Harita Nickel again held Obi Fishing Tournament 2023 in Kawasi Waters, Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku.
The second tournament held to promote biodiversity in Obi waters was more spectacular. For instance, while last year's inaugural tournament was only attended by Kawasi villagers, this year's tournament was also participated by residents of its neighboring village, Soligi.
A total of 193 participants from the two villages participated in the event titled "Pesona Mangael Ikang di Obi" which lasted for two days, on March 18-19, 2023.
In addition to involving more participants, the second tournament's fish catch was much heavier. The first winner was a Giant Trevally, or Bobara as the locals named it, weighing 23.51 kg. In second and third position were Geropa fish weighing 15.91 kg and 15.13 kg respectively.
<img alt="Turnamen mancing 2023 web 3" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/old/images/Turnamen Mancing 2023_web 3.jpg">

Committee Chairman of Obi Fishing Tournament 2023, Apolinavis F Mbata said the annual event organized by Harita Nickel as a means of education as well as promoting biodiversity of Obi waters located around operational site of the nickel mining and downstream company.
"With the fish catch in this year's tournament, which is more abundant, may boost up our enthusiasm and love to keep preserving the Kawasi sea," he said, during the peak of the winner announcement and prize giving ceremony which took place on the Kawasi beach, Sunday (19/2/2023).
Furthermore, it is hoped that this activity can strengthen the community togetherness in the surrounding mining village with the company, which has been harmonious so far.
The tournament was closed with the awarding of trophies and cash prizes totaling Rp 44 million for six champions. This amount does not include prizes that were also given to winners of quizzes at the venue and on social media.
Saidi Jouronga (58), a resident of Kawasi Village and winner of the first Obi Fishing Tournament 2023, recognized the abundance of fish in Kawasi waters.
Saidi admits that he is still pursuing his profession as a fisherman. He goes to sea every day from 6am and returns home in the evening. His average catch is between 20 to 30 kg. As an illustration, its price in the local village is between Rp40,000 to Rp50,000 per kilogram.
He added that when he participated in the tournament, the grandfather of 9 grandchildren went out after maghrib and at 11 pm had submitted the fish catch which was determined by the committee as the first winner. This means that he fished for only about 3 hours. And even then, he said, it was less than 2 kilometers from the shoreline.
"So if anyone says there are no fish in the Kawasi sea, or even if there are fish, they don't want to eat them because the water is dirty, that's a big lie. I was born in Kawasi, and I fish here every day until now, so I know it well," he explains.
In line with Saidi, Hut Ibrahim (60), a local resident who also works as a fisherman, admitted that he is still fishing in the waters of Kawasi.&nbsp; Like Saidi, Ibrahim fishes using traditional equipment such as fishing rods. His catches are mostly Bobara, Grouper, Red Snapper and squid.
"We don't go to sea if the weather is not good, such as high waves. If the weather is good, we will definitely go to sea because it is for our daily needs and children's schooling," explained the second winner of the tournament.
<figure><img alt="Turnamen mancing di kawasi web 3" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/old/images/Turnamen Mancing di Kawasi_web 3.jpg"> </figure>
The father of 6 children said he was happy with the tournament held by Harita Nickel. Cash amounting to Rp10 million prize as champion II, according to him will be used for school fees his youngest child who is still in high school.
Many studies have revealed the biodiversity of Obi Island's waters. These waters are home to natural coral reefs that serve as a breeding ground for a variety of marine life. These waters also have high fisheries productivity, characterized by many variants of fish both basic fish (demersal) and surface fish (pelagic).
Harita Nickel has made a number of sustainable environmental management efforts to maintain productivity as well as prevent disruption of the marine ecosystem on Obi Island.
Director of Health, Safety, and Enviromental PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (PT TBP), Tonny H. Gultom said the efforts made include regulating activities at the port such as provisions for ships not to dispose of waste in the Obi water area, releasing ballast water from ships in waters far from the port, and placing anchors in designated areas.
"This program aims to ensure environmental management is carried out in accordance with regulations and works with the best performance," Tonny said.
In addition, several marine monitoring programs are carried out which include monitoring seawater quality (physical and chemical parameters), marine sediment quality, and marine biota (plankton, benthos, coral reefs and reef fish). This program implementation is supported by sea monitoring vehicles and equipped with well-tested technology.
Meanwhile, Director of External Relations of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (PT TBP), Stevi Thomas, said the company continues to prioritize best practices in performing its operations that cover various aspects in a responsible and sustainable manner.
" We have seen from this second tournament that good quality fishes are still widely available in the Kawasi waters. This is not only for tournament needs, but also for daily consumption. Let's protect this sea together to ensure that it remains a source of livelihood for many people," said Stevi.
For information, the Obi Fishing Tournament 2023 kicked off on Saturday (18/3/2023) afternoon in Kawasi Village. The tournament itself started at 17.00 WIT and ended with weighing of the catches at around 10.00 am WIT.
In the opening and closing events, various arts and entertainment were also performed by local children presenting traditional dances. The event was made more lively by two hilarious hosts from Ternate, Tete Ko and Saya Khoko.

Harita Nickel Again Holds Obi Fishing Tournament in Kawasi Waters

Eastern Indonesian waters, especially in Obi Island, are among the most productive waters in the world. This is because these waters are the meeting point between two large oceans, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean.
The meeting of the two large oceans is called the Indonesian Throughflow (ARLINDO). In Obi Island waters, ARLINDO passes through the northern part of Obi via the north of Bisa Island, the western part of Obi, and the southern part through the south of Gamumu Island. This allows the productivity of Obi Island waters to be very high.
The productivity of Obi Island's waters is indicated by the number of pelagic fish&mdash;a group of fish that reside in the surface layer of water&mdash;in the area. The presence of these fish, according to a lecturer at Diponegoro University's Department of Oceanography, Prof. Dr. Denny Nugroho Sugianto, S.T., M.Si. has a positive impact on the sustainability of fisheries productivity in Indonesia.
"Primary fisheries productivity is closely related to oceanographic conditions that bring nutrients for phytoplankton growth near the sea surface, thus enriching the biomass in the area," he said.
"ARLINDO from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean will bring many benefits to Indonesia because of the high productivity of fisheries or waters. It will bring large pelagic fish species, and the pattern will be followed by tuna, skipjack, and other large fish. This has a positive impact on the sustainability or productivity of fisheries in Indonesia," he explained.
To maintain productivity, ensure fisheries sustainability, and prevent disruption of the marine ecosystem in Obi Island, Harita has made a number of environmental management efforts. These efforts include regulating activities at the port, such as rules for ships not to dispose of waste in the Obi water area, releasing ballast water from ships in waters far from the port, and placing anchors in designated areas. This program aims to ensure that environmental management is carried out in accordance with regulations and runs at its best.
Several marine monitoring programs were also conducted, including monitoring of seawater quality (physical and chemical parameters), marine sediment quality, and marine biota (plankton, benthos, coral reefs, and reef fish). The implementation of this program is supported by ocean monitoring vehicles and equipment with well-tested technology.
The marine monitoring vehicles and equipment consist of in-house survey vessels, seawater sampling equipment integrated with seawater column profile measuring instruments (Conductivity Temperature Depth - CTD meters) equipped with sensors measuring physical parameters of seawater, grab samplers, and Remotely Operated Vehicles - ROVs (underwater 'robots' to support marine management and monitoring programs, explore, and inspect underwater conditions directly).
Influenced by Oceanographic Factors
The productivity of Obi Island waters and its surroundings is strongly influenced by oceanographic factors, namely ARLINDO, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll-a concentration. This is in line with the statement of the Director of Health, Safety, and Environmental Trimegah Bangun Persada, Tonny H. Gultom. In his opinion, the primary productivity of water is closely related to oceanographic conditions.
Trimegah Bangun Persada is a National Strategic Project mandate holder that operates nickel mining and downstream projects in Obi Island, South Halmahera.
In line with Prof. Dr. Denny Nugroho Sugianto, S.T., M.Si, Tonny also said that the highest distribution and concentration of Chlorophyll-a in Obi Island are in the northern part, in addition to the distribution of warmer water surface temperature conditions in this part. This circumstance suggests that the waters in Obi Island's northern parts are more productive than the island's other water sections. For your information, Harita Nickel's operational area is in the western part of Obi Island.
Furthermore, the distribution of fishing businesses is also more concentrated in the northern part of Obi Island (north of Bisa Island) and the southern part of Obi Island (south of Gamumu Island). This condition corresponds with the presence of ARLINDO, warm surface water temperatures, and high water concentrations in these waters.
Despite many factors affecting the productivity of Obi Island's waters, Harita is committed to keeping Obi Island's waters undisturbed through various programs delivered by the company and third parties. This program is also coupled with other initiatives to mitigate impacts that may result from nickel mining and downstream operations.
Harita also implemented an artificial reef placement program in stages, starting with a target of 1,000 pieces using hollow concrete cubes. The placement of artificial reefs aims to enrich the local ecosystem, as good coral reef conditions will be able to maintain the lives of reef fish and other marine life, ultimately benefiting the local community.
Harita also performed mangrove rehabilitation in several villages in South Halmahera, including Soligi Village in Obi Island, Guruapin Village in Kayoa District, and Belang-belang Village and Awanggo Village in Bacan Subdistrict. Mangroves have been gradually planted in an area of 20 hectares with a total of 47 thousand seedlings.
The establishment of mangrove forest areas will help maintain the availability of fish resources in the sea, clean water, and fresh air. Mangroves are also well-recognized for their ability to prevent erosion and abrasion.

Is the Marine Biota in Obi Island Safe? This is What Oceanography Experts Say

Recent initiatives to promote the electric vehicle industry in the country have also raised the popularity of nickel-producing areas, as nickel is one of the raw materials for electric vehicle batteries. One of the nickel-producing areas is Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. However, it was recently hit by marine pollution issues allegedly due to nickel mining and downstream activities by Harita Nickel.
Harita Nickel is accused of polluting Obi Island waters due to its mining waste being dumped into the sea. We have confirmed that the company has always carried out its mining activities under the Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL) document since it commenced operations in Obi Island in 2010.
Under its two Mining Business Permits (IUP), Harita Nickel has started mining in an area of 5,523 ha in Obi Island since 2010. Prior to Harita Nickel's operations, this area had already been exposed to land due to past logging. Its operational area is also on red laterite soil in general, so regardless of mining activities, the soil is reddish brown when exposed to rain and may cause turbidity, both in the downstream area and the sea.
"Prior to land clearing, we conducted baseline studies, such as flora and fauna identification, as well as ecological studies in land and seawater areas. This is to identify the initial state so that there is environmental mitigation during operational activities, as well as efforts to conserve the biodiversity of flora and fauna and maintain the ecological conditions of waters from land to sea," said Tonny Gultom, HSE Director of Trimegah Bangun Persada, the company mandated by the National Strategic Project at Site Obi.
In performing mining activities, Harita Nickel applies a horizontal stripping mechanism, also referred to as an open cast method. Therefore, land excavation in mining activities is quite superficial, averaging around 10–20 meters.
"Our mining method is different from other mineral ores mining, including gold and copper. Nickel mining is generally done in laterite soil with low porosity, so the natural vegetation is not dense and the top soil containing nutrients is thin. Therefore, reclamation of mined land is carried out immediately without waiting for the mine to complete operations to regenerate the mined area and reduce erosion," Tonny added.
<img alt="Hjf water sampling web" src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/old/images/HJF_Water Sampling_web.jpg" title="Hjf water sampling web">
<figcaption>The company conducts regular water quality monitoring at several points in its work area</figcaption>

The company has actively involved community participation from the initial stage until the operation period, which includes delivering positive social, economic, and environmental benefits.
"We always perform our obligations properly. Environmental management and monitoring activities are routinely carried out and reported every 6 months to LHK and ESDM. They also directly verify the conditions on site," Tonny said.
Water management has also become Harita's special concern in performing nickel mining activities in Obi Island, including the construction of a sediment storage pond or Sediment Treatment Pond (STP) implemented with government licenses. The benefit of the pond is to manage mine runoff water from the rain so that it does not impact the surrounding environment. For the record, nickel mine runoff water is not acidic, unlike that from gold and coal mines.
"We made a Sediment Treatment Pond (STP), a sediment or mud collection pond. Nickel sludge cannot be filtered, but principally the energy is reduced. One of them is the zig-zag method. Thus, the mud carried by rainwater is deposited in the sediment pond. The monitoring results of mine runoff water are also routinely reported to the LHK every 3 months," Tonny said.
All of Harita Nickel's statements were also supported by a statement from the Environmental Investigator of the North Maluku Environmental Agency (DLH), Yusra Hi Noho. Yusra clarified the issue circulating that fish in Obi Island could not be consumed due to heavy metal contamination.
"That is not verified, especially for Harita Nickel, whose environmental management process is very good. They control mine runoff water through sediment pond points that are maintained and monitored. So to prove it (the issue of environmental and marine pollution in Obi Island) we are a bit difficult if it comes from Harita," said Yusra.
It should be noted that there is not only Harita Nickel operating in Obi Island, but there are other companies as well.
" At this point, we know that Harita Nickel performs environmental treatment and management for its waste under applicable government regulations and has proven its compliance. It all refers to legal environmental management standards," Yusra added.
As for the pH and TSS parameter test processing, Harita Nickel routinely carries it out every day. The company is also required to conduct monthly monitoring and analysis in accredited laboratories and report to the Environmental Agency every quarter. The monitoring results show that the company has met the quality standards in accordance with Minister of Environment Regulation No. 9 of 2006, concerning Wastewater Quality Standards for Businesses and/or Nickel Ore Mining.
"They tested all the parameters, and (all allegations) were not proven. Incidentally, I previously led the team that evaluated environmental management in the past years. Once we evaluate it, it is not proven at all," Yusra said.
Yusra also dismissed allegations that Harita had dumped tailings into the sea. The company has been granted a permit to place tailings on land by the Ministry of Environment; it is at the mined location.
"The tailings material is placed at the hole or strip mine. In other words, it is returned to nature, to the place where the material was originally mined. Therefore, dumping tailings into the sea is not true, it's a hoax," said Yusra.

Is It True that Harita Polluted Obi Island's Waters? Here Is the Fact

<div style="mso-element: para-border-div; border: solid #E5E5E5 1.0pt; mso-border-alt: solid #E5E5E5 .25pt; padding: 0cm 0cm 0cm 0cm; background: white;">
Economic News, Jakarta - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (<a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" href="https://wartaekonomi.co.id/tag-3507/kementerian-energi-dan-sumber-daya-mineral-esdm">ESDM</a>) Arifin Tasrif has said Indonesia will produce 1.5 giga tons of CO2 by 2060.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>
"These emissions projections are based on a business-as-usual scenario, in which there is no effort to explore more environmentally friendly energy," said the Minister at a side event of the B20 Summit forum, during the signing of the B20 Task Force Agreement, Sustainability &amp; Climate Business Action in Nusa Dua, Bali, some time ago.<o:p></o:p>
With this in mind, the government is committed to pursuing the Net Zero Emission (<a style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" href="https://wartaekonomi.co.id/tag-35049/net-zero-emission-nze">NZE</a>) target by 2060. They have created an energy transition roadmap divided into five-year periods, and are also targeting the rollout of 300,000 electric cars and 1.3 million motorcycles between 2021 and 2025. Moreover, from 2026-2030, a further 2 million electric vehicles and 13 million motorcycles are also being targeted.<o:p></o:p>
</div>
The government's electric vehicle ambition is supported by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL), a pioneer in processing and refining low-grade nickel ore into raw materials for electric vehicle batteries. The Harita Nickel business unit operates a nickel refinery using High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku, with an annual production capacity of 365,000 tons of Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), the raw material for electric vehicle batteries.<o:p></o:p>
PT HPL is not only producing more environmentally friendly raw materials for electric vehicle batteries, but also implementing NZE within its operational areas.<o:p></o:p>
Rico W. Albert, Head of Technical Support at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, explained several efforts already underway. These include increasing the use of New and Renewable Energy (NRE) in the form of solar panels and reducing fossil fuel consumption by using electric vehicles in offices and factories.<o:p></o:p>
The company also reuses rainwater runoff from the factory area in a reservoir to reduce raw water use in the production process.<o:p></o:p>
"We also use ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator) technology, a technology that controls ash and dust from the combustion process, making it more environmentally friendly," said Rico.<o:p></o:p>
Meanwhile, in the living quarters, or employee residences, the company uses solar panel lighting in all outdoor areas and gardens. Besides being energy efficient, this measure reduces cable use and power consumption. Motion-sensor lights are also installed in several locations, automatically turning off when no one is in the room.<o:p></o:p>
Fahmy Radhi, an energy observer from Gadjah Mada University, welcomed the efforts made by nickel mining companies to support the government's NZE program. He believes that the implementation of NZE will not only have a positive impact on the environment but also on the economy and society, as environmentally friendly nickel derivatives have significant economic potential.<o:p></o:p>
"I think this is a positive change, as the energy transition is supported by mining companies in Indonesia. There must be synergy between stakeholders to achieve the NZE target, because the challenges are not easy to overcome," Fahmy concluded.<o:p></o:p>

Halmahera Persada Lygend, Owner of an Electric Vehicle Battery Raw Materials Factory, Supports the NZE 2060 Target

INFO NASIONAL — Rico Windy Albert is the figure behind the successful application of High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) technology at Harita Nickel, under the Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) banner — one of the company’s nickel processing operations on Obi Island in South Halmahera, North Maluku. His name has been recognized within Indonesia’s electric vehicle battery raw materials industry <a style="mso-comment-reference: CA_1; mso-comment-date: 20251029T0627;">since June 23, 2021.</a>
<a style="mso-comment-reference: CA_2; mso-comment-date: 20251029T0629;">His eyes were fixed on the massive cylindrical vessel before him — 36 meters long, 5 meters in diameter, and weighing around 900 tons. His thoughts drifted toward the promising future contained within every ton of limonite ore (low-grade nickel) fed into that vessel. It is from this very vessel that the building blocks of the world’s electric vehicle future would be produced — contributing solutions to the problem of global air pollution.</a><o:p></o:p>
“HPAL is a new technology in Indonesia. Until <a style="mso-comment-reference: CA_3; mso-comment-date: 20251029T0631;">then</a>, no company had successfully implemented it. I questioned at first whether Harita could truly apply it,” recalled Rico, who now serves as the Technical and Environmental Lead (PTL) at HPL. Despite his initial doubts, his determination did not waver. With a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Hasanuddin University and a Master’s in Business Management from Binus University, Rico was driven to make HPAL technology a reality in Indonesia.<o:p></o:p>
Moreover, HPAL is considered more environmentally friendly due to its relatively lower energy use compared to other nickel processing methods. Naturally, this also results in lower emissions. “This is one of Harita Nickel’s contributions toward achieving net zero emissions,” he added. “Our products also play a major role in reducing global vehicle emissions, as they form the raw materials for electric vehicle batteries.”<o:p></o:p>
Since the start of his career, Rico had aspired to see this technology implemented in Indonesia. He had previously spent 25 years at another private mining and nickel processing company, where HPAL development for limonite ore was explored. However, the high investment requirements and significant risk made implementation difficult.<o:p></o:p>
When he learned that Harita Nickel was committed to adopting HPAL technology in one of its processing facilities, Rico was eager to contribute. His journey began in 2019 — a year full of challenges, as HPAL plant construction had only just begun, and a year later the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the movement of materials and personnel. The implementation also required intensive knowledge transfer between foreign experts and local workers.<o:p></o:p>
“Since this is the first time the technology has been applied in Indonesia, we have had to continue learning,” explains Rico. “Knowledge and technology transfer has been ongoing from construction to operations and continues to this day,” he added.<o:p></o:p>
Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) is a joint venture between Harita and Lygend Resource Technology Co., Ltd. “The application of this technology provides Indonesian talent with the opportunity to learn something new,” he emphasized <a style="mso-comment-reference: CA_4; mso-comment-date: 20251029T0635;">— a father of three daughters.</a><o:p></o:p>
As a leader, Rico recognizes that adapting to different work cultures and characteristics is also a challenge he and his team face. However, these challenges were eclipsed by the milestone of the first production of Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) on June 23, 2021. Completing construction and moving to production in around 28 months is an achievement in itself for this Rp15 trillion project.<o:p></o:p>
Previously, limonite ore was not utilized due to its very low nickel content (&lt;1.5%) and was classified as ‘overburden’. “But today, it holds strategic value and is in high demand among electric vehicle battery manufacturers worldwide,” Rico added.<o:p></o:p>
The success achieved by Harita Nickel through Halmahera Persada Lygend has opened the door for Indonesia to assert itself further as a leading global player in the electric vehicle battery industry. “Harita Nickel is a pioneer in Indonesia — not only in processing and refining low-grade nickel ore using HPAL technology, but also in positioning Indonesia one step ahead as a respected producer of electric vehicle battery raw materials,” said Rico.<o:p></o:p>
HPAL technology enables the utilization of low-grade limonite ore, providing it with economic value where previously it had none, and supporting mineral conservation efforts. The process uses sulfuric acid as a processing agent to produce Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), which is then further refined into nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate — key raw materials for electric vehicle batteries.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>
Optimizing Domestic Natural Resources<o:p></o:p>
Home to some of the world’s largest nickel reserves, Indonesia has significant potential to optimize the management of its natural resources. With its nickel mineral reserves, Indonesia can contribute to reducing global emissions, particularly in the transportation sector, by supporting the shift from fossil-fueled vehicles to electric vehicles.<o:p></o:p>
Even as a pioneer in processing nickel into electric vehicle battery materials, Rico acknowledges that similar companies will follow and produce similar products. Therefore, he and his team remain committed to continuous innovation together with Harita Nickel and its affiliates, in developing an advanced downstream nickel industry in Obi Island, North Maluku.<o:p></o:p>

Harita Nickel Supports the Government in Reducing Carbon Emissions

Edy Kamaraha, a fisherman from Kawasi village, Obi Island, beamed with joy as he disembarked from his motorboat. He was carrying two grouper and two giant tuna, each weighing approximately 8 kg, to the yard of the blue Fishermen's Farming Business Center (SUTAN) to clean his catch.<o:p></o:p>
"The fish here (in the waters of Kawasi) are large and fresh. Thanks to Harita Nickel's assistance, we can temporarily store our catch and maintain its quality," he said as he loaded the two fish into one of the 500 kg cold storage facilities.<o:p></o:p>
The high productive potential of the marine ecosystem in the waters surrounding Kawasi waters are a boon to the Kawasi Village fishermen's group, as their catch can meet the food needs of Harita Nickel employees.<o:p></o:p>
In return, the group have received assistance in the form of boats, cold storage, and, more importantly, a distribution channel for the fishermen's catch to meet Harita Nickel's employee consumption needs. This support forms part of one of the company's community development and empowerment programs.<o:p></o:p>
The overarching goal is to improve productivity and boost the local economy. This assistance is provided, not only to fishermen, but also to local suppliers who have been supplying the company with fish.<o:p></o:p>
Previously, the company's employees' fish needs were met by suppliers from outside Obi Island. At that time, several factors prevented local fishermen from supplying the company's needs, including a lack of storage space for their catch. Consequently, the fish was not fresh and could not be resold.<o:p></o:p>
Based on this, an empowerment program for fishermen was implemented through the provision of boats and cold storage facilities managed by the fishermen of Kawasi Village. Now, with storage facilities in place, the quality of the catch can be assured.<o:p></o:p>

Large, Abundant, Fresh Fish: Fishermen of Obi Island Rejoice!

On Tuesday, September 13, 2022), Harita Nickel inaugurated a central activity hub for the Farmers and Fisherfolk Business Center (known by the Indonesian acronym SUTAN) in Kawasi Village, Obi District, South Halmahera, North Maluku. The business activity center was built and equipped with two units of cool storage facilities with a capacity of 500 kilograms (kg) per unit, allowing fisherfolk in Kawasi Village to store their catch.<o:p></o:p>
Head of External Relations at Harita Nickel, Stevi Thomas, stated that the establishment of the Fisherfolk Business Center in Kawasi Village is part of Harita Nickel’s Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM) for the fishing community in Kawasi Village, Obi Island.<o:p></o:p>
Stevi went on to explains that this program was implemented to help fisherfolk in Kawasi Village in managing their catch.<o:p></o:p>
“SUTAN is a pilot initiative for modern, small-scale capture fisheries management, meant to support fisherfolk in Kawasi Village in their fishing activities,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (September 14).<o:p></o:p>
In addition, he continued, with the presence of cool storage facilities totaling one ton in capacity, the quality and quantity of the fishermen’s catch can be maintained and controlled.<o:p></o:p>
“The provision of cool storage also aims to maintain the freshness and quality of the fish meat that is caught,” he added.<o:p></o:p>

Stevi revealed that several companies under Harita Nickel that operate on Obi Island require a large supply of fish to meet consumption needs for all employees.<o:p></o:p>
Until now, the company has relied on 10 suppliers who also come from Kawasi Village. However, all the fish has still been sourced from outside Obi Island, resulting in high transportation costs and frequent complaints from the company’s catering vendors due to inconsistent fish quality.<o:p></o:p>
This situation became a particular concern for Harita Nickel, prompting the company to start empowering fisherfolk in Kawasi Village so they can also become suppliers of fish for the company.<o:p></o:p>
“Certainly, another goal of providing this facility is to improve the competitiveness of the fisherfolk in Kawasi Village,” Stevi stated.<o:p></o:p>
Meanwhile, at the inauguration event, Harita Nickel also brought representatives from PT GDSK, one of the company’s catering vendors on Obi Island. In the future, it is expected that fisherfolk from Kawasi Village will be able to sell their catch to the catering vendor according to company quality standards and at competitive prices.<o:p></o:p>

The Head of Kawasi Village, Arifin Saroa, expressed his gratitude to Harita Nickel for providing support and assistance to fishing groups in his village.<o:p></o:p>
“We express our gratitude to Harita Nickel for the support and assistance given to the people of Kawasi Village. We hope that Harita Nickel will continue to provide guidance for the development of local community enterprises,” he said.<o:p></o:p>
Arifin also explained that the cool storage provided by Harita will be very useful in maintaining the quality of the fishermen’s catch so that it does not spoil quickly.<o:p></o:p>
Appreciation was also voiced by Imam Abadan Nomor, Coordinator of SUTAN North Kawasi, and Edy Kamaraha, Coordinator of SUTAN South Kawasi. Both expressed their hope that Harita Nickel will continue to provide mentoring and collaboration until SUTAN becomes a fully professional business unit capable of supplying markets beyond Obi Island.<o:p></o:p>
Harita Nickel is part of the Harita Group, operating on Obi Island, South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. In addition to holding a mining license (IUP), since 2016 the company has operated a saprolite nickel smelter, and since 2021 it has also operated nickel limonite processing and refining facilities in the same operational area. These facilities support the Indonesian government’s downstream mineral policy by processing nickel ore supplied by Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) and Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS).<o:p></o:p>
Working through Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPAL), Harita Nickel has become a pioneer in Indonesia with regards to processing and refining low-grade limonite nickel using High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) technology. This technology makes it possible to convert previously unused limonite ore into a strategic product, Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP). Through the next processing stage currently under development, MHP will be further refined into Nickel Sulfate (NiSO₄) and Cobalt Sulfate (CoSO₄), which are raw materials for electric vehicle batteries.<o:p></o:p>

North Maluku Governor Proud of Harita Nickel’s Environmental Management

Harita Nickel in collaboration with the Khairun University (Unkhair) Ternate’s Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK), North Maluku, supports the conservation and rehabilitation of mangrove forests in several locations in South Halmahera Regency (Halsel). This collaboration is realized through the socialization and rehabilitation of mangrove forests in Awanggo Village, Bacan District, South Halmahera Regency.&nbsp;
The Socialization and mangrove planting activities take the theme 'Preserving Nature for the Sustainability of Civilization'. This activity coincides with the commemoration of National Nature Conservation Day which falls on August 10, 2022, where Harita Nickel and Unkhair target to plant 39 thousand mangrove seedlings this year. The activity was attended by the President Director of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada, Donald J. Hermanus, the Regent and Deputy Regent of South Halmahera, Usman Sidik and Hasan Ali Bassam Kasuba, the Dean of FPIK Unkhair, Dr. M. Janib Achmad, S.PI., M.Sc, as well as a number of officials for the South Halmahera Forkopimda.&nbsp;

The restoration of mangrove forests in the coastal areas of villages in South Sulawesi is one of the routine programs carried out by Harita Nickel in collaboration with Unkhair Ternate. This activity actively involves village heads and residents living around the coastal area to build a good mangrove ecosystem.&nbsp;

Harita Nickel and Unkhair also formed a Mangrove Care Group in each village which will play a role in the process of maintaining, monitoring, and managing mangrove forests in the future. Mangrove seedlings are planted around the coast of Belang-Belang Village and Awanggo Village which are considered vulnerable to soil erosion. The activity involved dozens of villagers who helped make this mangrove forest rehabilitation event a success.&nbsp;

"The President Director of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada, Donald J. Hermanus told TIMES Indonesia, Thursday (11/8/2022), stating that Harita Nickel views the rehabilitation of mangrove forests as very important, considering that mangroves can absorb CO2 and contribute greatly to increasing the biodiversity of marine life," he said. This concern and high commitment to the environment also moved Harita Nickel to cooperate with FPIK Unkhair Ternate.

“Since last year with Unkhair, we have planted more than 8 thousand mangrove seedlings in an area of 6.5 hectares, in Soligi Village, Obi District, South Halmahera. This year we are again showing our commitment to protecting coastal ecosystems by rehabilitating mangrove forests in several locations”, said Donald. Donald explained that this year’s mangrove forest rehabilitation activities were carried out in four villages, namely Guruapin Village in Kayoa District, Belang-Belang Village and Awanggo Village in Bacan District, and Soligi Village on Obi Island. The total number of mangrove seedlings planted this year is more than 39 thousand seedlings.&nbsp;

So that in the past two years, Harita Nickel and Unkhair have targeted to rehabilitate mangrove forests in South Halmahera by planting more than 47 thousand seedlings in an area of 20 hectares. Donald expressed his highest appreciation to Unkhair, the youth members of the Mangrove Care Group, and their coaches who have diligently cared for and maintained the sustainability of the rehabilitated mangrove forest for the past year and will continue for the following years. According to him, community involvement and capacity building related to mangroves like this are the main keys to this success, so that not only mangrove seedlings grow well, but the public’s caring, awareness, and knowledge about the important role of mangrove forests in life. Separately, the Regent of South Halmahera, Usman Sidik, expressed his appreciation for the role of Harita Nickel and FPIK Khairun University (Unkhair) who actively carried out socialization in increasing awareness of the surrounding community on the importance of the role of mangroves for the coastal environment. "We should be grateful and give great appreciation to Harita for helping the government nationally, not only regional governments, in terms of socializing this mangrove rehabilitation, because mangroves are very important for our lives going forward," said Usman.&nbsp;

He also appreciated Harita's initiative to rehabilitate mangroves not only in its operational area on Obi Island but also in several locations in South Halmahera. "It's really amazing, Harita even formed a mangrove care group and financed the planting and monitoring of the growth and development of the mangrove, and the impact on the community was extraordinary.”&nbsp;

Usman also hopes that Harita Nickel and Unkhair students can continue to synergize with the local government to help increase capacity and build community capabilities in empowering mangrove forests. In the same place, the Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences Unkhair, M. Janib Achmad stated that community-based rehabilitation of mangrove forests and empowerment of coastal communities is one solution to maintain the sustainability of mangrove ecosystems in coastal areas. According to Janib, mangroves have many benefits for the environment around the coast. "One mangrove leaf can attract 5 to 7 times blue carbon compared to ordinary leaves and on the other hand, mangroves are also a place of shelter and breeding for marine biota around the coast," he explained.&nbsp;

He continued, mangrove forests rehabilitation activities such as those carried out by Unkhair Ternate and Harita Nickel are expected to provide a source of livelihood for the community through the wealth of marine life that is increasingly maintained.
