Harita Nickel partnered with the North Maluku Provincial Language Office to host a Technical Guidance for future Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers instructors. This activity is part of the <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/sustainability/human-rights/our-employee" target="_blank">human resource</a> development program, which was held to equip translators with Indonesian language learning knowledge for Foreign Workers (TKA).
A total of 25 participants attended the training on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at <a href="https://hpalnickel.com/" target="_blank">PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPAL)</a>&nbsp;Living Quarter. These included translators and administrative staff who work with foreign workers in various business units.&nbsp;
Junaidi Arief, HR&GA Superintendent of PT HPAL, emphasized that the Bimtek is crucial for introducing Indonesian language and culture to foreign workers at the Obi site so that they can easily pick up the language through effective teaching methods.
"The standardization and rules of Indonesian language teaching that have been delivered by the North Maluku Language Office can make it easier for foreign workers at the Obi site to understand Indonesian," he said.
Furthermore, Junaidi said all foreign workers have been introduced to Indonesian culture through induction given when they first arrived at the Obi site. For example, they were told about what they could and could not do in Indonesia. With the introduction of culture and language teaching, he said, cultural acculturation and synergy between foreign workers and migrant workers can be implemented in work.
Meanwhile, Head of the North Maluku Provincial Language Office, Dr Arie Andrasyah Isa, S.S, M.Hum said BIPA is a priority program from the government to internationalize Indonesian. According to him, Harita Nickel as a company that employs foreign workers needs to provide Indonesian language lessons to facilitate their communication in carrying out their work.&nbsp;
"In this Bimtek, translators and prospective teachers are equipped with various materials on how effective teaching techniques and methods for Foreign Workers," he said, while giving appreciation to Harita Nickel for supporting the BIPA program. [IC]

Harita Nickel organizes BIPA instructor training to advance the internationalization of Indonesian language

The official conclusion of the Harita Nickel 2023 Olympics took place during the Closing Ceremony held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, coinciding with the commemoration of the Youth Pledge Day. The Closing Ceremony, which was presented in a music concert at the Nirwana Football Field of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (PT TBP), marked the end of the entire series of competitions that had been taking place since September.&nbsp;
Younsel Evand Roos, Operational Director of PT TBP, expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported the successful organization of the Harita Nickel 2023 Olympics. He mentioned that the event successfully strengthened the bond between the business units as a unified part of the Harita Nickel family.

"This Olympics proves that although we come from different business units, we are still one Harita. Wherever we are, we always strive to contribute our best with different stories for Harita. This spirit is reflected in the slogan 'One Harita, One Story,'" he said.&nbsp;
In this inaugural Olympics, PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) emerged as the overall champion with a total score of 34 points, closely followed by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) with 32 points. Meanwhile, PT TBP and PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP) had to settle for third and fourth place.

Catur Prasetyo, one of the winners of the videography competition, expressed his admiration for the organization of the Harita Nickel 2023 Olympics. He noted that the event not only served as a platform to strengthen camaraderie among employees but also succeeded in increasing love for the company.&nbsp;
"In addition to strengthening communication among employees, this event also strengthens the love and pride for the company," he said.&nbsp;
Rexi Mappadang, the winner of the Harita Idol competition, echoed similar sentiments. The golden-voiced Harita member said the Olympics successfully united employees from all business units, including local and international workers.
"This activity demonstrates the company's attention to developing employees' potential in sports and the arts. I have made many new friends and feel closer to colleagues throughout the company," he said.

The spirit of togetherness reflected in the slogan "One Harita, One Story" resonated once again at the closing concert of the Olympics. The expressions of joy and love overflowed as guest star Fresly Nikijuluw took the stage. At least 1500 Harita members immersed themselves in the familiar melodies. It turned out that the enthusiasm of Harita members for the entire Olympics extended to the company's leadership.
Younsel Evand Roos, representing the Board of Directors that evening, posed a question. "What do you think about having the Olympics again next year and making it an annual event?" he asked from the stage, immediately receiving a resounding "Agreed!" followed by cheers and roars from thousands of Harita members listening below the stage. Euphoria of Harita Nickel 2023 Olympic Closing Concert

Communication skills are essential in every job. To improve these skills, Harita Nickel's Corporate Communications Department organized a training session on public speaking and digital marketing. The event was held on September 16 and 17, 2023 at Room 305, Main Office of PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF).
Over the course of two days, 30 participants from various departments across all business units learned the techniques of public speaking and delivering engaging presentations. The training, conducted by communications and media professionals from Tempo Komunitas, was both engaging and interactive. Participants were not only taught theory but were also involved in practical exercises. The learning environment was made fun with the inclusion of games and door prizes.
After attending the training, participants expressed that they had gained significant new knowledge. Ferrinda, one of a participant from the production department of PT HJF, stated that the knowledge gained from the training was directly applicable to their work. After the training, they felt more confident when communicating with colleagues and even when speaking in front of a large audience. In addition to acquiring new knowledge, the participants also expressed their pleasure in attending the training on their day off.&nbsp;
Susanty Feronica Zees, a participant from the Processing Plant Department of PT MSP, felt that the time she sacrificed for rest was well worth it because she had the opportunity to learn directly from experienced professionals. What left a lasting impression on her was the sense of camaraderie throughout the training, which fostered a sense of belonging within the "Big Harita Nickel family".

Improving Communication Skills Harita's Employee, Corporate Communications Department Holds Public Speaking Training

After graduating from the mining major, Irfan Hayatudin briefly worked as an accounting assistant at a palm oil company. It wasn't the job he wanted, but Irfan stuck with it. He did it because he didn't want to disappoint his parents. They had struggled to put their child through college, only to see him graduate and remain unemployed. So even though it wasn't what he had hoped for, working was a non-negotiable option.
After seven months of working outside his field, news came from the head of the Mining Engineering program at Halmahera Polytechnic. A lecturer from his alma mater told him that a nickel smelter on Obi Island was opening a management trainee program.
Irfan didn't miss the opportunity. In November 2015, he participated in the three-month management trainee selection process at PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP). Out of 500 participants, 200 were deemed successful and given the opportunity to spend three months training in China.
The opportunity to study in China broadened Irfan's horizons in the smelting industry. He was proud to have gained a wealth of knowledge during his training program there. "It was an unforgettable experience to set foot in China and learn about the smelting technology used there," he said.
Three months passed, and Irfan returned home to fulfill a two-year commitment to work at MSP as a Control Room Staff. His duties included monitoring all the operating equipment and controlling the temperature and pressure of each unit in use.
Working in a company with limited time off, Irfan often filled his free time by being active on social media. His TikTok account now has 202,000 followers, and much of his content has gone viral, seen by millions of people. Yes, social media became a space to fill his "loneliness" of working in the smelting industry with a roster system, far away from his family and even his girlfriend!
Thanks to his popularity on social media, Irfan was selected as one of the participants in the Extra Miles Day organized by the Corporate Communications Department. Now he no longer feels lonely as he has made many acquaintances from different departments and even other business units. He is proud to have had the opportunity to visit all of Harita Nickel's operations, from upstream to downstream. He shared this experience on social media, packaged in his characteristic humorous yet positive style.
Reflecting on his life's journey, Irfan paused on the words of a much admired figure. It was Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, who once said, "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward."
"Every point we pass through in life, even if it's not pleasant, is not without reason. The key is to keep striving to be better by learning and working hard, and to have a positive outlook on whatever destiny God gives us," he concluded.

​Irfan Hayatudin: Once Lost and Lonely, Now Finds His Dream

Persistent, intelligent, and never give up. These three traits seem fitting to describe the character of Yufita Tuhuteru. As an Analyst at the Technology Department of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), she has proven that local residents on Obi Island can achieve higher education and pursue a professional career in their hometown. 
Yufita began her career journey at Harita Nickel by joining PT HPL through the Management Trainee program. It is a company program designed to identify and groom new talents for future managerial positions.

The 28-year-old woman from Soligi Village, a village within the operational circle of Harita Nickel on Obi Island, was initially assigned to the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). Due to her hard work and dedication, she was promoted to the position of WWTP Foreman after just one year. One of her responsibilities is to supervise the residue from the processing and refining of nickel using High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) technology, specifically dry tail.

From being a WWTP Foreman, Yufita now holds the position of Analyst in the Technology Department. Her daily tasks involve analyzing production samples to ensure the quality of the resulting products.

Yufita proudly expresses her satisfaction in being a part of Harita Nickel. Here, she can apply the knowledge she gained during her studies in Chemical Engineering at the Universitas Muslim Indonesia for her bachelor's degree (S1) and the same field for her master's degree (S2) at Universitas Gadjah Mada. Moreover, as a local resident, she can contribute to the development of her region.

"It's a personal pride to contribute to Harita Nickel, the first company that produces raw materials for electric vehicle batteries in Indonesia. Considering the many new technologies used here, such as the HPAL process and nickel sulfate processing, there is certainly a lot to learn," she says proudly.

Yufita has a big dream of promoting better access to quality education for the people of Obi Island. She also hopes that the youth in her region have a strong desire to learn so that they can excel academically and professionally.

In her opinion, career opportunities for local youth in Obi Island, and generally in North Maluku as one of the regions with the largest nickel reserves in Indonesia, are widely open. Moreover, the company she works for prioritizes hiring local residents. Out of more than 13,000 workers on-site, over 50 percent come from North Maluku.

However, this avid reader of journals during her spare time also acknowledges that the youth in North Maluku still lack skills.

"The youth in Obi Island, especially in fields like chemical engineering, civil engineering, or metallurgical engineering, have very limited education and skills. I have conveyed this to local community groups and also to the company management, urging them to provide opportunities for non-skilled youth in North Maluku. They should be given training to develop their skills," she explains.

Yufita has proven that limitations should not hinder someone from achieving their goals. Despite being born in one of the Least Developed, Frontline, and Outermost (3T) regions in North Maluku, she managed to attain higher education up to the master's level and apply her knowledge by pursuing a career in the largest electric vehicle battery material-producing company in Indonesia, which operates adjacent to her hometown.

"Young people must be productive, innovative, and capable of competing positively in every job we undertake," she concludes.

Yufita Tuhuteru: Achieving Dreams Amidst the Glitter of Mining in Her Hometown

ONE NIGHT, a fire broke out in Kawasi Village, South Halmahera, North Maluku. Getting this news, Harita Nickel's management immediately sent a rescue aid. A total of 3 firefighting units and 2 units of water trucks along with the Emergency Response Team (ERT) crew went to the fire location. 
Erich Marvin Rizal Mongdong, ERT Supervisor of PT Hamahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), said fire in Kawasi Village was one of the toughest cases ever handled. This was because crowds of panicked residents had made it difficult for the ERT crew to reach the location.&nbsp; 
"[We] can't blame them, they instinctively wanted to help. If it was in a company environment, it would be easier to manage because employees and workers are already trained, knowing what to do," said Erich, recalling the disastrous event that happened on October 23, 2022.
 
Not only in the company environment, said Erich, ERT Harita Nickel is also responsive to emergency events around its nickel mining and downstream operations in Obi Island.

ERICH MONGDONG joined Harita Nickel in June 2021. His position as ERT Supervisor at PT HPL, Harita Nickel's business unit producing the first electric vehicle battery material in Indonesia. This position is linear with his previous experience in one of mining companies in Papua.
 
Despite his experience, Erich did not face any obstacles. At that time he did not have members who had received emergency response training. ERT's structure had not yet been established. This role was previously handled by Safety team under the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) division. 
But that situation did not discourage Erich. Instead of considering it an obstacle, the absence of an ERT structure actually challenged him. Assisted by Safety personnel, he slowly formed a team. Indeed, it was not an easy process. 
"People think that we are firefighters. But it's bigger than that, because we are also required to rescue at sea, at heights and other emergency situations," Erich explains.
 
Erich understands people's reluctance to join ERT because they don't understand what his team actually does. He continues to look for ways to provide explanations in a more understandable way.
 
"I told them that ERT is a combination of firefighting and Basarnas put together," he continued, but he got the same result. None of the 17 daily casual workers (THL) who had been offered, wanted to join. 
"Then we made a demonstration simulation exercise. I asked permission for our safety team to become guinea pigs. Only then did they understand what the ERT does. People started to want to join," he said, feeling relieved.
 
Two years on, PT HPL's ERT now has 18 trained personnel on 24-hour standby. The team is also strengthened by 60 volunteers from across departments. These volunteers undergo regular training every month. Whenever needed, they are ready to join the ERT crew in the field.
 
"What we train in ERT, they also get, the same knowledge. Starting from fire training, altitude, extrication rescue, water rescue, medical," Erich explained.
 
Thanks to Erich and his team's dedication and hard work, ERT, which was once unknown to many, is now well known. Erich's office at PT HPL's Office 911 is busy serving emergency calls every day. Not only work accidents, but also other emergency calls such as when an employee is sick. Even outside the company area, such as during last year's fire in Kawasi.

BEING an ERT Supervisor, Erich has a huge responsibility. He is required to coordinate his team members to work cohesively, carefully and with safety in mind. This is important to ensure both victim and crew are safe during rescue operations.
 
"I pay attention to every piece of equipment. If I see a member not wearing gloves, not wearing shoes, I will warn them. A supervisor must be able to care for his crew, pay attention to the smallest things," explained Erich.
 
Apart from safety, every personnel is also required to be always prepared. On the other hand, it is undeniable that everyone's work spirit experiences ups and downs. To foster and maintain his crew's morale, Erich instills in them that doing work is not solely for material purposes, but also based on human values.
 
"No matter how much money we have, it will run out. But if we want to seek rewards for our provision that will never run out, this is the place. Our profession is a humanitarian mission, we help people," said Erich, encouraging his members.
 
Erich's responsibility and dedication to his work was born out of a long process. Once, the 33-year-old Papua-born man had an experience that has changed his attitude to life today.
 
It happened when he was living in Yogyakarta a few years ago. It was in 2006, when there was a 5.9 SR earthquake in Yogyakarta. Erich, who was a member of a nature lovers group in his high school, was asked to volunteer helping medical workers who were overwhelmed with the victims. He remembers that event like apocalypse. It was chaotic; there were victims everywhere, crying and screaming from every direction. 
He was asked by a medical officer to look after a grandmother who was a victim of the earthquake with a severe injury to her eye. 
"All I remember is that I was asked to look after the grandmother, to talk to her, and to make sure she didn't fall asleep," Erich says, trying to recall his memories.
 
Erich tried to keep the victim conscious. He did as much as he could, but fate decided otherwise. The grandmother died on his lap. This experience was a great blow to him, who was still a teenager at that time. He was haunted by guilt for days because he thought that he had failed to help the victim.
 
" I was the most indifferent person ever. What's important is that my life is safe, that's enough. That experience became a trigger for me to care more about others, about my environment," Erich said.
 
Since then, he has been actively involved in social activities. He actualized it through nature lovers' activities at his school. Likewise, when he continued his studies at Pelita Bangsa University in Yogyakarta, majoring in Human Resource Management, his hangout was not far from the nature lovers community.
 
Despite having made significant progress, Erich still has big dreams. He hopes that ERT can focus more on countermeasures in the future. Potential accidents should be mitigated first, so that early prevention efforts can be made. 
" It's called the Emergency Preparedness and Response Team. Before responding, it has been mitigated first. If possible, there should be no calls. This is what we have slowly started to do," said Erich, optimistically. 
Erich also hopes that safety-first attitude and care for others will become a culture for every employee in all Harita Nickel business units.

Erich Mongdong: Dedicating His Job to Serve Humanity

December has arrived. Before you know it, 2022 is already nearing its end. This month, Christmas and New Year's Eve are two of the calendar’s most eagerly awaited occasions. For Harita employees living in urban areas, and also the thousands more working at the Obi site in South Halmahera, North Maluku, this is a time for enthusiastic celebration.<o:p></o:p>
Each Harita Nickel business unit celebrates Christmas with services open to all Christians in the mining area. Given that Harita Nickel employees come from diverse ethnic and tribal backgrounds, the Christmas services also include entertainment in the form of traditional North Maluku dances as a way to celebrate the local culture.<o:p></o:p>

On New Year's Eve, each Harita Nickel business unit also hosts lively celebrations with a variety of events. These include music festivals, barbecues, food bazaars, and many more. Finally, a festive fireworks display marks the end of 2022 and the beginning of a new chapter in 2023.<o:p></o:p>

Celebrating Christmas and New Year 2023 at the Obi Site

A man in a green uniform walks through a dense forest. His gaze was drawn to the densely packed rows of sea ketapan and sengon trees, the branches of which were teeming with various birds. The man's name is Badrus Soleh, and he is in charge of the tree's growth. He also looks after other tree species so that they can thrive in the HARITA Nickel Site Obi reclamation area.
Badrus is the Environmental and Reclamation Supervisor of Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP). This year marks a decade of Badrus' career at HARITA Nickel. Reclamation is more than just a job responsibility for him. Reclamation is a lifelong passion, love, and commitment to environmental sustainability. This line of work gives Badrus more purpose in life.

Badrus stated that his interest in reclamation stemmed from his love of farming. “I was very fond of plant cultivation activities when I was a teenager. My enthusiasm is channeled through my current job as a supervisor in the reclamation department, thus I work wholeheartedly with optimal results,” said Badrus who was born in Magelang 35 years ago.

Working wholeheartedly makes Badrus enjoy every task at HARITA Nickel. According to Badrus, his current profession has a major role in the sustainable industry. “Reclamation is a form of corporate responsibility towards sustainable natural resource management. Environmental management and reclamation activities must continue to ensure the safety of all life in the mine's vicinity,” said Badrus.

The Sebelas Maret University alumnus, who majored in Agriculture, also explained that environmental management and reclamation are concerned with what happens in the future, not just today, tomorrow, or the day after. This conservation activity is also governed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Decree No. 1827 of 2018 on Guidelines for the Implementation of Good Mining Engineering Rules, which all mining companies must follow.

Even though Badrus enjoys his current profession, it does not come without challenges. One of the most difficult challenges he faces, he claims, is the limited layer of the root zone. This drives him to continue innovating, conducting various experiments, and developing effective and efficient reclamation methods that can be used in a variety of field challenges.

Challenges in the field can be overcome and turned into something of high value with good teamwork. "Critical land can be converted into ecologically productive land, and it will provide economic benefits in the future," Badrus said. He continued, "A well-maintained nature always offers great benefits to anyone who participates in its maintenance."

The trees planted by Badrus and his team not only benefit the environment but also provide economic opportunities that can be capitalized on. "Some of the trees we plant have the potential for economic development, such as red jabon, whose wood can be used as furniture and construction materials, eucalyptus, whose leaves can be used to make essential oil products, and citronella, which is an essential oil ingredient while reducing erosion," Badrus explained.

Process Continuity&nbsp;

Achieving success is the result of a series of processes. Badrus sees his current career phase as a continuation of his efforts to provide the best innovation. "I've always believed that tomorrow must be better than today." "Never tire of learning new things and continue to innovate with a sincere heart," said the Sragen resident.

This process also provided him with valuable experience, as he worked at HARITA Nickel. "This current career opportunity is the greatest honor of my life." By appointing me to a supervisory position in the reclamation field, the company has demonstrated its confidence in and appreciation for my previous performance. "I feel proud and challenged to manage each task and team better," he said.

Badrus' goal is not just to plant a lot of trees; he wants to broaden everyone's understanding that caring for the environment is a shared responsibility. "Of course, this is a fantastic challenge." A group prayer was said before the New Year's Eve activities started.&nbsp; They wish that all of the struggles that they overcame in 2021 will turn into blessings in the future.
After the event's opening, performers were ready to take the stage. The residents of HARITA alternately demonstrated their singing talents. While some played locally inspired music, others sang well-known international songs. "Welcome to the City of Ternate" was the title of one of the folk songs played. The song conveys a longing for one's place of residence and the people who inhabit it.
Obi Site is a long way from the homes and families of the HARITA people who are celebrating New Year's Eve here. The feeling of loneliness was, however, dispelled by the presence of coworkers and intriguing activities. The HARITA People are a brand-new family in a strange country. Intense communication both inside and outside of work hours helps to develop this tight bond. This New Year's Eve celebration is also an occasion that improves the connection.
This New Year's Eve was a special occasion, according to Setyawan, the MSP Deputy for Engineering and the Environment (PTL). The evening is dedicated to the HARITA People, who have spent the last two years battling the Covid-19 pandemic. In the field where the New Year's Eve event was taking place, local and foreign employees gathered. The festive mood is set off when a group of dancers enters the area. The resonant dance accompaniment song appears to be inviting HARITA Personnel in the LQ area to instantaneously join the new year together.

On that night, the soya-soya and lalayon dances were performed. The soya-soya dance is thought to have existed between 1570 and 1583 when Sultan Baabullah was in charge of the Ternate sultanate. "I've never had a special New Year's Eve party before, but here I am, as the event committee for New Year's Eve. I get the impression that the more friends I have, the more knowledge I get. Opening a New Chapter in Site Obi

Harita Nickel, through PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), is strengthening workforce capabilities by providing employees with the opportunity to learn nickel processing technology in China. A total of 242 employees have taken part in the programme as part of the company’s commitment to knowledge and technology transfer and to ensuring its workforce is well equipped to support safe and sustainable operations.
The programme gives employees first-hand exposure to the technology and processes used in ferronickel production. Beyond technical knowledge and equipment operation, participants gain insights into workplace practices and safety standards associated with the technology.

Alexander Lieman, Chief Deputy Head of External Relations and CSR at Harita Nickel, said investing in workforce development is an important part of the company’s commitment to building the capabilities needed to support sustainable operations.
“This programme is part of our commitment to knowledge and technology transfer and to strengthening our employees’ capabilities. As the technology used in our production processes originates from China, learning directly there gives our employees an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the technology and how it is operated,” Alexander said.
Of the 242 employees who participated, 177 came from various parts of North Maluku Province, including Kawasi, Laiwui, Wayaloar, Labuha and Ternate. The remaining 65 participants came from Ambon, Surabaya, Malang and Jakarta.
The participation of local talent is an important aspect of the programme. For employees from North Maluku, the opportunity to learn in China provides valuable exposure and experience that can help them develop skills relevant to the growing nickel processing industry.
Among the participants was Kamarullah, a native of Kawasi, who spent three months in China learning about the technology used in the company’s production processes. He was one of four participants from Kawasi who took part in the programme.
“I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to learn in China. During the three months there, I learned how to operate the technology used by the company,” Kamarullah said.
For Kamarullah, the experience was an opportunity to broaden his knowledge and strengthen his skills for his role at the company.
Another participant, Abdullah, said the experience also changed the way he approached his work, particularly in terms of discipline and applying what he had learned during the programme.
“The most valuable lesson I took away from my time in China was discipline. We learned many things that we can apply in Indonesia, especially by sharing our experience and knowledge with our colleagues,” he said.
Abdullah now serves as a team leader in the nickel printing section. He said the knowledge and experience gained in China would not only benefit the participants but could also be shared with colleagues when they returned to Indonesia.
