Harita Nickel Shares Knowledge with PERHAPI North Maluku

PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, also known as Harita Nickel, an integrated and sustainable nickel mining and processing company operating on Obi Island, South Halmahera, North Maluku, participated in a knowledge sharing event with the Indonesian Mining Experts Association (PERHAPI) of North Maluku Province. The is part of the series of activities for the VI Regional Conference (Musda) of PERHAPI North Maluku and was attended by mining engineering students from Khairun University (Unkhair) and Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku (UMMU).

Harita Nickel’s Greenfield Strategic Mine Plan General Manager Lesbon Sitorus, was one of the main speakers at the event. He delivered a presentation titled “Assessing the Comparative Advantages of Laterite Nickel Extraction Using Pyrometallurgy vs Hydrometallurgy at Harita Nickel.”

Lesbon began his presentation by motivating the students, emphasizing that working in the mining sector has a positive impact on many people, including families and communities. He encouraged mining engineering students from Unkhair and UMMU to continue honing their skills to seize employment opportunities in mining companies.

In his presentation, Lesbon highlighted that Harita Nickel currently employs around 20,000 workers, with over 85% being Indonesian, and of that, about 50% are from North Maluku.

Lesbon explained the rapid development of nickel processing amount at Harita Nickel, including various technologies that have been developed. He discussed the structure of laterite soil, which consists of limonite, saprolite, and bedrock pinnacle. The combination of these elements provides a comparative advantage in the nickel ore production process carried out by Harita Nickel.

Regarding environmental aspects, Lesbon reiterated Harita Nickel’s commitment to sustainability, including post-mining land rehabilitation programs and tailing management. He also mentioned conservation measures that have been implemented as part of the company's environmental responsibility.

The Chairperson of the Organizing Committee for the VI Regional Conference (Musda) of PERHAPI North Maluku, Hilda Alkatiri, stated that Lesbon’s presentation provided valuable knowledge for the attending students. Students from the first to seventh semesters showed great enthusiasm for the material.

“The seminar room was filled with students, and several even asked questions to Mr. Lesbon after the presentation. This shows their interest in learning more about the mining industry,” said Hilda.

Hilda, who is also a lecturer at Unkhair, added that Harita Nickel has always been proactive in supporting activities organized by professional mining associations and universities. This is demonstrated by the company not only sending speakers but also providing full support by sponsoring the event.

“This event serves as an important moment for students to deepen their knowledge of nickel ore extraction processes, opening up great career opportunities in the mining industry and enhancing their knowledge to face future challenges,” she concluded.
