. We thank you very much for the company's cooperation that has been supporting government programs," said Obi Sub-District Head, La Ali La Jarahiya.
Meanwhile, the pastor of Eben Haezer Church in Wayaloar Village, Jei Tomas Siwabessy, said that the Ramadan Safari and iftar held by the company is a means to strengthen the relationship between religious adherents.

Donating Orphans and Dhuafa, Christian Leaders in Obi: Harita Nickel's Ramadan Safari as Interfaith Bonding

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Harita Nickel continues to support economic growth for the people of Obi Island. Here, this nickel mining and downstream processing company has partnered with several farmer groups to supply local food for its workforce of over 20,000 people. This partnership was originally set up to meet the food needs of company employees.
In addition to collaborating to meet employee food needs, Harita Nickel also assists with the harvest distribution among three villages. So far, three farmer groups have become suppliers.
These three groups are members of the Anisa Jaya Joint Business Group (KSU), comprising 25 members; the Ora et Labora Joint Business Group (KUB), with 15 members; and the remaining members come from the Akelamo Jaya Farmers Group. In total, there are 54 suppliers spread throughout Kawasi Village, where the company operates, and Laiwui District.
In Laiwui District, the company has mentored 10 horticultural farmer groups, one duck farming group, and one fishing group. Similarly, in Kawasi Village, a fishermen's group has been assisted, in addition to the aforementioned farmers' group.
Nur Eneng Dahmad, a member of the farming group that has been supplying Harita Nickel's food needs since 2016, said that this collaboration has yielded positive results for the local economy, especially for the women who are members of the farming group.
"Many things have changed in our daily lives, especially the economy, through this collaboration. It not only provides economic benefits for individuals, but also for the women in the farming group," Eneng said when contacted by the Liputan6.com team on Friday (November 25, 2022).
Operating in Various Sectors
In addition to agriculture, suppliers collaborating with Harita Nickel operate in a range of other sectors and have, for the most part, achieved legal registration. Most importantly, all of these supplier groups are made up local residents and farmers.
The commodities supplied by these groups include vegetables, fruit, chicken, beef, fish, and dry kitchen ingredients. These local ingredients are distributed to the company through vendors or third parties who manage employee meal needs. Naturally, these vendors also conduct product quality checks.
Starting next year (2023), the focus will not be solely on horticulture but will expand into other areas. Eneng stated that the Akelomo Jaya Farmers Group will expand into other raw materials, such as ice block production.
"Early next year, we will launch a new business: ice block production. We chose ice blocks because a number of people in Obi are fishermen. So we want to help these fishermen maintain the freshness of their catch by supplying ice blocks," she said.
Incidentally, total turnover generated by the farmers’ groups is impressive. The total turnover from all suppliers, when combined, reaches IDR 8 billion per month.

Harita Nickel Assists the Obi Island Farmers Group
Thanks to the collaboration between the company and the farmer groups on Obi Island, farmers' market share has significantly expanded. These groups have also benefitted from company support in the form of agricultural education, through the provision of assistance to improve product quality, as well as distribution management.
Furthermore, the company assisted the farmer groups with post-harvest handling, such as ensuring fish are stored in ice-filled containers and kept clean, vegetables and fruit must be sorted to ensure quality, and so on.
Eneng also explained that when the farmer groups encounter challenges, such as unsatisfactory harvests resulting from crop failure due to the rainy season, the company continued to provide support and education to the farmers.
"When our yields declined and crops failed due to the rainy season, the company continued to provide assistance and education to us, including selecting suitable seeds, maintaining soil nutrients, and helping us find new distribution channels," she said.
Challenges faced by the farmers extend beyond crop failures, and include limited production or land availability, as well as maritime transportation issues, which can often impact the supply of vegetables and fruit. These factors can also affect the company's ability to meet its employee needs.
To overcome these obstacles, Eneng hopes the company can provide equitable agricultural education for farmer groups on Obi Island.
"We hope that education through the company's mentoring will be more evenly distributed among farmer groups on Obi Island," she said.
"We also hope the company can support the new business (ice blocks) that will launch in early 2023 and have a positive impact on farmer groups and fishermen on Obi Island," she concluded.

Cooperation Between Farmer Groups and Harita Nickel on Obi Island

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - When diving in the waters surrounding Obi Island, Risky has often encountered various species of sharks and turtles. “Environmental management is Harita Nickel’s strongest commitment,” he says. “We never give up in carrying out environmental management on Obi Island, especially considering the many baseless accusations out there.”
A young Indonesian with character is one who can innovate, think creatively, be independent, adapt, and compete confidently in a globalized world. More than that, a progressive young Indonesian is someone who can bring positive impact to society across all sectors.
With regard to Indonesia’s younger generation, Harita Nickel — a nickel mining and downstream processing company operating on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku — continues to prioritize local workers to meet its workforce needs.
Two young local workers who play an active role in the company are Yufita Tuhuteru (27) and Risky Apriyanto Gailea (26). Both are millennials from the surrounding region who joined Harita Nickel and say they are grateful to build their careers close to home.
“Working at Harita Nickel is very enjoyable because it's close to my home village,” said Yufita, who is from Soligi Village in South Halmahera. Soligi can be reached by a fast boat in about 45 minutes from Harita Nickel’s mining operations in Kawasi Village.
Yufita has a Batchelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering (BSc) from the Indonesian Muslim University and a Master’s in Metallurgical Engineering (MSc) from Gadjah Mada University. In light of her academic background, she was placed in the production division when she first joined Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), one of the companies under Harita Nickel.
She now works in an oversight capacity, monitoring the leftover materials from the High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) processing of limonite nickel ore ( “dry tail”), overseeing operations at the wastewater treatment plant (IPAL), and supervising the construction of levees and sluice gates.
“Even though I am now working in a different area, this has actually become an important motivation for the development of my career going forward,” she said.
Another young millennial actively working at the Obi site is Risky Apriyanto Gailea. He joined 9 months ago [at the time of writing] and currently plays a key role in marine environmental monitoring, serving as the Lead for Monitoring, Sampling, and Environmental Management at Halmahera Jaya Feronikel, one of Harita Nickel’s ferronickel smelters.
A graduate of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Khairun University, Ternate, Risky says that working at Harita Nickel is not only a way to help his family recover financially after the COVID-19 pandemic – it also allows him to help protect the marine environment he calls home, while continuing his hobby of diving.

“I can learn a lot about the environment here,” says Risky. “It matches my field of study, and I can also learn about coastal ecosystems.”

Challenges of Working at Harita Nickel
It is not just businesses that must face challenges and find ways to overcome them. Employees too must also be ready to address and overcome the obstacles in their path.
For Risky, who holds a PADI Divemaster certification, the responsibility of monitoring the marine environment and ensuring proper waste management is not easy. Since joining Harita Nickel, he has gained significant new knowledge through training and capacity building provided by the company — while still being able to apply his diving skills.
The 1996-born native of Falabisahaya shared that, when he first applied, his skills were not fully developed. But he believed that Harita Nickel would provide space for growth, aligned with the company’s commitment to maintaining environmental sustainability amid the rapid expansion of nickel mining and downstream processing on Obi Island.
“When I first joined Harita Nickel, I didn’t yet have strong skills,” Risky told the Liputan6 team, Friday (14/10/2022).”But during the first three months, I received guidance, training, and certification. Now I am one of the frontliners in the company for monitoring the marine environment around Obi,” he added.
For him, adapting through training and development programs has been a challenge he has willingly embraced. He also emphasized that environmental management is the company’s top priority.
“Environmental management is the company’s biggest commitment. We do not give up in carrying out environmental management, especially considering the many baseless accusations out there,” he said firmly.
Regarding sustainable environmental practices, Risky noted that Harita Nickel applies responsible and well-regulated operational standards. Environmental monitoring and control are carried out according to government regulations, with precautionary principles taken into account.
“As someone who sees conditions in the field every day, I can confirm that the allegations of pollution on Obi Island are not true. The waters of Obi are fine and meet government quality standards,” Risky stated. According to him, this condition is also supported by valid data from routine monitoring conducted by the company.

Local Workers from Obi Island
Over 13 years of building and operating nickel processing facilities and mining operations on Obi Island, Harita Nickel has consistently prioritized local workers from North Maluku, especially Obi Island.
“Currently, we have more than 11,000 employees, and 65% of them are from North Maluku,” explains Stevi Thomas, Head of External Relations at Harita Nickel. “This is in addition to around 6,500 contractor workers,” he added, before noting that these workers are involved in mining activities and operations across three nickel processing facilities.

Seeing the scale of employment opportunities, Yufita emphasized that opportunities for young people in North Maluku are wide open.
“I always tell friends in North Maluku, we are local people but we need the right mindset and awareness to recognize opportunities. We have huge job opportunities here in Obi. I want to encourage young people from this region to be at the forefront,” she said.
However, she also acknowledged that many young people from Obi still lack technical skills.
“Local youth from Obi Island often have limited educational backgrounds, especially in chemical, civil, or metallurgical engineering. I have shared with both local youth associations and the company management the importance of providing training paths for non-skilled youth so they can gain skills,” Yufita explained.
“Young people must be productive, innovative, and able to compete positively in any work environment,” she said.
Risky agreed. Having dived in Obi’s waters at depths of up to 20 meters, he expressed his gratitude that Harita Nickel prioritizes local workers.
“Harita Nickel has several business units. Many of the workers are from the surrounding villages. I am very grateful because the company prioritizes local workers,” he said — recalling his encounters with sharks and turtles while monitoring the waters near the company’s operations.
This commitment is also supported by the North Maluku Provincial Manpower Office.
“Harita Nickel always involves local workers from the surrounding mining areas in South Halmahera through proper recruitment and verification steps,” said Nurlaila Nuhammad, Head of the North Maluku Manpower Office.

Work Challenges at Harita Nickel According to Millennials on Obi Island

To help boost the local economy in Soligi Village, South Obi District, South Halmahera—an area within Harita Nickel’s operational scope on Obi Island—the company has encouraged residents to cultivate soybeans and process them into tofu and tempeh for consumption by company employees.
According to Latif Supriadi, Head of Community Affairs at Harita Nickel, this soybean farming and processing program will position Soligi Village as the first upstream-to-downstream, soybean-based food production center in South Halmahera. The main market for these processed products is the catering companies serving Harita Nickel, namely PT GDSK and PT Aden.
He explained that Harita Nickel first began supporting the first soybean cultivation across two hectares of land on July 21, 2022. Then, on September 17, 2022, the Rumah Usaha Tangguh Ekonomi (RUTE) economic empowerment center was inaugurated together with the Soligi village government. The program initially involved 14 women from three hamlets. The goal was that, once production capacity increased, more residents would be able to join, according to the RUTE operating mechanism.
Through RUTE, the women process the soybeans into tofu and tempeh, with a target output of 80,000 pieces per month to meet Harita Nickel employees’ consumption needs. Every month, catering vendors PT GDSK and PT Aden require approximately 80,000 pieces of tofu and tempeh. “With that demand, RUTE has the potential to generate a total monthly turnover of up to IDR 330 million,” Latif explained in a statement on Tuesday (9/202022).
Latif added that Harita Nickel’s support for the Soligi community development and empowerment (PPM) program includes institutional formation and strengthening, provision of tofu and tempeh production equipment, technical training, production management, market access support, and demonstration plots for soybean cultivation.
“RUTE is focused on optimizing soybean-based products, ranging from tofu and tempeh to soy milk. This forms part of Harita Nickel’s One Village One Product (OVOP) strategy,” he continued.
Benefits for Soligi Village
“Harita Nickel will continue to fully support the community through well-targeted PPM programs. In the case of RUTE in Soligi, assistance includes skills development and ongoing guidance from production through to marketing,” added Stevi Thomas, Head of External Relations at Harita Nickel.
Rusman Baharudin, RUTE Coordinator, hopes the program will bring meaningful improvements to village livelihoods and continue to benefit the community in the long term.
“Through this program, the community has gained many positive things, especially in terms of skills and entrepreneurship,” Rusman said.
Meanwhile, Badri Bakhtiar, a representative of PT GDSK, noted that tofu and tempeh for catering operations are currently sourced from outside Obi Island, resulting in reduced freshness and quality by the time they arrive on site.
“We hope to begin collaborating with RUTE as soon as possible, and that the RUTE group will be able to supply high-quality tofu and tempeh,” Bakhtiar said. His statement was echoed by Ronny, representing the other catering vendor, PT Aden.

To Boost the Economy of Soligi Village, Harita Nickel Encourages Residents to Plant and Process Soybeans

Harita Nickel supports the improvement of community services on Obi Island by fully financing the construction of the Obi Subdistrict office building in Laiwui, Obi Island, South Halmahera (Halsel), North Maluku. The first milestone ceremony for the construction of the office building covering an area of 543 square meters was carried out by the President Director of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada, Donald J. Hermanus together with the Regent of South Halmahera, Usman Sidik, and the Chairman of the DPRD South Halmahera, Muhlis Jafar, in Laiwui, Obi Island, South Halmahera, Thursday ( 11/8).
The first milestone ceremony was also attended by elements of the South Halmahera Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda) and several members of the DPRD South Halmahera. The construction of the office, which is targeted for completion in December 2022, is able to empower residents by absorbing around 50 local workers and is carried out by local contractors with supervision from the South Halmahera Perkim Office.
Donald J. Hermanus stated that the construction of the Obi Subdistrict office which was fully funded by Harita Nickel was a form of Harita Nickel's support for the South Halmahera Regional Government to improve services to the community.

"We hope that with the adequate infrastructure, it will be able to support the performance of the Obi District government in terms of administrative services to the people on Obi Island so that it will be even better," said Donald.

Donald added, that in addition to being a center for administrative services for the community, the Obi District office is also expected to become a center for community development and empowerment (PPM). "Hopefully with the presence of this new office, various innovations will be born to bring the people in Obi District to more prosperous," said Donald.

On that occasion, Donald also expressed his gratitude to the Regent of South Halmahera and his staff who continue to build synergy with Harita Nickel. "We are proud to be able to participate in building South Halmahera Regency, especially Obi Island. Hopefully, our joint efforts can realize Saruma Earth that is full of happiness and prosperity," said Donald.

Donald emphasized that Harita Nickel will always be committed to building good relations with all stakeholders, both in South Halmahera and North Maluku. "Especially in South Halmahera Regency, Harita Nickel will also provide marine ambulance assistance for Obi General Hospital, garbage trucks, normalization of the Jikotamo River, and many other economic development programs," said Donald.
Meanwhile, the Regent of South Halmahera, Usman Sidik, expressed his high appreciation to Harita Nickel for its contribution by fully financing the construction of the Obi District office building. According to Usman, with a very small Regional Original Income (PAD), the assistance for the construction of the Obi Subdistrict office building means a lot to the South Halmahera Regional Government.

“I am very grateful to Harita Nickel who has helped reduce the burden on the South Halmahera Regional Government. And this is of immense help to us. Harita is extraordinary," said Usman.

Usman also invited the residents of Obi Island to take care of what Harita had donated. "Let's take care of what Harita has donated. It's been amazing. Even if this doesn't happen, it's okay, because Harita's obligations to the country have been fulfilled. But because of the good relationship between the South Halmahera Government and Harita, we are grateful that Harita has given great attention to the community," said Usman.
