Harita Nickel conducted a comprehensive chemical spill response drill at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) Acid Plant on Saturday, July 20, 2024. This initiative was aimed at enhancing emergency preparedness and reinforcing environmental safety protocols. This exercise simulates a sulfuric acid (H2SO4) chemical spill scenario, which requires a rapid and effective response to mitigate potential impacts on both worker safety and environmental sustainability.
The drill involved full participation of the emergency response team, including the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) department, Emergency Response Team (ERT), Production team, and other key personnels responsible for the efficient execution of emergency procedures. Through this simulation, the company aims to enhance the team’s understanding and practical skills in managing emergency situations. The drill also tested the readiness of equipments and chemical spill response systems in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The Acid Plant at HPL is a critical facility in the nickel refinery, where sulfuric acid is a routine component of daily operations, making this training particularly crucial.
According to Indra Maizar, the Environmental Superintendent at Harita Nickel, the drill not only enhances technical preparedness but also cultivates a collective awareness of workplace safety and environmental protection.
"Our goal is to ensure that every team member is fully informed and ready to respond effectively in the event of a chemical spill," he remarked.
Furthermore, Indra explained that the initial step in the drill of a chemical spill is to ensure the safety of oneself and colleagues by distancing them from the affected area.
“The primary focus is to secure the area and stop the primary source of the spill to prevent further spread of the chemicals. Following this, the emergency response team will take appropriate actions, including recovering the contaminated area, monitoring impacted water bodies, and assessing any potentially impacted drainage systems,” he added.
Indra also noted that this drill is part of the company’s broader efforts to adhere to ISO certifications and maintain high standards. Additionally, the exercise serves as an evaluation of the current emergency response procedures.
Feedback from this simulation will assist Harita Nickel in continuously improving its emergency response system. Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to enhancing safety and environmental sustainability through ongoing programs and future initiatives.
