Tailing ManagementHarita Nickel is committed to the safe and responsible management of our tailing facility throughout its entire life cycle. Our approach follows Indonesian regulations and international good practice, ensuring safety, compliance, and long-term environmental protection. Harita Nickel does not dispose of tailing into the sea.
Harita Nickel employs a method known as the Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF) for tailings processing at ex-pit area. Our program covers all phases of the tailing facility, from design and construction to operation, monitoring, closure, and post-closure. Our tailing management and monitoring system is equipped with drainage channels, leachate collection and treatment, and monitoring wells to safeguard water quality and structural integrity. Continuous monitoring is in place, with clear procedures requiring immediate action and mitigation should any anomalies, such as leakage, be detected.
Emergency preparedness is supported through available response equipment, regular maintenance of supporting infrastructure, and readiness procedures for personnel. We have also implemented an Early Warning System (EWS) to determine the emergency level of the DSTF condition and established an emergency response plan that covers alerts and evacuation procedures. Closure and post-closure requirements, approved by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, are integrated into facility planning to ensure long-term safety.
To strengthen accountability, Harita Nickel participates in independent third-party assessments, including the IRMA audit process. Internally, regular reviews are carried out by our Risk Management function.

Water ManagementHarita Nickel implements comprehensive water management practices to safeguard surrounding ecosystems and ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations. Water quality is continuously monitored at critical locations, including sediment ponds and discharge outlets, with all water treated prior to release. Testing is conducted in company-owned laboratories and regularly validated through independent assessments by accredited third-party laboratories, ensuring transparency and reliability of results. To strengthen water efficiency, the company actively reduces its reliance on freshwater by utilizing seawater in operational processes, such as cooling in power generation. Freshwater is reused in multiple production areas, supported by structured water conservation initiatives. These include employee awareness and induction programs, installation of reminders to encourage responsible use, and the reuse of treated water from the Water Treatment Plant for non-process activities such as heavy vehicle washing. Monthly monitoring of water consumption and regular flow meter inspections further strengthen efficiency. The company remains committed to advancing sustainable water management by exploring innovative methodologies and technologies that enhance water reuse and contribute to long-term operational resilience. |
