Harita Nickel’s mining and nickel ore processing operations are deeply committed to environmental safety, particularly in ensuring that the water discharged from mining areas poses no threat to the surrounding ecosystems. Given that the company’s operational areas border vital aquatic zones, which are home to diverse marine life and crucial to the livelihoods of local fishermen, this commitment takes on added urgency.
To protect the quality of water leaving the mine, the company has created 52 settling ponds across two mining licenses. Thirty-five of these ponds are managed by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada, and the other seventeen by PT Gane Permai Sentosa. The largest pond, Tuguraci 2, has a capacity of 924,000 cubic meters and covers an area of 43 hectares.

Muhamad Riftadi Hidayat, a Senior Mine Hydrology Engineer at PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, highlights the importance of settling ponds in capturing sediment from soil, rock, and other materials eroded by mining. If not managed, these particles could pollute the environment. “These ponds are essential for keeping the water clean and safe before it's released back into the waterways,” he says.

The settling ponds are carefully designed to allow water to effectively filter out sediment before it is returned to its natural flow. This process ensures that the discharged water is clear and meets strict government quality standards.

At Harita Nickel, managing the settling ponds involves monitoring water quality parameters like pH and Total Suspended Solids (TSS). Dedicated teams from various business units perform daily checks to ensure they meet strict environmental standards.

Indra Maizar, Environmental Superintendent at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend, explains the importance of regular maintenance. The company regularly dredges the ponds when sediment builds up to 70 percent of their capacity. “When sediment reaches 80 percent, we use heavy machinery to deepen the pond,” Indra says.

Dredging prevents sediment buildup from reducing capacity and keeps the water clear before it flows into places like the Todoku River. “Pond Tuguraci 2 can handle water flow rates of 10,000 to 50,000 cubic meters per hour, even during heavy rain,” he adds. The pond also has a retention time of 10 to 15 hours, which helps ensure that upstream water is clear before being released.

“These ponds clearly show the company’s commitment to protecting the environment around the mine,” Indra says. “They also reflect one of Harita Nickel’s core values: teamwork. All business units will keep working toward sustainability and environmental conservation in our operational areas.”

Collaborating for a Greener Future: Harita Nickel's Water Management Initiative

Operating along the coastal stretch of Obi Island in North Maluku, Harita Nickel has been recognized with a Green Rating by CNBC Indonesia, a testament to the company's long-term commitment to preserving both marine and terrestrial ecosystems surrounding its nickel mining operations.
Since 2010, Harita Nickel has routinely monitored water quality near Kawasi Village, which borders the company’s industrial zone. Independent studies conducted by the Bogor Agricultural Institute and Khairun University in Ternate confirm that seawater in the area remains healthy and capable of sustaining marine life. “Obi waters are fertile due to high chlorophyll content. Marine productivity remains intact,” said Prof. Dr. M. Janib Achmad of Khairun University. Similarly, Prof. Dr. Inneke Rumengan of Sam Ratulangi University observed stable marine biodiversity from 2015 through 2021.

To ensure oceanic health, Harita Nickel has invested in an array of monitoring technologies including survey vessels, CTD sensors, multiparameter gauges, and remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), essential tools for accessing aquatic zones beyond the reach of divers. The company has also developed artificial coral reefs made from nickel slag, aimed at enhancing fish populations and bolstering the livelihoods of local fishermen.

Harita Nickel employees conduct marine ecosystem monitoring in the sea around the company's operational area

“To date, we have deployed 1,696 artificial reef units around our operational waters. Marine environmental protection has always been our top priority,” said Windy Prayogo, Environmental Marine Compliance Manager at Harita Nickel.

Research from the two universities also identified key marine species such as thresher sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and the endangered Napoleon wrasse. Local fisherman Saidi Jouronga dismissed allegations of marine pollution in the area. “It’s not true that Kawasi waters are ‘dirty’ or lifeless. I was born here and fish here daily. There are still plenty of fish, and they’re biting,” he said.

On land, Harita Nickel monitors biodiversity across a 5,000-hectare mining area. In 2023 alone, the company documented more than 290 plant and animal species, including 29 endemic to the region. Notably, 30% of its industrial area has been designated as green space and wildlife corridors.

In recognition of these efforts, Harita Nickel received the Green Rating at CNBC Indonesia’s 2024 Green Economic Forum, an award honoring companies that integrate sustainability into operations, from energy efficiency and ecological conservation to environmentally friendly innovation. Harita Nickel Earns Green Ratings from CNBC Indonesia for Commitment to Land and Marine Conservation

South Halmahera - North Maluku, 13 May 2024 – PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL) or Harita Nickel, a sustainable integrated nickel mining and processing company operating on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku, held “Obi Fishing Tournament 2024” on Saturday-Sunday, May 11-12, 2024, in the waters of Soligi Village.
This fishing tournament has become a regular agenda of the company collaborating with communities in its operational circles to promote biodiversity in Obi waters. More lively than ever, this third year event was attended by 202 participants who were residents of Soligi Village and Kawasi Village.

Head of External Relations Harita Nickel, Latif Supriadi, said the company invites people to preserve Obi waters through this fishing tournament. Evidence of biodiversity in these waters is still maintained, he added, reflected in the abundant fish catches.

“The total catch in this tournament reached 105 kg. This number does not include fish under 6 kg that are not included in the assessment. The types of fish are also diverse. Again, this indicates the fish in the waters of Obi is still abundant, " he said.

Furthermore, Latif said that the implementation of this activity was thanks to collaboration of company with community and the government. In addition to raising public awareness to preserve nature, according to him, this activity also carries a mission to promote the waters of Soligi village as a marine tourism destination.

Tit for tat, the company's initiative received a warm welcome from the local government. Regent of South Halmahera, Hasan Ali Bassam Kasuba, who attended directly to open the tournament, said the company's collaboration with the community and local government is very positive to raise the potential of Obi Waters both as a national fish barn and as a tourism asset.

“Activities that have become a routine agenda of the company with this community, we will push into the regional and even national tourism promotion agenda. With wider echoes, the potential of the region will be increasingly lifted, and many invite tourists from outside the region,” he said.

Reportedly, the fishing tournament opened on Saturday (11/5/2024) at 18.00 WIT and closed on Sunday (12/5/2024) at 10.00 WIT. The opening was attended by the Regent of Halsel who released the participants from the beach as a sign of the start of the tournament. Together with the Regent, several heads of departments, including the Department of Tourism, Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and Department of Transportation, were present.

The participants will compete for prizes totaling Rp29 million.

As for the assessment, it uses a point system based on the type and weight of fish. For example, snapper fish weighing 6-9kg get 3.5 points, while grouper with the same weight range get 3.0 points. For fish weighing under 6 kg did not enter the rating.

Agustinus Nugroho with Grouper catches weighing 14.5 kg become the first winner and ruby snapper (bagong snapper) weighing 9.5 kg. 2nd place was won by Umar with Grouper catches weighing 13 kg and snapper weighing 8 kg. In third place Imran, with ruby snapper catch 8 kg and 8 kg snapper.

“I got the first fish an hour or two into the sea, and the second the next day. Both are not far from here, just a few hundred meters from the beach around Soligi, " said Agus.

The holding of the Obi Fishing Tournament 2024 in Soligi Village is a pride for local residents. The head of Soligi Village, Madiasi La Siriali, said he was happy that his village was appointed as the host. According to him, this activity is an opportunity for residents to stay in touch with companies and local governments and raise the potential of their villages.

Related to the development of local tourism potential, head of Halsel Tourism Office, Ali Hasan, said the waters of Soligi Village are one of the best underwater tourist spots in the area. This fishing tournament, he added, is the opening door for the sustainable development of marine tourism.

Halsel Regent Supports Harita Nickel's Initiative to Develop Soligi as a Marine Tourism Destination

TRIBUNNEWS.COM - Obi island waters are suspected to have been polluted with heavy metal waste. More specifically in the western waters of Obi island, where there are nickel mining activities. However, studies have revealed that fisheries productivity in waters which is administratively located in South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku, is still well maintained.
Several aquatic ecology survey teams that conducted surveys in the surrounding waters of Obi island confirmed their findings about productivity of the waters around Obi island.

The Napoleon team represented by Prof. Dr. Inneke Rumengan, said that fisheries productivity in Obi island waters, in terms of the diversity of reef fish, plankton and macrobenthos, indicates the condition of productive waters, typical of tropical waters in general. In 2015 to 2021, it showed a stable condition of the marine biota community, with no downward trend.

"Our team observed directly by diving, observing the fish species present there. From year to year, the trend is relatively the same. Referring to coral reef fish, there tends to be a slight increase, both in number and type in 2020-2021," said Prof. Inneke.

Based on the observations made by Inneke and her team, they found various variants of fish, both surface fish (pelagic) and bottom fish (demersal). She said that pelagic and demersal fishes from small to large sizes are still abundant in Obi Island waters.

She cited large pelagic fish species in Obi waters, such as cakalang (Katsuwonus pelamis), tongkol batik (Euthynnus affinis) and even larger tuna (Thunnus spp). While demersal fish for consumption, such as grouper (Serranidae), rat grouper (Cromileptes altivelis), and snapper (Lutjanus).

Inneke further explained that fisheries productivity is mainly supported by plankton. Plankton's position in the marine organism food chain is very strategic. As producers of organic materials needed by other organisms, plankton sustain the life of marine biology above them, including fish.

"Our data regarding plankton that we observe from year to year, in terms of abundance and biological index, shows that the water condition is quite productive. If there are many plankton, there will also be many prey organisms. And the plankton becomes fish food," explained Prof. Inneke, who also teaches Planktonology courses at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Sam Ratulangi University (Unsrat).

In that 6-year period, her team made periodic observations at 29 points. One of them is in the waters of Kawasi, which is located in the west of Obi Island. The results of his observations if averaged from year to year, fisheries productivity in Obi waters is still relatively the same.

Regarding the number of fishermen's fish catches, it usually varies from time to time, depending on fishing gear used and wind season, so it is not appropriate to be used as a benchmark to measure the productivity of a waters.

"If you look at the catch data, it is not necessarily like that, because what is there is not necessarily caught all. It depends on the season and the fishing gear used. So our research (related to fisheries potential in Obi, ed) is more accurate because we observe directly," he explained.

In addition to conducting direct research, her team also conducted survey research by interviewing fishermen in a number of villages on Obi Island. The information explored includes the types of fish caught, the equipment used, and what the fish is used for.

"Fishermen in Kawasi catch fish for their own consumption or hobby. Even if they have excess, they sell it to local traders. The number of fishermen has decreased because most of them have worked in the existing companies, "said Prof. Inneke, explaining the results of survey research conducted in Kawasi Village which is in the village around the Harita Nickel mine.

Another survey team led by Dr. M Janib Achmad, a marine expert from Khairun University (Unkhair) Ternate, also revealed that the Obi Island waters as a whole are fertile waters because they have abundant chlorophyll. Thanks to the maintained productivity, the local community still prefers to be fishermen.

" Obi's waters are fertile because the chlorophyll is abundant, so fishermen continue to be fishermen," explained Janib Achmad, who also serves as Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Unkhair.

The findings were illustrated in the study "Fish Basket Survey in Kawasi Village and Soligi Village, Obi Island" conducted by his team in 2022. The study results on surveys in two villages around the Harita Nickel mine explained that the distribution with the highest concentration of chlorophyll a was in the northern part of Obi Island, where the surface temperature was relatively warm and made Obi Island fishermen increase as well.

Arlindo Phenomenon in Obi Waters

Fisheries productivity in Obi waters is affected by oceanographic factors. These waters lie at the meeting point between the Pacific and Indian oceans. The meeting of the two large oceans is known as the Indonesian Throughflow (Arlindo). This statement was made by Prof. Denny Nugroho Sugianto, a marine expert at the Department of Oceanography, Diponegoro University Semarang.

Prof. Denny further explained the path of Arlindo in Obi waters. According to him, the Arlindo passes through the northern part of Obi through northern Bisa Island, western Obi, and southern part through southern Gamumu Island. This is what makes the productivity of Obi Island waters very high.

According to Prof. Denny, the productivity of Obi Island waters is reflected in the abundance of pelagic fish in the area. "The presence of these fish has a positive impact on fisheries productivity in Indonesia," he said.

"The primary productivity of a waters is closely related to oceanographic conditions that bring nutrients for phytoplankton growth near the sea surface, thus enriching the biomass in the area," said Prof. Denny, who has conducted research in Obi waters.

Furthermore, Arlindo is the movement of water masses from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean which has a positive impact on the waters it passes through. The meeting of the two oceans' currents becomes a medium for the migration of large pelagic fish, such as tuna and skipjack. These high-value pelagic fish will be found around the waters through which Arlindo passes.

However, utilizing adequate equipment is needed to access the abundance of fisheries productivity in the Arlindo route in Obi waters. Because Arlindo is offshore, it requires a supporting fleet and fishing equipment.

" If it is around the coast, it is utilized by small fishermen. But if we want to have a big potential, it's offshore. Eastern Indonesia is indeed a barn of fish, because of oceanographic processes," he said, advised that Obi's potential marine resources can continue to be preserved.

Local Fishermen Keep Fishing in Kawasi Waters

The marine experts' research results are confirmed by local fishermen in Kawasi Village. Saidi Jouronga (58 years old) said that Kawasi waters are still abundant in fish. He admitted that he is still fishing in waters surrounding the operations of Harita Nickel, a nickel mining and downstream company that has been operating since 2010.

"I only fish near here. From Kawasi to Akelamo. For bigger fish like tuna and skipjack, we have to go to midwater. But if I go too far to the sea, it's too deep and has big waves. I also have to consider my safety," he said.

Using traditional equipment such as fishing rods, he catches between 20-30 kilograms of fish every day. The types of fish also vary. From Giant Trevally or locals call it Bobara, Grouper, Red Snapper to squid. He sells his fish to local traders at prices ranging from IDR 40,000 to IDR 50,000 per kilogram.

"So if anyone says there are no fish in the Kawasi waters, or even if there are fish, they don't want to eat because the water is dirty, that's a big lie. I was born in Kawasi and still catch fish here to this day, so I understand exactly," said Saidi.

Hut Ibrahim (60), a resident of Kawasi Village who also a fisherman, admitted that he is still fishing in Kawasi waters. Like Saidi, Ibrahim fishes using traditional gear. He used the money from fishing to pay for his daily needs and his children's school fees.

3 Marine Experts and Obi Fishermen Answer: Obi Island's Waters Productivity Remains Sustainable

Kawasi Spring plays a vital role in meeting the clean water needs of local residents. It is located in one of the small valleys, precisely on the lower slope of the smelter building owned by Harita Nickel at the Obi Island Site. Despite being in the middle of industrial operations, Kawasi spring is still flowing and maintaining its quality.
To ensure the spring is safe as a source of raw water, Harita Nickel conducts periodic monitoring of a number of indicators such as pH levels, water temperature, turbidity to oxygen levels in water. As a result, all of these indicators meet quality standards.

Based on the latest results of testing water samples conducted by an independent laboratory, it was found that the pH is within safe limits (7.87), very low levels of Chromium Hexavalent (Cr-VI) (<0.005 mg/l), and adequate oxygen content.

Harita Nickel conducts periodic monitoring to ensure that the quality of Kawasi spring water is safe and uncontaminated.

Prof. Dr. M. Janib Achmad, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science at Khairun University, stated that test results indicate the water quality from the Kawasi spring is in reasonably good condition. "For various domestic uses, water should have a pH above 7—higher levels are even more favorable. Elevated acidity levels can promote algae growth," he explained.Meanwhile, according to him, if the Hexavalent Chromium (Cr-VI) is still low, it is very safe. Usually this Cr level is related to the soil layer because almost every soil contains chrome, if it exceeds the limit it is dangerous. “This spring water is still suitable for drinking, the community uses it in Kawasi, but indeed the community often complains that there was sediment that covered the spring water,” he said.

One of the residents of Kawasi Village, Yolius Langkodi, confirmed that the Kawasi spring continues to be used by locals as a primary source of raw water.

"For our daily needs, we collect water from the Kawasi spring," he said.

Yolius explained that the spring has existed for a long time. In the past, people referred to it as air babunyi because its sound could be heard all the way to the settlement. Since the company's presence, he added, water from the Kawasi spring has been channeled through pipes directly to residents' homes.

"Access to clean water is now much more convenient. All residents draw their water from the Kawasi spring. This has been made possible thanks to the company’s efforts," he stated, while also urging Harita Nickel to continue protecting the Kawasi spring so that it remains a sustainable resource for the community.
Meanwhile, Harita Nickel's Health & Safety Environment Director, Tonny Gultom, said the company is committed to carrying out responsible integrated mining operations by addressing environmental and social aspects. This includes ensuring sustainability of the Kawasi spring which is currently used by residents for raw water sources and also other springs that are used for the company's operations, namely Lake Karo and Lake Loji.

“To maintain several vital water sources, the company carries out reclamation to rehabilitate post-mining land, plant trees along the watershed, conduct regular water quality monitoring and manage mine runoff water so that the released water does not pollute the environment,” he explained.
Watch Kawasi resident Yolius Langkodi share how the village spring brings clean, clear water straight to their homes in this video.

Kawasi Spring Preserved, Residents: Clean Water is at Hand

Eastern Indonesian waters, especially in Obi Island, are among the most productive waters in the world. This is because these waters are the meeting point between two large oceans, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean.
The meeting of the two large oceans is called the Indonesian Throughflow (ARLINDO). In Obi Island waters, ARLINDO passes through the northern part of Obi via the north of Bisa Island, the western part of Obi, and the southern part through the south of Gamumu Island. This allows the productivity of Obi Island waters to be very high.

The productivity of Obi Island's waters is indicated by the number of pelagic fish—a group of fish that reside in the surface layer of water—in the area. The presence of these fish, according to a lecturer at Diponegoro University's Department of Oceanography, Prof. Dr. Denny Nugroho Sugianto, S.T., M.Si. has a positive impact on the sustainability of fisheries productivity in Indonesia.

"Primary fisheries productivity is closely related to oceanographic conditions that bring nutrients for phytoplankton growth near the sea surface, thus enriching the biomass in the area," he said.

"ARLINDO from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean will bring many benefits to Indonesia because of the high productivity of fisheries or waters. It will bring large pelagic fish species, and the pattern will be followed by tuna, skipjack, and other large fish. This has a positive impact on the sustainability or productivity of fisheries in Indonesia," he explained.

To maintain productivity, ensure fisheries sustainability, and prevent disruption of the marine ecosystem in Obi Island, Harita has made a number of environmental management efforts. These efforts include regulating activities at the port, such as rules for ships not to dispose of waste in the Obi water area, releasing ballast water from ships in waters far from the port, and placing anchors in designated areas. This program aims to ensure that environmental management is carried out in accordance with regulations and runs at its best.

Several marine monitoring programs were also conducted, including monitoring of seawater quality (physical and chemical parameters), marine sediment quality, and marine biota (plankton, benthos, coral reefs, and reef fish). The implementation of this program is supported by ocean monitoring vehicles and equipment with well-tested technology.

The marine monitoring vehicles and equipment consist of in-house survey vessels, seawater sampling equipment integrated with seawater column profile measuring instruments (Conductivity Temperature Depth - CTD meters) equipped with sensors measuring physical parameters of seawater, grab samplers, and Remotely Operated Vehicles - ROVs (underwater 'robots' to support marine management and monitoring programs, explore, and inspect underwater conditions directly).

Influenced by Oceanographic Factors

The productivity of Obi Island waters and its surroundings is strongly influenced by oceanographic factors, namely ARLINDO, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll-a concentration. This is in line with the statement of the Director of Health, Safety, and Environmental Trimegah Bangun Persada, Tonny H. Gultom. In his opinion, the primary productivity of water is closely related to oceanographic conditions.

Trimegah Bangun Persada is a National Strategic Project mandate holder that operates nickel mining and downstream projects in Obi Island, South Halmahera.

In line with Prof. Dr. Denny Nugroho Sugianto, S.T., M.Si, Tonny also said that the highest distribution and concentration of Chlorophyll-a in Obi Island are in the northern part, in addition to the distribution of warmer water surface temperature conditions in this part. This circumstance suggests that the waters in Obi Island's northern parts are more productive than the island's other water sections. For your information, Harita Nickel's operational area is in the western part of Obi Island.

Furthermore, the distribution of fishing businesses is also more concentrated in the northern part of Obi Island (north of Bisa Island) and the southern part of Obi Island (south of Gamumu Island). This condition corresponds with the presence of ARLINDO, warm surface water temperatures, and high water concentrations in these waters.

Despite many factors affecting the productivity of Obi Island's waters, Harita is committed to keeping Obi Island's waters undisturbed through various programs delivered by the company and third parties. This program is also coupled with other initiatives to mitigate impacts that may result from nickel mining and downstream operations.

Harita also implemented an artificial reef placement program in stages, starting with a target of 1,000 pieces using hollow concrete cubes. The placement of artificial reefs aims to enrich the local ecosystem, as good coral reef conditions will be able to maintain the lives of reef fish and other marine life, ultimately benefiting the local community.

Harita also performed mangrove rehabilitation in several villages in South Halmahera, including Soligi Village in Obi Island, Guruapin Village in Kayoa District, and Belang-belang Village and Awanggo Village in Bacan Subdistrict. Mangroves have been gradually planted in an area of 20 hectares with a total of 47 thousand seedlings.

The establishment of mangrove forest areas will help maintain the availability of fish resources in the sea, clean water, and fresh air. Mangroves are also well-recognized for their ability to prevent erosion and abrasion.

Is the Marine Biota in Obi Island Safe? This is What Oceanography Experts Say

Recent initiatives to promote the electric vehicle industry in the country have also raised the popularity of nickel-producing areas, as nickel is one of the raw materials for electric vehicle batteries. One of the nickel-producing areas is Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. However, it was recently hit by marine pollution issues allegedly due to nickel mining and downstream activities by Harita Nickel.
Harita Nickel is accused of polluting Obi Island waters due to its mining waste being dumped into the sea. We have confirmed that the company has always carried out its mining activities under the Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL) document since it commenced operations in Obi Island in 2010.

Under its two Mining Business Permits (IUP), Harita Nickel has started mining in an area of 5,523 ha in Obi Island since 2010. Prior to Harita Nickel's operations, this area had already been exposed to land due to past logging. Its operational area is also on red laterite soil in general, so regardless of mining activities, the soil is reddish brown when exposed to rain and may cause turbidity, both in the downstream area and the sea.
"Prior to land clearing, we conducted baseline studies, such as flora and fauna identification, as well as ecological studies in land and seawater areas. This is to identify the initial state so that there is environmental mitigation during operational activities, as well as efforts to conserve the biodiversity of flora and fauna and maintain the ecological conditions of waters from land to sea," said Tonny Gultom, HSE Director of Trimegah Bangun Persada, the company mandated by the National Strategic Project at Site Obi.
In performing mining activities, Harita Nickel applies a horizontal stripping mechanism, also referred to as an open cast method. Therefore, land excavation in mining activities is quite superficial, averaging around 10–20 meters.
"Our mining method is different from other mineral ores mining, including gold and copper. Nickel mining is generally done in laterite soil with low porosity, so the natural vegetation is not dense and the top soil containing nutrients is thin. Therefore, reclamation of mined land is carried out immediately without waiting for the mine to complete operations to regenerate the mined area and reduce erosion," Tonny added.

The company conducts regular water quality monitoring at several points in its work area
The company has actively involved community participation from the initial stage until the operation period, which includes delivering positive social, economic, and environmental benefits.
"We always perform our obligations properly. Environmental management and monitoring activities are routinely carried out and reported every 6 months to LHK and ESDM. They also directly verify the conditions on site," Tonny said.
Water management has also become Harita's special concern in performing nickel mining activities in Obi Island, including the construction of a sediment storage pond or Sediment Treatment Pond (STP) implemented with government licenses. The benefit of the pond is to manage mine runoff water from the rain so that it does not impact the surrounding environment. For the record, nickel mine runoff water is not acidic, unlike that from gold and coal mines.
"We made a Sediment Treatment Pond (STP), a sediment or mud collection pond. Nickel sludge cannot be filtered, but principally the energy is reduced. One of them is the zig-zag method. Thus, the mud carried by rainwater is deposited in the sediment pond. The monitoring results of mine runoff water are also routinely reported to the LHK every 3 months," Tonny said.
All of Harita Nickel's statements were also supported by a statement from the Environmental Investigator of the North Maluku Environmental Agency (DLH), Yusra Hi Noho. Yusra clarified the issue circulating that fish in Obi Island could not be consumed due to heavy metal contamination.
"That is not verified, especially for Harita Nickel, whose environmental management process is very good. They control mine runoff water through sediment pond points that are maintained and monitored. So to prove it (the issue of environmental and marine pollution in Obi Island) we are a bit difficult if it comes from Harita," said Yusra.
It should be noted that there is not only Harita Nickel operating in Obi Island, but there are other companies as well.
" At this point, we know that Harita Nickel performs environmental treatment and management for its waste under applicable government regulations and has proven its compliance. It all refers to legal environmental management standards," Yusra added.
As for the pH and TSS parameter test processing, Harita Nickel routinely carries it out every day. The company is also required to conduct monthly monitoring and analysis in accredited laboratories and report to the Environmental Agency every quarter. The monitoring results show that the company has met the quality standards in accordance with Minister of Environment Regulation No. 9 of 2006, concerning Wastewater Quality Standards for Businesses and/or Nickel Ore Mining.
"They tested all the parameters, and (all allegations) were not proven. Incidentally, I previously led the team that evaluated environmental management in the past years. Once we evaluate it, it is not proven at all," Yusra said.
Yusra also dismissed allegations that Harita had dumped tailings into the sea. The company has been granted a permit to place tailings on land by the Ministry of Environment; it is at the mined location.
"The tailings material is placed at the hole or strip mine. In other words, it is returned to nature, to the place where the material was originally mined. Therefore, dumping tailings into the sea is not true, it's a hoax," said Yusra.

Is It True that Harita Polluted Obi Island's Waters? Here Is the Fact

Jakarta, April 15, 2025 – PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL), also known as Harita Nickel, an integrated and sustainable nickel mining and processing company, has voluntarily submitted itself to undergo an audit process conducted by one of the world’s most rigorous independent assurance organizations, the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA). The audit, which began in October last year, is entering its second phase in April 2025. This marks the first time an integrated nickel mining and processing company in Asia has undertaken the IRMA audit process.
The IRMA-approved independent auditor in Indonesia, SCS Global Services (SCS), will assess whether the company, which operates in South Halmahera, North Maluku, has respected human rights, engaged with local communities, provided a safe, healthy, and supportive work environment, minimized environmental impacts, and contributed to a positive legacy. In total, more than 400 requirements under the IRMA Standard will be evaluated throughout the audit process. The assessment results will be published in a public audit report, released both locally and on the IRMA website.

“By volunteering to have its mining operations independently audited against the world’s most rigorous global mining standard, Harita Nickel is setting an unprecedented example of operational transparency in Indonesia’s mining sector," said Aimee Boulanger, Executive Director of IRMA, in a press release issued when Harita Nickel initiated the audit process.

The spirit of aligning national industry practices with global standards, as demonstrated by Harita Nickel, not only ensures long-term benefits for communities and the environment but also reflects the growing recognition of Indonesia’s nickel industry as being in line with the highest global compliance standards. This alignment is particularly important given nickel’s critical role in supporting the energy transition and the increasing global demand for responsibly sourced nickel.

Harita Nickel’s Director of Health, Safety and Environment, Tonny Gultom, stated, “This transparency demonstrates the Company’s commitment to implementing responsible and sustainable mining practices while also supporting the Indonesian government’s vision for a mining sector that is both environmentally and socially responsible and transparent.”

Since its inception, Harita Nickel has demonstrated a strong spirit of continuous improvement; using assurances and due diligence reports as some of the tools to identify areas for improvement where the company will take a phased approach towards improvement. Harita Nickel has also consistently aligned itself with globally recognized sustainability standards to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen stakeholder trust.

Before commencing its mining operations, Harita Nickel obtained a range of academic studies that serve as the foundation for its responsible operational practices. Among these are hydrological assessments and land-use planning studies, which form the basis for a comprehensive water management strategy—covering the responsible use, recycling, and distribution of water across all operational areas.

As the processing and refining of nickel ore intensifies, Harita Nickel’s environmental management practices have also evolved to meet higher standards. The Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF) has been implemented in former mining excavation areas, complete with a comprehensive water management system and testing procedures that significantly enhance tailings management safety and prevent water contamination risks.

Harita Nickel implements marine environmental management to monitor and protect marine ecosystems around the company’s activities. Management includes water quality, plankton, benthos, fish and coral as well as other indicators of marine environmental health.

Further, Tonny elaborated, "We have also initiated a landscape-based natural risk assessment in line with the recommendations of the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), to better understand and mitigate hydrological and ecological risks."

Commitment to international standards such as IRMA is not the only one adopted by Harita Nickel. The company has also initiated a compliance assessment process for responsible sourcing practices through the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) from the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI).

"The compliance status obtained from this audit confirms that Harita Nickel's risk management system has been implemented in accordance with applicable standards. The company will also release its 2024 Sustainability Report in early May, which highlights its performance and elaborates on priorities for improvement in the areas of environment, social, and governance (ESG) moving forward,” concluded Tonny in his press statement.

Academic and researcher at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences and the Center for Environment and Sustainability Science at Universitas Padjadjaran. He has over 15 years of experience in research and international collaboration in coastal ecosystems and sustainable environmental management.
After a journey of more than 24 hours, involving various modes of land, sea, and air transportation, we finally arrived on Obi Island. That night was the first time I had ever set foot on Obi Island — and my first visit to North Maluku.
One side of the island was brightly lit under the dark Maluku night sky. The bright lights came from the facilities of Harita Nickel’s mining operations. Besides mining, the company also processes nickel into ferronickel, nickel sulfate, and cobalt sulfate.

Large-scale mining operations, with all their processes, always raise concerns about serious environmental damage to the natural beauty of Indonesia, particularly in North Maluku.

That morning, we from Universitas Padjadjaran had the opportunity to directly observe the mining activities. Giant mining equipment had indeed altered the landscape on one side of Obi Island due to ongoing extraction. However, we also witnessed how post-mining sites were being reclaimed and reforested after operations concluded.

Open-pit mines raise another concern during periods of heavy rainfall: large volumes of water can carry sediment that impacts the waters of Obi Island, which are rich in coral reefs and fish resources vital to the local community.

To prevent and mitigate these concerns, large sedimentation ponds have been constructed to ensure that water and sediment are properly contained, and the processed water from mining can be reused. Additionally, nickel slag—leftover from the processing—has been successfully repurposed as building material and even used to create artificial reef formations that have become homes for marine life around the island.

We then moved on to the newly built settlement in Kawasi Village, developed for the people of Obi. The village includes school buildings. We saw cheerful schoolchildren in uniforms, just like kids across Indonesia.

On another side of the village, the company has built an agricultural demonstration center for the community, featuring various vegetable and fruit crops. In addition, several round ponds have been established to demonstrate tilapia fish farming. Livestock pens also complement this model area, forming an integrated agricultural zone that also produces organic fertilizer.
To conclude our visit to Obi Island, various environmental care initiatives were openly discussed among employees.

That evening, the discussion focused on plastic waste—as plastic pollution was identified as a potentially serious problem if not properly managed on Obi Island. All Insan Harita—as Harita Nickel employees are called—on Obi Island understand this as a shared issue that must be addressed together.

Though there are concerns, the story from Obi also brings hope. Hope that is carried by many individuals committed to ensuring the environment can be enjoyed and passed on to future generations of Obi.

Salam Harita—every visit brings a new story. We will return to Obi to write the next chapter.

Environmental Story from Obi Island
