In celebration of Indonesia's 79th Independence Day, Harita Nickel, through its business unit PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), organized a Fun Walk on Sunday, August 4, 2024. The event, held at the PT HPL Living Quarter, was open to all employees and is part of the company’s annual initiative to mark Independence Day while strengthening team cohesion and fostering a sense of national pride among staff.
The Fun Walk, which commenced at 6:00 AM local time, saw enthusiastic participation from hundreds of PT HPL employees across various departments. The route covered the Living Quarter area, offering scenic views of Obi Island’s natural landscape.
In addition to the Fun Walk, the company hosted a series of activities to further energize the Sunday morning event. These included a health exercise session and traditional games such as a cracker-eating contest and marble races. The festivities were lively and competitive, with the crowd cheering for their colleagues.
"The event was a lot of fun! Even though this isn’t my first time participating in such company activities, it always feels enjoyable," said Agretia Griani Tiara, one of the enthusiastic Fun Walk participants.

Earlier, on Sunday, July 21, 2024, another Harita Nickel business unit, PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), hosted a similar event, attended by hundreds of PT MSP employees, underscoring the company’s commitment to fostering team spirit and celebrating the essence of independence.

In addition, various traditional and unique competitions, such as Dump Truck (DT) pulling contests, kite festivals, and poco-poco dances, were held across Harita Nickel's business units operating on Obi Island.

Harita Nickel Celebrates Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day with Fun Walk at Its Operational Site

Nickel is a transition element with a mixture of iron and non-iron properties. It is highly conductive and, in addition to being very strong, is also malleable. As a result, there are many potential uses and various benefits of nickel to found in our daily lives.
Data from nickelinstitute.org reveals that around 29 percent of all nickel supply is used for consumables and food processing, a further 25 percent is used in mobility and transportation, 14 percent supports the processing industry, 12 percent is utilized in construction, 12 percent is used in energy, and the remaining 8 percent is allocated to other uses.
But exactly how is this nickel used? Below are just some of the many benefits of nickel in daily life.

1. Kitchen Equipment and Electronics

Nickel is flexible, heat resistant, and will not disintegrate when cleaned. In addition, its silvery white appearance also makes it visually attractive. As a result, nickel is widely used in combination with other metals – such as stainless steel – in a range of kitchenware, cooking utensils, and even medical equipment.
In addition, nickel alloys are able to conduct electricity, can be easily magnetized, and are resistant to corrosion. This makes them an extremely useful material in the electronics industry.

2. Factories

Processed products such as fertilizers, plastics, and pharmaceuticals are produced in corrosive, gas-filled, and high-temperature environments. Therefore, nickel-alloyed metals are highly favored, because they provide solutions to these challenges.

3. Architecture and Construction

Nickel's rust-resistant and malleable properties are well-suited to a range of purposes, including architecture and construction.
For example, in infrastructure development projects, nickel-alloyed metals such as stainless steel are often used as load-bearing components in bridges. In addition, stainless steel is also used to make complementary road infrastructure such as barriers and handrails.
Stainless steel is also commonly utilized in commercial buildings as window frames, balcony supports, and building facades.

4. The Energy Sector

Nickel alloys are now also widely used in the energy sector, from oil and gas to power plants, and the new renewable energies industry.

a. Oil and Gas

In the oil and gas industry, materials with nickel alloys are widely used in piping components, valves, and vessels, etc. This is because nickel alloys are especially resistant to corrosion.

b. Power Plants

Power plants work by ‘cooking’ fuel to produce steam that will turn a turbine. Therefore, heat- and corrosion-resistant materials are needed to ensure the durability of components in boilers and heat exchangers.

c. New and Renewable Energy

Hydroelectric and wind power plants are often located at sea, which means corrosion poses a major challenge. Stainless steel and copper-nickel alloys are used to overcome this problem.
In solar power plants, materials with nickel alloys are used to capture and conduct heat that can be processed into electricity.

5. Batteries in Electric Vehicles

Another of the key benefits of nickel can be found in electric vehicles (EV), specifically as the cathodes in EV batteries.
Nickel is used for this purpose due to its ability to store comparatively more energy than other materials commonly used in batteries, such as lead. This makes it ideally suited to EV batteries, which require large amounts of energy.

Mining and Processing at Harita Nickel

Nickel is a raw material with many strategic applications, both now and in the future. At Harita Nickel, we not only mine nickel but also process nickel ore into derivative products.
Harita Nickel has a Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) smelter facility that is capable of processing high-grade nickel ore (saprolite) into ferronickel, which can later be processed into stainless steel.
In addition, Harita Nickel also has a High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) facility to process low-grade nickel ore (limonite) into Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), nickel sulfate, and cobalt sulfate. These three products are the raw materials used to make cathodes in the batteries of electric vehicles.

The Various Uses and Benefits of Nickel in Daily Life

Family plays an important role in reducing the rate of workplace accidents. In line with this fact, PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk or Harita Nickel, invites employees' families to be actively involved in managing the risk of fatigue for their family member who works in the company.
Recently, the Occupational Health, Safety, and Training (OHST) Department, in collaboration with the External Relations Department, provided education and counseling to the wives and families of local employees about the risks of fatigue that can lead to work accidents.
Risda Putri Ayudya, Management System Engineer at the OHST Department, said the event involving employees' families is part of the Off The Job Safety program. She continued that this activity is also part of the company's commitment to implementing occupational health and safety (OHS) policies in its operational areas.
“The role of the family is very important in controlling occupational accidents. In this event, we invite local employees' family who live around the company to participate in fatigue management. This is primarily related to the need for workers to rest at home both physically and mentally,” Risda explained.

Management Walkthrough: Synergy to Improve Operational Excellence at Harita Nickel

The 79th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia is a momentum for all Harita employees to reflect on the company's Core Values in order to contribute in materializing the vision of an Advanced Indonesia in 2045.
Harita Nickel's Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Director, Tonny Gultom, in his speech at the ceremony on August 17, 2024 conveyed the journey of Harita Nickel that stated as a mining company has now transformed into an integrated and sustainable nickel processing technology company.
Tonny said that from the seven pillars in this year's independence theme “Nusantara Baru, Indonesia Maju”, four of them are relevant to Harita Nickel's operational activities on Obi Island, namely economic growth, sustainability, green economy, and unity and hope.
Regarding economic growth, he explained, Harita Nickel through PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) and PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) continues to produce nickel processing materials, which are needed for the advancement of world civilization.
In terms of environmental sustainability, Harita Nickel's post-mining reclamation program has a large target of 30 hectares by this year. The company has also started an initiative named “Good Start from Obi” as an effort to reduce single-use plastic waste in its operational areas.
“This is an extraordinary achievement. Whereas about 10 years ago, we only focused on the nickel mining sector. However, today we are able to process nickel mining products, and even open up wider employment opportunities for local people in North Maluku,” he said.
According to Tonny, the company's success in carrying out the downstream mandate from the Indonesian government is due to the solid cooperation between all stakeholders. Especially the employees across various business units of Harita Nickel and its partners.
The key to that success, Tonny emphasized, is because every individual in Harita Nickel is convinced and believes in the company's Core Values and makes it a shared culture in their workplace, which are Humility, Achievement oriented, Respect for every individual, Integrity and Accountability.
“We can make all these achievements, inseparable from the role of every Insan Harita, who practiced all the Corporate Core Values in their daily work and contributed to Indonesia. Let's continue this good culture, and one Harita moving forward toward Golden Indonesia,” Tonny said, closing the ceremony.
Primus Priyanto, Head of Mining Engineering at PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP), presided over the flag-raising ceremony held at the PT TBP site.

In line, the Head of Mining Engineering of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, Primus Priyanto, encouraged all Harita employees to consistently apply the company's core values in their daily work. According to him, this is an effort to realize the company's vision and mission in contributing to the nation.
“What can we contribute as Insan Harita in commemorating the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, of course by applying our company values. As we move the company forward, it is our collective effort to contribute towards an advanced Indonesia,” he concluded.
For information, Harita Nickel through its business units operating on Obi Island held a ceremony to commemorate the 79th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. In addition to being held on the ground, the ceremony was also held underwater around the company's operations by involving professional divers representing each business unit. This activity is to emphasize the company's commitment to sustainable operations.

79th Indonesian Independence Day, One Harita Moving Forward Towards Golden Indonesia

Many professionals start their careers with small steps, but not all manage to jump to higher steps quickly. Novianda, a young professional who began his journey as a Chinese translator at Harita Nickel, was among the lucky ones.
Novi's career journey began in 2019, when he joined PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, one of Harita Nickel's business units, as a translator in the Warehouse Department. His main duty is to ensure that communication between local and foreign workers goes smoothly. With a strong background in Chinese, Novi is a valuable asset for the company.
“I initially found this position as an opportunity to gain work experience. But then I realized that there are lot things to learn and develop here,” he revealed.
Novi's performance did not go unnoticed by his superiors and the company. A year later, he gained new responsibilities as a Foreman in his department. According to him, his role transition from Translator to Foreman was not without challenges. From administrative work, he began to get involved in leading a small team in the field.
“I have to learn a lot about team management and day-to-day operations. Fortunately, since becoming a translator, I am also required to be able to support operational activities,” he said.

Previous experience involved in warehouse operations is an advantage for him. With a high dedication and commitment, Novi managed to show effective leadership and ensure efficient operations. As a result, his career continued to climb. After two years as Foreman, he has now been promoted to Supervisor. In his new position, Novi is responsible for broader operations and leads a larger team. Unmitigated, the total personnel in his team reached 200 people. It consisted of a foreman, translator and administrative staff, to operators and crew.
“We support from general goods, office stationery, tools to production spare parts. We have operators and crews for loading and unloading of goods from the jetty,” he explained.
With the demands of high operational needs, Novi's current responsibilities are not light and of course, there are also many challenges. He pointed out, that when there are large-scale maintenance activities, not infrequently there is a need for procurement of goods that were not planned. Whereas ideally, ordering goods must be at least two months in advance, since Obi is far from urban access. To get around this, he must find alternatives so that operations are not hampered.
He explained that his team conducts stock opname periodically to control the entry and exit of goods and their use. It is also supported by a special application connected to the relevant department, and the report can be accessed online headquarters.
“I was able to achieve this position, of course also thanks to the support of the team and the management,” he stressed.
He also told his experience working in a multicultural environment as well as his impressions of working at Harita Nickel for approximately 5 years. “It's great to be part of Harita Nickel since I can learn a lot of things here, one of which is how to lead a team with many personnel from different cultural backgrounds,” he explained.
Novianda's career journey from a Translator Staff to a Warehouse Supervisor at Harita Nickel is clear proof that with good dedication, skill, and adaptability, people can achieve greater success.

“I hope Harita Nickel will continue to grow and have a positive impact on the local community, including all employees in the company,” he concluded.

Novianda's Career Journey From Translator Staff to Warehouse Supervisor

Harita Nickel, through its subsidiary, Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), has recently implemented a First Aid training program for its employees. This initiative aims to improve the skills and knowledge of employees when dealing with emergency situations.
The first aid training was attended by 15 employees from across departments within Harita Nickel's partnership business units with Lygend Resources. Participants learn various fundamental first aid techniques during the training, including wound care, bleeding control, burn treatment, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
In addition to basic medical skills, participants also gain insight into preventive measures against occupational accidents and occupational diseases. Through emergency response simulation, it is expected that employees can absorb the theory and at the same time apply it in their daily lives.
Junaidi Arief, HRGA Superintendent of PT HPL, said the company is committed to continuously improving safety standards in its work area. According to him, this is a mandate from Law No. 1 of 1970 on Occupational Safety and regulation of the Minister of manpower and Transmigration No. 03/Men /1982 on Occupational Health Services.
“We believe that investing in this training is an important step towards achieving these goals. With the skills acquired through this training, our employees will be better prepared and able to cope with emergency situations quickly and effectively,” he explained.
One of the participants, Ana Hoky, Fleet Management Foreman of PT Dharma Cipta Mulia, admitted that she was very lucky to join the program. In addition to basic medical skills, she also gained insight into preventive measures against work accidents and occupational diseases.
“The training method is not only theoretical but also practical. Through the emergency response simulation, we can easily absorb the material presented and this will be very useful in our daily work,” he said.
In addition to First Aid training, the company also implemented specialized training programs for Belt Conveyor and Boiler operators. This initiative aims to enhance employee competence in the safe operation and maintenance of equipment, while also providing official certification to recognize their skills. This approach supports the company’s commitment to improving safety standards and operational efficiency.

Fifty students from Gadjah Mada University’s (UGM) Community Service Program (KKN), in collaboration with Harita Nickel, initiated a healthy cooking contest in Madaong Village, Labuha, South Halmahera. Held at the Village Hall on August 10, 2024, the competition was especially unique as participants were required to utilize Labuha’s main natural resource, nutrient-rich tuna.
Women from six neighborhood associations in Madaong Village enthusiastically participated, competing to showcase their culinary skills and creativity. The dishes were judged based on their nutritional content, taste, and presentation.
This educational activity, presented in a fun and engaging way, increased awareness among the community, especially mothers, about the importance of nutrition for children's health. It also highlighted that local cuisine plays a vital role in preparing a smart generation for the future.
It is worth noting that 100 grams of tuna contain 24-30 grams of protein, which is essential for children's growth and development. Additionally, tuna is rich in Omega-3, which helps maintain immune function and supports brain development in children.
“Harita Nickel believes that by supporting initiatives like this, we are making a sustainable investment in the youth of North Maluku. We also recognize that we cannot move forward alone, and collaboration across institutions is necessary, as we’ve seen today,” said Joseph Sinaga, Corporate Affairs Superintendent of Harita Nickel, who attended the event and acted as one of the judges.
The Head of South Bacan Subdistrict, Nasrudin Hasan, expressed his gratitude to Harita Nickel and UGM for organizing the cooking competition, which aimed to reduce the stunting rate in the area. During the event, the winner of the contest was also honored with the title of Balanced Nutrition Ambassador.
“We appreciate that through this event, the potential of local resources and culinary wisdom can be preserved, and even contribute to reducing stunting in Madaong Village,” Nasrudin stated.
He also hopes that this collaboration will continue and expand to reach other villages.
In addition to the healthy cooking competition, the UGM KKN student group also distributed vitamins at the Integrated Health Service Post (Posyandu) in Madaong Village and provided iron supplements to female students in several schools in Labuha.
“In terms of health and social activities, we also assist Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in obtaining halal certification and passing Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) tests,” said Diah Ayu, a KKN participant from the Faculty of Animal Science.
“We also organized an Edufair aimed at inspiring the children of South Halmahera to pursue higher education. We look forward to welcoming you to UGM!” Diah Ayu concluded.

The event aimed to enhance the relationship between management and employees, fostering a harmonious work environment. Topan Prasetyo shared his insights during his speech at PT HJF, emphasizing that the Ramadan Safari embodies the "One Harita, One Story" tagline.
"The 'One Harita, One Story' motto holds significant meaning. Although we come from various business units and regions, we are united. This spirit must be at the core of our efforts to achieve our collective goals," he said. Topan also emphasized that the event is more than a routine iftar gathering; it serves as a valuable opportunity to strengthen connections among employees from diverse backgrounds, promote a cohesive work culture, and reinforce team unity.
"With twenty thousand employees at the Obi site, this is a considerable number. If we work together as one team and one family, we can maintain a supportive and collaborative environment," he concluded. The Ramadan Safari will be established as an annual event during the holy month, underscoring the company's commitment to positively impacting its employees, the community, and the environment in which it operates.

Enhance Management-Employee Relations, Harita Nickel Holds Ramadan Safari Across All Its Business Units

That morning, the sun rose behind the hills on both sides of Lake Karo in Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. Lake Karo, where Harita Nickel operates, has beautiful scenery. The 9.88-square-kilometer lake is surrounded by lush green trees.
Tonny H Gultom, Harita Nickel's Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), said that Lake Karo is essential for the company's operations. The lake provides 3 million cubic meters of water each month for the company's needs. Therefore, protecting Lake Karo is very important.
"If Lake Karo has problems, our projects will be affected too. That's why I encourage everyone to plant trees with a positive attitude. I hope our sincere efforts help the trees grow well and keep the lake safe," he said during the opening of Indonesia's Tree Planting Day (HMPI) event near Lake Karo recently.Tonny highlighted that tree planting is a strategic initiative in preserving Lake Karo and carries significant meaning for Harita Nickel. This effort goes beyond the company's compliance with reforestation requirements in unused areas. More importantly, Lake Karo is a critical resource for the company's operational sustainability. Alongside reforestation, the company also conducts regular water quality monitoring to ensure compliance with government standards.
Furthermore, Tonny emphasized that the responsibility to maintain Lake Karo's ecosystem is shared by all stakeholders, including the government, local communities, and spiritual leaders. All parties expect the company to continue its conservation efforts. "This is not merely a ceremonial activity. Our focus is on the continued rehabilitation of previously utilized land. Additionally, it is essential that we commit to nurturing the planted areas to ensure their long-term viability," Tonny stated.
During the event, a board expert from the Indonesian Mining Experts Association (Perhapi), recently appointed as the first ASEAN Engineer by the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) and the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO), discussed the evolving role of North Maluku. Once renowned for its spice exports, North Maluku is now the fastest-growing province in Indonesia, thanks to the nickel downstream industry.
