Harita Nickel accepted the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Recognized Commitment 2023 award from the Investor Daily ESG Appreciation Night event in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024.
This award was presented to companies with strong commitment and engagement in sustainability within their operations.

"On behalf of Harita Nickel, I extend my gratitude to Investor Daily," stated Tonny Gultom, Harita Nickel's Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Director, following the event. "ESG is an integral part Harita Nickel's operations, encompassing our social, environmental, and governance activities," he added.

The award scoring was conducted by the Investor Daily research and development team in collaboration with an independent jury, namely Dr. Uun Sunarsih SE, M.SI., CSRS, CSRA, and Dr. Erna Lovita S.E., M.Si., Ak., C.A., CSRS., CSRA. The evaluation criteria included the ESG risk decomposition concept and the quality of the ESG report.

Tonny mentioned that Harita Nickel identified the importance of sustainability early in its production process. For instance, instead of discarding the extracted topsoil during the mining process, the company stored, processed, and reused it in the reclamation and revegetation process.

Additionally, Tonny highlighted that the smelting process (from nickel ore to ferronickel) generates significant production waste, known as the nickel slag. However, the company utilizes the residual production as filler for mine holes and also in brick production.

"Nickel slag is used in our factory's construction as it can serve as a substitute for sand,” Tonny explained.

Harita Nickel also implements an Occupational Safety and Health Management System (SMK3) for industrial workers and a Mining Safety Management System (SMKP) for mining workers.

Additionally, the company has obtained ISO 45001 certification, an international standard that specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (K3) management system.

"We can achieve optimum production when our workers can work safely," he concluded.

Harita Nickel was Awarded for Commitment in Sustainability

The integrated nickel processing technology company, Harita Nickel accepted the Indonesia Top Digital PR Award 2024 from Infobrand.id and TRAS N CO on Monday, 26 February 2024, in Jakarta. This award recognized Harita Nickel's efforts in utilizing digital PR to create a positive perception and image of the company.
"The Indonesia Top Digital PR Award is dedicated specifically to companies and brands that are adept in utilizing digital PR to communicate and engage with the public, creating positive perceptions of products and companies," said Infobrand CEO Susilowati Ningsih through her written statement.
The assessment was conducted from October to December 2023 on more than 900 listed companies and 500 non-listed companies from various industries in Indonesia. The three evaluation parameters were digital media aspect, digital sentiment aspect, and digital awareness aspect.
From these three aspects, Harita Nickel successfully achieved a score of 81.39%.
Susilowati explained that digital public relations play a significant role in the modern, digital era. Digital public relations utilize various digital platforms such as social media, websites and digital media to reach a wider public more effectively and efficiently.
Harita Nickel’s Digital and Social Media Manager, Yoan Jeaniti, expressed her gratitude for this recognition. According to her, this award served as a motivation for Harita Nickel to maximize the use of digital media to communicate with the audience.

"Thank you for this award. It serves as a motivation for Harita Nickel to continually evolve in using digital technology, such as websites and social media, for communication," said Yoan in a written statement on Monday, February 26th, 2024.

Furthermore, Yoan emphasized that Harita Nickel was committed to continuing to improve its performance in maintaining the company's reputation and image, especially in the digital age.

Harita Nickel Received Indonesia Top Digital PR Award 2024

It has been suggested that batteries made from lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) could erode the prospects of nickel, a commodity that is expected to become Indonesia's mainstay in the future. Cheaper prices, greater heat resistance, and non-flammability are the key factors. But what do nickel industry players think?
Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (Harita Nickel), Tonny H. Gultom is confident that nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC)-based batteries will remain a common feature of electric vehicles in the future. The reason for this being that nickel-based batteries can store more electrical energy and last longer. Moreover, nickel-based batteries are particularly resistant to fluctuations in climate.

"Nickel-based batteries are generally well-suited to use in electric cars, especially for users who need to drive long distances and in areas prone to significant changes in climate and temperature," says Tonny.

Tonny also explains that, while LFP-based batteries are already being used in various types of vehicles, this technology remains in its infancy. As the need arises for larger capacity and longer life battery technology, nickel batteries will be able to fulfil these requirements.

Nickel-based batteries also have a lower carbon footprint because they can be recycled. That makes this battery better aligned with sustainable development goals (SDGs). With that in mind, it stands to reason that the European Union is currently drafting regulations that will stipulate the use of recycled batteries as standard in electric vehicles.

“It is hoped that the use of nickel-based batteries can answer this challenge, because they can be recycled and used again in accordance with the principles of a circular economy,” stressed Tonny.

NCKL Optimism

The company with the issuer code NCKL remains optimistic about the future prospects of nickel. As Tonny explains, future demand for nickel will be supported by the need for stainless steel and electric vehicle batteries.

Tonny continues by adding that Ferronickel, which is a derivative product of high-grade nickel ore (saprolite), is still in demand among various sectors, including automotive, health, and household appliances. “Meanwhile, opportunities for low-grade nickel ore derivative products (limonite) in the form of mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), nickel sulfate, and cobalt sulfate as products for electric vehicle batteries are many and varied in the energy transition era,” said Tonny.

Tonny remains cognizant that challenging macroeconomic conditions and Indonesia's nickel productivity are affecting the world nickel market. Nevertheless, a new equilibrium will be found in future between demand, supply, and world nickel prices.

Tonny is optimistic that future improvements to global economic conditions will help boost demand for nickel derivative products and improve the prospects of the nickel industry as a whole. Consequently, current world nickel market conditions do not affect the company's production targets or investment plans.

“At this moment in time, we continue operating according to capacity and targets,” he concluded.

Will LFP Undermine the Prospects of Nickel-Based Batteries?

On February 10, 2024, Harita Nickel employees rejoiced in this festive occasion, embracing the richness of Chinese culture.
The Year of the Wooden Dragon celebration fostered unity and cultural harmony. Chinese New Year festivities were enjoyed throughout all business units, featuring collaborative activities with overseas Chinese workers. Vibrant red lanterns with gold accents embellished offices and canteens, enhancing the festive mood.

At PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), the Chinese New Year celebration took place at the Activity Center building. The event saw the participation of expats, translators, as well as representatives from management.

The events included Tuan Nian Fan, a communal meal symbolizing the familial bond among employees. The dragon dance performance thought to bring luck and prosperity, was uniquely performed by skilled local employees. Besides the Activity Center, the Dragon Dance was also showcased in various work areas of HPL that night.

The excitement of the event culminated in fireworks that lit up the sky of Obi Island. In this case, fireworks are not only entertainment, but also a symbol of glory and new hope for the New Year.

Meanwhile, Chinese New Year celebrations were also held in other Harita Nickel business lines, such as PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP) and PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), with nuances not much different from the celebrations at HPL.

The cultural diversity within the Harita community enriches Chinese New Year celebrations, highlighting the value of fostering inclusivity and harmony in the workplace. Harita Nickel recognizes that cultural differences, evident in the participation of both local and foreign workers, are not barriers but rather strengths that contribute to the company's progress.

Harita Nickel Wins 2 Awards at the 2023 E2S Award

Everyone at Harita Nickel is a leader in their respective workplaces. Both for oneself, and for others. Being a leader for ourselves, we are required to always carry out every activity according to the work procedures that apply in the company. While being a leader for others, we must be able to set an example through action. In this case, what we say is what we do.
That was a discussion in leadership training held by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) on Thursday, October 26, 2023, in Jikodolong meeting room. A total of 20 participants from various departments learned together about the ins and outs of leadership. From what are the duties and responsibilities of a leader, what tools are needed, various leadership models to decision-making techniques.
This activity is part of the human resource development program at Harita Nickel.

In the second session, guided by Ngainur Rofiek, participants practiced simulating the application of leadership styles. By understanding several leadership models, participants were expected to find the most appropriate leadership style for themselves. In this case, the most suitable with one's strengths and work environment.
So, what is the purpose of leadership training?

Ngainur Rofiek, one of the leadership training presenters, emphasized the need for each employee to apply company values in their workplace.

Ngainur Rofiek said this leadership training was aimed at enabling each employee to carry out their work according to the tasks assigned by the company's management. "All of us here are company employees. Whatever our position is, a good employee is one who carries out duties of the management and is able to be a role model for other employees," he explained.
"To what extent will PT TBP Tbk survive? As far as we as leaders are able to maintain company values," he said.

For information, leadership training is held by PT TBP in stages. In the third batch, the training was attended by supervisor and superintendent employees from several departments. From this activity, it is expected that all employees who have attended the training can become good leaders in their respective departments.[IC]

PT TBP Conducts Leadership Training to Boost Employee Performance

Insan Harita has a big event from September to October 2023. For the first time, we are holding an Olympics that is participated in by all business units at the Obi Site. This activity is organized to foster unity among business units through fair competition.
Carrying the theme "One Harita, One Story," the Harita Nickel Olympics 2023 serves as a platform to celebrate diversity, talent, and the spirit of struggle of each individual. The Walik Benjol bird, the Olympics' mascot, symbolizes Insan Harita's concern for preserving the surrounding environment, including the endemic fauna of Obi Island.
In essence, the message conveyed by this Olympics is that Insan Harita, spread across various departments in each business unit, is a unified force in realizing the company's mission of responsibly and sustainably carrying out the downstreaming mandate.
The Harita Nickel Olympics 2023 officially commenced on September 2 at the indoor badminton court, within the Living Quarter area of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL). The event will conclude on October 28 at the football field, within the office/yard area of PT Trimegah Bangun Persada (TBP) Nirwana. Currently, competitions are underway and will continue until October 24.
The competitions are divided into two categories, namely sports and arts. The sports category includes futsal, basketball, badminton, table tennis, volleyball, chess, and e-sports. Meanwhile, the arts category includes singing, photography, and videography competitions.
Most of these competitions were previously held in each business unit during the commemoration of Indonesia's 78th Independence Day in July-August 2023. For this Olympics, each business unit has sent their best delegations, three representatives for the sports category and four for the arts. They will compete for the overall champion title, determined by the accumulation of points from all branches of the competition.
What Insan Harita's said:
Fardiman Jamhal, the captain of Team Ewako from PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF), who emerged as the champion of the Mobile Legends e-sports competition, said the Olympics had many positive effects on the employees. Fardiman and his four team members admitted to finding entertainment and making new friends.
"This event is exceptional. Very positive and fun. Through this event, we have made new acquaintances from other business units," said Fardiman.
The BPJS-TK team from PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP) echoed similar sentiments. The runners-up in the e-sports competition expressed their excitement at being able to participate in the Olympics. According to them, this activity has become a platform for fostering camaraderie among fellow e-sports enthusiasts at Harita Nickel.
"We hope to hold this again in the future. So that everyone knows that Harita is big and we are one," replied the five members of the BPJS-TK team in unison.
The competitions were held at night, amidst the routine work of the Insan Harita. For those working in shifts, the schedule was adjusted according to the working hours of their respective departments. Thanks to this good cooperation and solidarity, everyone was motivated to make this first Olympic Games a success, whether as players, spectators or organizers. The captain of the HJF Jaya basketball team, Risal S. Awal, admitted that they did not prepare specifically. His team relied on collective practice, which they often did during their off-weeks or other opportunities. Risal and the team usually played basketball using the facilities provided by the company, as did other enthusiasts of various sports.
In addition to Mobile Legends and basketball, chess and futsal were also played. Currently, HJF leads the leaderboard with 19 points, followed by TBP and MSP with 6 points, and HPL at the bottom with 5 points. The positions could change as there are still many matches to be played.
The Olympic event became even more lively with the enthusiasm of the fans. This was revealed by Christoforus Nanda, the coordinator of the basketball competition held at HJF. It was mentioned that almost every game was always packed with spectators.
"Here we maintain sportsmanship and solidarity. This event is very positive as a platform for fostering relationships among employees from each BU. We introduce each BU to the other BUs with the slogan 'One Harita, One Story'," said Christo.
Agus Setiawan, the coordinator of the Mobile Legends competition held at the courtyard of the Activity Center within HPL's Living Quarter complex, echoed similar sentiments. Although not a physical sport, e-sports also attracted a crowd of spectators. They watched the battle between the two teams on the big screen.
The pride of being part of the Harita Nickel Olympics 2023 was expressed by Susanty Feronica Zees of MSP and Muhammad Risal of TBP. On the opening night of the Olympics, Santi and her band from MSP performed to entertain the crowd. Meanwhile, Risal, along with employee representatives from TBP, also helped liven up the opening event.
"We are grateful and proud to perform in front of friends from other BUs. The trust given to us has made us more enthusiastic about making music as a hobby in between work activities. In addition, the support from the company is significant," said Santi.
The vibrancy of the Olympics also became a hot topic on social media. Since the Olympics began, many Insan Harita seem to have shared photos and videos on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. Netizens praised the company for making it easier for employees to socialize and pursue hobbies amid their work routines.

Harita Nickel Olympics 2023: Uniting diversity through corporate competition

For the past three consecutive months, Harita Nickel has received awards for its consistent application of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles throughout its operations on Obi Island. The most recent award was presented by the Advocacy Consortium for Mining (KATAM) together with the North Maluku Association of Indonesian Mining Experts (PERHAPI) on the occasion of the 78th Mining and Energy Anniversary held in Ternate on Tuesday, October 10.

In the previous two months, similar awards were presented by two leading national media companies. Harita Nickel was honored with the Detikcom Awards 2023 in September 2023 for being an outstanding integrated nickel company in the field of CSR. In August, our company was also recognized as the recipient of the TrenAsia ESG Award 2023 for the smelter category titled "Action".
What did they say about Harita Nickel that made it deserving of the ESG Award?
"There are several concepts that we have observed working very well in the community, including the Community Entrepreneurship Unit program (Kawasi Unik), the Self-Reliance and Strengthening of Village Entrepreneurs (Gemar Papeda) movement, and the Pijar Obi program. Therefore, the community development and empowerment programs implemented by Harita Nickel are very measurable and directional, which is the main reason for us to award Harita Nickel," said Muhlis Ibrahim, coordinator of KATAM North Maluku.
Similarly, Detikcom also recognizes Harita Nickel for not only being committed to ESG principles, but also for consistently implementing them through its Integrated Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM), which consists of five pillars, namely health, education, economy, infrastructure, and socio-culture.
Detikcom also noted that Harita Nickel has made a significant contribution to economic growth in North Maluku. Citing data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the economic growth in North Maluku reached 22.94% in 2022, higher than the national average of 5.31%. The success of Harita Nickel is expected to inspire other companies to promote the acceleration and equal distribution of the national economy.
The awards given to our company were not given arbitrarily, but were based on judgments involving experts from various fields. For your information, the TrenAsia ESG Awards 2023 involved a panel of judges from the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo), the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), the National Governance Policy Committee (KNKG), the Institute for Sustainability & Agility, and the editorial board of TrenAsia.com.
These various awards once again reaffirm the recognition from various parties for Harita Nickel's commitment and consistency in implementing sustainable mining governance and nickel downstreaming. The company's efforts have been recognized as having a positive impact on the surrounding community and environment.

Hattrick! 3 Months in a Row Harita Nickel Receives ESG Award

We should be proud that Indonesian integrated downstream operated by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada, also known as Harita Nickel, has drawn attention from the world's mining industry players. They are curious about the massive development of nickel downstream in Indonesia. And Harita Nickel is the first company in Indonesia that has successfully processed low-grade nickel into electric vehicle battery materials.
This was revealed at the 26th World Mining Congress (WMC) held in Brisbane City, Australia on June 26-29, 2023. This 2-3 annual event, which has been organized for more than 60 years, was attended by mining experts and corporations from various countries. This year's congress theme is Resourcing Tomorrow, Creating Value for Society.

Tonny Gultom present his research entitiled High-pressure Acid Leach Nickel Refinery Project in Obi Island Indonesia- a Contirbution to Reduce Global Emission at concurent session WMC discussing about Development in smelting, refining and recycling.

Harita Nickel's presence in the forum as part of delegation of the Indonesian Mining Experts Association (Perhapi) to introduce Indonesian mining to international world.
HSE Director of Harita Nickel, Tonny H Gultom, as one of the speakers in a panel discussion session explained his research on Mixed Hydroxide Presipitate (MHP) products that have been produced by Harita Nickel which can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector.
According to Tonny, the most common questions asked by congress participants were related to developments in the nickel downstream industry and utilization of other minerals contained in nickel including its development plan.
"So many of them were curious about the rapid development of nickel downstream industry in Indonesia, and especially for Harita Nickel because it has successfully produced nickel derivative products up to Nickel Sulfate and the next Cobalt Sulfate," Tonny said.
From the presentation and discussion room, switch to the Exhibition Hall. There were dozens of booths from various delegations. One of them was Perhapi, where Harita Nickel joined in. Apparently this booth was no less exciting. Again, the downstreaming of nickel became the most asked topic by visitors.

Together with other Indonesian delegates who joined the Perhapi delegation at the World Mining Conference (WMC) in the city of Brisbane Australia which took place from June 26-29, 2023.

Tonny explained how the company, which initially only mined nickel, has now succeeded in building an integrated downstream. Where all operations from upstream to downstream are in one area, namely the Obi Industrial Estate. According to him, the concept of vertically integrated mining has many advantages.
Furthermore, the member of Perhapi's expert council said that integrated concepts also provide easy access to export processes. With this facility, products to be exported can be done directly through special terminal access that has obtained government permission.
"Because the mining site and the downstream industry of PT TBP Tbk has a special terminal which of course has received permission from the Government, the Customs and Excise officers at the location can do a direct calculation of the export value and tax calculation," Tonny added.
PT TBP Tbk's integrated mining also allows savings from the financing aspect, namely hauling and freighting costs. You can imagine, refineries or smelters that do not have ore supply around the factory, they have to bear the high cost of the transportation process which is quite large.
"With this integrated concept, in addition to providing certainty of nickel ore supply, it is also able to save transportation costs and minimize the carbon footprint left behind," said Tonny, that the integrated concept also contributes to reducing environmental impacts.
In the international congress, there were also a number of discussions on mining derivative products, especially nickel, in a sustainable supply chain value.
That's a little interesting story from Brisbane, being part of Harita Nickel's journey to build Indonesia from Obi Island.[]
