Bandung, July 22, 2024 – HARITA Nickel was invited as a guest lecturer at a public lecture organized by the Metallurgical Technology Study Program (Prodi) at Politeknik Energi dan Pertambangan (PEP) Bandung. The lecture, titled “Nickel Processing in the Future,” was held at the tekMIRA Amphitheater on Monday (07/22/2024).
HARITA Nickel brought three speakers: Director of Health, Safety, and Environment Tonny H. Gultom, Head of External Relations Latif Supriadi, and Greenfield LTP Senior Specialist Fajar Herdian Akhzan. The three speakers complemented each other in discussing in-depth the processing and refining of nickel ore carried out by HARITA Nickel on Obi Island, including environmental management and the Company's contributions to the communities around its operational areas.
Tonny explained that Indonesia continues to dominate global nickel production and is projected to continue to increase up to 3.70 million tons by 2030. “Indonesia is also expected to contribute 95% of global nickel supply growth during the period between 2022 and 2030,” said Tonny.
He added, “Nickel currently plays an important role in supporting various industries, including sustainability. With its vast potential, Indonesia is believed to be a key player in the global nickel industry. HARITA Nickel is also committed to supporting sustainability by implementing good mining practices, such as reclamation projects, revegetation, and post-mining land restoration.”
Tonny also emphasized the importance of the younger generation, especially Metallurgical Technology students, in developing the nickel processing industry in Indonesia. “Students must be equipped with adequate knowledge and skills to contribute to advancing this industry,” said Tonny.
This event was also attended by the Director of PEP Bandung Dr. Asep Rohman, S.T., M.T., Deputy Director I for Academic Affairs Dr.mont. Imelda E.R. Hutabarat, ST., MT., Head of the Metallurgical Technology Study Program Rudiyansah, ST., MT., as well as Metallurgical Technology lecturers Ir. Bouman Situmorang, MSc., IPU, and Fahny Ardian, S.T., M.T.
Asep expressed that after this presentation, students are more driven to learn about the mining industry comprehensively, from both geological and metallurgical perspectives. “We also hope that this event can strengthen the cooperation between HARITA Nickel and PEP Bandung, as well as open up more opportunities for students to contribute to Obi Island,” Asep added.
Over 100 students enthusiastically attended the public lecture. They came from all three PEP Bandung study programs: Metallurgical Technology, Mining Technology, and Geological Technology. The students considered this event a valuable opportunity to learn directly from experts in the field.
“I feel very fortunate to listen to presentations from HARITA Nickel. The material on the future prospects of nickel is interesting and very relevant to my study interest in hydrometallurgy. I hope to delve further into the application of hydrometallurgical technology in the Indonesian nickel industry and see how HARITA Nickel plays a role in driving innovation in this field,” said Hassna Habibah, a Metallurgical Technology student at PEP Bandung, class of 2023.
With this public lecture, it is hoped that PEP Bandung students can gain broader insights into the nickel industry and sustainable processing practices. This event also serves as an important step in strengthening the synergy between industry and education in Indonesia.
