Integrated nickel mining and processing technology company, Harita Nickel, is committed to promoting access to quality education for children on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku. This effort aims to cultivate top-tier human resources in preparation for the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.
Harita Nickel's Head of External Relations, Latif Supriadi, said since its inception, the company has been committed to sustainable business practices by integrating responsible environmental and social governance. This commitment, he said, is outlined in the Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program which focuses on five aspects, including education, health, economy, infrastructure and socio-culture.
“Education as one of the five important pillars to build superior local resources, we strive to support access to quality education, especially for children in our operational areas. However, these kids are the future of Indonesia, who will carry on the development in their regions,” he said.
Latif further said that Harita Nickel's support in efforts to improve the quality of education for local communities is implemented by providing educational facilities and infrastructure. Most recently, he said, the company handed over computer laboratory equipment for SMA Tunas Muda and SMP Loji Permai Kawasi Village.
The equipment, which was handed over to mark the 2024 National Education Day, he said, complemented the company's support that had previously built school buildings for Kawasi Village residents, from pre-school to high school levels.
In addition to physical facilities, the company also implements various programs aimed at improving the quality of education. One of them is Harita Mengajar program through sending employees to teach Chinese, counseling on the dangers of drugs, socialization of Occupational Safety and Health (K3) to basic life support and fire prevention.
“To enrich their knowledge and boost their learning motivation, we also invite them to learn directly by visiting the company's integrated farming center. A few days ago, we invited elementary students to watch a movie about education in our movie theater,” Latif explained.
As Obi Island is away from urban access, some schools do not have enough teaching staff. To address this issue, the company supports incentives for auxiliary teachers to teach in a number of schools within its operational area.
“All of this is part of our commitment to support the government's program in producing excellent human resources, so that these local children can contribute to the development of their region,” he said.
The company's efforts to support improvement in the quality of education for local communities have been warmly welcomed.
Principal of Tunas Muda Kawasi High School, Obet Siar, expressed his appreciation for Harita Nickel's attention to school operations. According to him, the company's support is very important so that education quality on Obi Island can compete with other schools.
“Hopefully the company and the community can continue to work together to jointly improve the quality of education for our children,” he said.
For information, Tunas Muda High School and Loji Permai Junior High School have occupied new buildings that were constructed by Harita Nickel in the new settlement of Kawasi Village. With more equipped facilities, the students claimed to be more enthusiastic in learning. One of them expressed by Ikra Jouronga, 11th grade student of SMA Tunas Muda Kawasi Village.
“I'm happy, especially with the computer lab, so we can practice directly. Even though we are far from the city, we are not inferior to other schools out there,” he said. Welcoming Golden Indonesia 2045, Harita Nickel Promotes Quality Education for Children on Obi Island

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Nickel downstreaming has become a leading sector for North Maluku Province as the region with the highest economic growth rate in Indonesia in the last three years. Operating on Obi Island, South Halmahera, Harita Nickel, an integrated nickel mining and processing technology firm, has played a pivotal role in this achievement.
Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of North Maluku Province, Aidil Adha, highlighted the significant role of the nickel mining and processing industry in driving regional economic growth. He pointed out growth rates of 16.79% in 2021, 22.94% in 2022, and 20.49% in 2023. Additionally, the mining experienced the highest production growth at 49.07%, while exports took the lead in expenditures, comprising 28.67%. He stated this during a joint visit with BPS and Bank Indonesia (BI) to Harita Nickel's operational area.
Furthermore, Aidil highlighted Harita Nickel as a leading example of mining and downstream enterprises committed to sustainable business practices. From employing cutting-edge, eco-friendly production techniques to effectively managing social aspects, which have been proven to have a positive impact on the surrounding community.
Aidil was surprised that North Maluku's recent economic growth didn't involve Cobalt Sulphate (CoSO4), despite Harita Nickel's successful production of it in the latter half of 2023. With the introduction of this Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) derivative product, he expects even more growth for North Maluku's economy.
"We receive numerous inquiries about North Maluku Province's remarkable economic growth. People often question the data supporting such substantial progress. However, it seems this growth is set to continue, especially with the addition of another derivative product, Cobalt Sulfate, alongside Nickel Sulfate," he explained.

For information, Nickel Sulfate (NiSO4) and Cobalt Sulfate (CuSO4) are the two main components for making electric vehicle battery cathodes, which represent a newer, more environmentally friendly energy source.
Similarly, Hasiando Manik, Economist of Bank Indonesia South Sulawesi cited Harita Nickel as an ideal example of downstream practices benefiting both regional economic growth and local communities. He noted the company's ability to transform previously unused materials into valuable products as a significant asset for Harita Nickel.
"Harita Nickel has turned limonite, once considered low-value overburden, into valuable material for electric vehicle batteries. This aligns with good mining principles, specifically mineral conservation, and proves to be an efficient and profitable business strategy." he explained.

Contributions Outside the Mining Sector

Apart from visiting the smelter and refinery, the BI and BPS delegation also met with beneficiaries of the company's community development and empowerment program (PPM) on Obi Island. These include groups of farmers, fishermen, and MSMEs whohave received support from the company.
Despite its substantial contribution to regional economic growth, Aidil reminded that Harita Nickel could also help the government revive the agricultural and fisheries sectors, which local communities have started to neglect. He highlighted that people's welfare isn't solely determined by income but also by purchasing power, particularly concerning food commodities like rice, chilies, and tomatoes, which frequently experience price fluctuations leading to inflation.

The group visited a refinary plant that processes Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) intermediate products into Nickel Sulfate and Cobalt Sulfate as the main material for manufacturing electric vehicle battery cathodes.

"Although income may rise, increased demand for food may lead to higher prices as imports become necessary. However, I've noticed that Harita Nickel is diligently implementing empowerment programs in agriculture," he stated.
Tonny Gultom, Harita Nickel's Director of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), noted that their company, initially focused solely on mining, now operates a mineral processing industry aligned with the government's downstream policy. Heemphasized the substantial impact of this policy, which adds significant value to their operations.
"What we're witnessing today is the outcome of our efforts over the past five years. Initially, we only mined. Now, with down-streaming, our operational plans are more extensive and complex, offering greater added value to local and regional communities," he elaborated.
Harita Nickel is transforming it into the Obi Industrial Area, supported by obtained permits. Not only will production capacity increase, but they'll also push production further downstream. For instance, the ferronickel produced by the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) smelters will be processed into stainless steel in the future. On the environmental front, we plan to shift electricity sources from fossil fuels to renewable energy through Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant (Solar PV) in stages, starting this year. In the category of Most Sustainable Nickel Company, the CNBC Indonesia Awards 2023 were presented to PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL). This recognition is given as an appreciation to PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL) for its commitment to collaborating with the Indonesian government in achieving carbon emission reductions in line with global targets.
"We express our gratitude on behalf of the company, and I am confident that this will be a catalyst for us to work even better, to contribute even more to Indonesia. From Obi to Indonesia," said Roy Arfandy, the CEO of NCKL, during the CNBC Indonesia Awards 2023 on Wednesday (December 13, 2023).
It is well known that the effort to achieve carbon emission reduction is evident in NCKL's contribution to creating products that support clean and low carbon energy. The battery industry, which supports electric vehicles (EVs), is a fossil fuel free resource.
In addition, the use of electric vehicles reduces the carbon footprint caused by vehicle emissions. NCKL is also actively reducing the use of fossil fuels as an energy source for battery manufacturing processes.
One of the power plants used by NCKL is based on solar energy. As of September 2022, NCKL has used solar panels to power 149 lights at a site with a capacity of 250 kW-peak.
NCKL also reduced the consumption of fossil fuels used in transportation equipment by incorporating a 30% biodiesel blend, which is expected to become more prevalent as a substitute for coal. The company maximizes the use of clean energy by utilizing used cooking oil for power generation, thereby reducing energy consumption by 795 GigaJoules (GJ). The reduction in air emissions is also evident in the air quality, which now complies with WHO guidelines.
Furthermore, the company has significantly decreased its reliance on fossil fuels. According to NCKL's sustainability report, the energy intensity used decreased by 82.3% to 2.1 GJ/ton in 2022 compared to 11.9 GJ/ton in 2021.
Additionally, the reduction in air pollution is experienced by the residents of Obi Island through the development of a half-kilometer-long belt conveyor as a means of transporting production output. The utilization of this conveyor belt will decrease the use of heavy vehicles, thereby reducing the consumption of polluting fossil fuels.
Moreover, the dust produced by heavy vehicles will also decrease with the implementation of this system.
NCKL has also repurposed the by-products of the RKEF smelter process into artificial coral reefs, bricks, tetrapods, precast box culverts, and road coatings. Meanwhile, the residual products from the HPAL processing are reintegrated into former mining pits.
Furthermore, the widespread use of electric batteries has led to an increased demand for nickel. Despite this, NCKL is committed to developing the downstream nickel industry while maintaining a focus on environmental sustainability.
According to S&P Commodity Insight data, global nickel demand is expected to continue rising until 2027, with Indonesia's nickel contributing over 40%. This trend aligns with the world's commitment to shift towards electric vehicle batteries to reduce carbon emissions.

Sustainability Project: Downstream Nickel Through HPAL Smelters

TBP is also concentrating on the development of HPAL plants, which directly impact the electric vehicle battery industry. This project generates mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), a crucial component in the production of electric vehicle batteries.
The company's prospectus notes that the HPAL Phase I and II projects consist of two production lines for nickel-cobalt compounds. This project can be utilized to produce MHP, a key raw material for the cathode precursor of electric vehicle batteries.
The company continues its development of the HPAL smelter, anticipated to commence operations in 2024 with an estimated total production capacity of 61-66 thousand tons. Nevertheless, the company's nickel production provides an opportunity to boost ore sales volume to meet the increased production capacity.
It's noteworthy that the HPAL plant boasts advantages in energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions compared to RKEF technology. This will have a positive impact on the environment and address the growing demand for environmentally friendly batteries.

NCKL Receives Most Sustainable Nickel Company Award

Bisnis.com, NORTH MALUKU - PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL) or Harita Nickel continues to strive for effective and efficient energy usage in the company's nickel processing process.
Harita Nickel's Head of Technical Support, Rico Windy Albert, stated that an example of optimal energy usage in the company's production facilities has been implemented in one of its subsidiary's nickel smelters, namely PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF).
This smelter processes high grade nickel ore or saprolite into ferronickel using a pyrometallurgical processing system called the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF). Rico mentioned that to support the operation of this smelter, the company has 4 units of steam power plants, each generating 150 megawatts of electricity for a total of 600 megawatts.
"The energy generated by these steam power plants uses coal gasification, which makes the combustion cleaner," said Rico when interviewed by the EV Exploration team in Kawasi, Obi Island, North Maluku. He explained that the efficiency of energy use in the production process is achieved by applying a heat recovery system at each stage of ferronickel production.
He explained that the heat recovery system was implemented to effectively utilize all the energy generated by coal gasification in the steam power plant (PLTU).
He explained that the excess heat generated in the process of melting nickel ore in the electric furnace would be used in the previous production stage, namely calcination in the rotary kiln. Subsequently, the excess heat in the calcination process would also be used in the earlier stage of ferronickel production, namely the drying of nickel ore.
In addition, the HJF smelter has a water management system that can be reused in the production process. "We have a reservoir that collects rainwater and water from nickel processing; we pump it until it can be used in the smelter, so nothing is wasted," Rico said.
Separately, Harita Nickel's Environmental Superintendent, Indra Maizar, explained that the company has a specific water management system for the purposes of nickel production activities. Indra mentioned that Harita Nickel has two special ponds designed to collect rainwater and water from production activities at the smelter.
He explained that the rainwater collected in these ponds is pumped to the company's smelter facility for use in the production process. The wastewater from the production activities is then returned to another pond for storage. "This water is later pumped to the smelter for reuse in the nickel processing process," Indra said.

EV Exploration: Harita Nickel improves energy efficiency in production process

Environmental Commitment, Harita Nickel Plant Mangroves in Soligi Village

CNBC Indonesia - Superior processing technology developed by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL), or Harita Nickel, is helping North Maluku province's economic growth to become the highest in the country.
According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), North Maluku achieved the highest annual economic growth record in Indonesia at 23.89% in the second quarter of 2023.
One of the drivers of North Maluku's economic growth is the remarkable performance of the mining and excavation sector, which grew by 64% (yoy), followed by the manufacturing sector, which grew by 48.12% (yoy).
In terms of employment, mining excavation, and manufacturing cumulatively contributed more than 50% to the structure of North Maluku's gross regional domestic product (GRDP) in the second quarter of 2023.
On a quarterly basis, both industries experienced the highest growth in the business sector, with mining and excavation at 23.24%, followed by manufacturing at 15.71%.

The remarkable growth of GRDP in various business sectors (%QoQ)

Source: Central Statistical Office (BPS)

This impressive growth is certainly not without reason. Harita Nickel's role as one of the nickel players with integrated processing technology has contributed to the economic growth of North Maluku.
Harita Nickel operates nickel mines on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku Province. The mine has been in operation since 2007 and has been consistently transforming to advance nickel industrialization.
The company's nickel industrialization efforts began with the establishment of the first Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology smelter in 2017, which produces ferronickel as a raw material for stainless steel.
The value-added project for nickel, which will benefit Indonesia, particularly North Maluku, has been designated as a national strategic project for the Obi Island Industrial Zone in 2020.
The following year, Harita Nickel once again demonstrated its pioneering spirit in advancing the nickel industry by establishing a refinery to purify limonite nickel ore (low-grade nickel ore) using High-Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) technology. At that time, Harita Nickel's refinery produced an intermediate product, Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), consisting of nickel and cobalt.
The refinery using this technology was the first to operate in Indonesia, and the refined nickel is said to have a lower carbon footprint and is in matte form, making it easier for further processing.
In October 2022, Harita Nickel inaugurated its second RKEF smelter with a production capacity of 95,000 metric tons of nickel per year. This will bring the total number of ore processing and refining facilities operated by the state-owned company to three, using two different technologies, RKEF and HPAL.
Harita Nickel did not stop there. Eight months later, exactly at the end of June 2023, Harita Nickel successfully continued the industrialization of nickel by refining MHP into the next derivative product and made its first export for nickel sulfate (NiSO4). In July 2023, it successfully produced and made its first export for cobalt sulfate (CoSO4).
The success of nickel sulfate production once again makes Harita Nickel a pioneer in Indonesia and the world's largest nickel sulfate plant with a production capacity of up to 55,000 metric tons of nickel per year. This outstanding record positions Indonesia as an increasingly important player in the global electric vehicle battery industry.
The latest news is that the construction of RKEF's third smelter is underway and is expected to be officially commissioned in 2025. In addition, the second HPAL refinery will be accelerated to be operational by the middle of next year.
The rapid development of the plant in recent years has also increased the demand for labor in Indonesia and North Maluku.
Speaking of employment absorption, there are currently more than 20,000 employees at Harita Nickel, 85% of whom are Indonesian citizens and 50% of whom are from North Maluku.
This nickel industrialization initiative is also increasingly showing tangible results in the performance of North Maluku's nickel exports. In the first six months of this year, nickel export growth increased by 46.69% year-on-year to US$833.01 billion. In the same period, the volume also increased significantly from 105.99 billion kilograms to 157.79 kilograms, jumping by 48.86% YoY.
The attractive performance of nickel exports also supports North Maluku's trade balance, which remains in surplus at US$3.23 billion, despite a decline in the province's total export and import performance by 7.67% and 10.27% respectively compared to last May, according to data from BPS.

TRIBUNJABAR.ID, BANDUNG - A total of 300 students from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) attended a public lecture titled "Challenges in Nickel Mining and Environmental Sustainability: Learning from Obi Island" at the ITB East Lecture Building on Ganesa Street, Bandung, on Friday (10/10/2023).
Tonny Gultom, Director of Health Safety and Environment (HSE) at Harita Nickel, served as the speaker for the lecture, which was chaired by Dr. Muhammad Sonny Abfertiawan, S.T, M.T. from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at ITB.
Tonny Gultom was accompanied by Lesbon Sitorus, Solomon Willyarta, and Muhammad Galih Setia from Harita Nickel.
The public lecture was attended by ITB students from the Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering programs.
For Harita, this event is part of the "Harita Nickel Goes to Campus" series held at various universities in Indonesia.
During the lecture, it was revealed that Indonesia is the world's largest nickel producer with an estimated total production of 1.6 million metric tons, contributing 48.48 percent of the world's nickel production.
With such potential, Indonesia is emerging as a strategic player globally, aligning with the growing global demand for nickel, especially for industries such as electric vehicles and renewable energy.
As is well known, nickel plays a crucial role in supporting various aspects and has transformed the world's civilization. Nickel is an integral part of daily life as a component in stainless steel for household appliances, as a blend with iron and steel for construction materials in buildings and railroad tracks, and is used in batteries and other renewable energy technologies. This makes the potential of the nickel market increasingly attractive.
"Nickel is also becoming the most sought-after mineral in growing industries such as electric vehicles and renewable energy. The increasing awareness of society, especially the younger generation, towards environmental sustainability has garnered positive support for these efforts from various quarters," said Tonny Gultom.
According to him, Obi Island, where Harita Nickel operates, is an island of approximately 2,345 square kilometers in North Maluku Province and is one of the largest nickel mining sites in Indonesia.
Obi Industrial Zone has been designated as one of the National Strategic Projects (PSN) based on Presidential Regulation No. 109 of 2020 on the Third Amendment of Presidential Regulation No. 3 of 2016 on the Acceleration of the Implementation of National Strategic Projects.
The implementation of the PSN in the industrial zone will be carried out by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada in cooperation with tenants/associated companies that are already operational.
Nickel from Obi Island has played a crucial role in the world's new civilization. According to Tonny, Indonesia has learned a lot from Obi Island and hopes to develop nickel through the application of environmentally friendly technologies.
With the rapid development of environmentally friendly technologies, the presence of nickel is in high demand worldwide. The skills and dedication of the sons and daughters of the nation who work there represent the quality of Indonesia's human resources.

Mutual Needs

The Harita Nickel Goes to Campus event was well received by the ITB representative, Muhammad Sonny Abfertiawan.
According to Sonny, the presence of practitioners on campus is much needed to provide an overview of the real working world. Specifically on the topic of nickel, which will be discussed in this public lecture, he believes it is very relevant to current conditions.
"Students need to realize the importance of nickel in life. They can do a lot of research and innovation to optimize the benefits of nickel, which is one of Indonesia's leading mining resources according to the government's expectations in terms of downstream processing," Sonny said. In addition to technical issues in mining and its technology, students are also given an overview of careers in nickel companies.
