OBI ISLAND, KOMPAS.com - Harita Nickel officially operates the PT Halmahera Jaya Production (PT HJF), a ferronickel smelter business unit located in the village of Kawasi Village, sub-district of Obi, Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku, Tuesday (18/10/2022). Head of External Relations of Harita Nickel Stevi Thomas said PT HJF is targeted to produce 780,000 metric tons of ferronickel per year. PT HJF's ferronickel smelter is planned to be in full production capacity by 2023.
Stevi added, a year ago, Harita Nickel has officially operated PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (PT HPL) producing Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), the main raw material for electric vehicle batteries. "16 months later we managed to operate PT HJF producing ferronickel," said Stevi in a press release on Tuesday (18/10/2022).

Head of Technical Support Harita Nickel Rico Windy Albert confirmed that at this time, during the first production, the plant only operated one line of eight production lines. He further said the production target of the plant's several lines would be delivered in phases. It is planned that the operation of eight production lines of PTHJF will be performed in 1st semester of 2023. Rico said the total manpower required during the full operation of PT HJF is approx. 5,000 workers.

"Currently, with only one production line, PT HJF has employed 2,600 employees," said Rico. The manpower required to run the plant is from the local workforces of South Halmahera in particular and generally from North Maluku. We conducted a recruitment roadshow held in Labuha, South Halmahera, and Laiwui village, sub-district of Obi, Obi Island. "About 65% of the hired workers are the origins of North Maluku," said Rico.

Harita Nickel Officially Operates a-780,000 metric Ton Per Year Capacity Ferronickel Smelter

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Harita Nickel through its business unit PT Halmahera Jaya Ferronickel (PT HJF) held a recruitment roadshow to villages around its nickel mine site. The recruitment roadshow took place on 5-11 October 2022, and was held at the Laiwui village of Obi sub-district and the city of Labuha, South Halmahera.
Head of Harita Nickel External Relations, Stevi Thomas said until September 2022, Harita Nickel through PT HJF in partnership with the South Halmahera Transmigration and Manpower Office, has recruited 1,200 employees and plans to recruit additional 600 workers by end of the year.

“Regarding the number of applicants, this year, the company has recruited 1,800 skilled and non-skilled workers. Next year, it is projected that at least 700-1,000 workers will be recruited and we will prioritize local manpower," said Stevi in a press release, Friday (10/14/2022).

Requirements for the employment recruitment presented in the roadshow included graduates of high school, passing a basic knowledge test, a medical examination test, etc. All Harita Nickel recruitment processes are free of charge. "PT HJF is very transparent in recruiting non-skilled local workers in Obi Island, South Halmahera, and North Maluku," Stevi added.

In 2021, the recruitment roadshow was held in the villages of Kawasi and Laiwui, city of Labuha, targeting to recruit 500 workers. However, considering the large number of applicants and the progress of manpower needs, the number recruited last year exceeded the target of 700 workers. In the meantime, to ensure that applicants are originally from Obi Island and the South Halmahera region, PT HJF verified the applicants' ID cards and recommendations from the village administration.

The priority of recruited workers is jobseekers originating from the villages of Kawasi and Laiwui whilst the second priority goes to applicants from Obi Island and the city of Labuha. Stevi stated that until the roadshow ended, there were 1,200 applicants from Obi Island and 800 applicants from the city of Labuha completed the application forms.

Many jobseekers domiciling outside of South Halmahera also attended the roadshow including those from Ambon and Seram. However, at this time, the priority focused on those domiciling from South Halmahera.

“Since the beginning of the recruitment roadshow, the company has involved the village and sub-district administrations and the Manpower Office of South Halmahera. The communication sessions are delivered through the village and sub-district administrations in Obi Island," said Stevi.

The recruitment roadshow held at Laiwui village was attended by 2 staff of the South Halmahera Manpower Office. Roadshow at Labuha would be on October 9 and 10, 2022.

For information, Harita Nickel is part of the Harita Group operating on the Island of Obi, South Halmahera, North Maluku. Harita Nickel operates a nickel saprolite smelter and nickel limonite refinery in the same operational area. Harita Nickel runs a processing and refining nickel limonite (low grade).

A Nickel Company in Halmahera Opens Job, Interested?

Edy Kamaraha, a fisherman from Kawasi village, Obi Island, beamed with joy as he disembarked from his motorboat. He was carrying two grouper and two giant tuna, each weighing approximately 8 kg, to the yard of the blue Fishermen's Farming Business Center (SUTAN) to clean his catch.
"The fish here (in the waters of Kawasi) are large and fresh. Thanks to Harita Nickel's assistance, we can temporarily store our catch and maintain its quality," he said as he loaded the two fish into one of the 500 kg cold storage facilities.
The high productive potential of the marine ecosystem in the waters surrounding Kawasi waters are a boon to the Kawasi Village fishermen's group, as their catch can meet the food needs of Harita Nickel employees.
In return, the group have received assistance in the form of boats, cold storage, and, more importantly, a distribution channel for the fishermen's catch to meet Harita Nickel's employee consumption needs. This support forms part of one of the company's community development and empowerment programs.
The overarching goal is to improve productivity and boost the local economy. This assistance is provided, not only to fishermen, but also to local suppliers who have been supplying the company with fish.
Previously, the company's employees' fish needs were met by suppliers from outside Obi Island. At that time, several factors prevented local fishermen from supplying the company's needs, including a lack of storage space for their catch. Consequently, the fish was not fresh and could not be resold.
Based on this, an empowerment program for fishermen was implemented through the provision of boats and cold storage facilities managed by the fishermen of Kawasi Village. Now, with storage facilities in place, the quality of the catch can be assured.

Large, Abundant, Fresh Fish: Fishermen of Obi Island Rejoice!

On Tuesday, September 13, 2022), Harita Nickel inaugurated a central activity hub for the Farmers and Fisherfolk Business Center (known by the Indonesian acronym SUTAN) in Kawasi Village, Obi District, South Halmahera, North Maluku. The business activity center was built and equipped with two units of cool storage facilities with a capacity of 500 kilograms (kg) per unit, allowing fisherfolk in Kawasi Village to store their catch.
Head of External Relations at Harita Nickel, Stevi Thomas, stated that the establishment of the Fisherfolk Business Center in Kawasi Village is part of Harita Nickel’s Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM) for the fishing community in Kawasi Village, Obi Island.
Stevi went on to explains that this program was implemented to help fisherfolk in Kawasi Village in managing their catch.
“SUTAN is a pilot initiative for modern, small-scale capture fisheries management, meant to support fisherfolk in Kawasi Village in their fishing activities,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (September 14).
In addition, he continued, with the presence of cool storage facilities totaling one ton in capacity, the quality and quantity of the fishermen’s catch can be maintained and controlled.
“The provision of cool storage also aims to maintain the freshness and quality of the fish meat that is caught,” he added.

Stevi revealed that several companies under Harita Nickel that operate on Obi Island require a large supply of fish to meet consumption needs for all employees.
Until now, the company has relied on 10 suppliers who also come from Kawasi Village. However, all the fish has still been sourced from outside Obi Island, resulting in high transportation costs and frequent complaints from the company’s catering vendors due to inconsistent fish quality.
This situation became a particular concern for Harita Nickel, prompting the company to start empowering fisherfolk in Kawasi Village so they can also become suppliers of fish for the company.
“Certainly, another goal of providing this facility is to improve the competitiveness of the fisherfolk in Kawasi Village,” Stevi stated.
Meanwhile, at the inauguration event, Harita Nickel also brought representatives from PT GDSK, one of the company’s catering vendors on Obi Island. In the future, it is expected that fisherfolk from Kawasi Village will be able to sell their catch to the catering vendor according to company quality standards and at competitive prices.
Masyarakat nelayan Desa Kawasi menujukkan ikan hasil tangkapan mereka. Foto: Dokumen Harita Nickel
The Head of Kawasi Village, Arifin Saroa, expressed his gratitude to Harita Nickel for providing support and assistance to fishing groups in his village.
“We express our gratitude to Harita Nickel for the support and assistance given to the people of Kawasi Village. We hope that Harita Nickel will continue to provide guidance for the development of local community enterprises,” he said.
Arifin also explained that the cool storage provided by Harita will be very useful in maintaining the quality of the fishermen’s catch so that it does not spoil quickly.
Appreciation was also voiced by Imam Abadan Nomor, Coordinator of SUTAN North Kawasi, and Edy Kamaraha, Coordinator of SUTAN South Kawasi. Both expressed their hope that Harita Nickel will continue to provide mentoring and collaboration until SUTAN becomes a fully professional business unit capable of supplying markets beyond Obi Island.
Harita Nickel is part of the Harita Group, operating on Obi Island, South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. In addition to holding a mining license (IUP), since 2016 the company has operated a saprolite nickel smelter, and since 2021 it has also operated nickel limonite processing and refining facilities in the same operational area. These facilities support the Indonesian government’s downstream mineral policy by processing nickel ore supplied by Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) and Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS).
Working through Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPAL), Harita Nickel has become a pioneer in Indonesia with regards to processing and refining low-grade limonite nickel using High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) technology. This technology makes it possible to convert previously unused limonite ore into a strategic product, Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP). Through the next processing stage currently under development, MHP will be further refined into Nickel Sulfate (NiSO₄) and Cobalt Sulfate (CoSO₄), which are raw materials for electric vehicle batteries.

Harita Nickel Inaugurates SUTAN, Supporting Increased Productivity of Fisherfolk in Kawasi Village on Obi Island

To help boost the local economy in Soligi Village, South Obi District, South Halmahera—an area within Harita Nickel’s operational scope on Obi Island—the company has encouraged residents to cultivate soybeans and process them into tofu and tempeh for consumption by company employees.
According to Latif Supriadi, Head of Community Affairs at Harita Nickel, this soybean farming and processing program will position Soligi Village as the first upstream-to-downstream, soybean-based food production center in South Halmahera. The main market for these processed products is the catering companies serving Harita Nickel, namely PT GDSK and PT Aden.
He explained that Harita Nickel first began supporting the first soybean cultivation across two hectares of land on July 21, 2022. Then, on September 17, 2022, the Rumah Usaha Tangguh Ekonomi (RUTE) economic empowerment center was inaugurated together with the Soligi village government. The program initially involved 14 women from three hamlets. The goal was that, once production capacity increased, more residents would be able to join, according to the RUTE operating mechanism.
Through RUTE, the women process the soybeans into tofu and tempeh, with a target output of 80,000 pieces per month to meet Harita Nickel employees’ consumption needs. Every month, catering vendors PT GDSK and PT Aden require approximately 80,000 pieces of tofu and tempeh. “With that demand, RUTE has the potential to generate a total monthly turnover of up to IDR 330 million,” Latif explained in a statement on Tuesday (9/202022).
Latif added that Harita Nickel’s support for the Soligi community development and empowerment (PPM) program includes institutional formation and strengthening, provision of tofu and tempeh production equipment, technical training, production management, market access support, and demonstration plots for soybean cultivation.
“RUTE is focused on optimizing soybean-based products, ranging from tofu and tempeh to soy milk. This forms part of Harita Nickel’s One Village One Product (OVOP) strategy,” he continued.
Benefits for Soligi Village
“Harita Nickel will continue to fully support the community through well-targeted PPM programs. In the case of RUTE in Soligi, assistance includes skills development and ongoing guidance from production through to marketing,” added Stevi Thomas, Head of External Relations at Harita Nickel.
Rusman Baharudin, RUTE Coordinator, hopes the program will bring meaningful improvements to village livelihoods and continue to benefit the community in the long term.
“Through this program, the community has gained many positive things, especially in terms of skills and entrepreneurship,” Rusman said.
Meanwhile, Badri Bakhtiar, a representative of PT GDSK, noted that tofu and tempeh for catering operations are currently sourced from outside Obi Island, resulting in reduced freshness and quality by the time they arrive on site.
“We hope to begin collaborating with RUTE as soon as possible, and that the RUTE group will be able to supply high-quality tofu and tempeh,” Bakhtiar said. His statement was echoed by Ronny, representing the other catering vendor, PT Aden.

To Boost the Economy of Soligi Village, Harita Nickel Encourages Residents to Plant and Process Soybeans

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Indonesia is considered to be a substitute for nickel suppliers from Russia, which faltered due to the Russia-Ukraine war.
This is because Indonesia's nickel supply this year is expected to increase, particularly for the class 1 nickel metal produced by Russia, in the form of nickel matte, nickel sulphate, Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), and Mixed Sulphide Precipitate (MSP) whose metal content has reached 99.9%. This class 1 nickel product is usually used as a raw material for electric vehicle batteries.

This was revealed by Steven Brown, Independent Consultant in the Mining Industry based in Australia.

Steven said that the nickel metal produced by Russia is class 1 nickel and Russia is the largest supplier of class 1 nickel in the world.

According to him, Russia's nickel supply cannot be replaced by other countries, except Indonesia.

“Russia is the largest supplier of Class 1 Nickel in the world. It is impossible for other countries to close this supply, except for Indonesia," he told CNBC Indonesia, quoted Wednesday (09/03/2022).

“This year, Indonesia will increase its production of nickel matte and MHP, so that at the end of this year nickel prices may fall again,” he said.

He assessed that the nickel price, which had broken above US$ 100,000 per ton yesterday, was indeed not normal. He also estimates that the increase will only happen for a moment.

At the beginning of the year, he added, the nickel price for 2022 is estimated at an average of US$ 17,000 to US$ 23,000 per ton.

Based on Statista data, Indonesia produced 1 million tons of nickel in 2021. Indonesia is the largest nickel producer in the world, beating the Philippines and Russia.

Meanwhile, the Philippines produced 370 thousand tons and Russia 250 thousand tons of nickel in 2021.

Indonesia's nickel matte production in 2022 is planned to reach 83.9 thousand tons, up from 82.3 thousand tons in 2021, based on data from the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

One of the largest nickel matte producers in Indonesia is PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (INCO). Vale targets the production of nickel matte in 2022 to be around 65,000 tons.

In addition to nickel matte production, Indonesia has also produced MHP since last year. This MHP production uses High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology. MHP is a solid mixture of the hydroxides of nickel and cobalt. It is an intermediate product of the processing and refining of low-grade nickel before further processing into nickel sulphate and cobalt sulphate.

So, how many MHP smelter projects are currently in Indonesia? Here's the review.

1. MHP Smelter in North Maluku

The MHP smelter was officially inaugurated on June 23, 2021, by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan. Located on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku, this smelter is operated by PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, a subsidiary of the Harita Group.

The smelter's capacity is 365 thousand tons per year and is the basic raw material for electric vehicle battery components.

The US$ 1 billion smelter project or around Rp 14.4 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp 14,400 per US$) is the first electric vehicle battery component raw material factory to operate in Indonesia.

Currently, Harita is also developing advanced production facilities to produce nickel sulphate and cobalt sulphate, which are the main materials for electric vehicle batteries.

2. HPAL Smelter in Banten

In 2022, it is planned that there will be an additional new HPAL smelter that also produces MHP. Located in Banten, the company that operates the MHP smelter is PT Smelter Nickel Indonesia.

At the end of 2021, the construction progress reached 98.7% and is targeted to start operating in 2022. This means, there will be additional MHP production from Indonesia.

North Maluku Governor Proud of Harita Nickel’s Environmental Management

Harita Nickel in collaboration with the Khairun University (Unkhair) Ternate’s Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK), North Maluku, supports the conservation and rehabilitation of mangrove forests in several locations in South Halmahera Regency (Halsel). This collaboration is realized through the socialization and rehabilitation of mangrove forests in Awanggo Village, Bacan District, South Halmahera Regency.
The Socialization and mangrove planting activities take the theme 'Preserving Nature for the Sustainability of Civilization'. This activity coincides with the commemoration of National Nature Conservation Day which falls on August 10, 2022, where Harita Nickel and Unkhair target to plant 39 thousand mangrove seedlings this year. The activity was attended by the President Director of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada, Donald J. Hermanus, the Regent and Deputy Regent of South Halmahera, Usman Sidik and Hasan Ali Bassam Kasuba, the Dean of FPIK Unkhair, Dr. M. Janib Achmad, S.PI., M.Sc, as well as a number of officials for the South Halmahera Forkopimda.

The restoration of mangrove forests in the coastal areas of villages in South Sulawesi is one of the routine programs carried out by Harita Nickel in collaboration with Unkhair Ternate. This activity actively involves village heads and residents living around the coastal area to build a good mangrove ecosystem.

Harita Nickel and Unkhair also formed a Mangrove Care Group in each village which will play a role in the process of maintaining, monitoring, and managing mangrove forests in the future. Mangrove seedlings are planted around the coast of Belang-Belang Village and Awanggo Village which are considered vulnerable to soil erosion. The activity involved dozens of villagers who helped make this mangrove forest rehabilitation event a success.

"The President Director of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada, Donald J. Hermanus told TIMES Indonesia, Thursday (11/8/2022), stating that Harita Nickel views the rehabilitation of mangrove forests as very important, considering that mangroves can absorb CO2 and contribute greatly to increasing the biodiversity of marine life," he said. This concern and high commitment to the environment also moved Harita Nickel to cooperate with FPIK Unkhair Ternate.

“Since last year with Unkhair, we have planted more than 8 thousand mangrove seedlings in an area of 6.5 hectares, in Soligi Village, Obi District, South Halmahera. This year we are again showing our commitment to protecting coastal ecosystems by rehabilitating mangrove forests in several locations”, said Donald. Donald explained that this year’s mangrove forest rehabilitation activities were carried out in four villages, namely Guruapin Village in Kayoa District, Belang-Belang Village and Awanggo Village in Bacan District, and Soligi Village on Obi Island. The total number of mangrove seedlings planted this year is more than 39 thousand seedlings.

So that in the past two years, Harita Nickel and Unkhair have targeted to rehabilitate mangrove forests in South Halmahera by planting more than 47 thousand seedlings in an area of 20 hectares. Donald expressed his highest appreciation to Unkhair, the youth members of the Mangrove Care Group, and their coaches who have diligently cared for and maintained the sustainability of the rehabilitated mangrove forest for the past year and will continue for the following years. According to him, community involvement and capacity building related to mangroves like this are the main keys to this success, so that not only mangrove seedlings grow well, but the public’s caring, awareness, and knowledge about the important role of mangrove forests in life. Separately, the Regent of South Halmahera, Usman Sidik, expressed his appreciation for the role of Harita Nickel and FPIK Khairun University (Unkhair) who actively carried out socialization in increasing awareness of the surrounding community on the importance of the role of mangroves for the coastal environment. "We should be grateful and give great appreciation to Harita for helping the government nationally, not only regional governments, in terms of socializing this mangrove rehabilitation, because mangroves are very important for our lives going forward," said Usman.

He also appreciated Harita's initiative to rehabilitate mangroves not only in its operational area on Obi Island but also in several locations in South Halmahera. "It's really amazing, Harita even formed a mangrove care group and financed the planting and monitoring of the growth and development of the mangrove, and the impact on the community was extraordinary.”

Usman also hopes that Harita Nickel and Unkhair students can continue to synergize with the local government to help increase capacity and build community capabilities in empowering mangrove forests. In the same place, the Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences Unkhair, M. Janib Achmad stated that community-based rehabilitation of mangrove forests and empowerment of coastal communities is one solution to maintain the sustainability of mangrove ecosystems in coastal areas. According to Janib, mangroves have many benefits for the environment around the coast. "One mangrove leaf can attract 5 to 7 times blue carbon compared to ordinary leaves and on the other hand, mangroves are also a place of shelter and breeding for marine biota around the coast," he explained.

He continued, mangrove forests rehabilitation activities such as those carried out by Unkhair Ternate and Harita Nickel are expected to provide a source of livelihood for the community through the wealth of marine life that is increasingly maintained.

Harita Nickel and Ternate’s UNKHAIR Support Mangrove Forest Rehabilitation Efforts in South Halmahera

Donald J. Hermanus stated that the construction of the Obi Subdistrict office which was fully funded by Harita Nickel was a form of Harita Nickel's support for the South Halmahera Regional Government to improve services to the community.

"We hope that with the adequate infrastructure, it will be able to support the performance of the Obi District government in terms of administrative services to the people on Obi Island so that it will be even better," said Donald.

Donald added, that in addition to being a center for administrative services for the community, the Obi District office is also expected to become a center for community development and empowerment (PPM). "Hopefully with the presence of this new office, various innovations will be born to bring the people in Obi District to more prosperous," said Donald.

On that occasion, Donald also expressed his gratitude to the Regent of South Halmahera and his staff who continue to build synergy with Harita Nickel. "Especially in South Halmahera Regency, Harita Nickel will also provide marine ambulance assistance for Obi General Hospital, garbage trucks, normalization of the Jikotamo River, and many other economic development programs," said Donald.
Meanwhile, the Regent of South Halmahera, Usman Sidik, expressed his high appreciation to Harita Nickel for its contribution by fully financing the construction of the Obi District office building. According to Usman, with a very small Regional Original Income (PAD), the assistance for the construction of the Obi Subdistrict office building means a lot to the South Halmahera Regional Government.

“I am very grateful to Harita Nickel who has helped reduce the burden on the South Halmahera Regional Government. And this is of immense help to us. Harita is extraordinary," said Usman.

Usman also invited the residents of Obi Island to take care of what Harita had donated. "Let's take care of what Harita has donated. It's been amazing. Even if this doesn't happen, it's okay, because Harita's obligations to the country have been fulfilled. But because of the good relationship between the South Halmahera Government and Harita, we are grateful that Harita has given great attention to the community," said Usman.
